The guard will walk 21 paces along the black mat, pause and face the east towards Capitol Hill for 21 seconds, turns and faces the north for another 21 seconds, and repeats this process. 21 represents our nation's highest honor: a 21 gun salute. Guards will repeat this until they are relieved.
The inscription you were reading says: "Here Rests In Honored Glory An American Soldier Known But To God."
Sentinels can ONLY be volunteers from the 3rd US Infantry Regiment, and about 90% of all volunteers on average fail to become a sentinel. The training they endure is very rigorous (as you can imagine) and lasts about 9 months.
Sentinels do not wear rank insignias because they do not believe anybody should outrank the Unknowns.

Tomb's like this exist all over the world, dedicated to the many many soldiers who died in our wars, even if they aren't known as such.
In the UK, it's the Grave of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey, in Germany it's the Neue Wache... Ukraine, Russia, Japan, Australia, France, Finland, Georgia, Chile, Iraq... I don't know all of them, and neither do I know all their names. But in every case, they are a monument dedicated to soldiers who gave their life in one war or another, many of which those of us who aren't interested in military history have probably not even heard of.
The reverence for those who died in war, nameless but not forgotten, is maybe the only thing we as a species have in common.

The weapon is an M14 rifle. One can see on close-up that there is no magazine clip and before the relieved sentinel falls out he confirms to the sergeant that there is no bullet in the chamber so it is unlikely the weapon contains any rounds. That's not to say that the sentinel does not have any single rounds on him.

Getting into the Sentinels is by no means easy. Only 15 percent of applicants are approved for training. Then after that only 20 percent of those who are approved for training pass the training. You must show the highest skills in conducting the ceremonies precisely, in keeping your uniform and weapon in proper appearance for each ceremony, and be able to recite 35 pages of training information word for word without error from memory. The Sentinel badge is the 3rd most rare badge in the US armed forces, and is the only one which can be revoked after you have already gotten it.

Dan, a slight correction, an Atlantic and Pacific theater unknown was exhumed, the caskets were draped with flags, and a U.S. Medal of Honour recipient chose 1 of them not knowing which was which. The other was re-interred at Arlington.( Just as for WWI, 4 caskets were exhumed and 1 was blindly chosen. There is only the 1 soldier from each war at the tomb, WWI in the large structure, and 3 in front.) They did ID a Veitnam vet and rebuy him, I believe in St Louis where his family was from.

To answer your questions, the Guard is changed every 30 minutes in the summer and every hour in the winter, also FYI it is not a gun, it is a weapon or rifle and yes they are loaded, they do not carry a knife, the sheath you see is for the bayonet on the rifle. The badge just below their right breast pocket is the Tomb Badge which is the second hardest badge to get in the Army following the Astronaut badge.

The length of a Guard's watch depends on what season it is, with the Summer watches lasting only thirty minutes and the rest of the year, they are an hour long. And this is in ALL kinds of weather. When the Cemetery is closed to visitors, the night rotation begins. The Tomb is guarded 24 hours a day, 7 days a wee, 365 days a year. This is regardless of weather, though there are contingencies for when the weather gets really bad, like during a blizzard or a hurricane.

A few years back, the guard inspecting the rifle during this ceremony accidentally dropped it on the foot of the guy being relieved. It landed bayonet first. His only reaction was a facial tic and he marched out of there with a bleeding hole in his foot. That's how serious these guys are about their duty.

That video has sections that explains the way they get into the guard, how they train, the history of the tomb, the 7 ceremonies and other information. It's a good information video that answers many questions.
A fun fact is that all guards cannot wear ranks during the guarding. This is so they do not outrank the unknown soldier, no matter what ranks they have.

The rifles are not loaded. The first movement the sentinel makes before handing the rifle to the Sergeant of the Guard is to look into the chamber to ensure a loaded weapon is not being handed over to him. Neither the sentinel nor the Sergeant of the Guard carry loaded weapons nor do they carry live ammunition. In the USA, the military has no authority over civilians unless they are on a military base or martial law has been declared. That is why they guard says, "It is requested..." and not conveyed as an order.

  • @Irish37

The sentries are very slender for a number of reasons. They are chosen for their height and build, and because they are also all fully-trained combat infantrymen who, when they are not posted to the Tomb, undergo the same kind of infantry training and maneuvers as any other line infantry unit. They are in superb physical condition. The strange way they move their feet when they are walking the mat is to prevent them from bouncing as they march. If you watch closely, you can see that their caps move in a straight line as they march, with no vertical travel at all. Only the Sergeant of the Guard wears rank insignia at the Tomb, and only while supervising the changing of the Guard. No one knows what rank the Unknown Soldier held, so the sentries actually on duty never wear rank insignia, so as not to outrank the honored dead.

