@@cchisolm92ccserious question - why does resemblance matter? I see comments like this a lot. ppl praise choosing an actor who looks like someone as if that means they can sell the role. I'd think with casting, the energy or vibe is what makes it sucessful. that and making sure they dont do something silly like make up no-nos or prosthetics disasters

It would have to be an unauthorized biopic because, based on how they handled the upcoming documentary, his family still doesn't want to admit that he was gay.

Unfortunately, this video and some of the comments display why it's so difficult for people to seek professional help with mental health issues. He lost his father during his formative years, lost several close friends and family members, and, at the very least, had an unhealthy relationship with food. Think about this, he wrote “Dance With My Father” at least 40 years after his father passed. Trauma is a real thing, folks.

At 50, I still talk heavily about my experience as a foster child, however, I don't now, nor ever, considered my thoughts concerning it, a mental health problem, nor did I need therapy. My foster mom was the crazy one who needed therapy.

Luther Vandross was a vivid example of "a clown's life" and "the show most go on".
In "A Clown's Life", it is said that the clown shows up to do his performance, the clown makes everyone laugh and even get involved in some funny games. When the performance is over, the clown leaves a group of happy and satisfied people to go deal with his personal problems, skeletons in the closet and some personal demons and in many cases the clown won't even give a sincere, happy smile when is out of the costume and makeup.
In "The Show Must Go On", no matter what the performer is going through, no matter what bad news the performer receives, before or during the show ... the performer will go on stage and give the fans the best performance, without the fans noticing any change of character.
Luther Vandross would give his best in every presentation, but no one knew his feelings and struggles.

The problem with being famous for a talent is that people will become obsessed with who you are dating and if you don't want to share that (which you don't have to) folks will call you "secretive" and "very private". The culture of needing to know everything about celebrities personal life is almost psychopathic in my opinion. I'm glad Luther kept his love life private.

You're not wrong, but humans are curious creatures. We seek knowledge to superficially gain understanding and help fill a narrative or perception of who we think that person is. I agree it's psychotic, especially with social media, the big brother of all brothers.

But, it's pretty obvious that if Luther was in a relationship that the general public could understand or approve of - (ie. with a woman) then he probably would have shared that. There are still gay and lesbian singers and actors today, particularly black artists, that hide their partners for fear of damaging their careers. The culture hasn't changed as much as we like to assume.

🤔 *I disagree.* The world would NOT have loved him, because it was a totally different world back then. All of this public fluidity, pronouns, sexual preferences, gender choosing, and alphabet categories did not exist in those days, especially in the Black community. There were plenty of gay people in the industry, but they were all closeted on purpose. Did you see what happened to Ellen D. when she forced her way out? It wasn’t pretty. Luther knew what he was doing. His main audience are Black women, but they hate to find out about Black men being gay. They never would’ve supported songs that they knew were towards men. 🤷🏾‍♂️

@MrKellyELA All of the things you described existed back then it just wasn't in the mainstream. Everyone has pronouns he/she etc are pronouns. So I'm not being obtuse yes trans people exist too and they were told to be quiet about it even if they got hormones and surgery. The LGBT isn't a new acronym and nor are any of the letters. My grandfather himself told who is strate talked to me about how gay people would be on Christopher street and in the castro.
The issue is people had to hide it even if people knew (famous or not) Hence gay clubs, gatherings and neighborhoods. It was about making strate people feel comfortable, presenting strate and not getting yo ass beat.

Thanks to David Bowie for accelerating his career. David always stood up for black musicians. Young Americans album is in my top 10 albums of all time.

I grew up listening to Luther on repeat. I always say his music is the soundtrack to my childhood. My dad loves his and Anita Baker's music. My sisters and I now lovingly joke about how if we came home and the stereo was blasting Luther or Anita or Sade....Daddy was soaking in the tub!😊❤

I loved Luther at every size and still do. As an 80's baby he's an indelible part of my childhood his voice always made me feel safe and loved.
I'm sorry he never got to feel the way he made others feel throughout his life. ❤️

I believe he was lonely. He was a virtuoso singer. Any high-performing person is inherently lonely. Heck, even being a little above average will make you feel it. Life is not cake!

Luther was so handsome and such an icon. I was born in 1982 but I listen to Luther’s music almost every morning on my drive into work. He is deserving of a biopic.❤ My 7 & 11 year old love his music as well.

He is still my mother's favorite singer. I won't say I know his entire catalog, but the bops, i have, I absolutely love. Never too much, Superstar, A house is not a home, Creep, Bad boy, Don't you know, top tier. The more I listen, the more I realize he does amazing covers.

Luther was a staple throughout the 90’s and his voice was smooth as butter!! His sexuality never meant a thing to me or his true listeners. He deserved love just like any human does. He’s a shining star in our night sky now. 😊😔

The number of Grammys won is no measure of a musician’s greatness. That’s why Luther Vandross was a greater musician than the likes of Rihanna, for all their collection of Grammys, will ever be🤷🏽‍♂️
