Black Representation & Influences in Jet Set Radio

- Jet Set Radio has had a cultural impact on a lot of people for its style, look, and music. Alot of it's influences can still be seen today in other games and media. But what aspects helped shaped Jet Set Radio to be what it is. With the four elements of DJ-ing, Breakdancing, Graffiti, and the MC, black culture has helped mold some of the most crucial elements of Jet Set Radio whether it's the featured black characters or it's style. Today, with the help of my fellow friends, Vadell and Chidow, we will discuss the history, impact, and the representation that helped influenced Jet Set Radio! Thia idea was thought out during the month of black history month.

YA BOI. THANKS RS FOR HAVING ME ON THIS!!!
Seriously JSRF’s soundtrack is integral to my Spotify library. Naganuma-San left NO crumbs on the soundtrack! ✨
this game also had a huge influence on many kids of its time bringing Hip-Hop culture to them and showing just how important self-expression and self-love are
THAT'S CRAZY ABOUT JAZZ BECAUSE SHE'S MY FAVORITE CHARACTER, SHES SUPER DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER CAST AND SHE STANDS OUT MORE
SAMEEE I LOVE JAZZ
This was fun to work on with y'all, and I even learned some new stuff during the making of it. I hope the rest of y'all enjoy it!
It turned out great! I learned a lot while helping on the project, and I’m glad I could help :)
I really can't thank you enough for all of your help with this project. Your involvement is what helped shaped this video to be really special.
So I really thank you so much. 😌
Thanks so much!
I love JSRF. Even though I didn't grow up in an environment that could empathize with the culture that it portrayed, JSRF would go on to influence my taste in art and media, even when I went through a bit of a conservative phase. After sorting through my issues and understanding myself and my philosophies a little better, though, my appreciation for JSRF and its message grew even more, and STILL influences my taste in media.
As a little white boy combo was always my top pick character he was so cool to me. Still probably would be my first pick to play as.
Great video! I often think about how Black culture has shaped a plethora of games I love to this day such as Jet Set Radio, Parappa The Rapper, Street Fighter III: Third Strike, GTA: San Andreas, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (Knuckles section), The Suffering, Def Jam: FFNY, and etc. I doubt we'll get anything nowadays of that magnitude but in the 90s/2000s it was special.
This video is incredible! Jazz is probably the most "underrated" member of the cast and I adore her design and style. The history and backgrounds behind all of this (especially with the Rudies roots, dance and music scene) was insanely well-researched and interesting to learn about, you can really tell how high quality this whole video is, everyone involved was clearly passionate and I couldn't be more happy to see how it all intertwines into my new favourite video from you.
Hope to see more in future Rise, videos like this is why I love the fanbase so much
JSR was one of my favorite games growing up, thank you for sharing light upon this as most don’t acknowledge this
need more content creators to make an emphasis on black culture being a root source in almost every form of creative outlet in modern music history
You know, the fact about Jet Set's and Future's OSTs sampling makes sense as to why SEGA didn't often rerelease Jet Set Radio and Jet Set Radio Future
😮 Jazz is black??! Who knew! That's cool since she was 1 of my mains!
Jet set radio helped form me as a teenager and I really didnt realize how much that representation was important untill I became a parent and I saw my kid not seeing representation in a lot of games.
It really gets you thinking back a lot, right?
Thanks for featuring my drawing of combo on the thumbnail. Love the video man keep it up. Jet set radio will live on.
Do you have a place were you post your art?
10:59 Just realised he’s soft shaded here instead of cellshaded. I’m guessing it’s meant to resemble those shots in comics/manga that are extra detailed for whatever reason. Pretty neat!
(Very nice video btw)
I got into jet set radio because I adored the vibrant character designs, and got hooked by the epic music!
All great reasons👍
The reason I got into dj ing and production I’m in se Asia bout to get a jsrf tatt lol
Dude the production quality on this video is amazing! You, Vadell, Chidow, and False all did excellent work n research. JSR always had a black vibe to me because of the music and the clothing. Black artists are underrated af
If I wasn't playing rhyth, boogie was my go to. I actually liked her redesign in jsrf. I remember even cosplaying her as a teen haha no one know who was my character 😂😂😂
from what ive seen this lil thing didnt get mentioned the voice that says understand the concept of love is actually sampled from a black panthers speech
really? the plot thickens.
