    The older music artist were poets and wrote music lyrics accordingly. A talented that is seemingly lost in the music of this generation.

    Well done Sir. Finally, after so many years somebody understood. Thank you. He's still young when he wrote the lyrics of this song. Even Jimmy Page once said on an interview that Robert is truly fantastic. A lyricist in a class of his own.

    I literally love this and have always "inner known" this. God has ways of planting seeds and messages that we dont even understand. This was clearly one of those seeds or message planted. It makes total sense. Im literally stoked that youve explained so others can fully understand. Those who know, Know. Those who dont...will learn to know. Thankyou so much. And yes, this is one of the best songs of all time, and why wouldnt it be, its straight from God. ❤❤❤

      The lyrics are what makes this a great tune. The music for this song isn't all that exciting without them, but the music does serve "the song" well..

      @@timtubemusic According to AI interpretation, the line "to be a rock and not to roll" from Robert Plant's lyrics, most notably in "Stairway to Heaven," is a play on the phrase "rolling stone," which refers to someone who is constantly moving or changing, essentially capturing the idea of the wild and unpredictable nature of rock and roll music; so, "to be a rock" means to be stable while "to roll" represents the dynamic, energetic aspect of the genre. In my mind, it's a great way end the lyrics for this tune, as personal interpretation will vary within the context of the context of the song's message..
      Well done Robert, don't hate the song; you'll be hating the insight you were blessed with to create it.. That's just plain wrong, if it's true what they say, but it's probably fake news lol

      Agreed...much more sense. I've been thinking a lot about the song lately and I thought that the Lady may be a reference to a tarot card: the Queen of Coins (Pentangles). In her correct aspect, she's a nurturing figure of financial responsibility, but in her "reversed" aspect, she's seen as someone who's lost her way in materiality. So maybe in 'Stairway' the Lady is the Queen of Coins in a reversed aspect and the Piper is playing to try to get her to turn around, to get her to listen. Just thinking.

    • @abeautifuldayful
      @abeautifuldayful หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jaywysard I like your interpretation. Cards and coins are common ways to see things. Many people say what's in the cards, and there are two sides to every coin. Extrapolations born of possible paths to find authentic values in life, the world, or the universe beyond are captivating.

    • @jaywysard
      @jaywysard หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@abeautifuldayful The thing that amazes me to this day is that Plant wrote the lyrics when he was what...22? Holy cow. He's said that the lyrics sort of "wrote themselves" and if that's the case the ideas behind tarot readings, self-realization, LoTR and all that must have been really, really set deeply into his consciousness to pen something so quickly and with such depth and nuance. Unreal.

    Wow Finally someone else gets it. I would add two things. I believe you have slightly wrong. We know at the time of writing Plant was into Celtic mysticism. which in all fairness is where Tolken gets this concept from. The West is indeed the Celtic version of Heaven. What I think you misunderstood is the next stanza. The rings of Smoke through the tress is also a Celtic reference to the festival of Beltane. This is a festival celebrating the transition from spring to summer and the end of calving season in which the whole community gathered in the forest and built a bonfire often in circles and danced through and around the fires and sang songs to the Celtic God of fire Belenus and The May Queen Goddess. The Symbol of birth purity and spiritual growth. All fitting into the narrative you have pointed to for this song. In Fact if you look at the chain dance that is common in Celtic celebrations today that has everyone join in a circle and dance together you see that dance of this festival. The final point I think you are a bit off on is the Shadow and the Soul. The fact that is makes reference to winding down the road thus referencing our journey through life. The Shadow represents our deeds our actions the fact it is taller than our soul which is our true Identity shows that we are still far away from the light source, if we were close to the source our shadow would be smaller than ourselves. We know this is what is being said because first off the Lady is on the same road as we are. Secondly he then goes on to say that we must still listen very hard for the truth to finally come to us. And then he states what that Truth is. To be a rock and not to roll. To be firm in your convictions. Most people have a very high moral standard the real challenge in life is to live up to that standard yourself and not to roll over when that moral standard becomes inconvenient (ie:to stand firm on your convictions your morals even if it leads to your death.) Jesus says the same thing Judge Not lest you are judged for the same measure you put on others is the measure you will have to stand up to. We all have our moral code and we judge others actions by that code the real Question is do you live up to it yourself, are you a rock that does not roll? One final thought is that in symbolism a woman very, very often represents false religion or beliefs. ie the Whore of Babylon comes to mind who loves gold and is responsible for not only all who have been murdered on Earth but for the wanton destruction of Earth.

