Power over spice is power over all...
"laughs evily over the kitchen spice rack"
😂
This was my first thought when the film started 😂
OMG😂😂😂😂😂😂☠☠
Hmm, I was expecting something like "Enthousiastic Dutch noises" 😉
Portuguese Empire moment:
I just find it interesting how all of this is happening while Shaddam is chilling at his summer home on Kaitain. Like, he’s not even at his actual palace doing Emperor business. He’s just chilling with his daughter, avoiding the tension, obeying his shame and guilt.
Isn’t Kaitan their home/palace? I know Selusa Secundus is where they came from but the imperial family settled themselves in Kaitan because it’s nice while they turned Secundus into a military/prison planet.
@@CaptainJY01 Pretty much, yeah, Kaitain is the home of House Corrino. They left Selusa because of the harsh weather.
@@CaptainJY01 Salusa Secondus was the home planet of the Corrinos and the original capital of the imperium but it was devasted by the family atomics of an unnamed house who tried to depose them, around 500 years before the events of Dune hence why they moved to Kaitain. This was one aspect of the otherwise flawless adaptions that I didn´t like. Kaitain in the books is described like Ancient Rome in its prime with buildings carved out of marble, crystal fountains and summer mediterreanean weather to boot. The film in its stead gave us a minimalist Austrain staycation villa with a couple of japanese tapestries thrown in for good measure. Pretty dissapointing
They have summer in space?
Bene Gesserit were always the real power.
Bene Gesserit without power were either part of an experiment ( the Harkonnens) or an anomaly (Jessica during the Harkonnen attack, the previous Reverend Mother when Paul stood up to her).
"He who controls the paprika controls the goulash"
magyar vagy te is, tesó? ;)
Szegedi paprika, of course
Szeretlek tesó!!! Yeahhhhhhhhhh
"He who controls the cayenne, controls the chili!"
I swear to god the shot at 4:30 is straight off of the cover of a 60's sci-fi novel. Fucking astonishing.
Reminds me of some of the covers of the Dune books
Christopher Walken, an actor known for his peculiar speaking pattern, given very little to say
His character is a dangerous person, danger is most horrific when it is silent...he gave an amazing performance and they used his presence well, we didnt see or heard him once in the first movie, but his actions talked enough, that to me is what true presence means
It shows again that Walken is a brilliant Actor, capable of saying legions with just his face.
MAHD!?
There was rumors Mads Mikkelsen was to play the Emperor at one point. He would have been a better choice.
@@lapineeeI’m not sure I’d buy him as an 80 yr old under heavy spice laden plastic surgery, personally.
Sardaurkar' quote in the beginning was awesome in theaters.
It absolutely set the tone for the experience!
That's God Emperor commenting on memories of his ancestors.

GOD EMPEROR
"Harkonnens never scared me...Atreides do...because they're popular!"
Yup, that's the answer for the people who wondering why emperor allowed to give harkonen much more power than other, no matter how strong they where, the great house will never accept harkonen as ruler, but attreides is different, more than half of great house as attreides supporters so there very high chance attreides will dethroned corinos as news empire house
@@abdulcholik7789 That's not true, the Bene Gesserit's plan was to put a Harkonnen on the throne, since Feyd's son was supposed to Rule. The emperor was cucked the moment he didn't have a male heir. House Corrino was going to lose the throne regardless.
Harkonnens are unpopular, brutish and easy to control. And their armies are no match to the Sardaukar.
“You may depend upon it that nobody will ever think of killing me to make you king.”
Charles II to his Brother James
@@abdulcholik7789
Just one question, why didnt they accept house Harkonnen, theyre literally the biggest industrial power in the galaxy, only dwarved by CHOAM and the Guild. Giedi Prime was one singular factory, meanwhile Caladan looks more interesting for tourists.
Just a thought for fans to ponder: What if the weird, alien voice at the beginning of both films is actually Leto II? As he's peering backwards through time examining his fathers legacy?
The Baron floating around like a balloon always cracks me up
Much more menacing in this movie as compared to the '85 version though.
@@paullowman9131
Still a goofy ass😂
Walken did an amazing performance as Walken.
One thing I never understood when reading the books and watching the movies. The Emperor was getting old, and knew his time was coming to an end. Thinking house Atreides may one day be a threat to him, why wouldn't he forge an alliance and want to embrace the idea of marrying his daughter to Paul, in order to ensure succession, rather than risk tyranny as a result of the Harkonnens gaining too much power? If you knew you had to find a successor to the throne through marriage of your daughter, why would he not consider an honorable house like Atreides and Paul from the get-go?
"The Emperor's a jealous man...."
Crusader Kings player spotted.
The Bene Gesserit planned the fall of House Atreides
Shaddam loved Leto like a son, but his fear, pride, and jealousy had overwriten that. I think Baron Harkonnen had been whispering on Shaddam's ear, warning him of Leto's growing popularity, the strength of his House, and the threat it poses to the Corrino Dynasty. Plus Leto was probably too old to marry Irulan.
In the end, the Emperor was but a puppet of the Bene Gesserit. They had decided the Atreides had to go, and so they set things in motion.

