I wonder if anyone from the homebrew community attempted a homebrewed version of cryptic killer for the Sega Saturn that recembles the arcade version as close as the Sega Saturn will allow?
This is a great selection and topic. Seeing how developers handled the Saturn’s complex architecture differently was absolutely awesome to hear from your knowledgeable perspective.
Love this channel. You actually informed me of the english translation of Symphony of the Night for Saturn and have turned me onto many great Saturn titles I never would have tried before. Keep up the great work, Sega Lord!
Darius Gaiden was one of my personal favorites. The music, selectable stages and the nautical theme all appealed to me. You know you really enjoy a game, when you place it in your CD player to listen to its soundtrack.
Sega Rally on the Saturn is one of the few games I truly mastered. I played it so often that I could complete it flawlessly without making a single mistake. This was back in 2003 though and I would probably suck at it now.
Amusingly years later I found out that my best time would have been a world record at the time I got it, and one of the fastest in general, in Sega Rally. We didn't have the internet back then when I was young, so I had no idea my crazy obsession with trying to go faster and faster had led me that far until a long time later. I would play the same track for hours non-stop.
I bought a Saturn for the arcade ports. I don't have a huge number of titles (it's in the 40's), but the overwhelming majority of them are arcade conversions.
Crypt Killer is a fantastic game, that i still play to this day. Yes it doesn’t look good, but that adds uniqueness. Crypt Killer & House Of The Dead sit proudly in my game cabinet today and are played (along with other’s) every time we have a family get together
Since my bro and I were always just renting the Saturn back in the day we always had the dual light guns some great early gaming memories there that's for sure

Last December I could visit a couple of retro arcades in Akihabara, and among many great games, they had the deluxe cabinets for Night Striker, Out Run, Afterburner, and many more. Heck, they even had an Hyper Neogeo 64 🤯 After the initial shock, my first thought was how much SLX would love to play with them. And that is when I realized I'm addicted to your channel 🤣 Keep up the good work man 😉
I got the Pal version of King of Fighters 95, SO glad they released it over here. Some kid came to my house and asked if I had a NeoGeo when he saw the cart in the Saturn. Also Bought Darius Gaiden the day before buying a Saturn and loved the music.
@@SegaLordX Because it missed that "next-gen" feeling that PS1 had at the time. Saturn have good games, but most of them look like enhanced 16-bit games or like in this case arcade ports. Main Saturn problem in my opinion was not having enough real 3D games, and that was because of it's complex architecture.
17:40 History will say that but the futute history, which will include us and the retro gamimg community, will say that the Sega Saturn is an awesome console which was unappreciated during its time but it later gets the love it has. The legacy of it will change in the future.
I like this series a lot. I really loved having a Saturn when it was current because arcade games were my main interest in those days. There were plenty of console exclusives, some of them quite fantastic like Dragon Force, but I always would go back to arcade and arcade-style games as the core of my library. In the early days of the Saturn, I was more about 3D because it was the new thing. Sega was really good at 3D arcade game design then. Later in the system's lifespan, I gravitated back toward 2D largely thanks to the RAM cart games, with fighters being a big part of that, with Marvel Superheroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown 4, and King of Fighters 97 being highlights for me. I know where you're coming from with the approach to Fighting Vipers compared to Virtua Fighter 2. I didn't have Fighting Vipers, but when I had Fighter Megamix, I wished it had Virtua Fighter 2's resolution. On the flip side, I wished VF2 had Megamix's additional graphics effects. I see in the notes part three is coming. I know KOF '97 and Virtual On are already on your radar, but I do look forward to those two. I've been recently playing Virtual On 2 for Dreamcast and have been having a lot of fun. The original was one of the true highlights of my Saturn library. It's also one of my favorite gaming memories because I saw a TV commercial for the game and just thought it looked cool without knowing what it was. Because it was a Sega arcade game, I trusted it would likely be good so I bought it not knowing what to expect and it turned out to be different from what I thought, but more fun than I imagined. KOF '97 was a great gaming memory for me too, but I've shared that one before.