One of the things that I think is interesting is that once you become a sentinel you more or less take a vow to be honorable. For the rest of your life, even if out of uniform, if you are arrested or do something to bring shame on your comrades they can remove the award from you. You mentioned how thin they are - the uniform must fit EXACTLY. No wrinkles or binding or pulling. Shoes shined to mirror surface, medals and buttons buffed, stray threads cut, hair neatly trimmed,... that is part of the job.

th-cam.com/video/vdmWB4DxdMw/w-d-xo.html This link will explain more. Watched the changing of the guard just after Basic training while in Army AIT (Advanced Individual Training) in Ft Belvoir Virginia. Being fresh out of Army Basic Training, I wanted to see just how good they were. I stayed for about 2 hours after everyone else left. Not only was I watching like a hawk, I also timed their turns and counted their steps. 2 abnormalities....(keep in mind I am really trying to look for flaws at this time). In that 2 hours one soldier, while standing in a guard shack away from public view slightly bent his legs to maybe stretch. The 2nd thing I saw was another soldier swallow while standing guard. Seriously, that was it. Unreal. Plus they were consistent on their turns and starts to the second. Yes, I had a stopwatch. Madd respect was earned in my eyes that day. The Old Guard is elite, no doubt.

Also, you may find it interesting that Arlington National Cemetery used to be the home of Robert E. Lee, the command General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil war. His property was seized and Civil War dead were buried in his yard, and this is what became the most hallowed ground in the U.S., Arlington National Cemetery. The Tomb of the Unknowns (there's more than one unknown buried there... one from WWI, one from WWII and one from Korea. There was one from Vietnam, but through DNA, his remains were identified and returned to his family), is very close to his former house.
I have several family members who were buried there.

Guard changes every half hour during summer, every one hour during winter. 24/7 The Sentinels spend five to eight hours preparing their uniforms for this duty.
The guards don't wear rank, because they are doing combat. (The fact that they are doing combat explains a lot for other videos of the Sentinels). The tomb is actively and actually guarded. The guns are loaded but not chambered. There are videos of a Sentinel chambering his weapon. (Yes, multiple videos of what appears to be the same Sentinel chambering a bullet for the same encounter. I'm kind of glad that it doesn't seem to occur very often.)
Americans, well we're different. Many other countries do not respect their militaries at all, and often with good reason. Many of the remaining countries reserve ceremonies like this to their royalty. We don't have royalty. Very few countries, as far as I can tell, have this much respect for a random fallen private, ripped apart by shrapnel just for being in the wrong place at a very wrong time.
Well, you may not, I may not, but those Sentinels do. Their weapons are loaded and they wear no rank insignia. That is a warning.

The "nice gun" is an M14 chambered in 7.62x51 mm NATO or, if you prefer .308 Winchester. It was the issue weapon from 1958 until 1968, when the M16 was issued. It can kill any mammal in North America. Sorry, I don't mean to be condescending, but I've been shooting for 60 years and firearms lore is as easy as breathing to me. I forget that our Second Amendment rights that we take for granted are not recognized in most of the rest of the planet. What most people, even Americans, do not realize is that the idea behind our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution and Bill of Rights is that these rights are granted by the Creator, not by the largesse of government. I'll follow you for a while to see if your head is screwed on straight. Ich muss zugeben, dass dein Englisch viel besser ist als das Deutsch, das ich von meinen Großeltern gelernt habe.

The semi automatic M-14 was one of the best weapons I ever carried. I was issued an M-16 and a 45cal semi automatic pistol when I arrived in Vietnam. For the long shot, I still like the M-14.

It is a US memorial in Arlington cemetery in Washington D.C. for those lost in battle and more specifically those soldier who were lost and their remain never found or identified. There are actually multiple unidentified soldiers buried in the memorial and not all of them are US soldiers. There is a theme of three at the memorial and three stands for Peace, Victory and Valor.
The guards are called Sentinels. The rifles they carry are for ceremonial purposes, so although they are fully functional, they are not loaded. Their side-arms on the other hand are a different story and I would not recommend messing with these guys, these are soldiers and they hold what they do in high regard.
It is common for people who visit the capital to visit the tomb for the ceremony of "The Changing of the Guard". The Guard changes every hour on the hour in Winter months and every half hour during the Summer months. The guards are on duty 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 365 days a year, regardless of the weather. The tomb has been guarded by a Sentinel every minute of every day since 1937 without interruption.

The Cemetery is in Arlington, Virginia - across the Potomac River from DC. And you are very wrong about who is buried at the Tomb. There are three Americans. WWI Unknown is in the Tomb. WWII and Korean War Unknowns are in crypts directly in front of the Tomb. (The Vietnam Unknown was identified and removed in 1998.)