DJ Professor K is a funny character in the game and when he said my favorite line of dialogue in the game
I love to this day this game and it's soundtrack more, it's one of my main reasons why I wanted to produce and I'm still trying to get to this type of energy in all of my production, if you produce then most likely you're a Sega kid like me, their soundtracks are 🐐
Loved this video. Shout out to muh boi Vadell!
Wait so you’re telling me all this time Jazz was black? My mind is blown. I just happened to be looking at Jsrf videos, and this popped up in my newsfeed. I was shocked to see her in the thumbnail! But as I look at her again I am amazed lmao. That’s crazy.
i didnt know she was Black either.
Sonic is such a underrated youtuber he makes great vids
He just got a subscriber
Aww shucks man, I really appreciate that homie😅
@@RisingSonic17 your the best
This was reaaally mind-blowing and interesting. Thank you all for making this video!
I know this might not matter, but I would say that the games music in JSRF has a bit of asain underground as well with how The Latch Bros. (Beastie Boy side project) sounds to me like hindi, and uses that genre of Bhangra plus Mike D helped a guru produced a song for the guru with mix-master-mike. Furthermore, the use of instruments like a tabla, dholaks and sitars are in their songs for example AI - bottoms up, koto stomp, The answer, master of illusion - Bronx-Bay Bridge and xlarge shoutouts etc. Have those instruments. Good project tho to understand and learn from tho y'all did a good job. 😏👌🏼
Woah this video is so informative and puts a new perspective on the game
One of the few games at the time, and it sticks with me to this day
You deserve more views I loved this, the history of rude Boi was something I never knew!
Dude the sonic origins Sonic 3 soundtrack hurts my soul.
oh my god bro. I was looking for this type of video for so long.... so long that I was willing to make my video. thank you for putting my thoughts into video form
Very informative and engaging! Loved everything about this ❤️ keep that jsr love going!
Dude, love your channel so much
Amazing video. I've never played these games from a black perspective (would be kind of hard lmao), but hip-hop is my life and I think this game was my real introduction to everything past the music i grew up on and being fully immersed in the scene. To this day, I've never played a game that captured my love for the culture quite like this one does, me and my girlfriend watched this last night and yeah, thassa sub. Thanks for this and keep up the amazing work.
Also Concept Of Love is my favorite off the soundtrack and i did not fucking know that sample. that shit was sick.
Video idea for you in the future would be maybe going through all the soundtracks and covering more of the samples, underrated part of the game soundtrack imo even though you covered it a bit already ^_^
Video helps people understand how much of an impact jsr has caused in the entire community of extreme sports, fashion miniroty groups and how they're represented, graffiti artists, music genras (hip-hop and breakcore)
Makes me happy to hear that you enjoyed it yourself :)
Awesome video! Love seeing fresh Jet Set content and hearing this perspective on it!
I agree Reyn
As a simple guy livin in mexico representation of people of color goes diferent: in mexico racism isnt as much as a problem as it is in us, that doesnt mean does not exist, but rather its more diferent, some people migth judge you form time to time but all and all is no a big problem, that say playing videogames or watching movies were black characters apears, you see them in a diferent way, i never saw those character for theyre color but rather for what they are theyre desings, personalities, way of acting, way of confronting problems, i made the concetion with them for what they do, my favorite character in tekken is eddie gordo cux he does capoeira and is a figthing style way diferent than any others, or barret who had a machin gun as his hand, thing like that are what i consider the most when i see representation character, in jet set radio, all of them are from diferent gangs and group yet they choose to join you in your quest cuz some how they belive in what you stand for.
Hell yeaa
This video is really cool and informative, learned a lot
Awesome stuff
Happy to see jst content
Thank you for this
Hope you see this. I got really Inspired by your video and the research and care that you put into it. This is something I really strive for and think I want to pursue myself you got yourself a new subscriber man and one day hopefully we can collabs in the future!!
Jazz is one of my favorite characters to play because of her style. Such a shame she's overlooked
Jazz deserves more love and recognition 🥺
7:20 ELECTRIC RELAXATIONNNNNNN
This is a topic I have thought about lately. But its also a topic I'm afraid to touch on as I'm just your average white dude and my fear is that because I have no horse in this race I have no place weighing in on it.
