Two and a half years ago, during my first visit in India, I spent 2 days walking all around the slums of Mumbai. Even though I got to learn quite a bit about the life in the slums, I didn’t have the chance to live inside the slums and because of that I left with more questions than answers.
So now that I came back to India for the second time, I decided to go back to Mumbai and spend five days living in Dharavi, which is one of the largest slums in the world.
This experience opened my eyes in ways I couldn’t have imagined, because I got to spend so much time with the local people, who completely transformed my outlook on what their lives were like.
You see, as most outsiders, I had a very distorted view of the people of the slums. We grow up hearing stories about them dying on the streets, no one being able to read and write, kids having to sleep surrounded by flesh-eating rats and so on.
There are, of course, tons of problems that need to be addressed, especially when it comes to sanitation. For example, sources say that in Dharavi there is an average of 1 toilet for a thousand people. Also, livestock generally lives in the same quarters with people and that, combined with the fact that the local water sources lack cleaning facilities, sometimes causes the spread of contagious diseases.
However, people there are just like everywhere else. They have their own dreams, goals, careers, thoughts and emotions. They are in no way different from the rest of us.
It doesn’t matter where we come from. We are all equal. Some of us are born with golden spoons in our mouths, others are not. But that doesn’t define us. What defines us is our pursuit of happiness, our compassion for others and our ability to adapt to whatever circumstances we’re in and make the best of them.

I’ve followed you for awhile, and I’ve liked many of your vids. This vid, however, is so contrived. You spent around 8 days total in the slums, which means you got to go home. But incidentally, you claim from this meager sip of destitution, you have gorged yourself on the plight of the slum dogs. No. Not even close.

That's the miracle of India : you can survive this country/culture, only if your brain and heart are able to "mingle in" and share the life and emotions of the locals. I've not visited Dharavi, but I've visited (on my own) many local areas of big cities like Delhi or Kolkatta, and life is pretty much similar to that of Dharavi's, and you can experience for yourself the very gentle and welcoming hearts of most indians; You'll also feel, surprinsingly perhaps, much less threatened or in any danger, in areas that are not touristic, than in any touristic parts of indian cities, where touts and abusers make a living out of the naiveté of most foreigners. Here, they would not dream of robbing a fellow human being, even a "richer one".
India is definitely a mind changing experience, even if you don't reach the slums.

I, too, am a positive American who tries tirelessly to think well of others, especially those I do not know well. I have always wanted to visit India and find the culture and its people beautiful, I always have. I love Indian food, clothing, spirituality, it is all gorgeous. Yet when I peruse videos or read novels, much is said about how dirty it is. I am very glad to see this video posted here, as it feels what I know to be true: people are the same everywhere, and there is good and bad to any living situation. Please remember, my Indian brothers and sisters, that not all foreigners are against you nor think ill of you. At different times in my life, I've been homeless and addicted to drugs. I've been in abusive relationships. I've learned to be grateful for everything. I don't even have a shower curtain right now but I'm grateful I have a shower! Just count your blessings that you weren't born/thrown into a life like these people have to live.

From watching this video, I’ve learnt that if you ignore the hygiene, the slums aren’t as terrible as I thought. Of course, disease remains the biggest fear.

I want to share to the one who will read this , I have also lived for 10 days to celebrate diwali with one of my aunt in Dharavi slum . From my personal experience the people living there are very kind , caring, lovely and hard working as shown in this video ,even my as is a aunt tailor . And I have learnt many things such as adjustment , always be happy , the importance of time and not to be lazy . I myself live in Pune in a building around my house there are many big buildings, shops, small malls and many things , where I could never get these experiences and learnings

I was thinking the same thing. These people look much happier than most Americans and I don't buy the "sadness hiding behind those smiling faces". I would imagine there are generations of people there who only know that way of life and many probably haven't ever been too far from those slums. When you're used to having nothing, anything more than that will make you happy. It is the mind that makes you healthy or sick, unhappy or happy, rich or poor.

I worked in Mumbai for two years and I had to pass through Dharavi on my way to the storage yard in Wadala. We drove on those very streets you show in the video. This was around ten years ago. One day I visited my boss in his apartment up at Powia Lake . His place was a million dollar apparent and right across the road was another one of Mumbai's slums. It is a city of extreme rich and poor people

Amazing Video. As someone who has visited these Slums and India in general, it is important to remember we are all just humans with unfair advantages. This video showed me that the locals don't seem to take anything for granted, yet so many of us living in 'privileged' countries and homes do. I think we should all open our eyes a little more and count our blessings. Ultimately, we are all equal as we are faced with the same possiblities. I believe each and every person in that video has a dream, which I hope they all achieve.
Okay being an Indian, seeing this man here living in the slums and having a lot of compassion and respect for it's dwellers, realising that we are all one and the same, i could tell you that I'd get married to this man any time of they day! the thing is.. there are govt sanctioned flats for those who live in slums.. however most of these flats are gifted to politicians and builders..the few which are left are provided for the poor.. and what they do ? they just rent out the flat provided for basic income ans build another hut for their self. It's sad but it's the Truth. and this is why "No one can stop the slums"

I was visiting my aunt in the slum of jakarta then i realized how lucky i am to live in a village. :') i was so.. u know it, i can't evem describe it.
But salute to this guy, he did his best to respect and shows his politeness.

