Sega Dreamcast was a beautiful console, very fun and I dare to say slightly ahead of it's time. What killed it (mostly) was Playstation 2 and it's ability to play DVD's. There is a rumor floating around about a Dreamcast mini classic in production, I sincerely hope it's true.
I would think Saturn mini would come first. Maybe theyl just skip to Dreamcast. People would actually buy this over ps1 mini. Sega has games ppl want to discover. Since most had ps1 at the time, Saturn/Dreamcast would feel like something new.
You are right i t was quite ahead of it´s time. Being hacked so early was the nail in the coffin that scared 3rd parties away. A Saturn Classic would be hard to emulate on a 100$ Device due to its complex Hardware. For the Dreamcast Mini the Sega nerd in me rages that you (no anyone!) should have got one while there were sold, it is not a huge console concerning housing a GD-Rom unit. ;)
@@Lightblue2222 no it wouldn't, they still haven't nailed Saturn emulation to the point where you can sell it at retail. So unless it's going to be filled with PC ports of Saturn games it's not going to happen. Dreamcast is easier to do mainly because it wasn't a mess hardware wise like the Saturn was.
YTCensorsMe Poop, you're very knowledgeable and I respect that but please don't state your opinion as if it's fact. I lived through those times and I remember that PS2's capability to play DVD's played a significant role in its popularity. Many people talked all the time back then about how this aspect helped to tip the scale in PS2's favor in a major way. So to say that PS2's ability to play DVD's had nothing to do with it is ludicrous. In 1999 and 2000 DVD players were not cheap yet, the price drop happened later. Also, both Playstation and Nintendo had a more loyal following and diehard fan base than Xbox who was a newby and Sega who disappointed many of it's fans with bogus business decisions in the 90's (32x and Sega CD). Saturn was not able to redeem Sega with PS1 and N64 as it's competition. Basically because of this Sega had a bad rap. There is a lot of factors at work here so let's agree to disagree. Earlier you stated that you're sick of people blaming PS2's DVD capability for DC's demise, I have to respectively disagree, basically there are more important things to be sick of than console wars from 20 years ago. Anyway I do thank you for shining some light on the subject for me, I always do enjoy seeing something from a different point of view. Peace and love :-) :-)
Great to hear you still have a local arcade where you live. I have one where I live and it is so nice to be able to go in and relive my youth from time to time
I miss the old Sega DreamWorks arcades... From back in the days... I use to play ALL the Sega arcade games at DreamWorks first... Before i bought dreamcast. I Miss old-school Tonka/Sega
The dreamcast is one of my favourite all time systems and the even though the ps2 could play DVD its funny to think the that playing movies was more important than playing games.. It's a shame that it didn't work out for sega. I hope there is a mini in the works.
One thing people forget is that the Dreamcast STILL couldn't match the overwhelming power of the Model 3 and NAOMI systems, especially where VRAM is concerned. Model 3 has 25 MB of VRAM, and the Dreamcast only 8 MB. This might explain the Dreamcast's inferiority in terms of textures.
I really miss going to the arcades - Sega made some seriously good (and iconic) arcade games 😊 It was Spikeout, SCUD Racer, and Daytona 2 that made me get a Dreamcast (which still don't regret to this day) 😍
I remember the first time I imported the Japanese version of Virtual On oratorio tangram, And I played it on my sega Dreamcast for the first time, I remembering my jaw hitting the floor when I saw that this was the first ever and only arcade perfect port of a sega model 3 game that ever made it to the sega Dreamcast, even on the back of the game case it said “this perfect detail by detail translation” which meant that what you saw exactly in the model 3 arcade version in the arcades was ported straight and exactly right to your sega Dreamcast
Thanks for another informative and entertaining episode. Growing up in a small city means smaller arcades. We didn't have much Model 3 to choose from and the cabinets were often hogged by older arcade bullies. Cool to find out about a few games I never heard of and need to now check out.
@@SegaLordX oh okay thanks for clearing that up.I couldn't remember exactly who it was by since I hadn't played it since 2001 when I was 1 all I remember was it being at the arcade then straight to Dreamcast.

Another fantastic video. I've been a Dreamcast owner for about a year not and Im ever so slowly building up the library for it so thanks for these great videos.