However, born in 89 in South Africa, I was molded by the video games, series, movies of the 90s and 2000s from the US, and seeing the world through my own lens (as everyone surely does), seeing things from someone elses point of view, as it would be in this instance, didnt occur to me (at least this broadly) till maybe the past 6 years or so.
I loved Static Shock as kid, it never occured to me that I might not have been the target audience, though I suppose that speaks volumes about the creative team behind that show.
One of my favourite characters in all of Final Fantasy, is Sazh from FF XIII, some folks had reservations about the character, being depicted with an afro, leaning more stereoptypical for some.
My point is, there is a whole host of characters of colour, or characters who are heavily inspired by African American culture that I Iove, but I never considered the level of influence it would have on the demographic it was inspired by or based on, I never considered the cultural impact things could have. Especially when my baseline for characters based on the characters Ive seen in 90 percent of the movies and video games growing up, look like me, It didnt occur to me that characters that dont look like me have a great relevance or impact for many.
I hope I articualted this properly, Its a topic I am relatively new to, and again because this doesnt feel like a topic I should I have a place discussing, its a certainly an interesting one I still am interested in following.
You're good homie. I'm glad you liked the video to be so interested in the topic. Very appreciated.
Bomb rush cyberfunk has great black representation. Tryce alone is one of my favorite characters fr.
No kidding. I'd say that game went above and beyond. It's so good
I think Tryce is everyone's favorite character
This was such a great and informative video, thank you for making it!
I'm glad you enjoyed it👍
There's been news of Phil Spencer wanting to add jsrf to the Xbox sx because of hi fi rush
This video is fire. I love it. And now I have to listen to Return of the Mack :)
Does Marina really count since she's more like a mutant octopus?
Of course it's nice to see an octoling anchor girl for the sequel.
Yessir
Big The Cat's theme from Sonic Frontiers.
outstanding video learned a lot from it
I'm happy to see you enjoyed! And thank you again for letting me use your beautiful art🥺
you have my full endorsement.
ngl I had a little bit of a thing for Jazz when I was a kid
I still do as an adult, lol
JGR and JSRF are easily in my top 10 game "franchises" of all time, god damn these games were perfect.
The GGs are revolutionaries...the term rudies come from the Jamaican word rude boy ....
Yup yup🫡
And the influence extends to DJ Cyber in BRC, which is even cooler
dope video
I'd like to see a JSR animated movie aka Spider-verse and TMNT Music Mayhem!
In a dream reality, I too would love something like that
Respect on the video
Okay you got with the prince that was really good.❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂😂
LMFAO. Thank you. He's my biggest influence, so I had to make a meme bit specifically with him.
GREAT VID
Thank you thank you
But I do back up and support you on every single African-American character that you brought up AK black character that you brought up video game wise on the spot. I do respect your support on the love and respect that you give to those characters than not that many people nowadays that are not representative of black descent pretty much go hating against them almost every single time, but I'm surprised I do respect that you give love to them including the people that play Black characters on television as well, which then I watch almost all the time including Everybody Hates Chris, which man that was like a favorite TV show for the mid-2000s during my favorite time to watch but nonetheless I respect on that point as well.
so then was my computer using the basic display after an udpate instead of my actual radeon graphics card?? thats so annoying lol cuz i did this an its working again just like that thanks haha
Hideki Naganuma produced one of the greatest OST's of all time.
10:52
So tell me who's known for rockin' the mic? (Mic mic mic mic)
cool video!!
I'm glad that you liked it :)
Can we get a list of the songs played during the video?
I thought Piranha and Boogie were two separate characters that happened to have some similarities-
Whats the song name in the background?27:02
Dave Clarke - The Storm (Surgeon Dub) [DUSK 1996]
I really think that the JSR team must have watched Do The Right Thing and taken a lot of inspiration from there. Buggin' Out is like Garam, we got Mister Senior Love Daddy as DJ Professor K, Radio Raheem as Combo, and even the themes and tone of the game seem to mirror the message of the film. Just thoughts.
Hideki Naganuma is to JSR and JSRF as David Wise is to the DKC series. If you get any other composer, the series will never be as good. Also, Professor K is the best character
Do yall know any current black artists who are making this music style rn? or something similar? i'm trying to get into it but I dunno who I should launch from :)
There's me... lol. Honestly, I don't think there's a lot in the mainstream. But if you go underground, a good chunk of them do.