Its when I watch these kind of videos that I actually appreciate all the little things In my life that I take for granted everyday!
When I lived in Mumbai, around 5 years ago, the city council had installed millions of rubbish bins in the city. The bins were nicely installed in pairs, one for food waste and other for recyclable waste. I was really happy to see how government was taking cleanliness initiatives. But guys, within a month or so, almost all the bins were either broken or stolen. At around the same time the city council had even replaced the old lamp post kind of bus stops with really nice ones that had benches and roof. I kid you not, I read in the newspapers that these bus stops at some places were stolen. And these bus stops were heavy stainless steel structures fixed into the ground. And let me tell you, people who do such things are the ones who actually curse the government the most for not doing anything. Government even makes toilets, but people break the doors and commodes and make these toilets totally unusable. Later they convert these toilets into small shops and rent them out to make money. Isn’t it funny? But that’s the reality..!

I also visited Mumbai and tried to be among the locals, walked along the tiny streets crowded with people of all types. What amazed me was the joy and carefree attitude of most of them . They are hard workers busy in their usual chores. I left Mumbai last week full of admiration and respect for them.I love Mumbai and its people.

A UK tv channel once raised money to build proper housing for the ppl of the slums & filmed them all moving in & settling down. However, when they went back to check in them, they found that they ruined everything - leaving litter everywhere, not looking after the place, shitting on the floors etc..... The documentary concluded that the ppl just don't know how to live in nice places & that there was no point in helping them further as it was futile. Education was much needed for the slum dwellers to appreciate & respect their own homes & neighbourhoods.

I lived a normal life and then suddenly my life started to change dramatically. I allways thinked GOD must be but i doubted sometimes. Everything started when i went to one school to study. There was somebody from Russia and we started to go lifting weights and do many things together. . Everything went allright until i was trying to lift about 308 pounds. I heard first a little sound and then very large sound. I thought my hand was broken. Then i went to the hospital and they told me take two weeks break and start again. I told to them its not okay but they didnt listen me. Then i went to health centre. They agreed that it was broken. So i asked them do i have a surgery. They told me it depends what profession i have. I had feeling that its not gonna work so i went to the private hospital. I went there and then magnetic photos. I had an chest rupture and doctor told me he do surgery after two weeks. I waited and finally i went there and he tested my strength. He told me i have so much power so theres no need to do that surgery. I was confused and i told him why not but he told me he have done this about thirty years. Then i started to swim first and i felt unpleasant feeling there. I try to lift weights but there was no power and it felt bad too. After about two months i had enough. I called to the very good hospital on southern Finland. I came there and doctor was confused and told me why they didnt do that surgery. He told me im very badly late and because chest muscle tendon have been so long time broken they have to take
transplantation of the Achilles tendon. That was because muscle have been so long time too far away. But then doctor tryed that and told they dont need that transplant because the chest muscle tendon was not all broken. The surgery went very well and i started quickly training again. I only trained very short time until i started to feel something on the groin. I stopped the training and i went back to my home. I started to feel very unpleasand feelings on my groin area and i had to pee all the time. If i drinked the water it came out very quickly. finally i felt so bad so i went to healt center. They told me that i have a prostata problem. I was so confused why me. After few days i went to hospital because i felt so bad and peeing was so much harder. Those hours in the hospital were so long. Finally i met the doctor and i was very disappointed because they didnt do nothing. I went there so many times and finally i went to private hospital because my mothers sister is a nurse and know that doctor. He checked me and that was normal. He told i dont have prostata problem but nerve problems. He told me to go now normal hospital to find out what is problem. But didnt let me in. They just told that man is only a basic doctor not urologist.He was one of the best surgeons in our city so that was very rude. My brother went very angry and told we go to our capital city Helsinki to top urologist. We just wanted to have evidence what would open the hospitals rooms. He told mee too that prostata have normal size and no infection. Then we went back to our town but they still dint want to do nothing. I started to feel my back is the problem. I wanted the magnetic photos but they told no. So i had to go private hospital to take those photos. There was nothing really bad there. Then i started to go very down because i had that strong peeing feeling all the time. The only thing where i could escape was sleeping. Some days i slept twenty hours because there i had peace. It was very hard to sleep that long. Then my brother found an doctor how told si joint dysfunction. A little bit time after that we found a man how knew what problem i had. He told me on the phone that the reason for this was the loose ligament. I immediately realized that he knew something the doctors didn't know. I went there and he told me:
He examined the area of my back and said that the ligament has moved. The one that goes over that si joint. It keeps it in the right position. He could push it back into place. He said that in the beginning it often leaves out of place. But eventually it starts to stay. All I needed to do was walk up the stairs and it became loose. It went out of place because it had been off the right place a long time. Finally I had to move to my Father and My Mother because they had no stairs. It took about 10 weeks time when it finally started to stayon right place. My scoliosis went away and my back started to heal slowly. Awful feelings were smaller but still bad because i had lots of pressure in my lower back. The tight muscles weighed on the nerves and i had urination problems. It was awful living because i couldnt relax. Allways had the feeling i have to pee. I was so sad and frustrated and i started to hate everything. I stayed at my home and i didnt wanted and couldnt go anywhere. I told everybody all the time i want to die and nobody couldnt understand how terrible life i have. After long five years we got new information. I had an hypothyroidism. We didn't go to the doctor because I couldn't get anywhere. My brother ordered a supplement containing this hormone. It was the only hormone preparation I received without the doctor's permission. We waited about 2-3 weeks and i started to get very angry. I said that I am willing to risk my life to be healed. Finally i got that supplement and i started to use it. After about two days i started to feel something is happening there. I felt clicks on my back and i was so happy. Finally the unpleasant feelings started to get away slowly. I was so happy and i thinked im getting now my life back. But after three weeks suddenly after the sauna i started to feel very bad. My legs felt very heavy and my heart was beating so fast. Finally i felt im gonna die and we went to meet a doctor. I had an high blood pressure and my heart was beating 120-150 times in one minute. The doctor gave me beta blocker. My pulse went down about 65-85 in one minute. I felt better but i started to lost my stamina very quickly. And i also started to lost my sleeping time very quickly. Finally sitting on the sofa was hard. Then one night we went to drive a car with my brother becsuse i had better feeling. Then suddenly the human looking man what i met 2010 called me. He said he saw us in the roundabout.

