Great video, John. One nitpick: front/rear speaker balance is adjustable in Supermodel using `-balance` or `Balance` in the config file (-100 to 100). The Model 3 has two SCSPs for generating sound, each producing different stereo outputs. In Daytona 2, one of the SCSPs drives the front speakers and the other the rear speakers. We mix these equally in Supermodel, which appears to drown out the rear speaker audio. But you can weight it more heavily toward the rear speakers to fix the problem.

It's been exciting to hear mentions of this "passion project from a single programmer who worked on the AM2 ports to Xbox 360/PS3 around 2010". I suppose the hope is that he keeps working on Like a Dragon ports as he has been since Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. EDIT: I've just been informed Iizawa was a programmer again on Virtua Fighter 3tb Online, and Hayakawa was one of the system programmers.
John's videos are amazing. I hope he keeps doing this stuff for a very long time. Having all this info so well documented is priceless and a fundamental part of preserving the legacy of these games.
I'm just in awe. What a passion project. Thank you to the programmer and his/her colleagues that made the Like a Dragon version possible. Does my heart good to see the classics shown such respect and love. Bravo, Sega Entertainment. Bravo.
I bet they would but the cost and convenience of arcade machines isn't very accessible. Also, Arcade emulation is good but it's also much less approachable to people from a setup standpoint.

Minor tip: in Daytona USA 1 arcade, you can make the developer credits show up by pressing start during the end sequence. (Daytona 3 does this by default during the credits)
Fantastic episode, John! You perfectly captured what made Model 3 games so special at the time. Sega is straight up leaving money on the table by not creating a 'Model 3 Collection' for PC and consoles. It's one of the few eras of retro gaming that is still marooned in the past.
John, I'm so glad you made this video. I share your enthusiasm for both Daytona and this period of arcade technology. This video answers so many of the questions I had around the emulation in Like a Dragon. Just hope this is a precursor to some standalone releases or collections of Model 3 games.
Digital Foundry - SEGA's Ryuga Gotaku team announced that Virtua FIghter 3tb will be included in the 8th Ryuga Gotaku/Yakuza game. Also, they are contemplating on releasing a Model 3 Arcade compilation but in order to receive it, we'll need to make *A LOT OF NOISE* for them to recognise that there is a demand for it in the west. The louder the noise for all model 3 games with ROLLBACK NETCODE, full multiplayer online, Crossplay, all model 3 games with ranking modes and so on, the higher the chance we'll get it. No noise, no get.
How do we make this noise though? Do they not see these videos? Are they not aware of Supermodel or how good it is now? What do they fucking want from us?! After all these years of people making content about how Sega need to port/rerelease/remaster/RESPECT the quality titles that not only made "Sega" such an exciting and innovative brand, but are also *literally keeping these titles and (to a certain extent) the name Sega alive*, Sega continue to piss around with the stuff that their longstanding fans actually want. Unless they start properly updating these IP's, there's only so long that these titles will be valid for. Nintendo generally respectfully curate their stuff as time goes by...but by mostly focussing on Sonic, etc and ignoring their legendary 3D arcade titles, Sega are heading into Atari territory. Daytona 2 is without a doubt one of the greatest arcade racers ever made, but I'm not fucking buying an unrelated full price game because there's an *emulated, offline, 4:3, inferior version with fewer options and concessions to modern sensibilities of a game that i can play 4P splitscreen on my mid-range PC* that's available as as a fucking minigame plonked within it. All in the hope that they'll maybe, possibly, release something that i can actually give them some money for..? They've not even released VF5:US on PC *or even PS5! - it's PS4 back-compat!* Or the 360/PS3 version of Daytona 1/SRC on PC! Or Switch Virtua Racing on...anything else! Or not farm out Daytona Championship to a team that, for whatever reason, could only reverse engineer Sega Racing Classic and release it with nice graphics but no 4-way shifter! Or...Or..! Sorry for the rant EAprima, this isn't really aimed at you and i love that John/DF have made this video, but Sega need to get a goddamn grip with this shit. My entire life i've watched them fart out wanky arcade conversions or make bizarre and disappointing release decisions - but making *the first and only home port of DAYTONA USA FUCKING 2, something i've been waiting more than 20 years for, a game-within-a-game* has finally tipped me over the (battle on the) edge. Dickheads. (Not you EAprima, sorry😢 )