Blade runner 2049 was also fantastic ❤
Which being the previous one 20 years ago ? I want to give it a watch.

Damn right. One of the few who still know how to do big movies.
To be fair, he still failed in so MANY ways to capture the book, from race swapping and gender swapping Emperial planetologist to the fundamental mystery of who Paul is.
@vitaliyred622 The race-swapping of the character of Liet Kynes had the least impact on the overall narrative which is why he did it.
@@ollietaro her…or should I say HIS character is super important in the books. Here, she is just another character that serves no purpose, the only real thing she does is die by a sandworm.
I think the emperor actually did love leto as a son but was also was worried about his popularity amongst the other houses I don't believe he would have done anything if that hooded old lady hadn't manipulated the Man some time's lack of action is the best coarse that way one wouldn't invite an action that would cost lives
The best way to manipulate someone is to nurture a thought that is already in their mind.
Thats probably correct.
To add: the emperor actually feared the Atreides usurping power, as they were well-liked and had the support of the Landsraad. Leto I was also training a small but elite fighting force that, if given more time, wouldve rivalled the Sardaukar.
So, as the previous commenter said, the Emperor was already considering it, but Lady Mohiam convinced him.
You're describing something that is crucial to the plot but then slapping "I think" on it as if you independently came up with that theory on your own...

The sci-fi epic of our generation, absolutely phenomenal, must be experienced in IMAX to comprehend the sheer scale of this masterpiece.
And they call us toxic cult.
This was a great opening to Dune 2. Seeing Paul, Jessica and their Freemen allies eluding the Harkonnens. Good to see Christopher Walker and Florence Pugh as Shaddam IV and Irulan.
Jean Tatlock was really dissapointed with Oppenheimer if she had to travel half the universe to a whole new planet and assume a new identity as the daughter of padishah emperor Shaddam IV Corrino.
Paul fights the Grineer in the desert.

The harkonnen really had the grineer vibe. Especially with their gutteral language

And the plot with Chani looks bad
I Hope he made 4 hours 😂
Well, his next movie is Dune 3, so not in a while.
But Nolan, a great director as well, was also busy for a while with a Batman trilogy
The sequences with the human Embryo (here and again at the very end of the film where Jessica is talking to unborn Alia) are really jarring but in a good way. Gives perspective to the horrors that are taking place outside, and also how messed up what happened to Alia was in the end
The soundtrack that plays when the Princess is speaking is just so..... epic.....
As it was written
I wonder what game the Emperor and Irulan are playing. Probably some kind of chesslike, like the "cheops" game mentioned in the glossary.

The harkonnen salute reminds me of the 1984 salute, that was a cool scene.
🙆
I guess if you're gonna' cast someone as an exhausted old man who has seen it all its gotta' be Christopher Walken.
I like how the beginning is a sort of nod to David Lynchs Dune.
And the Emperor said............... "I GOT A FEVER!!!"

