  • MS 400 head to head comparison with the MS462. I really love both saws. 462 of course is the clear winner for power. Cut times at the end of video.

    Both the 400 and 462 are amazing pieces of modern day technology with unmatched power to weight ratios but all I'm going to need to run is a 20" bar. I already have a ms261c with an 18" bar .325 chain it rips!! I know the 462 will be overkill for a 20 inch bar but it will allow me to use a bigger bar if I ever need/want to upgrade

      I own a 261c and run a 16" bar and it screams. Also have a MS462c with a 20" bar and 25" light bar. I absolutely love this saw with the 25 " bar. As Billy Ray says, "Stand Up and Buck".

    I have both saws. Generally I use the 462 for felling and the 400 for limbing and bucking.

      I have since put a 25” on the 400 and use it all the time at work but if I was to buy another saw it would be the 462 just because there is little difference in price and a good bit of difference in power. Both are GREAT saws.

    I run a 400 w a 25” light bar and a full comp. Also have a WCS bark box and an air system. Before the extras it was sometimes bogged down but it’s a perfect “everything saw” now. I have back issues and needed as light weight of a saw as possible while felling all day (kills after about 4-6 hours for me and that’s when a few pounds makes a HUGE difference). Great so far but just a few months into this setup. Great video! Nice work 👍🏻

      Yes I agree few mods and they really run great, I always grab the lightest saw I can as well with my back being toast too😂 I run a 25” on mine as well. It’s been perfect so far no issues. Thanks for watching and the kind words

      @@satched wow, I have never heard of this happening to anyone!! I use mine daily but it doesn’t actually run for 8hrs. I have had mine for close to two years haven’t had any issues. What saws do you run that last?

      @chrisp556 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@timberandtools you wont go wrong with the 462. I love mine, it's a beast with a 25 or 28 inch bar. Look in your owners manual at the bar oil adjustment section. There is a little pin that you can tap in and turn the oiler into a high out put oiler. Off the shelf you're only getting 3/4 bar oil out put and the pin needs tapping in to get full range of adjustment. There's a couple video's showing how to do it also. Human has a video on the 661 and its the same for the 462.

    Had a ms441c for the lb ast ten years as my big firewood saw. It was in my basement when we had a recent flood. I had it on a workbench and couldnt tell if it had gotten wet,but i tried to start it and its not gettin any fire now. The air filter was dry and seemed fine,so if it did get wet it wasnt much. I dont know with all the electronics on them now a days.

      Use a spark tester and if it has spark compression test her. If they both pass try some gas or wd 40 to spray in carb if it fires needs carb/mtronic solenoid

    • @ciphercode2298
      @ciphercode2298 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timberandtools I'd say its gonna be the solenoid. It ran fine about a week before. I dont think anything got in the cylinder, but I'll pull the plug and double check. It had 148psi of compression back in the fall,but if it's got fire I'll test it again. Wish me luck

    Maybe the MS400 just has to be broke in because it certainly has potential. It has 5.4HP and only weighs 12.8lb, no other saw can touch that right now or come close to having that much power under 13 lbs that's incredible!! It might not have the torque of the 462 but for medium logs the MS400 is going to outperform just about any saw on the market. $800+ tax still puts it in the pro saw line up, quality isn't cheap

    • @timberandtools
      @timberandtools  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. The 400 is an awesome saw mine was 929$ I’m running a 25” on it now. It is so close in price to the 462 I’ll buy another 462 but I’m running a tree service so power means a lot. I like the 400 and thinks it’s a great saw!

    I'd love to see this done with a 400c that has a bark box on it. I think the straight shot is a bit too open for these smaller saws. The 462/572 are about as small a saw as what the straight shot will give gains.

    • @timberandtools
      @timberandtools  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is just a 28” Stihl bar and chain 91 drive link chain I believe. 3/8 .50 gauge chain. I do think it’ll struggle to oil really well but I think it’ll do it. If you get a 400 ported I’d say it’ll pull all day long a 28” bar!!

      Since the video I really have grown fond of the 400. I run a 25 on it and like it a lot. Given the choice tho I’d buy the 462 over the 400 just because I’m running a tree service and the 462 is a more capable saw however, the 400 is a sweet rig

  • @stihl9968
    @stihl9968 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Good job, but the 28" bar way too much for the 400 you know that and the video reflected it. You are asking for premature clutch wear and over heating issues.

    • @timberandtools
      @timberandtools  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes I know it's to much but there are saws that size that run a 28" wanted to see how it would perform. The echo 620p handles a 27" bar just fine. I personally will not buy another 400 the 462 is not much more and I definitely think that it is a lot more saw for just a little bit more money.

      @@timberandtools I agree the 400 seems weak and over hyped. It was going to be my first Stihl I purchased as I am a Husqvarna fan owning the 550XP Mark II, 572XP, 395XP and the T540iXP which is impressive for a battery saw. I also own Echo saws (cs2511t, cs355t, cs501p) including the CS620PW with the 27” bar that it pulls with ease. I should have bought the Stihl 462 instead of my 572XP but now I can’t justify it. I also have a Makita EA7900PRZ1 which is another overhyped saw. Thanks for the video.
