This whole video is iconic, from the intro by Denzel to the looks of awe from iconic vocalists like Anita Baker and Dionne Warwick, Janet Jackson being smitten -- and finally, the performance itself, the likes of which has never been seen before or since.

Hands down the best male vocalist of all time. The timing, breathe control, pitch, tone. Luther was and is still in a league of his own. Totally undefeatable.

Well said. Luther grabs your ears and your heart automatically follows and he opens it up to receive what he is giving, leaving your spirit fulfilled for the moment while your ears ache for more. Ain’t no one does a song like Luther before or since.
He sung, not lip synched, he SANG. I remember the first time I heard this and so many other songs of his. Had the honor of seeing Luther live multiple times. He gave us so much amazing music for many lifetimes. There will never be another...
there are so many more; approaching 50 and im like damn. Every one can sang, but I can crow a little but I dont earn from it. I learn; you here me. I learn.
Before he started to sing, I like how he looked around the entire auditorium. He was looking at the audience like you guys have no idea what is coming. I'm about to mess all of you guys up for life. Many years later, I still believe this is the best performance I've ever seen....just an incredibly talented voice and a microphone alone on stage.
I opened for Luther at the 17,500 seat Rosemount Horizon in Chicago. Sinbad had to shoot a television project and Luther approved me to take his place for 3 cities - in particular that New Year’s Eve 1989 in Chi-Town. Anita Baker was on that tour as well. He taught me so much about playing to larger crowds, was wonderful and generous to my mother, providing a limo and accommodations at the Ritz-Carlton. And every single show he was on THIS level. I cry every time I watch this missing those bygone days that I got to share that level of success with Mommy and it was this gentleman that made it all happen.
Love how he sings to Dionne Warwick here…such a tribute and she is amazed. She recorded this song first and he covered it in tribute to her as a fan. ❤️❤️❤️💗💗💗🥰🥰🥰
@@davidesmeyer9825 You probably meant to say Luther sung the song as his legacy song, but he did not write it. Actually, Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote this song. If you go back in history, Dionne Warwick was one of Bacharach's favorite singers and he wrote many songs for her to sing, one iconic song being "Walk On By" among many others. To be honest, I never knew Burt wrote this song but I happen to be watching a PBS special on his history of song writing and "A House Is Not A Home" was included in his anthology of songs. Here is the story from Wakipaedia: "A House Is Not a Home" is a 1964 ballad written by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the 1964 film of the same name, starring Shelley Winters and Robert Taylor. The song was recorded by American singer Dionne Warwick at Bell Sound Studios in New York City, and was a modest hit in the United States for the singer, peaking at #71 on the pop singles chart as the B-side of the top 40 single, "You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart)". Another version of the song, by Brook Benton, which was the version that appeared in the film, was released at nearly the same time. It debuted two weeks earlier on the Billboard Hot 100. Benton's version split airplay with Warwick's, and ultimately peaked at #75. Warwick was the first to sing it which is why she was so filled with joy with Luther's version. Nobody could have done it better; he made the song "iconic".
His voice, his appearance and his God given talent. I just keep listening to this over and over again. I think about my husband who passed and wish he was here with me. I wish t could dance with him to this song 😢
Hearing this in 2022 , amazing pitch, voice, a true performer with class! Incredible, Absolutely one of the greatest live performances ever recorded in my opinion .. gone but not at all forgotten .we are all better for hearing this. wow! RIP Mr Vandross
Not at all. You gotta be joking right. Justin Bieber is the man that should give you chills, this guy vandross he's average at best, he needed to learn to just sing the song not throw his words all over the place
This is what a real vocalist sounds like. A raw, untouched unapologetic voice with no additions needed. This man was awesome, we lost him way too soon. His voice is a lesson to so many that tries to sing on what to do and sound like. RIP
🙏🙏Blessings forever GOD loves y'all too forever tell everyone you know and don't know. Jesus loves y'all too forever. Teach everyone how to see and enjoy their blessings too forever❤
The documentary brought me here because I just LOVE THIS VERSION!! It's 2025 & I'm just learning that Dionne originally sang this! Always a classic sang my an AMAZING talent! #LLLUTHER🕊🕊🕊
Actually it is correct bc his comment was 7 months ago and this performance was how many years ago? So it was indeed correct. Also even tho he did sing the song he surely was saaaangin that thang! Have a good day!
After watching the cnn special and realizing that his songs were a cry out for love, and how extremely sad he was even with an Angelic voice and God given gift but love alluded him his entire life made me so sad for him. RIP Luther hope you found peace and love.
What can I say I've always been infatuated with this man from the first time I ever heard his voice, still today when I listen to his music he melts my heart ❤️ looks so dreamy sounds the same, absolutely there is no singer ever that can compete with LUTHER
The look in Dionne's eyes when she says "Sang baby sang" at 2:20 ....inamored by the beauty and richness of Luther's voice...just something to get teary eyed from.
That’s professional by every sense of the word. Range, pitch, tempo is all precise. Dude was a legend and taken far too soon. Cannot think of any recent vocalists that can come close to this.
This man was one of the greatest live performers who ever lived. In my opinion, he's one of very few performers who could flawlessly reproduce the sound quality of his studio-recorded vocals, while still adding ad-libs and flourishes sung in perfect key and pitch during his live performances, to make them memorable and special, but also as enjoyable as the album version.
Amazing. He was locked in. The audience was locked in. Everybody there was aware of how special the moment was and everyone gave themselves to the moment. You felt the synergy between the performer and audience. It was one man singing, but you felt the communal effort behind it. It was spiritual. Such an elevated level of performance art. This is the Book of Luther in the Bible of Performance.
No auto tunes, no special effects of any kind, just raw talent, the voice pitch, baritone mixes and voice twists seperates Luther from the rest, he was simply the best make vocalist of that era.
Just imagine if Dionne Warwick told Luther he couldn’t make her song?! This was his first time singing it in front of her. Such an angelic voice. We miss you sir!

