    I like what you say. All in full detail that I was concerned with. Really easy to understand. Yes you do deserve thumbs up. I think controlling the boat saftly is better then speed. Like you said, extra people on the boat. Wakes, skiping across the water can be bad. Ballance and control of your boat is very important. Thank you for this video.

    one of the best videos that actually could show me the difference, and convince me, that I need this plate, oh yes, after this video I know I really need this stingray plate, so I can have an easy time riding when I am alone in the boat

    Yeah, I have been using them for many years, and they really help any boat track better and get up on plane faster. Great video.

    I have used a device similar to this and had very good results on my 140 HP ski boat, getting on plane quicker and increased stability in cornering. Why don't motor manufacturers use this concept in the design of their motors? It seems to me that they are missing the boat!

    • @razorbak6783
      @razorbak6783 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree James...my 18 ft ski boat with 140 HP came with one already on it and a few years later I decided to take it off just to see the difference. Boat took a lot longer to get on plane and as soon as I did get on plane I went straight back to the boat ramp and put it back on.

      @jakeguitar01  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's right. The Stingray classic junior worked great. It slowed my Gheenoe down a bit but, the boat is controllable now.

    • @4mitchhimmel
      @4mitchhimmel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's because there's more boat in the water now. More resistance will slow you down. If you were to cut a 1/2 inch off each side to make it a little narrower, you might get about the same results but pick up a little more top end speed. jakeguitar01

    Mounted 2 of these to two VERY different boat setups. 16ft bassboat w 90hp Merc, and small boat w 15hp Evinrude. Eliminated bow rise and porposing in rough water and have much faster hole shots. All this even in a small boat with NO extra bow weight.
    I wouldn't put a boat in the water without one of these mounted.

    It will give you more lift but will increase a lot more drag... I have found if you extend the anti-ventilation plate aprox 6 to 8 inches at the same width and thickness, it will give you more trim action with out increasing more drag.

    Can I ask what horsepower your canoe is rated for? I have a Grumman 15’ square stern. It’s rated for 4hp. It handles a 6 fine but think a 15 would swamp it.

    Changing the height and angle of the outboard would probably eliminate this problem. Most older outboards have a metal rod on the motor mount that will set your angle and riser blocks will change your height. Weighing down the front will also help ride quality in such a light boat.

      Tyler Sabelko has nothing to do with the trim. I have electric trim and have tried my boat with and without Stingray. It has dramatically increased stabilization (on all trim settings) as well as made it effortless to get on plane.

      Cool. Let us know how it works. What I do is take it off or leave it on depending on whether I am going out by myself or with someone else. By myself, I definitely need it, and with another person, its really not needed at all. Its optional...as long as you can put up with the boat slowing down. All in all a good product. It does what it says.

      @jakeguitar01  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +E. Squatch --> See if it's possible to raise up the whole engine. It's possible it's just too far into the water. They have engines with a short lower unit and ones with a long lower unit. Or you can just put one of these parts on your engine. They seem to work.

    • @modelnutty6503
      @modelnutty6503 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      definitely, if it's peeling the motor plate to make the mount spot taller go for it! put that plate about 3/4 below hull line is usually about right. I used oak (1-1/4" taller), long screws and glue. 3 thick coats paint then slam the motor plate onto it's new taller home. if you have a long shaft engine yes find a short leg/shaft for it. long shaft are more typically sailboat pushers, so you'll likely need to swap prop along with. most transoms usually 15-1/2 to 16", or about 20". a sailboat pusher on a short transom is NOT a pretty situation!

    • @jakeguitar01
      @jakeguitar01  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, we lost a few mph with this hydrofoil, so I decided to use it only when boating alone. As long as I have two people in the boat, its fine, because the guy in the front keeps the bow down. So, now I use the hydrofoil only when going out solo. Its easy to take on and off...

    I put this on 17' deep V I/O ski boat. Popped right out of the water like never before. Then it flopped over on its side and turned hard. I got it to balance for a few seconds but I don't recommend these for deep V hulls.

  • @zandemen
    @zandemen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If the motor height was set better you would not lose that speed. Here's what's happening; the motor is too low, applying too much rotational force to the boat and lifting the bow, you put the planing fin on there and counteracted that with a large amount of lift on the stern, trimmed very low and the fin angled down sharply to the rear.. Move the engine up, trim it up a notch so you use a smaller amount of lift and still have the same ride.
    When I used these I gained speed as it lifts the hull out of the water for less drag, yet giving more control to prevent chine walking and porpoising at 65mph in a 14.5' boat.

