The biggest problem is that the prophecy design came off as sports sedan, but came out as a family sedan. Neither is bad, but certainly different directions.
The prophecy did not fully come true, but Its still a rather unique looking car. It has its own character. I love that every Hyundai has its own character and personality vs them all looking like scaled up and scaled down verisons of one another. I think Hyundai also missed the opportunity to add frameless windows. The wheels from the prophecy should've made the production car. The roofline slope should've been steeper, the car should've been lower overall, the hood should've been longer, and the dash to axle ratio shouldve been a bit greater.
the concept looks like they wanted to make something like the Taycan, but prettier. Then some boss came in and said: I want it to look like a 2004 Ford Mondeo. Stop sugar coating a failed design. It's a systemic problem. They arent all bad designers. So you have know the design is this ugly on purpose and because nobody dares to deviate from what everyone else is doing.
I've been excited to see this car for a while now and was disappointed when I first saw the production Ioniq 6, but the more I see it the more it's growing on me. Not really sure why because I dislike the EQS and the bubble silhouette in general, but Hyundai has made it work, although it still does look awkward from some angles. Also helps that the interior is beautiful
They should have presented the 6 in black, so it hides a lot of those black plastics. It would look a lot closer to the prophecy. Bringing it in silver gave us a too much of a contrast from what folks were expecting.
i was just about to say the same thing! the ioniq 6 would definitely look better in black and would look about 80-90% like the prophecy (maybe exaggerated percentages but I think the point is clear enough)
If you NEED the car to be in black to hide the body lines... then its an ugly car. A beautiful design should look striking in ANY color! Just look at the new Mazda's coming out, they make this look like a pre-render that some 16 year old kid made for his CAD class.
I think the solution would be to make an Ioniq 6 Coupe, with that lower more planted stance. As well as the visual tweaks for it to represent itself as such.
I was extremely disappointed when I saw the production version of the EQS, that suffered from bad proportions too. I feel the exact same about the ioniq 6 as well.
love your re-designs but of course they would have destroyed the drag coefficient - to put this design in perspective, this car has a Cd of 0.21 and still looks gorgeous, whereas the Mercedes EQS has a Cd of 0.2 and looks like an obese boat
The rear end just does not work. I don’t like how the rear bumper has that black plastic graphic that curves upwards to meet the door shut line. There’s a million different better ways to do that. The front end has that weird black band across the nose- it doesn’t fit.
The Ioniq 6 is fine with me. I just don't expect production cars to look like concept cars. It hardly ever works out that way so my expectations were that it would look something like this. I think your redesign is a future facelift for the car. The car that looks similar to its concept is the Polestar 5 vs. the Precpet but we haven't really seen that one yet either to note the differences. The Prophecy probably would have had too little room in it to make a successful car to carry people and luggage in and the front end probably wouldn't have passed a lot of regulations. And to look like it looked, it probably would not have met the Ioniq 6's price point either. Take this existing car, put it in a dark color, see it actually on the street with current cars, it's stunning.
Yes the proportions were off, it needed that adjustment, I like the redesign but the production one works too if you get rid of that black plastic line below the headlights, it doesn't connect to anything else in the body, thats the thing causing noise.
After seeing the Hyundai Ioniq 6 prototype at the Hyundai Motor Studio Senayan Park Jakarta, I believe this car will dominate the EV sedan in Indonesia, just like its predecessor Kona EV & Ioniq 5 which was produced at the Hyundai factory in Indonesia.
I hate when car manufacturers make the concept 100x better than the production model. It’s so disappointing; it’s the opposite of marketing. If anything, it makes the production model worse because we’re shown what it COULD’VE been.
DUDE! What was lost from the Prophecy concept were those HUGE, BEAUTIFUL, but incredibly impractical WHEELS. Yeah, sure the front headlights are different and some of the proportions are different, BUT what if the juicy Ioniq 6 N comes extras that really distinguish it from the regular Ioniq 6. I think if a black Ioniq 6 photos were taken EXACTLY at the same angles and lighting used on the Prophecy...I believe many of us would agree that the vehicles are more similar than different.
It's a lot taller than the Prophecy concept, this is 1,5 meters tall, because it's based on the EGMP platform, basically a skateboard with the bateries bellow the floor, so it does not allow for a sportier car. It's sad that they don't have a different platform with batteries rearranged to get the car sitting lower...
