- Today we try out the Stihl MS 400 Chainsaw with a Magnesium Cylinder. This is a Pro Series Saw that appears to be a great fit for the pros and serious firewood guys as well. We also check on the pond situation and talk about daughter Eva's drivers test.

We live in Western Pa. and Have around 100 Acres of Land, About 1/2 is ours the rest is my moms, We have 4 kids and one grandchild, 3 Golden Retrievers and one Cat. We enjoy working on our property and making improvements. We sell firewood and soon will be selling hardwood lumber.
Eva's spirit is a testament to her parents. She's a charm.

This is truly an amazing saw. The weight difference matters alot, especially if you are out for several hours cutting. I wish someone had told me how big a deal that is. This 400 is just shy of the 462, and will pull a full 25" in hardwood. The Stihl dealer told me that they have not had any problems related to the piston, so I bought one. With the 25" light bar, the saw balances perfect and you can stand up and limb. I basically have put away my other saws once I bought this one, although the 261CM has its place for sure. The 400 is expensive, but after running it for 6 months, I would definitely buy it again.
I just bought the ms 261. Nicest saw I’ve owned. My first saw was a stihl 026 I bought 23 years ago which I still own. Love my stilhl saws.

I've got a 400 and love it. It's great when I need more then the 201 and not quite as much as my 461 and much lighter as well.

Way to go Eva, you really had it the second. Nothing like getting a new chainsaw dirty. Would love a new one , but my 3 Stihl saws from 25 years ago still running fine, and I cut a lot of wood.

Does the oiler keep up with 28” bar?
@ScottiPewPew yea, I forget if that has the roll pin to punch out and turn the oiler up more, but yes I'm satisfied with the oiler turned up all the way.

Kudos to you Eva. Does bring back memories when I got my drivers license in 1949. I was 12 and there was no driver training or testing at tat time. However, my mother, who had never driven a car even while rearing 8 kids, was required to go with me to the courthouse and get a license for herself also. No sweat. 50 cents for each license an we walked the two blocks home with smiles on our faces. Those were the good old days because the car I drove for the next couple years was a 1929 model A Ford.

I held a 400 at my dealer a month or so ago, and put it back on the shelf, since I have 462,500i already. Told the Wife I didn't buy it she about passed out🤣. She didn't think I could go into the Stihl store and NOT buy a saw or 3🤣🤣🤣. So maybe one will join with the fleet lol

Good on Eva it took me three times before I passed my drivers test. On the chain saw I have an MS390 and it's the best saw ever, I have a 26" bar on it and it works fine very powerful. Only draw back I have with this saw is that it's quiet thirsty when it comes to fuel. I run against my friends Husqvarna when we're logging and it's a far better saw, he cuts the limbs and I cut the tree trunks sometime with as much as 5ft to 6ft diameter.

I’ve a 4 year old ms291. I bought to replace an 036pro that was tired with something lighter. It’s been a good saw but maybe next time I step back up to something a bit bigger. I’m 66 yrs old though. Maybe not a 400. Congrats to Eva, be safe young lady.
I have a Stihl 042 Farm Boss that is 46 years old and still cuts like a champ. Had to change out the sprocket, chain, and bar several years ago as they stopped making parts for models that old. In face anytime I need parts they have to salvage them from a junk unit. Best money I have ever spent and at one time I was cutting 22 ricks of wood for my own use every year. One cannot go wrong with a Stihl.
Mike, Love my Stihl 362c, have never seen the MS400. Only one if our 6 kids failed there drivers test, also the youngest daughter and it took 3 times🚜🪵👍🏼🇺🇸
- Congrats to Eva. One of the biggest days in my life was getting my license.
- The hung up cable in the drain pipe has all your followers on edge. You got to love the drama😁.
- The final shot from the front of the new building was very impressive. The recent rains sure help with grass growth. Big big difference from the day you set the concrete cistern only weeks ago. Next year possibly a swimming pool.