The Lost World - Jurassic Park was literally the reason I bought a Dreamcast after seeing a screenshot of it next to a Dreamcast on a generic ad in the back of a GamePro magazine. I immediately recognized what game it was after playing it so many times in the arcade and that was it - my reason to buy a Dreamcast when I already had a PS2. Then it never came out. Years later, I was reading a copy of Dreamcast magazine (I think it was a UK publication, and I think it was the first issue) and found out they wrote that a port WAS in development for Dreamcast and that it was rumored that it would include a port of the original Jurassic Park game as an unlockable bonus feature. Do I fully believe the article I read at all? No, because I never trust biased, single-console-focused publications at all, but...man, I wonder if it was true at all and there's an unreleased build sitting on some dev kit out there somewhere.
Excellent point regarding the Harley Davidson licensing. It makes me wonder what prevented that title from seeing a home release, knowing that Harley so desperately needed to attract young people to the brand in order to make them future customers.
I can understand why those light gun games never got a release. SOA never released the Stunner in the West and we were left with 3rd party options. I had two different 3rd party light guns and they did not work well with my 27" Sony Wega television. It was hit or miss with those light guns, and it really depended on what kind of television you had.
@referral madness Now it would be less of an excuse but back then we weren't so connected. The price of importing was crazy high and finding a place to buy it from wasn't that easy. If you weren't an adult or a kid that had parents with money its basically impossible
@referral madness Sega was pouring their remaining money into the North American Dreamcast market, that was outselling Japan and Europe. Releasing light gun games to your most profitable market, without having the official light guns supported there, wouldn't make sense. I wouldn't have bought those (unless they came packed with a DC Stunner), because of the horrible experience I had with the light gun games that were brought here.
Another excellent video. Very sad to see so many games we may never get a chance to officially play. Sega never should have killed themselves off the way they did, they did so much for gaming as a whole and deserve to still be here over the likes of Sony or Microsoft, who were never primarily game software manufacturers.
I wish you would have mention the 60fps code for Sega rally 2. If anyone has a problem with how it plays or runs, just input that code and it's like magic. Steady 60fps.
Man I miss the mid to late 90's arcades As much money as I use to waste with my first part time job as a teenager,I wouldn't trade those days in for anything The sands of time sure have brought death to such a great time in gaming history that future generations will never experience.
I remember a glitch on Shun Di in VF3 that if you stand at the edge of the boat if would flip over and over. I bought my Import Dreamcast in January 1999 with VF3, Sonic Adventure and Sega Rally 2 but the real reason I imported it was I knew SF3 wasn’t coming to the Sega Saturn even with the 4mb ram cart. Street Fighter 3 W Impact finally got released in December 1999 I was a happy man......it dosen’t feel it was 19 years ago.
Great stuff, I'm heavy into System 3 emulation and I love Ambulance and LA Riders. The last I played in arcades quite a lot. I can see that there isn't to much in there to make it a $50 purchase worth of content and maybe the arcade games didnt gain enough response. anyhow, I love you content, keep it coming!
Great Content as always! Awesome Video! I really think the Dreamcast could of used more arcade titles. Sega seemed to forget who they were later in the hardware war. It was thier Awesome arcade ports that got us as customers! Stick to what you know, expand and revolutionize that's the Sega we grew to love!
Dreamcast is my favorite system of all time such awesome games and it ended too soon and the ceo of sega at the time died for the system by asking for help to keep the dreamcaat alive and i refused to buy a ps2.
One thing that I think would've prolonged the Dreamcast's life definitely if it used a DVD rom, the PS2 really gained a sudden momentum from the Japanese public as soon as it was known that it would offer DVD playback, despite the excitement and support the Dreamcast had already established, if both the PS2 & Dreamcast shared this feature, it would've been a closer race between the two, and the DC wouldve flourished similarly the same way the Saturn did already in Japan..but at this point it's nice to know that despite Sega abandoning the system the public never actually did and some pretty amazing games were developed for it even after it was killed of, particularly by the homebrew community...i know because I continually keep finding them, and still adding games to my DC library :) some badass shooters
I'm glad I wasn't suckered into buying a PlayStation 2 just because everyone else was doing so, especially since the console just didn't have many games that appealed to me other than ports of existing titles.
