  • Soldiers from the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (the Old Guard) and the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own,” conduct military funeral honors with funeral escort for Retired U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Gordon Sullivan in Section 22 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, May 10, 2024.
Sullivan was a retired United States Army general who served as the 32nd Chief of Staff of the Army and former president and CEO of the Association of the U.S. Army. He retired from the Army in July 1995 after more than 36 years of service.. His legacy as a respected military leader and public servant continues to inspire future generations of soldiers and leaders in the U.S. Army. During his esteemed career, Sullivan was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal twice, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Purple Heart, among others. U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George presented the U.S. flag to Lori Sullivan following the funeral service for her husband, retired U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Gordon Sullivan.

I am a fellow Norwich Alum to General Sullivan, class of 1979. Years later, I served in the USAF Reserve.
One of the lasting memories from freshman year in the Fall of 1975 is his kindness to me. I was limping because my left leg is shorter than my right from a bout with polio as an infant. He was visiting campus that day and saw me limping. He came over and greeted me, asked how I was doing and if I was from Texas due to my rolling gait. When I told him why I walked like that, he expressed sympathy and patted me on the shoulder.
He cared for the folks under his authority.

Outstanding service for the CSA. My Okinawan wife and I were in Arlington 11 April in Section 60. We saw another Army and Air Force service such as this. Thank-you to all the service members. I was in the path of the Army service marching back to their transportation..and held a firm salute to all as they marched past me and wife. She too was moved. We were visiting my cousin in Section 60, LTJG Phil Buck, USS IOWA, BB61, 19 April, 1989. Semper Fidelis to all, USMC Retired. Vietnam Era.

The US of old is still standing, you just gotta look for it, in order to find it. The values are there, the people are there. Do not let social media and the fact that common sense sometimes is gone because of too many negative emotions, make you think otherwise. I love you yanks! Ive never visited the US but I hope someday I could and will. The US is the only global superpower, thankfully, despite what the russians, quasi-pacifists or chinese say or want you to think. I hereby also want to thank each and every US serviceman or woman, past or present, for their service, no matter their rank or branch. The US is the only bulwark of the free, without which things which are happening in Ukraine will happen globally. Please keep supporting Ukraine. Russia must not win. Huge respect and much love from your humble NATO ally - Bulgaria! May Gen. Gordon Sullivan rest in peace!

I’ve done a couple of these while I was at Fort Lewis. I went to Oregon and California to do two military burials with full honors. One was a major and the other full bird colonel. None the less I cried at both because I believe every man and woman that wears the uniform honorably are American Hero’s. God bless this hero my condolences to the family. It’s truly an honor to be chosen to do something like this. We must as a country pay respects to the men and women who wear this uniform everyday and they answer every call to duty no matter what it is. This man changed many lives and he saved many lives. So we honor hero’s like this everyday no matter whether we serve actively or not. I thank the Army for turning me into the man I’ve always wanted to be. I still do some things in my life today that I did when I was on active or reserve status. These generals who move on from this earth changed many lives they came across.

Putting to rest a person who has dedicated their life to the service of their nation and its people is a solemn act of respect and gratitude. May all those who serve be given the dignity of a respectful burial.

General Sullivan was the Army Chief of Staff when I joined in 1989. He was the first impression of Top Brass that I was exposed to and I remember him for his warning to us about avoiding a "hollow Army"- reference the Korean Conflict. I think he saw the writing on the wall- and we trained and we trained again. Hello Desert Storm, Desert Shield, Just Cause, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, - to name a few. He stewarded the Association of the United Sates Army (AUSA) of which I early on became a lifetime member. This huge tribute, bringing out all of the Guard, is fitting for a top man, the most senior Army General of his time, who dedicated his entire adult life in service to our nation. Rest in Peace Sir, Hooah!

GEN Sullivan was my brigade commander in Europe. I had the opportunity to further interact with him when he was 3AD chief of staff and when he was CSA. He was one of the finest leaders I've ever known. Those who had the opportunity to hear him address soldiers at Ayers Kaserne will understand when I say "he was a Great American". Ready First, Sir! ... and rest easy.

My step father served in the vietnam war. He was radioman under the camo nets communicating with artillery with coordinates on where which direction to send/fire artillery shells at enemy locations. He was with I believe the 82nd airborne or 101st screaming eagles.
My step-father served and was discharged under honorable conditions.
The military shiped him back home.
On his DD214 he was awarded the DFC-Distinguished Flying Cross for his n heroic actions against the Viet Cong . He held a specialist rank in the army.
My step-father choose to be creamated. I ask the va personnel why they did not give him a gun salute the va rep said that because he was not retired. I why the army did not medically retire out my step-father he got the short end of the stick.
Meanwhile my 1st cousin was active as well and was received a war service related injury when he deployed to Afghanistan. The army medically retired my cousin.
My step-father a combat veteran airborn rated honorably discharged received again a distinguished flying cross but was not medically retired out.
As for my 1st cousin the army medically retired him out. My cousin said he did not receive a purple heart. He got injured from jumping off a armored personnel carrier and landed and injured his hip, leg, knees etc no medals for heroic action but he got the better end of the stick by being medically retired out.

If I mentioned that I spent time watching this to my immediate family they would wonder why. I may have dodged all our country's conflicts but there is something about enlisting and serving in our Armed Forces. I only did one enlistment but one is different because of being one.

Interesting, it seems like he was buried in an older part of the cemetery with all of the older style headstones.

If you get the chance- read Senator Tom Cotton’s book, Sacred Duty. He was a member of the Old Guard and describes everything that relates to this remark. Arlington is divided into several sections.

Arlington is becoming more and more mixed in some areas.
They actually need more land I heard they bought a bunch not long ago but with 490,000 graves spaces getting a little tight.
Right now they're doing between 25-30 funerals a day over there.