@@TK1s_Big_LoveWELL SAID! Don't worry, I know you are not ranting at me and, trust me wholeheartedly when I say this, but everything you said... everything, I screamed it all at SEGA directly nearly 20 years ago! Yes. I shouted and screamed at SEGA's management. Quite simply, SEGA doesn't want to make easy money. So don't worry, I felt and understood every malice sentence you typed, and I whole heartedly agree with you. Unfortunately, many of the people at SEGA are new and, once again, don't see beyond their office window and from their locale spaces. They only know Japan and Japan alone... They think they know the west but they don't know squat, and tons of them don't take the right initiative to learn the west properly so they can prevent themselves from making low-hanging fruit executions that resulted in botch and/weak conversations. Oh yes. That supermodel version. Sorry, that version is DEFINITELY better than Sega's effort. Nothing beats playing Daytona USA 2 at 4K, wide screen, everything glossed up using the very latest supermodel emulate and with NETWORK PLAY OF UP TO 16 PLAYERS!!! OH yes, SHAME ON SEGA FOR NOT REACHING OUT TO THE SUPERMODEL TEAM. I know the guy that created the emu and he said he would have been DELIGHTED to help Sega get the code up and running so it can be used for anything they want. All the Supermodel team wanted more than anything was to have the Model 3 board games running perfectly on anything and everything, and they much rather have SEGA release the games than for people to go the high seas. Unfortunately, SEGA didn't do that. If they did do it, we could have had Sega Rally 2, Scud Race and Daytona 2 around 5 years ago because those three games especially were the closest to perfection.
YES YES YES, Great Video I remember jumping from killer instinct to Daytona2 in the arcades in 1996 alongside other games, but these where the hot ones for years. The games where so complete in the arcade and then you go home and start up the genisis or snes an say the arcades games look so much better....then you and you're buddies started planning the next day of quarters at the arcade....I miss those days. I really feel bad for any gamer that never experienced the arcades in the 90s .Great Video D1X
Not only did the game have a mind blowing graphics for the time, remember the machines also had strong force feedback which really contributed to the experience.
Fun fact: Sega worked with Lockheed Martin to produce their 90's arcade games, and I believe they co-developed Model 3. I vividly remember seeing Virtua fighter 3 the first time in an arcade in 1998. It was mind blowing. I thought maybe it was like Killer instinct, as in the backgrounds or characters were FMV. Nothing else I'd seen looked like that, even 2 years later. It's a crime Sega seems to ignore releasing more of their arcade games officially. They do throw us a bone once in a while, but it's not enough. But I guess you can say that about most arcade only games.
Awesome video! Daytona 2 and the Model3 board was so far ahead of its time. The games still look great today. I’d love to have a collection of these on home consoles today. I built my own racing cab for mainly arcade racing games like this. A version of these games that could emulate linked cabinets for online play would be great. If Sega and Namco could just release some of these classics, it would be awesome! Thanks again for taking the time to put together this video!
I wrote the rendering engine for the supermodel emulator. Ask anything :) The reason that the like a dragon gaiden emulation is too bright is because the lighting is clamped. In daytona they used an unclamped model which on the back faces will actually subtract from the ambient lighting. Since supermodel is open source .. I do wonder how much 'inspiration' they took when writing their own emulator. In supermodel if you create a custom 57.5hz resolution, supermodel will use this and work at the correct original frame rate, judder free. You don't even need a special screen to do this, it works on my nothing special 1080p asus display.
I m 40 year old . When i was a young man the model 3 makes me dreaming. When i used your emulator for the first Time for playing Daytona 2 i had tears . It was a child gamer dream come to reality. Daytona 2 in my home.. just i Say before not enough word for saying thx you!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
I've read several comments on TH-cam, saying that (most of, minus the intro theme) the Mitsuyoshi songs are apparently still there, and you enable them by holding start at the "Gentlemen, Start Your Engines" screen.
Man, Model 3 surely is my favorite leap in gaming technology. Having the PS1, Saturn and the Fog64 at home, entering a game center with Virtua Fighter 3 and Scud Race really felt like entering the future. Because of the Model 3, I never was as hyped for a new console release than I was for the Dreamcast. Now if only they could release Scud Race (which stays for me as the best racing game ever made). Oh yeah and Le Mans 24 which many seems to forget.