@@InmortalWarlordGaming at the time I wanted ps2 for grand theft auto 3. I skipped the dreamcast and went from n64 to ps2. But later appreciated the dreamcast.
The Dreamcast version of The House Of The Dead 2 was a an arcade perfect conversion of the Sega Model 3 arcade board though. In terms of game play, graphics and sound the two versions were absolutely identical. Back in 1999 when I owned the Dreamcast version of the game I used to walk to my local arcade and play the coin-op version just to compare the two, for the life of me I couldn't see any differences, they were straight up identical. Even today, now we have the luxury of side by side comparison videos I still can't see any differences between the two. The Dreamcast was not merely running a port of the arcade version, it totally WAS running the arcade version.
In case anyone still read this: HotD2 on the DC was *NOT* "absolutely identical" in terms of graphics ! Due to the memory limitations of the DC the texture size/resolution had to be reduced (drastically on certain points). So I'am sorry, but in terms of fact or false, this is: False.
Love some crazy taxi. At least that made it to DC. Honestly, they should have embraced their arcade ports. I really feel like if they hadn't just given up, Dreamcast should have had a full life. I think they were just scared of Sony.
I was always under the impression that the Dreamcast was overall superior to the Model 3 hardware and was more akin to the newer Naomi. Crazy Taxi on Dreamcast looked amazing and better than any Model 3 game, there was no good excuse for why Model 3 ports weren't essentially perfect on Dreamcast.
Makes sense that Sega was reluctant to release ports of these arcade games, especially since similar arcade ports were trashed in reviews by gaming publications at the time. All we wanted to see at that time were adventure and rpg games, unfortunate.
You know what would be super cool? If Sega went back for the 20th anniversary of the Dreamcast's launched and ported Scud Race and Daytona 2 for it. One can dream...
I've already commented, but i wanted to say thanks again, i like that you took some time to make this video even tho you didn't plan on doing it. I always thought that the Dreamcast was more powerful than the model 3 while also being way cheaper, but when you see those side by side comparisons, you can tell that the model 3 board was more powerful, and could achieve way more.. Maybe the Dreamcast could have achieved better graphics with time, I guess we'll never know.
Sega should do an arcade perfect hd collection of the sega model 1 arcade games, the sega model 2 arcade games and the sega model 3 arcade games and released in volume sets for us sega fans.
Sadly, VO:OT in the US and Europe didn't get the online features and twin sticks the Japanese release received. You could've imported the twin sticks, but they were VERY expensive and in very short supply.
I truly enjoyed this feature. And, I share the baffled thoughts of why more of these didn't get released on DC. I've logged many hours on DC Vf3tb, SR2, and SEGA bass fishing with the fishing controller. It's nice to have Daytona 3 and Scud Racer content on Xbox Outrun 2, but it's not the same as having the real games.
Scud Race not getting ported would have been down to licensing. The BPR Global GT Series that the cars were modelled from, turned into the FIA GT Championship a year after the game came out, so all the licensing agreements probably got annulled.
It still kinda disappoints me that many of these Model 3 classics didn't get ported to the DC due to licensing issues. I remember ten years ago when I first laid my eyes on Harley-Davidson & L.A. Riders at a Dave & Busters and got hooked. Same said with Scud Race/Super GT, Daytona USA 2 and Lost World, although all these are licensed as well. Thanks to emulator-developing geniuses, Supermodel runs all these well despite the audio being muddy.
@@jacklazzaro9820 I don't hate the DC controller, and at the time it had analog triggers and jump pack and screen which were great for some games. But it tires my hand out, and doesn't have the ease and accuracy of control as Saturn 6 button, especially when playing 2D fighters. I try to use that tiny dpad but often press 3 directions at once with my big thumb. Those Ascii FT pads looked awesome to me, but I never picked one up and now they are hard to get.
Of the Model 3 to Dreamcast ports, I think Virtual On OT (M3 Step 2.0) is the best. Sega Rally 2 could've used a little more dev time for optimisation.
It starts to look like Daytona 2 and Scud Race are gone forever. Differences between architecture meant that Model 3 -games were pain in the arse to convert to other system. However, according to Yu Suzuki, Dreamcast is more advanced system than Model 3.
