- In this video I went down to the beach in San Diego, very popular place. Was early in the morning, so less busy. Was nice to see the city lights.
Then I went down to the Salton Sea, and got to take a few roads I don't normally, which was a nice adventure! Then on the way back I went up CA-243 through Idyllwild.
Fun video with the music and all! I need to look up more Cumbia Deli songs! Also yes, even when your car indicates that you're completely on empty, you still have.a few gallons of gas to protect the car. Helps in an emergency like the one you where in!
Yes! Well, it was a self induced "emergency".. I could have just paid the $6/gallon, but I think that is absurd when a gas station down the road is $4.60. (:
But yes, quite close feeling. Glad it has a buffer.
Wow! That sunrise twisty-winding drive is enough to make one dizzy! Or carsick anyway.
The sunrise is awesome! I am disappointed my camera didn't capture it. I got some great photo's not from the dash camera I'll send you. (:
Carsick wise, I found a pretty helpful motion sick pill over at Walmart if you're interested I can tell you what it is. Need to find the bottle. Works great.
@@extralock1045 I don't take the meds. I nibble on ginger snap cookies. Ginger is good for motion sickness. 🙂
@@lynnstillwell2 Ginger never worked for me. Oh well
@@extralock1045 Taking ginger like in capsules doesn't work for me either. I have to nibble on the crunchy gingersnaps. Worked for my kids, too. We had bags in the car when we moved to a hilly area from a flat area. It took us several weeks to get used to the winding roads.
A long just for fun road trip. California traffic - God awful. You're trusty Mitsubishi Mirage did just fine. Like Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear once said, "A car is a tool." A good idea pulling over for folks in a hurry. I once drove a 1967 VW Beetle from Burbank to Jacksonville, Fl. touring Civil War battlefields and art museums. That was my longest drive.
37:37 You almost passed someone :)
That's awesome! Do you still have the beetle? Was it reliable? Also yes the California traffic is pretty absurd. It took me 1 hour to drive 8 Miles today. My bad it was an hour and 9 minutes.
On 2 lane Country Roads I do pull over and let people buy if possible. But it's not very easy if you're already going 50 miles an hour. Then you have to slow everyone down to 0 miles an hour so you can pull out.
I only pass if they are going much slower for the most part.
This car will happily cruise at 70 MPH. I don't like going that fast though. 55 Is perfect for me, comfortable speed, great MPG.
@@extralock1045 No the Beetle is gone. It was reliable if maintained. Oil change every 3,000. Air cooled so on a summer trip you had to frequently check the oil level as it also cooled the engine. The 3,000 mile valve adjustments could be to 5,000 if you did it yourself and followed the advice of the "How to keep your Volkswagen Alive" and make the gap a little larger. Most cars of the time had valves that would loosen and tick loudly. The Beetle's air cooled engine would TIGHTEN and "whistle." When you heard that whistle a burnt valve was on its way unless adjusted. The air cooled motor ran hot and needed replacement about 100,000 miles. I kept a log and put 500,000 + on it. So a number of easy to exchange engines went into it. They were very good off road for desert paths. Your Mirage like Toyota uses SHIMS for valve adjustment. There is no practical way to check the valve clearance. But as earlier Toyota Corolla and Yaris drive hundreds of thousands of miles with out a valve adj. it could be a plus. Honda's still require manual valve adjustments and will loosen and tick if not maintained. I taught my son to use the turn outs to let the impatient pass. I do it myself with cars and motorcycles even now.
The VW Beetles of 54 horsepower had a cruising speed of 75 mph and required only 7 horsepower on the level to maintain that cruising speed.
Your Mitsubishi Mirage Hatchback would be a luxury Highway Cruiser by comparison. :) An interesting little vehicle.
I would love to go on a ride with you hahahaha. Might as well go to Slab City LOL / Mecca
If you're in California I like the idea. It would be nice to have another person to come along on the trips.
I like that you're not a tailgater. 🙂
I do tailgate sometimes, not on purpose. When someone passes me, they normally move in front of me very closely. And I have no choice but either tail gate, or step on the brake. But they wanted to go faster so they will probably just speed up. (:
We don't do that in CA. Keep space its common sense on the freeways.
@@thomasthurston6656 I am in California. (:
@@extralock1045 🙂I see it plenty here as well. It's worse in Atlanta than in my small town, but tailgaters are everywhere. I will say, years ago, I noticed a difference in the drivers in big cities. We drove regularly in Atlanta, Washington DC, and Chicago. Atlanta by far had the rudest drivers, while DC had the drivers most likely to merge traffic nicely. Chicago was in the middle. We were amazed at the difference. I'm talking about driving in very similar multi-lane Interstate highways in and around the big cities.
@extralock1045 Yes, that's what I meant. People in other states have no clue about the freeways here and keeping space.
sad news... my new mirage 2021 40,000 miles just got hailed on and now has a decent amount of damage....
big sad...
but mechanically is still pristine.
How much damage does it have? Is it totaled? You might be able to get paid for repairs from the insurance
How does the Mirage's ac perform in triple degree weather in California deserts? I'm curious if it can overcome the extreme temperature and if it significantly reduces engine power or not.
@@ATAKER66 luckily for you I actually recorded a video a couple days ago in the desert. It was 122 degrees fahrenheit. Answer is with the window tint it helps a lot having the air conditioner on. It was around 89° in the car outside of the wind from the air conditioner. I had the air conditioner set to 78°. I was very comfortable in front of the air blowing.
Engine power of course is reduced. You can feel the compressor turn on and off even with cruise control set at 55 miles per hour. The car jolts a little bit.
I got 56 miles per gallon with the air conditioner on which seems pretty good. Especially for the temperature.
@@ATAKER66 I'll post the video tomorrow if I remember.
@@extralock1045 Great info, will watch it. Some newer more expensive cars have worse and less reliable ac systems so its great to see that its performs up to its task.
36:05 That grade is very deceiving, going up hill it really works the engine especially if it is underpowered, going the other way you have to be very careful you could be going over 95 and not even know it. The gas by the In & Out the very back gas station the fuel is cheap.
That hill is absurd! I climbed up the hill, though my car wasn't happy with the idea of going over 20 MPH in the steepest parts. It could go faster, much faster, just not while saving gas, and keeping the CVT temperature down.
Going down isn't too bad, just put the car in sport mode, or like 2nd gear, and it will cruise down nice and slow. Don't stay in drive/5th, or 6th, or what ever overdrive is. Keep it in a low gear, and it will go down nice and calmly.
Which In And Out? The one by El Centro? The one in Indio/Palm Springs? I been to the one in Palm Springs, never saw a gas station, but also wasn't looking for one either.
@@extralock1045 The one by Morongo near the dinosaurs.
I wonder if it helps to extend your CVT by installing a transmission fluid cooler between the transmission and the radiator. It is a common practice for vehicles used for towing. It can also extend the life of the transmission fluid.