    Robert Plant and Jimmy Page confirmed the part referring to Jung and the Shadow in an interview when they were touring together. They played some of Stairway to Heaven and when asked about the meaning of the song Robert said to Jimmy should he give the Jungian interpretation of it but did not expand upon that. There is a clip of it on TH-cam. Somerset Belenov is an interesting reference as the May Queen. The illumanati. This song could be even deeper than what is presented here. Who is behind our materialistic world and selling us all these shiny products and telling us we can buy our way to heaven?

      Good questions. The one in complete oppostion to true spiritual understanding replicates his version. "Satan himself keeps disguising himself as an angel of light" who is misleading the entire inhabited earth. People are enamored by what he claims to offer but in the end he leads them to destruction...completely away from the true God and Creator. He guides the masses on the road leading away from true happiness. (2nd Corinthians 11:13 - Revelation 12:9)

    Being French (although bilingual), I didn’t grasp all of the cultural references and English meaning of some of the sentences in that song. However, intuitively, that song resonated deep with me. Now, thanks for your analysis, you extracted its essential oil and distilled it in a clear and concise way for us to « hear the wind blow ». Everything makes so much sense now and although I once heard RP say in an interview that this was a song written by a 24 yr old boy and that he preferred Kashmir over STH… I guess, he, himself, has not « heard the wind blow »even though he wrote it and performed it over a thousand times in his life 😉. Don’t get me wrong, Kashmir is an exceptional piece of music that I admire as well but STH is a special « gem » all of its own. Thank you so much for this in-depth analysis 🙏!

    Well done. There are other allusions to JRR Tolkien's work as well, including in this song. The line "all that glitters is gold" appears in Tolkien in slightly different form in a poem in 'The Lord of the Rings', which goes, "All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost..." In other words, inner knowledge may not glitter, but it may still be of great value. The use of the word "glitter" by Plant cannot be accidental. The lady that shines white light seems modeled on Galadriel in a physical sense at least, who is "tall, white, and fair." She gives Frodo the gift of a phial that "glittered [that word again] as she moved it, and rays of white light sprang from her hand." She says that the phial is "...a light in dark places, when all other lights go out." Galadriel herself had long ago made the fateful choice to join the Elves following Feanor to seek physical riches by trying to recover the stolen simarils. This had lead only to endless strife, suffering, death, and banishment from Valinor ("the West") for the Elves that made this choice. Only when Galadriel passed the test of rejecting the One Ring, was this ban removed. She had chosen the path of inner peace and enlightenment over wealth and power. Also, the line "can you hear the wind blow", may actually be a triple entendre, and not just a double. It can refer to the two things mentioned here, but it can also be a reference to nature, embodied by the wind, asking if the listener is aware of the presence of nature all around him/her.

    • @Lyristoric

      Very nice! I did consider Galadriel for the "shines white light" section, but decided against it based on her purity in the story. But, I just may should've included it. Everything you wrote was quite intriguing! Thanks!

    Thank you for that enlightening insight on this song. Ive sang it numerous times and tried hard to connect the dots as to its meaning. Being a spiritual person i can relate to every bit of it from a Christian perspective. I’ve felt those thoughts in my own mind and i think Robert Plant did a great job poetically framing these thoughts. I’m not familiar with Eastern Religions but i can certainly relate it through the many biblical teachings over the years. I guess whatever source one chooses will determine their understanding of eternity and path. Christianity to me is the only source of salvation.