I have read the Dune book series and seen Dune 2. I would like to see it again. Excellent movie.
Chris, you are genius actor. Thakj you for your work
"Power over spice is power over all" honestly, the first 5 minutes told me all I needed to know that this movie was going to be special

the game they are playing at 1:22 is called Cheops.
Anyone else notice the similarities between the opening of this movie, and the beginning of the VNV Nation song Electronaut (from 2002)?
I was expecting the emperor to have that iconic Christopher Walken voice.
"Dreams are messages from the deep"
Christopher Walken brings an immediate sense of unbelievability.
I didn't recognise him, so it didn't bother me at all.
Why? He played the role of the emperor very well, I wished he had more screen time.
@@FOAB-Carlos oh it’s nothing to do with his acting, just who he is. He’s kind of a caricature of star.
@@SamuraiCop Spoken like someone who only knows Walken by less than half his portfolio, and appearances on SNL.
In other words you have no idea what you are talking about. Sorry to put it bluntly, but that's precisely what it sounds like.
Something makes me feel that the Emperor will request more cowbell.
Baron... Have you searched for more cowbell in the southern regions?
The most absurd thing in this absurd story is that the emperor would trust baron Harkonnen with anything.
He will 100% be a problem for the emperor in the future with the power he has.
A known problem though. And one who could never potentially command many friends in the Landsraad. Atreides nobility and charisma made them far more a danger to the Imperial house than the Harkonnen could be. Also, something that isn't overtly stated but becomes clear through subtext is that beneath their brutality, the Harkonnen are cowardly.
If you've read the book, you should know it was implied things were not going too well between the Emperor and the Baron. The chapter with Count Fenring borderline threatening the Baron and the second-to-last one with the Emperor absolutely lashing out against him are the prime example. The Emperor definitely didn't trust the Harkonnens and would have been ready to give them the Atreides treatment at any time if it hadn't been for the possibility of the Baron exposing him
I love the way that Chani is the baddest of the Fremen! You go, girl boss! Paul is just your loader! And then I couldn't stop barfing.