While watching the SRC2 footage I just kept think about how great the sense of speed is. I had figured part of it was a nice FOV but the speed lines created by their texturing technique was not was I expected, that's very impressive. I now wish these kind of textures were in every racing game.
Never liked a video this fast. I love this era of gaming too, I got to see Scud Race back then and was blown away. I hope they'll port it too, and if they make a simple compilation of the games and throw it on Steam I would instantly buy them
Thanks for this! My neurodivergence always makes me itch when I try to imagine what we missed in North America or home ports. Episodes like this one make me feel like the skies will always be blue ❤
Downloaded this Like a Dragon game from Game Pass at launch and grinded the initial hour just to find this arcade center to play Daytona 2. Made a save file there so I can comeback anytime 😊
Amazing video! Hope one day we get a Daytona USA collection. Including the remaster version of Daytona 1, a similar version of 2 and a home console version of championship

Was waiting for a video on daytona usa 2/model 3. the love I have for daytona usa 2 is huge and even playing it now is mind blowing sega knocked it out of the park with the model 3.
Them satisfying jiggle and vibration animations that accentuate gravity, air, and speed. Never understood why more games, even today, don't do better on this
Sega really needs to package together a complete collection of Model 2 games, and Model 3 games. People will pay good money for rock-solid 100% console releases of these legendary games! We want ALL the Virtua Fighters, ALL the Virtua Racing, ALL the Daytona’s, ALL the Fighting Vipers, ALL the Virtual ON… I’m sure I’m forgetting some, but these games need to be preserved for posterity with hardcore 4K 60fps PC AND console releases on BOTH Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. (Who knows which one of those two will continue backwards compatibility going forward.) Come on, Sega. TAKE OUR MONEY!
I've been waiting so long for a proper Daytona USA 2 it seemed like it would never happen. I really hope Sega release a proper Model 2/3 collection, as 24 hrs is one of my favourites. I was always playing that in Sega world. Daytona 2 and 24hr were some of the few games I could play and win 1st in the arcades. Great memories!
I don’t remember the actual cost because I played it at Gameworks in Vegas. I remember mom gave me 20 bucks to load up the card and it was wiped out before I knew it.
What a treat of a video on a cool Saturday morning!! Thanks John! I guess it's time to buy Like a Dragon. AND...COME ON SEGA...bring us ALL your old back catalog!
So these games are all inside this new Like a Dragon game? If Sega can include here, then surely a standalone release is also doable - seems like a no brainer to do a separate compilation of these emulated titles!
Awesome video, there was nothing like walking into a 90's arcade as a new racing game was released. Although in the early comparisons, missing Ridge Racer and Rave Racer out was a misstep personally, probably the closest competition Sega had imo.
Wow, you took me back hard! I was so excited to play these games and was wondering when I was going to get these graphics on Dreamcast or console...Sadly was never the same but a close port in the later years.. Super Gt Arcade was sexy. Thanks for the Video
I also was shocked sega added this as a playable game in the newest like a dragon game… was such an awesome moment stumbling into an arcade and realised I could play Daytona 2 at last!
I was waiting for this video to come out! I really liked the filtering they added to visuals - gives it that grainy arcade look. I really do wish there were some audio options though as I would like to hear the engine sounds a bit more.
I get the feeling Sega never officially released Daytona 3 on console because they just want it to stay an arcade game. RawThrills is apparently very protective about home ports, too, which is why we never got a version of H2Overdrive. I suspect some guys in the coin-op biz view the home console market as fatal to their bottom line.
I remember seeing these at the arcade for the first time, it was unreal. It wasn't until the Dreamcast that anything came near to the graphical quality and fluidity of these arcade games. Everyone would crowd around them to watch people play.
Played Daytona on those slot machines in the mid 90s as a kid. Remember that the graphics and smoothness was waaaaay above anything else at the time. It wasnt until maybe PS2 before we got something that could compare.
Wonderful video John. Love your work, and DF because of it. I remember as a kid/teen seeing Daytona 2, but more so Scud Race, in the arcades and just being floored. Definitely a next gen experience, and you only have so many of those. Top of those for me would be first time running a Voodoo 2 on my Mac, first game being Unreal 1, and that castle flyby. Your videos provide me with a great connection to those past games, and moments in life. Call it nostalgia but it also serves to broaden our understanding of then and now. Really enjoyable content, thank you for your service
Man I bought a Saturn for Daytona and virtua fighter 2 back in the day, but I've never even played Daytona 2. Such a shame things couldn't have went better for sega. I saw scud race in the arcade a bunch of times, and that blew me away.