I remember the day that the MK2 port was released in the stores such as Electronic Boutique. It was such a disappointment for something that should have been more than an Arcade perfect conversion. If they worked hard to make the game arcade perfect and packaged in MK1, it would have sold aplenty even though it arrived well after the 16-bit releases. If I remember, the only MK I purchased on the Sega Saturn was Ultimate MK3, which was a spectacular conversation (perfect even). It was so good that if you were excellent on the Saturn version, you could easily conquer the arcade version as well.
I never got into Sega Saturn much. I loved Genesis and Game Gear, but PS1 and N64 quickly caught my attention while Saturn was always kind of struggling along in the background.
dreamcast was the champ when it came to arcade games. mvc2 was played on dreamcast for years in tournament(up until it came to xbla) because of how perfect the port was.
I still have Mortal Kombat 2 on the Saturn, and here's an issue that I found with it. Any Fatality that requires you to start holding a button during the fight is impossible to pull off as the timer resets at "Finish Him!" Mileena's man eater (3 seconds) is still possible. Both of Raiden's fatalities (6&8 seconds) or Shang Tsung's Kintaro morph (25 seconds) I've never been able to do. Stick with the 32x in this case.
Thanks to you I can really enjoy the Saturn library. I just got one with a Fenrir and a crt (I luckily found a free one). Your videos help understanding the games mechanics, context, highlights obscur gems. I like your passion :) An other guy, pandamonium, is doing great stuff too.
It would be interested to have a Arcade vs. Dreamcast. I think there's lots of Arcade games that came to the Dreamcast, such as Soul Calibur, NFL Blitz 99 (2000 - home version), Power Stone, etc. That's a lot of work to do the Arcade vs. Dreamcast Chronicles. 😔 I still miss the Sega Dreamcast - so much memories...
The SS MKII port had slowdown/loading everytime u did a fatality or a special move for the 1st time in a match without mentioning the damn micro-loadings for shang tsung transformations (the bane of every CD based port if i m correct)...gfx were good and quite faithful to the arcade though
Even with just the standard 2mb ram the game should have turned out better than it did with both graphics and sound and the little pauses never should have happened too.
Love your stuff. My wife may not be a fan as watching your vids has driven me to repurchase a Saturn and games. All Japanese for cost purposes of course (plus I just had to have that black light gun vs orange). None the less, thanks for all you do. Again, I love your content!

I'm a huge Mortal Kombat 2 fan and I was excited when I bought MK2 for Sega Saturn in 1995 when I was 17! Only to come home disappointed when I found out how bad it sucked balls so much was missing and and I assumed to rather play the Genesis port instead. While the Sega Saturn version of pit fatality looked good... The gameplay was like Silly Putty you gave Mortal Kombat 2 Sega Saturn way more good points and credit for being good then I did. My favorite HomePort is Mortal Kombat 2 Genesis 32x for right now ‼️🙏🏻☯️🧘♂️
Darius Gaiden & Elevator Action Returns, 2 truly memorable games which are also included in the Taito Legends 2 compilation for PS2 & XBOX, mind you the emulation on that compilation probably doesn't hold a candle to these Saturn conversions.
I love Night Striker. I've always thought about buying the Saturn version, but I already have it on Sega CD, PS1, and later got it again on one of the Taito Memories compilations, so there are already 3 versions in my home. I wish the Saturn version had the special remix of the Sega CD version soundtrack as well, because that version looks so rough...
Yes, Crypt Killer on the Saturn does feel severely cut back but even so, you are in for a good game if you can look past its downsides. Have a good one, Sega Lord X!
14:36 Great video, but I think you forgot to mention the name of the Capcom robot fighting game (I believe it's Cyberbots: Full Metal Madness). Maybe add a list of game in the description so people can play it on MAME. Thanks for your hard work.
Damn, I use to love Akclaim, especially Team Iguana back in the day. I had MK2 on the 32X so I didn't bother with the Saturn version. The 32X MK2 was solid, characters were a bit small for it's time but they were clean. I think the background was the Genesis version with foreground and characters updated using the 32X power. On the Saturn had MK 3 Ultimate which solid besides the mesh transparency on some the characters like Smoke.
DF retro did a deep dive on this. The backgrounds were drawn by the Mega Drive, but because the mega drive wasn’t doing anything else like characters and UI, they were able to use more colours. They have done a whole breakdown on each 32X game and what was done by the ad on and what was done by the main system. On some games it’s really surprising how little the 32x actually does. Knuckles Chaotix is basically a 16 bit game with the 32 X only doing some Sprite work for scaling effects and the 3D bonus stage. The videos are super interesting they did.