I love your peace on VF3 yes genki was criticized for rushing the port to make the DC launch date however when I play my Japanese DC port it actually just screams model 3 cuz I don’t really know what the differences are from the model 3 arcade Version to the DC home port so when I see the DC Version I pretty much see the model 3 arcade port right in my home, genki I THINK lol didnt do that bad of a job some may think genki butchered the DC home port badly but I give them credit to bringing it home at all and they did a damn well job
In all seriousness, they could have released Sega Super GT and Daytona USA on one disc, or each on a separate disc sold for $30-40 bucks. That way you still get a great game and a value price. I remember buying Sonic Adventure 2 brand new in 2000, and paid $57 with tax for it.
So much missed potential. Would've loved to see Daytona 2 and Scud Race on the Dreamcast. Heck on any system for that matter. Still hoping for a Switch port. Never knew about Ocean Hunters. That game looks awesome.
I didn't even know of half of the games the Dreamcast never got. And Daytona 2 and Star Wars Arcade Trilogy, never making in to the Dreamcast are the biggest dissapoiments of them all. Especially because those two could have been the killer aps Sega desperately needed. Having said that its also understandable why Sega didn't port them because the Dreamcast is pretty much an arcade machine and flooded with arcade ports. Its a great pick up and play console and its why I stil enjoy it today. But it has very little long lasting, substantial games.
I read the Virtua Fighter 3 port was using early dev kits that only used like 45% of the Dreamcast power and Fighting Vipers 2 is a good port but it must have been rushed since the developer did such a great job with Virtual On! Sega Rally 2 I read the reason for the downgrades and performance was Windows CE! Honestly looking at the rest of the games, the Dreamcast could have done them and many probably would have been arcade perfect but yes it would have taken some real effort to make that happen and some titles might have needed some downgrading but not a lot and it's a real shame Sega didn't do more with these games! I read there was a port of Sega Trilogy Arcade coming but it never made it and it's a real shame!
I think internal politics probably played a part in things. Maybe the arcade side of Sega just didn't want to be involved with the Dreamcast, which might explain why Sega farmed out Model 3 conversions. Still, I don't buy the 'Dreamcast wasn't powerful enough' line entirely. Clever coders (and Sega had some awesome programming talent) could have found ways around the inevitable limitations (expecting a home console to do arcade perfect Model 3 at the time was stretching things!). Model 2 games on the Satrun were generally very good, VF2 still looks great in its high res glory and Last Bronx was amazing, you could be forgiven in thinking the underground backgrounds were fully 3D instead of brilliant use of VDP2! The whole Saturn/Dreamcast eras were very bittersweet for hardcore Sega fans.
Amazing that at some point , some at Sega were pushing for a Saturn port of VF3 , even in 1998/9 it was still extremely good looking (heck it looked better than the orginal Soul Calibur arcade). From my knowledge, the model 3 was upgraded a number of times over the years with a faster CPU and GPU, so it may well be that the later revisions did surpass the Dreamcast, although I don't think that is the reason as Sega had a history of downgrading its arcade games for home versions. It may well have simply been Sega's financial situation at the time, and the fact that arcades were dying in the west (keeping in mind the west was the market Sega was concerned with following the Saturn)
Honestly I was too damn spoiled having a ps1 and a Sega Dreamcast at the time. I really got the dreamcast mainly for shenmue and being a resident evil fan of course code Veronica.
Wow, that was really cool. I think a movie theater near me might still have the Jurassic Park game--never realized that was a Sega Model 3! Always love to see Saturn and Dreamcast stuff like this. :D Do you have any plans to do a similar type of comparison for the Dreamcast and Naomi/Naomi 2?
sega should seriously consider a model 3 collection retro collection on current gen consoles

Pure arcade perfection!
6:24 yes, I agree. You know your stuff and you're honest.
Because you gave Virtua Striker a mention and a praise I know you must have played this on the original arcade and dreamcast. Superb video simply superb..
YTCensorsMe Poop No
YTCensorsMe Poop, you're very knowledgeable and I respect that but please don't state your opinion as if it's fact.
Sega Lord X , thanks for continuing to put out quality videos like this. I always look forward to the next .
Great to hear you still have a local arcade where you live. I have one where I live and it is so nice to be able to go in and relive my youth from time to time
It's run down these days and many of the games have problems, but I'm still grateful its there.