Yeah what's new? This been here since 2009. :/ It's also deeply earlier than that with jet set radio.
Hmm? What do you mean by this?
Sega games have the best black characters n streets of rage and JSR/JSRF
How did u get Spotify dj for this video 😂
Kimberly 😍😍😍😍
Sole reason I wanna cop SFVI, lol
whats the song that plays at teh 5:04 minute??
Return of the Mack - Mark Morrison
@@RisingSonic17 i mean the part when you compare the voices of og combo and future combo that little moment when future combo says yo kid whats the background song?
@@ningen2245 ohhhhh. So in the Future Portion, it's I Believe from Persona 5 Royal
And not a single latino 😢
I feel like i watched 4 dufferent yooutube vids in this one video.
I don't blame you for saying this. All of us clearly had drastic different approaches in video styles and such. While (mostly) being in the same topic, the shifts in styles can surely be jarring
@RisingSonic17 Haha yeah they were. I thought I clicked on another video a few times. Anyway good upload. Thanks to all for sharing.
@@abetwabe thank YOU for watching. The homies and I appreciate it.
Dudley is black? I highkey didn't know that
Toasting traces its origins back to Jocko Henderson. The Jamaican pioneers of reggae already stated that they were influenced to start toasting from American radio stations. All elements of hip hop are black American creation.
This is new info for me, so I'm glad to learn more about that.
@@RisingSonic17 No sweat brother. This conversation of hip hop has actually been a big topic as of recently because there is a ploy to push us Black Americans from being the creators and innovators of hip hop. The Jamaicans and Puerto Ricans have been both trying to claim credit for the elements of hip hop which all started with a Busta Rhymes and Fat Joe claiming the creation of hip hop was 50 Black American and Caribbean people. Otherwise I loved the Break down you gave for the black characters in JSRF. This was literally my favorite video game growing up. So much so that I still have Jet Grind Radio for dream cast, and two copies of Jet Set radio future ( including the Japanese version) for the original Xbox.
People hating on Boogie just need to stfu
Based
yall forgot Zero Beat. He's Black too.
They even got the palms of combos hand right. I hate when my black characters hands don't have melatonin or whatever it's called.
Tekken 3 has 2 OST albums -- arcade and arranged for ps1. Check them out. And no more heroes 3
I should've brought up Tekken 3's soundtrack, silly was I?
@ yeah, Street Fighter 3 Third Strike is pretty interesting too
@@brokewayne4528 I wrote up my part in the middle of the night, half tired and inebriated a bit so I was only going off of solid memory.
@ it's understandable , our culture is scattered throughout general media
For some reason i like clutch i know he's a huge jerk but his design is sick
I feel like when ur talking about uk garage music u should pronounce it garage not garage
Toasting doesn’t come from Jamaica.
Back when JSRF came out, it wasn't about representation. It was about making good characters. It wasn't political.
if you think everything to do with black people is inherently political, you are a racist.
Dudley is black? 🤔
Well he's also British, I know that :)
Jazz is not black. She's freaking Caucasian that talks in like freaking weird, like gangster tone slang words. That sounds like she's black but she's not really black. She's actually Caucasian, so I don't know why everybody thinks she's black but she's not.
I don't think shes Black either but idk.
But Jess could be probably half mixture of blood because if her mixture is half Caucasian mixed with black and she probably might be a tiny bit of African descent, but I probably bet she's not to begin with then I could probably support that behind that she could probably be mixed blood of Caucasian and black then. Yeah, I could probably accept that in between the two but I just don't see her as kind of being black. I see her more Caucasian than anything else to be honest.
Jazz is as white as the Moon homie.
Huh?
Also seeing you that you edited this makes me concerned💀
Was jazz not made by Buddy Bolden tho?
So I am concerned as Rising like what direction are you taking this? I mean Paul Whiteman was the king of jazz, but did not created jazz? Bad comment really. 😅
@@RisingSonic17 I thought Jazz was mixed, honestly.
@@christmasanchez1.038 They mean the character Jazz, not the genre
@@bugjams I honestly forget that her name is a genre fr tho.😕