G'day Mike n Mel, Thanks for the vid on the MS400 I was considering buying one because at 66cc's it's a perfect mid range Saw and the magnesium piston made sense, now that you've said after running it that the vibrations were lower than the 500I I'm sold 👍.

I have the MS-390 and it’s a beast of a saw as well. I’ve had it for several years and have had no issues. Best of luck with the new saw.

I have to agree. I bought the first one I saw. It had been on the shelf about an hour. They haven't gotten anymore. It's a really nice saw. I'm on my third tank of fuel with it. Still running nice and smooth. Balance with the light bar is about perfect.

give her is no texting while driving. Retired after 35 years behind the wheel of a tow truck and
it is the number one problem on the road now days. OH something you might try on the pipe snake
is get some small PVC pipe and attach a strong magnet, like a fishing magnet to the end.
Feed it through the other end and maybe have someone in the boat pushing while you pull on it.

Congrats Eva! A license is certainly a life changing thing. Great looking saw! Seems to have a lot of bottom end torque. Will be interesting to hear how that piston stands up over time.

Just picked up this saw. Blocked up about 2 dozen logs yesterday and it ran flawlessly. Would have preferred the 500i but you just can't get one!

Hey Mike, I've been running my 400 with a 25" bar for about 2 months now up here in Canada. I usually runn a 660, but the weight was getting to me. I was worried I was going to miss the power and torque. I find the 2 saw to runn almost identical, only occasionally do I notice the power difference, and the weight and Ballance of the 400 mean i can cut much longer. Love the light bar. We will see how the longevity of that Piston is my 660 is getting on the same age as Eva, so I'll touch base in another 16 years on how the 400 has stood up
Any new saw like Stihl or Husqvarna with a brand new chain will cut thru hardwood like butter. The real test is time. How quickly does it start and how well does it perform after a few hard years of use??? Congrats to your daughter!

Confidence & self assuredness are awesome traits, but they need to be balanced with humility, generosity & a desire to find the good in everything and everyone. Eva has a wonderful balance of these key traits & that doesn't happen by accident, she has a couple of fantastic parents and supportive family environment that care deeply about her development. Your family serves as a great example of how to squeeze every drop of happiness & success out of life!

Congrats Miss Eva. (BTW, the person who gave you the test has the same first name as me. :) ). Take it easy in driving by yourself. Short trips, s you build your confidence and stamina up for the longer trips. Every now and then watch some of the 'driving fails' videos. These will help you to remember to watch out for the other drivers, because you never know what might happen on the road. It is a good way to remember to drive defensibly.

I own it and I am an air cooled engineer. I may take it apart to see what kind of coating is on them.. I will try it in an air-cooled race engine. Reason for Mg piston is about a 17% weight reduction making it rev faster and have less shake.
First, Mike just box that saw up and mail it to me here in New Brunswick Canada and I will use it for the summer and give you my honest evaluation. LOL... Second, CONGRATULATIONS Eva on passing your drivers test.
It wasn’t cheap but I bought the Husqvarna combi-can for my fuel and bar oil and it was well worth it.
I have a ms290 my self and love it 😃 maybe I'll upgrade to the 400 there.

Congrats to Eva, glad that's behind her now. I've been thinking about your firewood these past weeks. Y'all have been so busy. I know you have regulars who depend on you for firewood. I hope you can get what you need cut in between the cement pour and finishing the interior. I never think about Fall until September. I hate temps above 75°. I'm fat, so heat makes me miserable. I am an outdoor person, year round. Nothing one can do with heat but hydrate and be miserable, cold weather? I've a large variety of cold weather gear, no matter how cold, I've got the gear to wear to stay comfortable. If you keep getting new saws, you can compete w Buckin Billy Ray Smith. He doesn't have many Sthils though. I do wish Buckin would follow your example and get a Wolfridge splitter though. The virtical splitter he used last time I saw, looked like way too much work, Wolfridge is the way to go! The new grass look great, bout time to mow it. Nice video Mike. Thanks!👍🚜❤