I miss the old
Sega
DreamWorks arcades...
From back in the days...
I use to play ALL the Sega arcade games at DreamWorks first... Before i bought dreamcast.
I Miss old-school
Tonka/Sega
The dreamcast is one of my favourite all time systems and the even though the ps2 could play DVD its funny to think the that playing movies was more important than playing games.. It's a shame that it didn't work out for sega. I hope there is a mini in the works.
One thing people forget is that the Dreamcast STILL couldn't match the overwhelming power of the Model 3 and NAOMI systems, especially where VRAM is concerned. Model 3 has 25 MB of VRAM, and the Dreamcast only 8 MB. This might explain the Dreamcast's inferiority in terms of textures.
I really miss going to the arcades - Sega made some seriously good (and iconic) arcade games 😊
It was Spikeout, SCUD Racer, and Daytona 2 that made me get a Dreamcast (which still don't regret to this day) 😍
I remember the first time I imported the Japanese version of Virtual On oratorio tangram, And I played it on my sega Dreamcast for the first time, I remembering my jaw hitting the floor when I saw that this was the first ever and only arcade perfect port of a sega model 3 game that ever made it to the sega Dreamcast, even on the back of the game case it said “this perfect detail by detail translation” which meant that what you saw exactly in the model 3 arcade version in the arcades was ported straight and exactly right to your sega Dreamcast
Thanks for another informative and entertaining episode. Growing up in a small city means smaller arcades. We didn't have much Model 3 to choose from and the cabinets were often hogged by older arcade bullies. Cool to find out about a few games I never heard of and need to now check out.
Locally I was much in the same boat. I needed to travel a little to the bigger arcades growing up.
Damn, Sega Lord X is gonna start covering the Dreamcast library...hype
you forgot to mention my all time favorite arcade/Dreamcast game Zombie Revenge.
there's no time! 😁
Zombie Revenge was a Naomi based game.
@@SegaLordX oh okay thanks for clearing that up.I couldn't remember exactly who it was by since I hadn't played it since 2001 when I was 1 all I remember was it being at the arcade then straight to Dreamcast.
@@monsieurdubitatif8567 LOL I still find myself saying "there's no time" to this day sometimes because of that game. I'm sure at this point no one knows what the hell I'm quoting but at least it gives myself a chuckle.
@@shamrice lol Zombie Reveng,Diehard Arcade,NBA Jam and Run and Gun 1 and 2 are my favorite arcade games of all time.
I’ve been waiting what seems like forever for a new vid. I’m addicted.
This one took me longer than expected. Editing the dual screens is tedious work.
The Dreamcast tech demo for Sega Super GT ran 30fps and had a reduced draw distance with slight noticable pop in.
Another fantastic video. I've been a Dreamcast owner for about a year not and Im ever so slowly building up the library for it so thanks for these great videos.
No problem, Kevin.
Headhunter proved the DC could handle an open-city motorbike game. It’s a shame Harley Davidson wasn’t ported.
All these Model 3 games never made into Dreamcast still deserves a remaster for PC and will sell a lot.
I wish you would have mention the 60fps code for Sega rally 2. If anyone has a problem with how it plays or runs, just input that code and it's like magic. Steady 60fps.
It's too bad Daytona 2 would've be awesome on the Dreamcast though. Thanks for the episode, Sega Lord X. :)
Awesome episode! I love arcade games! Great job SLX!
Man I miss the mid to late 90's arcades
As much money as I use to waste with my first part time job as a teenager,I wouldn't trade those days in for anything
The sands of time sure have brought death to such a great time in gaming history that future generations will never experience.
I fucken love you Sega lord x!!! You always bring out my best childhood memories!!
I played the Ocean Hunter in Seattle, and my brother was shocked that we were killing wildlife in the game.
Dreamcast is my favorite system of all time such awesome games and it ended too soon and the ceo of sega at the time died for the system by asking for help to keep the dreamcaat alive and i refused to buy a ps2.
Bruh I loved the dreamcast just as much as you but the ps2 was definitely top systems of all time.
@@InmortalWarlordGaming you are delusional. Ps2 is 99% shovel ware.
House of the Dead 2 was a Naomi based arcade release, not Model 3. It was perfect because of the DC being based on the same tech.