@@sloppynyuszi I can believe it as the backgrounds appears to have the Genesis limited color capabilities complete with dithering. When you think about the 32X and Genesis graphics processing, it's almost the exact way the Saturn uses VDP1&2. Using emulators you can turn off each VDP and segments of the screen will disappear a lot like the Genesis and 32X. Like I've heard the Saturn 3D hardware was bolted on at the last minute making making a 2D system 3D, again similar to the 32X Genesis. Sega in the 90s were weird with two hardware teams always competing against each other.
@@sloppynyuszi Competition sega had with each other. Made them to lose a lot of money. Sega should've choose either one hardware design for the Saturn (Non-compatible Saturn Project or Backward compitable Saturn Project) or a cleaner/efficient 2D/3D design.
@@maroon9273 Sega is over rated with their hardware. They never implemented tech that could imitate their Arcades properly. The Mega Drive didn’t have any scaling capabilities, and when the Mega CD add on did, no one implemented it. Why wasn’t even one super scaler arcade ported to the Mega CD? It’s crazy that Sega and Namco basically pioneered the arcades with 3D games and Sega made the Saturn 3D capabilities a last minute thing. Like how do you create Daytona, and not have a home system be able to play a descent home conversion of it. It’s like comparing Master System altered beast to the Arcade. And when they finally became a third party company they segmented their games across three platforms, so it was impossible to have all the Sega games without owning the 3 main consoles. They published and developed some of my all time favourite games, but their business strategy made it very hard to stay a Sega fan.
@@hababacon I think as an add on, it’s smart to use a combination of the two systems. I think the 32X is under rated. It’s also a shame the cartridge slot on the Saturn couldn’t play them. It would incentivise more games for it than. It would be the 90s equivalent of the master system card slot, where the smaller games came.
Good news, Capcom just announced Capcom Fighting Collection releasing in June for all modern platforms and Cyberbots will be included in the collection.
If you wanted great arcade conversions and didn't want to spend a fortune on a Neo Geo in the 90's, Sega's consoles had some of best of them! Between the Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast, there were a number of excellent arcade ports! The Saturn was an absolute 2D powerhouse and had so many arcade gems (though, many were Japanese-exclusive). I actually owned Fighting Vipers on the Saturn, but had never played the arcade version. I still think it is a fantastic fighting game and well worth checking out!
I just really like the content of this channel. I love how professional and how entertaining all of your videos are. I really hope that you keep getting more subscribers. Much success to you!
Just in case yall dont no, both this cyber bots and the side scroller beat em up is about 2dollars each on capcom arcade on steam and xbox, probs ps too. Brilliant
With regards to Fighting Vipers I think that it got the most important bit into the game which was the 3D fence without it the game wouldn't have felt like Fighting Vipers since the gameplay partially relies on it.
I had the kof 95 first in the Japanese version, then I bought the European version and it was a real disappointment with the 50hrz limitation. There is a patch for the kof 95 which allows you to play with a 4mb cartridge ( or an action replay 4mb) instead of the rom cartridge. I do a quick video on my channel this weekend with a versus screen to see if there is any difference in loading times. You have done as always a great video 👍
Picked up Cyberbots a while ago through Sendico, even scored the book with it. Very cool game! I'd love to get Elevator Action as well but the prices even on import are insane!
Sendico isn’t definitely the way to go to get japanese Saturn games in great condition for a solid price. The shipping can sometimes be high on it though, nevertheless good pick up
Excellent. In hindsight, only being in a position to have one Gen 5 console (I'm 10 years younger than SLX) I don't regret going with a PlayStation over a Saturn or N64, especially in North America. However, as an adult with access to Japanese games, I play my Saturn a lot more than I do PS1. Having kids, I spend a lot more time playing fighting games, Shmups, and Beat-em-Ups than long single player adventures, so the Saturn gets most of my modern 5th Gen play.