I get slightly upset when I see kids throw dirt at SEGA. They literally have no idea how important they are and have been for all of us who love video games. Thanks for this awesome video John 👍🏼
I love that you've made this video, John. Realistically no need for it, but it's without a doubt what so many Daytona fans are curious to hear. Your passion for this era of Sega, but also crucially your eye for the technicalities, make you a continuation of the classic CVG/MMS/SSM lineage as far as i'm concerned. Nice one!
I hope they create a perfect emulated version of Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2. That game had the same chasis rattle when the car is traveling fast. Great Dreamcast game. Whatever happened to Genki?

I suppose the hope is that he keeps working on Like a Dragon ports as he has been since Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.
EDIT: I've just been informed Iizawa was a programmer again on Virtua Fighter 3tb Online, and Hayakawa was one of the system programmers.
The Daytona DF Retro reintroduced me to one of my favorite game soundtracks of all time, so I'm happy to see coverage on the sequel!

John's retro gaming videos are the best content on Digital Foundry.

100% Agree
Can we talk about how much of a treasure this man is? Another fantastic retro gaming video. Best in the biz!
Ive said it once and i'll say it again. There NEEDS to be a collection of Sega arcade racing games released. Just hook it to my veins!!!
I love these DF Retro videos. They really showcase these retro games, and can help to increase the viewer's understanding and appreciation of them.
Just don't dare play hogwarts legacy or john will call you a transphobe!!

John's videos are amazing. I hope he keeps doing this stuff for a very long time.
Having all this info so well documented is priceless and a fundamental part of preserving the legacy of these games.
John, I really LOVE the DF Retro stuff. Please keeping being awesome. Your work is appreciated more than you will ever truly know. :)
I'm just in awe. What a passion project. Thank you to the programmer and his/her colleagues that made the Like a Dragon version possible. Does my heart good to see the classics shown such respect and love. Bravo, Sega Entertainment. Bravo.
This is such an awesome video. I would love to see more videos based around arcades and just more DF Retro in general.
Man the technical detail on these DF Retro videos is outstanding. So much nostalgia. Hats off to John and everyone at DF involved in this series.
You can tell immediately that this is a real labor of love, kudos John! Possibly my all time favourite df retro vid...outstanding 💪
What a time to be alive, then and now!
Lovely treat to be having my Saturday evening dinner watching a half hour. John linneman spectacular.
Thank you
Just what I expected from John covering Model 3 games. High quality content, extreme atention to detail and very insightfull.
Congrats!
Thanks so much for your work in preserving these games!

Said it before and Ill say it again:
DF is essentially the John Linneman show. He's the best
I've read several comments on TH-cam, saying that (most of, minus the intro theme) the Mitsuyoshi songs are apparently still there, and you enable them by holding start at the "Gentlemen, Start Your Engines" screen.
I've tried on PS4, and it didn't work for me.
Man, I remember how amazed I was the first time I saw Scud Race! The graphics were so good!
Le Mans 24 was amazing. I played the hell out of that game.
While watching the SRC2 footage I just kept think about how great the sense of speed is. I had figured part of it was a nice FOV but the speed lines created by their texturing technique was not was I expected, that's very impressive.
I now wish these kind of textures were in every racing game.
Miss playing this game back in the arcades. A lost era for sure. Thanks for the video.
What a great time for gaming, when the arcade was always the best version to play. Respect for covering this DF.
Yesssss thank you for this, the context for the era is sooooo important in appreciating the skills of AM2. Truly incredible geniuses 🥰
Amazing video! Hope one day we get a Daytona USA collection. Including the remaster version of Daytona 1, a similar version of 2 and a home console version of championship
Truly a shame 90's Arcade Racer (later renamed 90's Super GP) was never published by Nicalis
YES THIS!!!!!!!!!!!
Tremendous episode! Always fascinated by the Model 3 and this era of gaming in the mid to late 90s. Soo much can be discussed...I'll just leave it at, Thanks for this episode. 👍
Excellent video John, thank you so much for your hard work. I miss SEGA and it's magic, still can't get over that they had to abandon hardware manufacturing. It is fantastic that Daytona USA 2 can finally be experienced at home on a console. My PS5 is gonna be happy.