In case anyone still read this: HotD2 on the DC was *NOT* "absolutely identical" in terms of graphics !
Due to the memory limitations of the DC the texture size/resolution had to be reduced (drastically on certain points).
So I'am sorry, but in terms of fact or false, this is: False.
vf3 tb was stunning for dc
Love some crazy taxi. At least that made it to DC. Honestly, they should have embraced their arcade ports. I really feel like if they hadn't just given up, Dreamcast should have had a full life. I think they were just scared of Sony.
A sports game done right. You're the legend..
Awesome video, never seen one like that before, greate job! Shame we dnt get so many of this fantastic games on DC :/
Makes sense that Sega was reluctant to release ports of these arcade games, especially since similar arcade ports were trashed in reviews by gaming publications at the time. All we wanted to see at that time were adventure and rpg games, unfortunate.
Maaaaan..... I wish slash out, and spike out would have been released on DC.
You know what would be super cool? If Sega went back for the 20th anniversary of the Dreamcast's launched and ported Scud Race and Daytona 2 for it. One can dream...
Thank you so much for including Ocean Hunter.
That game gets no love.
Had the Dreamcast been around longer, maybe we could have gotten Daytona 2.. Seriously, what a shame.
Still saddens me to this day that The Lost World and Star Wars Trilogy Arcade never saw DC ports. Talk about killer apps!
Not the same at all. Those games need a modern release badly.
Scud Race not getting ported would have been down to licensing. The BPR Global GT Series that the cars were modelled from, turned into the FIA GT Championship a year after the game came out, so all the licensing agreements probably got annulled.
If it had scud race and Daytona 2 I wouldn't have just sold mine.
Was waitng for them games aswell to release dam I was sad
Add a near arcade perfect Sega Rally 2 toi that list and you would have had a KILLER machine for racers
Mannn i always wanted scud race on the dreamcast.. maybe had the system lasted longer we would've got our port. Anyway great vid!
Ocean Hunter!!!
My favorite Sega arcade game!!
They NEED to release a consumer version.
They should put it on Switch's Sega Ages or Steam.
3tb looks arcade looks like darker shading and dreamcast version looks like someone turned up the brightness
Yo. Who here thinks Sega should've stuck with the arcade 6-button layout for the Dreamcast?
Agreed. DC controller , especially its tiny dpad, isnt that great.
Cafeman, whattaya mean? Like they should've reused the Saturn's d-pad?
Fighting vipers 2 over vf3tb for me, man I wish we got a fighters megamix for Dreamcast.
Fighters Megamix 2 with Last Bronx guys thrown in. Coulda been awesome.
It starts to look like Daytona 2 and Scud Race are gone forever. Differences between architecture meant that Model 3 -games were pain in the arse to convert to other system. However, according to Yu Suzuki, Dreamcast is more advanced system than Model 3.
Does anyone remember playing Psychic Force 2012 on Dreamcast? That was a very fun fighting game way before its time!
Happy Birthday, Dreamcast! 20 years!
Cool. I have 7 Dreamcasts (some for parts but someday the broken ones will get GDEmu).
In all seriousness, they could have released Sega Super GT and Daytona USA on one disc, or each on a separate disc sold for $30-40 bucks. That way you still get a great game and a value price. I remember buying Sonic Adventure 2 brand new in 2000, and paid $57 with tax for it.
Love the DC
Brings back great memories, great job!!
Also your channel is pretty damn good sir well done 👏I'm tuning in for sure.
Thanks bud. :)
Having said that its also understandable why Sega didn't port them because the Dreamcast is pretty much an arcade machine
and flooded with arcade ports.
I am surprised you mentioned the ocean hunter that game was made only for the arcade.
Luckily I can still find most of these arcade games in The Netherlands. The others I played earlier elsewhere. Never seen a Spike Out Cabinet though.
I've seen 2 in the wild, but both in very large cities.
Not even a mention of Ferrari F355 Challenge, that is a good arcade conversion on the Dreamcast.
F355 was a Naomi based game, not a Model 3 arcade game. :)
I still want the lost world arcade to come home
There is just something special about model 3 games.
My favourite platforms!
Thats a nice list of games that didnt get release.
Do you have any plans to do a similar type of comparison for the Dreamcast and Naomi/Naomi 2?