      @@aureliomartinez4927 se puede buscar con otra hélice ( de distinto paso, y mas o menos palas), la inclinación del motor y la altura del motor.
      Hace algunas décadas las helices para carreras eran de 2 palas. El paso puede ser 14, 17, etc, hay que probar.
      El motor se lo puede levantar, acercando la helice a la superficie, no mucho porque se no cavita, la helice queda en una burbuja de aire y no va. Y cuanto mas se inclina el motor, mas levanta el casco del agua, como haciendolo mas liviano, si te pasas de inclinación, zapatea, navega como si hubiera olas.
      El peso de la embarcación creo es mejor atras, a estribor,.
      Y combinar halice con atura de motor, mas cerca de la superficie, mas paso.Saludos desde Argentina.

    Ignore the naysayers. In 50 years of knocking around in small boats with outboard motors from 5 to 90 HP, I've never seen one that couldn't be improved in almost every way by adding a hydrofoil. Better yet, they generally cost under $100 and take less than an hour to install. It's a no-brainer!

    Using a jackplate without the hydrofoil, should give the same trim effect while maintaining and/or improving your speed.

    • @jakeguitar01
      @jakeguitar01  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, probably right. Because of the length of the motor, the prop is sitting very low. Btw, the bow rise helped me out this past weekend, however. I took the hydrofoil off and two of us wend out in some pretty choppy water. I would have gone under if it weren't for the front end coming up high...

    • @modelnutty6503
      @modelnutty6503 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      done it the "cheesy" way (cheap and easy) too, peeled the motor plate, sanded the top clean, glued+screwed oak to fit, replace motor plate. raised the outboard about 1.25" did wonders, initially it was 2" below hull line. near all the porpoising issue was solved, it was just too deep.

      I am not so sure that would help but I would be willing to try switching props if I had another one. I really thought the boat slowing down was because there is just more of the boat in the water. In other words, the front of the boat is sitting lower in the water which is causing more resistance.

I'm really just excited to see your cavitation plate scratched up while the drill bit dances around your mark. Good luck steering strait when your hydrofoil is mounted crooked and your cavitation plate looks like swiss cheese!

  • @KungPowEnterFist
    @KungPowEnterFist 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Im not saying this video is completely fake, but the driver was making it porpoise like that deliberately at the beginning. That was not realistic at all. Later, after adding the hydrofoil, he didn't do that. If he had, it would porpoise the same way with the hydrofoil.

    • @jakeguitar01
      @jakeguitar01  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The boat was actually that bad. I wasn't making that happen at all. The only way I can take that boat out without the hydrofoil is if I have someone sitting in the front. Otherwise its just too impossible to ride. It pops up and the back of the boat goes under....

    • @KungPowEnterFist
      @KungPowEnterFist 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could have added/moved more weight up front as well. Just saying. You have to try to get it to porpoise that bad by not balancing the weight, throttling, and timing the wake. I'm not saying it won't porpoise, but to get it to be that bad is something you have to try to make it do.

    • @jakeguitar01
      @jakeguitar01  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +free88 ---> The only way you are going to believe me is if you see it yourself. You shouldn't have to move 100+ pounds of unnecessary items to the front of the boat in order for it to ride flat. Trust me, I'm not making any of this up. It's not my first boat. And there are no wakes to speak of in the Florida everglades, especially 20 feet from the ramp. My gut feeling is that the motor length is a big part of the problem. Too much of the engine is in the water. Its a very light boat also. The boat's weight, the engine, plus the weight all the way in the back play a big part in the whole equation. Trimming the motor is no help either. I still take the boat out without the hydrofoil, but only when I have a passenger. The boat is faster without it...

    • @KungPowEnterFist
      @KungPowEnterFist 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Gheenoe 15'4' myself, and have actually riden in two others. Ive been on one with F9.9 and one with a 2 stroke 15HP. Yours looks like a 15'4'. BTW, if it is a 15'4', 15HP exceeds the nameplate rating. I do believe you can make it porpoise that bad if you try. Adding the fin thing is one way to go. I am not saying it is not. It is a solution. Moving weight forward is also a solution. Trim tabs are also a solution. Other things can also help. Each have varying degrees of effectiveness and at different speeds, and often a combination of multiple improvements are needed to dial it in.