Dune 1965 by Frank Herbert =a book
We need a show.
HOT TAKE: I think this is the best opening scene in the movies in this century. I love ir so much. Firstly, it's looks absolutely beatiful and very atmospheric. Insane shots. Insane soundtrack and amazing unique atsmosphere. It'a literally amazing scene for understanding this lore. Dramatic, epic, futurustic, complex and variety lore.
Secondly, before Arrakis, how they perfectly showed the Emperor and his reaction to Leto's death, it was very accurate. Shaddam loved Leto as his son, but still he strove for power and therefore killed him, which was very painful for him as a man. Walken did amazing job. Same like Pugh. Just 2 minutes moment, but amazing adaptation
Did the poison tooth in part 1 mess up the Baron’s health? I noticed it was making sounds like his respiratory system was damaged at 1:53 and when the Sardaukar broke his suspensors he looked like he was dying.
No, he always needed that crap, just every portrayal has been rather inconsistent on if he needs that crap ALL the time or some of the time. But it was like that before the tooth incident regardless.
2:07
2:09
But the Harkonnen attack didn't take everyone by surprise. Leto had an idea, the Harkonnens knew, the Sardaukar knew, the Emperor knew....the Bene Gesserit knew.
Leto expected something, but not that early. What more was the sudden betrayal by Yu Wei that nobody saw coming. Hence, it was a surprise 🤷♀️ We don't get the reactions of the other major Houses, but I'd assume they were rather surprised Atreides was just gone in a night
When Irulan says "everyone" it's understood to be the Houses Major and Minor and the general populace at large. It doesn't need to be clarified, because she's speaking as someone on the inside, not someone on the outside. Also, the context is from her writing memoirs after the fact. "In The House of My Father" is an in-universe memoir written by her.
25 seconds of logos
Man, even the clips are twice as long as other movies
Wow looks really good
Hey, Paul, little man....this was your father's Ducal Signet ring...he'd be DAMNED if he'd let any Harkonnen get his spicy hands on your birthright....
The opening music needed more cow bell.
Power over spice is power over all ...
''laughs in British''
Why does Walken look like Magneto in the thumbnail?
4:05 why did he tell them to stay while the enemy is approaching ?
at this point stilgar probably didn't want to believe paul was the messiah, so if they died to the patrol then that solves one problem, also to see if they could carry their weight (my interpretation)
something else I just thought of was using the two of them as bait for the ambush
As written !
That is one cute princess.
"The end of House Atreides" and the beginning of the galactic JIHAD. OOPS!
Not gonna lie. When I first found out that Christopher Watkin was going to be the emperor, I was actually kind of annoyed not because he’s a bad actor far from it. He’s one of the best in his craft. But because I felt that being the emperor wasn’t really, a fitting character for him it wasn’t important enough. I felt that he probably should’ve been a much more powerful individual. Yes being the emperor of “the known universe“ may seem like they are extremely powerful. But we all know that the people or individuals with the real power in this universe Are the spacing guild. Aside from obviously the individuals undertaking the stewardship of Arakis.
Again, don’t get me wrong. Christopher Walken is a great actor. And as I have already said, he’s one of the best. But again I just felt that the Emperor was almost like a disservice to him. But he pulled it off well.
A narrow path.... only the righteous may tread such a fine line.....how I hope and work to be worthy... Does anyone beside me think like this?.. adversity breeds resilience..your life isn't hard...it's just a filter to see if you are one of the chosen.
I get it that they decided to use Alia as a pre-born more, but I don't think they should've hurry the story in order to fit it into few months. After all, controlling their bodies is what Bene Gesserit do by default, it is safe to assume that they can slow down the pregnancy rate until it is safe to bear a child
'You weak, pathetic, fool." Shao Kahn
I love the theory that the voice saying "power over spice is power over all" could be Leto 2 talking back in time to the audience.
Warner Brothers Spice Tower is ominous
Need more cowbell.
its too bad the emperor is a minor character in this film they should should have made an extended edition . Peter Jackson was still filming extra scenes even after the film was released.
Malkovich would have been a better emperor but Walken does good
This series (because that is what it is, it’s just not for TV) moves apart from anything Frank Herbert ever conceived. Good luck with that.
Imo, the sci-fi series captured the story very well. These movies haven’t “ felt right” to me
Never understood why the Emperor never took full control of Dune. It showed it some in the old movie but not in the new ones but the Emperor has always had trouble with the spacing guild and IX. They always viewed him as a figure head.
I think the geopolitical setup was just a plot device rather than a reflection of reasonable reality. For one, the control of Dune seems very weak given its significance. No satellite or drone presence. The Fremen don’t have force fields so the soldiers could engage with lasguns which means their tactics would be much different than shown.
@@ryanhughes1101 well, in the books. Shields made the worms go ape shit crazy. Ground forces would be eaten. Plus, it seemed like shields were pretty useless in the movie. Everything that was fired would go through them. You are right about the plot device though. Seems like a hole that someone as smart as Frank or his son would notice.
The Landsraad would through a fit if the Imperial house ever took full direct control of spice production. And the combined weight of the Houses Major was more than enough to keep House Corrino in check.
I know people HATE Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert, but ignoring people's hate, in the prequel books Shaddam's father Elrood IX was trying to circumvent this by running an artificial spice project. It failed. Obviously (in fact I think Shaddam sabotaged it if memory serves).
@@johnroscoe2406 true to all that and I’ve always enjoyed the sons novels. To me they made a little more sense than the old man’s books. Anyway, all the emperor has to do is threaten to destroy spice like Paul did. Done and done.
I have loved this film and the other renditions. I have read the book a couple of times now. This new Dune film is probably the best of all the screen adaptations. However, my one criticism is Christopher Walken as the Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV. Mr Walken is a great actor but in this role, he seemed more like an out dated hippy that never grew out of it all. I liked the other emperors from the other adaptations better. Apart from that one personnel issue, the two latest part one and two films are splendid. 😀👍
It seemed kind of a waste to have Walken in the role of the Emporer. He had very little screen time, and what there was of it, could have been played by anyone. Maybe some good stuff had to be left on the editing room floor, but the role was minor and not memorable at all.
I do believe it is Leto II speaking the opening words in both films. His recorded voice at least.
1:28 and the emperor said
nothing you idiots duke leto’s dead he’s locked in his own basement
It proves humanity doesn't improve
Why In this movie there is no alien monster coming to the emperor ?