People have to understand that there is a lot that goes into design. Budget and practicality for the user play a huge role in production. Concepts are and have always been a preview of what’s to come hence the word “concept”. I do agree that Hyundai should have been a little more honest with themselves and the public that the Prophecy was not realistic and more of a concept to future designs. It’s easy to draw and come up with beautiful designs but it’s a different ball game when it comes to production especially with a far out design like the Prophecy. I go through this all the time in the design industry…. But overall I feel that the Ioniq 6 is a beautiful and different design compared to the competition! Wish the digital mirrors were legal in the states smh…

Your notion about concepts and production is true. That being said, this design isn't any revolutionary.....the side profile & the rear end portion is Hyundai's interpretation of Porsche cars.
It's easy for armchair designers to come up with a "better-looking car" since they don't have to consider aerodynamics (important for EV range), cost and safety.
Designers are just bitches of management. The concept was a beautdil throwback to the 90s with more rounded designs. This will eventually come back, but for a decade we have been stuck with the paradigm of "How many creases can we get in the design". It aint all about money. It's just that most designers suck and just copy what everyone else is doing. Then management comes in and makes it even worse.
my biggest problem with ioniq 6 is the front lights and you seemed to make them look much better so i hope they see this video and do something similar that you did :) also i think that the front grill look the best here : 10:20
The low hood and huge wheels would have never worked on a production car .... not enough suspension travel for one thing. The interpretation is top notch from the show car.
Its a long shot but would you go over any of the peugeot designs and perhaps make a series of redesigns of their legendary or plain econobox models? You are truly a good designer, everything in the past videos just hit the spot.
The vertical light bars at the front and tail are a nod to historic 'overriders' seen on the bumpers of older cars (the vertical chrome sections added to the horizontal main chrome bumper). Hyundai has been playing with historic car motifs for a while now including the 1980s pixel aesthetic and that road race car concept they did a while back.
I agree! Would also remove the black 'bumper strip' on the front. Building a car close to the Prophecy concept and sell it for double the price of the I6 would be a smart commercial move in my opinion.
I wonder… do the changes from concept to production have to do with “regulations,” or more to do with the fact that they are not working with a bespoke platform. They basically have to make the concept fit on top of a pre-designed platform. The platform can’t be adjusted to the body of the concept car. Right?
It's definitely not a clean design compared to concept. They could have make it look far more beautiful, neat and tidy by tweaking proportions and removing unnecessary elements. Chaotic front fascia, Shorter front overhang, non-intersecting shoulder line and roof line and out of placed tail lights are the bad design choices.
i have been watching these videos of you analysing these cars and redesigning them and i thought it would be cool for you to do a couple of the old style videos where you sketch with markers and bic pen
I thought it was gonna be a sleek small car but it looks like a kinda sleek big car. Maybe I gotta see it in person but I don’t mind the design. I think I expected too much from the concept
yeah, the ioniq 6 doesn’t work for me, looks awkwardly tall, the area between the top of the front wheel arch and the top of the hood is huge, the front end is also unnecessarily busy
It seems to me that we might be in the presence of a "chameleonic" model. Meaning that in a darker color it could turn the production model less busy at front/rear ends, lowering the overall height at the same time.
Your version looks great. I’m seeing a trend of concept cars translating to production with decent carry over of graphics but completely ruining the proportions. Something similar with the Supra and to a lesser degree the Taycan.
Does anybody else think there is some subtle Porsche design language on the headlights and hood as well as the sloping rear end with the high spoiler? (Matched with a light bar)
the ioniq 6 looks like it would have an N line model, but I think this deserves an N model with bigger electric motors for more power, a slightly bigger battery for more range, and some more sporty looks. would definitely suit this car well in my opinion
I think your edit just shows that designwise, the Ioniq 6 shouldn't have been made a compact-mid executive sedan, and instead a full on fullsize sedan (ioniq 8?). I did some digging and found that the Ioniq 6 has a very similar wheelbase to the Lucid Air, but is over 10cm shorter while being almost that much taller as well. This is relevant because I find your edit has eerily similar front proportions to the lucid. If they stretched out the ioniq into the footprint of the lucid, it very well may have actually looked like that.
Considering that the Prophecy and the Lamborghini Murcielago were designed by the same guy, I think the Ioniq 6's complicated fascia was basically Hyundai trying to slap an LP-640's mouth in there :v
Yeah they dropped the ball on this one, aside from the concept design this car looks nothing like the ioniq5, pixels worked on the ionic5 because it’s overall design was square-ish, this is a smooth car with random pixel lights, and two spoilers, it’s just ugly and don’t get me started on the front end.
I see the other side of the coin....the hate the saggy rear end, which is practically bad with rear headroom and trunk space....it reminds me of the bad execution of the FORD CONTOUR!!!! I'LL PASS!!!