      What's interesting about the "backward masking" claims is that if you don't read along to what the claimer provides in a "follow the bouncing ball" method over the words interpreted to be satanic in nature, it would just sound like gibberish. "The power of suggestion" is relied on heavily in that scenario. Whereas some artists like the Beatles intentionally and cleverly used phrases that when played backwards were designed to convey a message ("Number nine...number nine..."), when Robert was asked about whether or not that was part of STH, he exclaimed "it's hard enough coming up with lyrics as it is!"...and stated he was being given way too much credit by anyone claiming to be hearing messages while playing it backwards.

    This is such an AWESOME song, and Robert Plant is a fantastic song writer. Many years ago this song was my girlfriend's favorite song. and because I cared for her very much I wanted to make it my favorite song also. an our song sorta thing? but after listening to the song. I liked it so much. it wouldn't have mattered if it was her favorite song or not.. and over the years I have tried to figure out the meaning of the song. and best I could come up with was the two characters the lady and the piper. and was buying the stairway to heaven. because this is in the lyrics. but as far as I could figure the piper was going to go with her? but that was about it. but after hearing this explanation of the meaning of the song. it's much more profound than I thought thanks.

    Very much agree. And very impressed. A quibble: the lady is maya, and the may queen: the material world that is the setting for the souls journey, so to me the song struggles with the dilemma of the need for the material world and the spiritual, when both anima and animus, spirit and matter have been, misconstrued. “When all is one, and one is all”, cites global unity and personal Enlightenment, relating the two, but also unity between the opposites of the material and spiritual, the lady and the Piper. “There are two paths…always time to change the road you are on” suggests on one hand that we can be in delusion indefinitely if we never examine things more closely, but also suggests that we need both .. thoughts and form, action and consequences, because it’s not two path’s, it’s a double helix, the yin yang, a duality, which we can transcend but not and the disparagement of either through misunderstanding, “her” misunderstanding is our own, and it isn’t just found in materialism or attachment, but in mainstream religions too, just consider how t the stairway to Heaven is bought and paid for.. in many popular religions., then see how both male and female archetypes have been misconstrued.

    All through the 1970’s people were drawn to this song without understanding the spiritual message. It’s a beautiful song and one maybe wondered what they meant knowing it had references at least to Celtic ways.
    Now it appears that we are even more materialistic and people no longer are drawn to the song. However, songs like “Black Dog” and “Rock and Roll” are filled with sexual energy so are still relevant to people. It is self evident that we are animals and animals procreate through sex a yet thank’s to monotheism and Christianity specifically we humans are encouraged to be a war with our animal selves like we are not animals. We are animals. Feeling lust for another is the same as adultery. That is encouraging shame. We are out of balance. Hence the song before this song where it asks “to bring the balance the back.” Sex used to be part of religion and spirituality. Monotheism is really a war against sex. Venus is the main god under attack. Sex becomes shameful. Women are only for raising children. Sexual attraction is evidently banished. I believe it is because Saturn, control, does not like it that it can not control sexual attraction and love. Saturn/Jahweh wants to banish Venus out of our lives. Rock and Roll reminds us of who we are, sexual beings, and is thus a threat to orthodox monotheistic religion.

    Spoken from the point of view of a Zeppelin fan. A lot of deeper meaning given for what may not have deeper meaning at all. When Robert Plant has been interviewed in recent years about the song, he totally distances himself from the lyrics, saying they were written by a young, naive, man who really had no deeper intent. See the Dan Rather interview of Robert Plant. If Stairway to Heaven really had such profound meaning, Robert Plan would be much prouder of his creation. But in reality he considers it a product of his immature self.