When he came in i heard a sound too. And that leaf rake was an another place. I was scared and my health started to go really bad. Finally i was not able to sleep and i was so tired and sick. I urinated at least six liters a day. My weight also fell fast. I told anybody im gonna die very soon and i want to go hospital. I was still not admitted to the hospital. I called to Sweden is it possible to go there? But they said it wouldn't work because I'm not Swedish. Suddenly a thought came to my mind: I had never read the Bible but But I began to wonder if I had broken the Sin of the Holy Spirit. I started to investigate and became seriously fooled. Then I was really terrified. Then I remembered that I was willing to risk my life to regain my health. Then I got pressure that because of that God rejected me. And also because I had threatened to kill myself for years. And also because I had been angry with my family. Then I started thinking about suicide. At first I tried to jump off the balcony but couldn't. Then one day I walked to the icy river. The water was awfully cold but I walked there. I lay under the water and wondered if I was going under the ice. Then suddenly my brother came. He told me that my body weighed like a ton. He couldn't move me. Finally when I said I don't want to die my body lightened up. I walked home with him. I was in the warm shower for half an hour. Then I got the pressure that I was stupid when I didn't kill myself. Then I got the pressure that my judgment in hell is increasing all the time because God is so angry.
Then I tried to jump off the balcony but my mom caught me. God gave my mother extra strength.
I ran fast for 6-8 meters and my old mother got there at the same time. And she could hold on to me when I was hanging. My mother was 74 years old at the time. After that my brother and my mother pulled me back. I was terribly angry with them and said that because of you my judgment in hell would only increase. Then they started asking me. After they had brainwashed me: They wanted to show that they were already waiting!!!!!!!!! Those monsters are the master liars!!!!!!!!! Then I dreamed one night when I was told I would get the worst judgment in hell ever. Adolf Hitler and Stalin had received nothing compared to me. those monsters said judgment was increasing all the time. Every time I was angry to God, I got more. After all, my judgment was: It was like an infinite amount of energy burning me. I saw myself burning: dry sheet. I was just lying on the bed and i coulnt cry because: No tears in my eyes. those monsters had mixed everything in my body. that one monster raped me when i was sleeping. Then I finally started fighting back. I started thinking: Have I really been such a horrible person: So I deserve such a terrible end. Then I remember that my mother almost died in surgery. It happened when I was a little boy. Before the surgery, he saw the angel asking if he was ready. My mother told no and almost died. Then I thought if my mother could contact heaven. I told him to ask if Jesus or an angel could appear: If I haven't committed that sin. First my Mother saw one angel vision and after that three visions of LOVING JESUS. My health came back after two three days.