I consider myself lucky that I chose the Saturn in 1995. It definitely was the right fit for me. I eventually got a used PS1 as a secondary system when the Saturn market dried up in 1998 so I was covered there and I liked it. But I was so into the Saturn's arcade ports and arcade-style originals like Panzer Dragoon. I've since gravitated back toward those quicker, intense, arcade-style experiences in the genres you mentioned. Beat-em-ups are my favorite. Fighting games are among the most satisfying short experiences out there and the Saturn is a great system for many of those home ports. I don't know if you've played it, but Virtual On is one of my favorite Saturn arcade ports and it can be quite satisfying in a very short play session. It takes a bit of adjustment at first learning the controls and strategy. I've been playing the Dreamcast sequel in recent days and have been having a blast. Virtual On for the Saturn is one of my favorite gaming memories because I bought the game after seeing TV commercials without knowing what it was but thinking it looked cool while I trusted in Sega's arcade development. It was way more fun than I expected.
KoF95 (and other SNK fighters) is actually a port of the Neogeo CD version which is why it isn't 100% perfect to the cart version. despite a few missing animations on the match ups screens it's definitely more fun to play than the NGCG because of much faster load times and more challenging to play than the ps1 version which was dumbed down in game play and the controls not feeling got. 👍
I really think you must be the best retro gaming TH-cam channel. The frequency of output and the high quality maintained are just brilliant.

I wonder if anyone from the homebrew community attempted a homebrewed version of cryptic killer for the Sega Saturn that recembles the arcade version as close as the Sega Saturn will allow?
Not worth it when the game is not good
This is a great selection and topic.
Thank you. Always good to hear someone enjoying Saturn because of me.
Time has a way of being cruel to your skills.
Elevator Action Returns will never get old. Still looks, feels and plays fresh and sweet today.
I bought a Saturn for the arcade ports. I don't have a huge number of titles (it's in the 40's), but the overwhelming majority of them are arcade conversions.
I lived for arcade ports during its life. It’s mostly what I played.
25 years later and Crypt Killer makes millions rebranded as Minecraft!!!
Crypt Killer is a fantastic game, that i still play to this day. Yes it doesn’t look good, but that adds uniqueness. Crypt Killer & House Of The Dead sit proudly in my game cabinet today and are played (along with other’s) every time we have a family get together
I miss pausing to read the tech specs like the last video but this was still a great piece. Thanks!
Since my bro and I were always just renting the Saturn back in the day we always had the dual light guns some great early gaming memories there that's for sure
SLX!!!! Thank u, u promised me about ELEVATOR ACTION RETURNS a few months ago and u kept ur promise, what a great guy and what a great channel, the man promises something and delivers to his fans, what an all round swell guy.
i never knew a home version of this game exists, wished i knew long time ago, one of my fave arcade games ever.
And that is when I realized I'm addicted to your channel 🤣 Keep up the good work man 😉
Night Striker S is everything my imagination loves
I got the Pal version of King of Fighters 95, SO glad they released it over here. Some kid came to my house and asked if I had a NeoGeo when he saw the cart in the Saturn. Also Bought Darius Gaiden the day before buying a Saturn and loved the music.
I was shocked Europe got it and the US didn’t. I mean they had the English version already done.
@@SegaLordX I traded Sonic R for it, In Ireland it was rare but I was crazy for fighting games back then and had to have it.
The Sega Saturn had a one of a kind gaming library.
That it did. So under appreciated by the masses.
I had Elevator Action Returns for the Saturn. I played that game with my brother multiple times, it was a lot of fun.
That game is super expensive nowadays, i also still have it. Do you still own it? If so keep it.
That cyber bots ost though.... loved that game. Great shows of conversions with these choices
Saw Mai Shiranui on the thumbnail and I'm like yeah, I'm watching this lol
Step 1: click thumbnail
Step 2: 👍
Step 3: settle in for great content
Yeeeeeeees, finally Elevator Action Returns get its debut. A seriously under appreciated game.
*Like crappy developers like Akklaim...*
That hurts Sega Lord....take it back. 😭
I loved my sega Saturn. I ended rebuying it from a used games store. It’s hard to find affordable games though.
Thats why u make your own at home.
I wish they’d do a Saturn mini console
Hopefully with time they will.
14:36 you forgot to mention the name of the game. It looks like the same IP as Armored Warriors, the Capcom beat em up.