Is it out?
it' a Great idea John ,It would be fantastic a stand alone collection likes sega ages and full compatibility with actual steering wheels,
with option to upscale to native 4k 16/9 and other feature likes scanlines...never stop dreaming! As always superb work of passion John!!!
Great video! Can't wait for the Virtua Fighter 3tb and Spikeout comparisons when Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth comes out. Keep up the good work John, you are a legend.
We REALLY need Model 2/Model 3 Arcade Collections!
AM 2 .. was a magic studio. Daytona feeling is unique . I love this game so much !!
I play it this morning in endurance mode. God i want to buy a fanatec wheel for this!!!
I have a fanatec wheel, do you know if the game is compatible?
@@lorenzobelli4840 i don t really know but i think it ok
Yes 🙌 thank you DF been yearning more of these kind of videos
I've been waiting so long for a proper Daytona USA 2 it seemed like it would never happen. I really hope Sega release a proper Model 2/3 collection, as 24 hrs is one of my favourites. I was always playing that in Sega world. Daytona 2 and 24hr were some of the few games I could play and win 1st in the arcades. Great memories!
Digital Foundry (Retro) needs to do a 5-hour long video of the Dreamcast.
Period.
YES!
You know this was a heck of a lot more than a quarter to play in the arcade.
Sega super gt (Scud Racer) was a dollar at my arcade. I only played it twice in my youth.
I cracked up each time he said drop “a” quarter in.
Yea man, more like drop a dollar where I lived N.Y.C
All the model 3 games were a dollar. They cost 20K USD in the 90s.
A wonderful video! Thank you! I can't believe we are just now seeing model 3 on console.
When Switch got Virtua Racing and G-LOC, I thought for sure Daytona and Sega Super GT (SCUD Race) would come at some point.
I keep hoping they do.
Recently played this game in one of the Sega arcade buildings (now called GiGO) in Akihabara, Tokyo. Such a great experience!
Thanks for this , always love a look at the model 3 and that era in general was very special
More DF Retro Videos are truly needed John. thank you for this awesome video!
Wow, you took me back hard! I was so excited to play these games and was wondering when I was going to get these graphics on Dreamcast or console...Sadly was never the same but a close port in the later years.. Super Gt Arcade was sexy. Thanks for the Video
I think I could watch John talk about AM2 games for the rest of time.
I f**king love SEGA man. And this era of SEGA has so much nostalgia for me.
Model 2 and Model 3 especially.
Amazing recap of everything Model 3, John, thank you!
Nobody makes videos like John. Incredible!
Dreamcast (1998) was vastly superior to Model 2 arcade board.
Dude looked at Soul Calibur and demanded way more straight lines.
Great video! I'm hoping Daytona 2 will find it's way to the Switch (Virtua Racing is awesome on it)
It's crazy how Daytona USA 3 is just straight up a PC game and SEGA doesn't just throw it on Steam to charge like 15 dollars for it.
One day hopefully!
Phenomenal job as usual John. Someone send a dev from Sega a link to this vid ASAP.
It's time for Sega to revive the Ages 2500 series. I need Sega Ages 2500 Vol 34: Daytona USA Complete Collection yesterday!
I have so many good memories from Daytona USA in the ’90 on PC!
Man I bought a Saturn for Daytona and virtua fighter 2 back in the day, but I've never even played Daytona 2. Such a shame things couldn't have went better for sega. I saw scud race in the arcade a bunch of times, and that blew me away.
Took Sega long enough to make a model 3 emulator! Daytona 3 should get a home port!
I get slightly upset when I see kids throw dirt at SEGA. They literally have no idea how important they are and have been for all of us who love video games.
Thanks for this awesome video John 👍🏼
The sega of now is nothing compared to the sega of before
I love that you've made this video, John. Realistically no need for it, but it's without a doubt what so many Daytona fans are curious to hear. Your passion for this era of Sega, but also crucially your eye for the technicalities, make you a continuation of the classic CVG/MMS/SSM lineage as far as i'm concerned. Nice one!
There was something strangely emotional about that outro. This era of arcade games is always such a fascinating one.
Playing Daytona in the arcades can never be replicated. I need that steering wheel that can be hammered
I hope they create a perfect emulated version of Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2. That game had the same chasis rattle when the car is traveling fast. Great Dreamcast game. Whatever happened to Genki?