Just rented an Ioniq 6 and I loved the range but as much as I wanted to like the looks even just as a fraction of how much I loved the Prophecy concept, I really couldn't. The way they designed everything with the shape of the car, they went in a very different direction even if most of the "elements" carried over...it looks like a normal ice car trying to look like the concept and after spending several hundred miles with one, I wasn't sold...still very confused why they designed the door frames to be unhidden like most sedans... It is a head turner I guess for the average person it looks interesting but I think folks who appreciate good car designs it looks wrong. For comparison, FT1 -> Supra was a big let down but the Supra still ended up looking very good in person.
Hi @the sketchmonkey. Loved your channel and your works. Can you make a sketch of a honda accord coupe similar to mercedez gle coupe 😇 that would be great! ⭐️🎉
That mustache bar is killing the design for me, the Ionic 6 in black will look 10x better. I was also hoping this car would be the “poor man” Taycan, but it’s just a small crossover, same height as a 2nd gen GLA.
Another concept car that got hacked up on the way to production. Do automakers have a department that specialize in taking an artist's concept and making it ugly?
Concept is just a theme of where the designers are shooting for to gage public opinions and adjust any last minute changes necessary before the production gets the green light. However, concepts eventually have to face the reality: cost, tooling technology limits, materials, engineering limitation, timelines,, safety regulations and competitor designs/trends. Therefore, to meet these new additional standards and requirements, there are compromises and sacrifices made to the original intended design.
WIth that roofline shape, the car would've been much nicer to look at if the windows were frameless. That visible doorline up there look so weird...welp, at least to me.
That black one is a BEAST ! However the industry won’t allow it to come into production because it’ll put Porsche, Audi & Mercedes out of business for good😂😂😂 !
Just hideous tbh! They've lost the design language from the Prophesy concept...including this second "backlight" wing ...as for the front...it looks like a after work with those pixelated lights...just ugly
I was so disappointed with the i6 tbe prophecy was incredible and I honestly think more of it could have been delivered in production and they could have raised price to base 60k and made it the blue collar taycan and it would be a sell out Your version looked better proportioned but i think the headlights needed thinning out more like the concept and the original 🍌 headlights of the original cls the widened the car visually thats why i think the second gen cls looks like a standard saloon vs tbe original 4dr coupe….the original 4dr coupe was an alfa 156 imho
The prophecy concept is a two door Sport car and the Ioniq 6 is a sedan... Normal the lost something on the way.. They weren't trying to make a sport car..!
I like Hyundai and Kias recently, but this, I'm not so sure about, and for those who thinks it's practically impossible for them to make it as good as the concept. look at Ioniq 5 and Tesla model S, the Tesla in someway manage to capture that "planted-ness" that low hood and shoulder lines on the prophecy concept that the 6 misses, while it's still looks unique keep that in mind, but it fails to look like something that can potentially compete with Taycan, Lucid, or Model S (look wise) to something that looks like it competes with Civic or something. It's just too tall for what it is, and looking at your edits, it makes me wonder how much better it can look with such a small change
The biggest problem is that the prophecy design came off as sports sedan, but came out as a family sedan.
Neither is bad, but certainly different directions.

I was so disappointed with the i6 tbe prophecy was incredible and I honestly think more of it could have been delivered in production and they could have raised price to base 60k and made it the blue collar taycan and it would be a sell out
Your version looked better proportioned but i think the headlights needed thinning out more like the concept and the original 🍌 headlights of the original cls the widened the car visually thats why i think the second gen cls looks like a standard saloon vs tbe original 4dr coupe….the original 4dr coupe was an alfa 156 imho
The prophecy concept is a two door Sport car and the Ioniq 6 is a sedan... Normal the lost something on the way.. They weren't trying to make a sport car..!
Your redesign doesn't stop me to buy the car, if I have the money
The changes are big and it's not a Model S competitor.
@@freddybell8328 "look wise"
And i stand by me, the changes is small, miniscule infact, but it tranform the way we perceive by a lot
Nice modification. But l prefer the original. The rear end of the concept version looked like a deflated balloon.
Most of the changes were an improvement to the overall efficiency of the vehicle.
Fix The Chevrolet SSR
Sportcoupes just dont sell. Perhaps Genesis will make one. Ioniq 6 screams Citroes DS for me, which is a good thing.
What a beauty
If people can live with a 4 door coupe, i think people can live with a more Prophecy-like Ioniq 6
Body of first gen Mercedes CLS
Front has sonata headlights
Rear of a Porsche 911.
Guess you could say, Hyundai decided not to follow the prophecy