Indeed I did. Sorry for that. It’s Cyberbots.
i love how this video has all the games id buy if i got a saturn
Thanks dude... Part 3 Final fight revenge, dark legend and Golden axe the duel.
The best retro game channel on youtube
Thanks to you I can really enjoy the Saturn library. I just got one with a Fenrir and a crt (I luckily found a free one).
Your videos help understanding the games mechanics, context, highlights obscur gems. I like your passion :)
An other guy, pandamonium, is doing great stuff too.
I was stunned by KOF 95 when I saw it in the arcade ...
Most buggy arcade fighter game of the 5th gen console era. Hopefully a hacker will fix the Saturn and ps1 ports one day.
I have Cyberbots, though through the Capcom arcade stadium. Real fun time
Love your stuff. My wife may not be a fan as watching your vids has driven me to repurchase a Saturn and games. All Japanese for cost purposes of course (plus I just had to have that black light gun vs orange). None the less, thanks for all you do. Again, I love your content!
I’m sorry your wife has been less enthusiastic about the channel but I do appreciate you watching!
@@SegaLordX haha, it's all good my friend. She gets it. Just one of those many opposites that makes her and I attract! 👍😁 Have a great evening and thank you again as always for your content!
definitely thinking of getting a hold of an import saturn there were some great arcade ports exclusive to Japan!
Nightstriker is my fav super scaler its just so much fun
Yup. One of my favorites as well. Love that soundtrack.
I'm a huge Mortal Kombat 2 fan and I was excited when I bought MK2 for
Sega Saturn in 1995 when I was 17!
Darius gaiden is one of my favoite shmup games of all times.
I like the Saturn port of Gradius II. It's the only one I know of which has continues making it much better than the arcade game.
Thanks for a video that makes my time in the hospital move a little faster
i love crypt killer. it might be a little ugly but to me was still fun. i love light gun games a ton and was just playing it a few days ago.
It’s a great 2 player game. It just looks terrible.
Cyberbots on saturn was so cool, Shin Mecha Goki
Great stuff from the Saturn. Wish I got the chance to play Night Strikers because that price is nuts.
I just really like the content of this channel. I love how professional and how entertaining all of your videos are. I really hope that you keep getting more subscribers. Much success to you!
I would like to see you do a video on some of the RPGs that were on the Sega consoles.
Just in case yall dont no, both this cyber bots and the side scroller beat em up is about 2dollars each on capcom arcade on steam and xbox, probs ps too. Brilliant
Elevator Action Returns is a must play
With regards to Fighting Vipers I think that it got the most important bit into the game which was the 3D fence without it the game wouldn't have felt like Fighting Vipers since the gameplay partially relies on it.
Virtua Fighter and Daytona USA were near one to one conversions on the Saturn as well! (Insert sarcasm here) 😆😭
Sega Lord x keeping the videos coming like a Canadian truck convoy. God bless.
No "Toasty!!" yelled in the Saturn version...sacrilege!!
Picked up Cyberbots a while ago through Sendico, even scored the book with it. Very cool game! I'd love to get Elevator Action as well but the prices even on import are insane!
Sendico isn’t definitely the way to go to get japanese Saturn games in great condition for a solid price. The shipping can sometimes be high on it though, nevertheless good pick up
Loved Virtual On, even own a physical copy on PC
I’ll have to check out some of these games.
There’s a part 1 with more games worth looking into.
Sega Lord X, you make the best content, dude.
Wow, thanks! Appreciate that.
You gotta talk about Sega Rally in Part 3!
And Die Hard Arcade!
Awesome video man! It's a shame a lot of these titles never made it stateside.
if saturn really happens on mister, it's going to be cray
I’d be shocked if it’s any good.
I made this game similar to astall kinda but he double jump and triple jump but I lost the game that computer got sold for drugs
Another great video. Awesome work man
Another Great Video, keep on Going Bro💙
Love the videos 😊 brings back memories
dang, flashing light warning for corpse killer
I added it at the start of the segment.
Awesome video,thanx a lot.
Great video...as always.
Saturn got a lot great arcade ports
It really did. More than most realized.
in our time at our age, those differences were irrelevant lmao :) but now that we older we can enjoy the tech hurdles