Ever!!!! A true legend... can't nobody sing it like luther
This whole video is iconic, from the intro by Denzel to the looks of awe from iconic vocalists like Anita Baker and Dionne Warwick, Janet Jackson being smitten -- and finally, the performance itself, the likes of which has never been seen before or since.
... DO NOT overlook that's also the GREAT!! Debbie Allen w/Denzel! Nothing but greatness in this clip! The NAACP has been legendary & consistent in featuring accomplished Black individuals. Paul Winfield & other Black industry luminaries -- all captivated by Luther!
Amen
Well, this was a tribute to Dionne. She recorded it in 1964.
Dionne recorded this in 1966.
Right ❤😂🎉😅😊
Hands down the best male vocalist of all time. The timing, breathe control, pitch, tone. Luther was and is still in a league of his own. Totally undefeatable.
Coming back to watch in 2024. How amazing do you have to be to literally play with the audience while you make them smile and laugh and cry? If there’s another side, I’d be honored to shake your hand Mr Luther; you’re an angel.
SAME here. happy Black History Month '24! THIS is a HUGE part of that history.
Exactly 🎉talented indeed
@@diepiriyehappy Blk history month I be 45 next month and I will always love my era of music and I miss him and all of our great wonderful singers and he still makes me feel gd after 20 plus yrs ❤❤❤❤❤😊

You don't see that very often anymore...
Luther never lip synched
there are so many more; approaching 50 and im like damn. Every one can sang, but I can crow a little but I dont earn from it. I learn; you here me. I learn.
Fascinating singer
LET ME BE CLEAR, AS PRESIDENT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA WOULD SAY: THERE IS ONLY ONE LUTHER VANDROSS!
Love your comment!
It's the way he narrows he's eyes just to say I'm now locked in and focused!! then history is made
Lucky u all that could be in flesh n bone
Off the chart charisma start to end
❤❤❤❤ Salute
How fantastic. What a great memory to have.
I was there. Something I will never forget!

This was my brother's theme song. We played it at his funeral 13 years ago. He lived this song.😢
Luther Vandross was one of a kind! I feel blessed that I was able to see this man perform live! Who's still listening in 2024??

ME, all time favorite 'Once you know How'!
Love how he sings to Dionne Warwick here…such a tribute and she is amazed. She recorded this song first and he covered it in tribute to her as a fan. ❤️❤️❤️💗💗💗🥰🥰🥰
Luther Vandross was one of a kind! Oh how I love seeing Dionne's face! Pure joy!
He started as her backup singer
He did not sing this first Luther wrote that song as his Legacy song where did you get that propaganda from quit it and quit it now
@@davidesmeyer9825 You probably meant to say Luther sung the song as his legacy song, but he did not write it.
Sorry babygirl but this song was recorded by a white woman in the sixties

His voice, his appearance and his God given talent. I just keep listening to this over and over again. I think about my husband who passed and wish he was here with me. I wish t could dance with him to this song 😢
You’ll live another lifetime and never witness another Luther, that’s a fact. What a voice we have lost.
No one has ever done it better. The improvisation and the vocal gymnastics are impeccable, and just enough. Brilliant.
I KNOW ONE. PRINCE ROGERS NELSON. MR NELSON.
Hearing this in 2022 , amazing pitch, voice, a true performer with class! Incredible, Absolutely one of the greatest live performances ever recorded in my opinion .. gone but not at all forgotten .we are all better for hearing this. wow! RIP Mr Vandross

He's my favorite male R&B singer. There will never be another artist like him.
Forever he’s the best
Yes❤
Not at all. You gotta be joking right. Justin Bieber is the man that should give you chills, this guy vandross he's average at best, he needed to learn to just sing the song not throw his words all over the place
He was the best and he still the best in my heart rest in peace the LEGEND
Baby, that microphone was ON! Do you hear me?!! Such an incredibly talented singer he was.
This is what a real vocalist sounds like. A raw, untouched unapologetic voice with no additions needed. This man was awesome, we lost him way too soon. His voice is a lesson to so many that tries to sing on what to do and sound like. RIP
His amazing talent will live on forever 🙏🙏🎼❤️🕊️🕊️🎤

Actually it is correct bc his comment was 7 months ago and this performance was how many years ago? So it was indeed correct. Also even tho he did sing the song he surely was saaaangin that thang! Have a good day!
After watching the cnn special and realizing that his songs were a cry out for love, and how extremely sad he was even with an Angelic voice and God given gift but love alluded him his entire life made me so sad for him. RIP Luther hope you found peace and love.

Never in my life will I ever get tired of hearing that voice. Luther love always
This is still his song, I miss all our legends are gone… I miss them all.. love in 2025!
Legends
There will never be another Luther Vandross
No male performer/singer could top this! We miss you Luther.
My Mom's favorite artist...R.I.P. Mommy and Luther
Man....they don't make music like this anymore. So glad I grew up during this era
I feel Good I'm 17 Now Turn it around I'm 71 So Blessed to still be around to hear dat Beautiful Song again
The way he caressed all those notes. Astounding performance from a talented trailblazer. Rest in the melodies Luther.
No auto tunes, no special effects of any kind, just raw talent, the voice pitch, baritone mixes and voice twists seperates Luther from the rest, he was simply the best make vocalist of that era.
sem duvida ❤
Wonderfully said! Btw, he's a Tenor.
There was no one like Luther! There will never be anyone else like him. We lost a treasure. He was a gift.