    • @Lyristoric
      @Lyristoric  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I'm currently working on a documentary about where songs come from, and your comment really makes me think of what I've found in that research.
      So, to respond first to your comment directly, what Robert said to Rather was, "it belongs to a particular time." He certainly didn't say it was naive or that it lacked depth. Only that he believes different things now than he did back then - more "relative" to his age was his wording.
      However, on that same note, in a later interview than that one, Robert said of Stairway, "I struggle with some of the lyrics... Maybe I'm still trying to figure out what I was talking about."
      I think that's much closer to the truth of the matter.
      In researching this song's meaning, I read and watched numerous Plant interviews on how and why he wrote it - the Dan Rather interview included - and what I took from them collectively is that Robert was truly inspired to write the words that came out, without completely understanding their depth or meaning. He wrote what came to him. From where? Your guess is as good as mine. But he himself said in multiple interviews that he wrote them down and almost leaped out of his seat when he read them, and that they were "channeled."
      Now, this may sound crazy, like drugged-out rockstars talking nonsense, but the more I research the biggest and deepest songs of our culture, the more I run into that same answer.
      For example, McCartney dreamed Yesterday - the most successful, known, covered and played song of all time - and said it was channeled through him - "given" to him, to use his wording. He's said he believes artists are "mediums" a lot of time during the writing process.
      Lennon was kept awake all night with words plaguing his mind that wouldn't let him rest until he wrote them down - words that became Across the Universe - and he didn't know where they came from. He said, "I can't take credit for that one. It was gifted to me."
      There are several Beatles songs, the most successful band of all time, that have the same backstory.
      Of Africa by Toto, one of the biggest songs of its era, David Paich played and sang it in one go and said of that writing process, "it was like God channeling it. I thought, 'I'm talented, but I'm not that talented. Something just happened here!'"
      I have so many examples of this that, as I said, I'm putting them all into a documentary. It's actually quite starting. The biggest songs ever made are continuously claimed to have been given to the artists who wrote them, and they don't know where from or why.
      I think Serj Tankian from System of a Down said it best when he related, "the muse is there for all of us to, kind of, download, if you will. It is the collective consciousness's art wing... As artists, we can never take total credit for our art, because it's beyond us. It comes from beyond us."
      I think that's exactly where Stairway to Heaven came from. Robert was just the antenna. How he feels about it is almost secondary. It's for the listeners to figure out what message the signal he picked up was trying to say.

    • @ls1959
      @ls1959 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Lyristoric The point is, maybe there is no "deeper meaning". What is true is that everyone can interpret every song in any way that is meaningful for them, whether there is an objective deeper meaning or not. What I will say is that a lot of consequential songs have stood the test of time lyrically stronger than Stairway to Heaven. For me what makes Stairway to Heaven so great is that the music is timeless. Jimmy Page produced one of the greatest rock song musically in history.

    Everyone will have their own ideas what the song means if anything at all ! I get the feeling that it simply means to go out and think...think and then think some more....in the end you'll have your meaning ! Also that it is about what organized religion is all about, you can have good or you can have bad but if you listen to others to find your meaning then you have lost your meanings and must start thinking all over again ! I see organized religions as people trying to buy their stairway to heaven. If you go to the meetings and say the right words and treat people in a certain way then you'll buy your way into heaven or so that is what you believe but may never find heaven that is the story books !

    Well what’s great about song lyrics in general is that the listener can interpret them in whatever way they want to be able to relate them to their life and or experiences. Sometimes when the artist explains what the lyrics are really about it might lose some of the meaning to someone who has interpreted it differently. I think the best songs have the listener relating them to their own journey.

Maybe they really are there!

      @ I agree. Knowing what to listen for makes a huge difference. Though I should say that when I first heard it played backwards as a child (by myself) I did not know what to listen for other than “Satanic messages”, which a friend had mentioned. And when I played the record backward I clearly heard “here’s to my sweet Satan” toward the middle of the song. It scared the crap out of me, and I stopped listening to it within a minute or so. I think now (40+ years later) that I remember hearing parts of the whole paragraph above, though I know memory becomes distorted over time. “Satan” is probably the clearest word when it is played backwards.
