  • Combi Boiler - No Hot Water. Boiler Service. Viessmann Boiler. Cleaning a plate to plate heat exchanger. no hot water on a Viessmann Vitodens 100. This boiler is a 35 kilowatt boiler, so I'm going to go through some of the basic things to check. Also, this boiler, the water is fluctuating hot and cold. It goes up to temperature, so I'll show you that, and then I'll show you how to repair it as well.
First of all, let's have a quick look at the boiler. This is the Vitodens 100 WB1C, and it's a 35 kilowatt boiler. We would expect to get around 14 litres a minute from this at 35-degree rise. I haven't turned the power on yet on this, but obviously we'd check the power was on. That's the hot water selector. We would turn that up, make sure that's up onto full, and then we'll turn the boiler on. Then what I'm going to do, before we even take the case off, and before we look inside the boiler, we'll go run the hot water tap, and we'll check the flow rate just to make sure that it's not running too quick through the boiler. So we'll check that now.
The importance of checking this is if you've got too much flow going through the boiler, then the water will be cooler. It can only raise a temperature by 35 degrees, and that's at 14 litres per minute. We can see that clearly, it is about 14 litres a minute. We'll leave that running now, and then we'll go and have a look inside at the boiler temperature.
We've turned the hot water on now, and it's just going up to full. We would expect this normally to settle around 62 to maybe 67-ish, so maybe about 65 degrees we'd normally expect this to settle at. If it goes above that, then we would suspect it could have a problem with a plate heat exchanger, so we'll see what happens here now.
We can see it's going above what we'd expect it to be. This is getting a lot higher now than we would expect. This would indicate to me, or it would give me an idea that we've got a blocked or a partially blocked plate heat exchanger. Now what we'll do, we'll have a look inside, just where it's safe. This shuts off, but then we'll have a look inside and we'll strip it down. We'll take the plate heat exchanger out, we'll clean it out, and then we'll put it all back together. Then we'll do this again, and we'll see what difference we have. We can see that now the burner's just gone down. If we measured temperature of water now, we'd find that the hot water's probably not that hot because it's going on and off. It's going up to temperature, shutting off. You can hear it, it's gone down now. That's the reason for the problem with this boiler. Let's strip it down now, and we'll have a look.
As always, if you're going to take the combustion cover off a boiler, make sure you're gas safe registered, or get somebody who's gas safe registered to do it for you. You've got two screws under here. First of all, you turn the power off, and then we would do all our safety checks. We'd go under these two screws and then we'll just lift the cover off.
I've undone the screws below, and then the case just lifts off. As I say, this has got a seal on here, so you must be gas safe registered if you're going to work on this boiler. Let's have a look inside, and we'll have a closer look. If you want to get to the plate heat exchanger, just lift these flaps down. Then the plate heat exchanger is right at the back there. To make it easier, you're going to take the burner out. Now, this seems to say that it's been serviced 2017, which normally when people write stuff like this on, it means it's been fully stripped down. But when I look at the gas pipe here, I can see that it's still got the seal on there. So I would suspect that when we lift this out in a minute, this has never been serviced. We'll have a look, and we'll see. I've connected the pump onto this now. I'm just going to pump it out. There's no pressure on this at all. Obviously, it's never been checked ... well, it haven't because it was sealed. So I'm going to pump this up now. There's different calculations with this, depending on the system. I normally top them up the about one bar, so on that now, it's just over one bar. As I undo it off there, the pressure will drop a little bit.
I've just connected the expansion vessel back in now. As I said, very easy, just a nut up on top. One good thing about this boiler is everything is really easy to work on. Then the pipe, I've connected that pipe back on there, and then that just connects in. This just connects in back down there. You just push it in, and then you've got a little clip. Then that just clips in there, nice and easy.

So just wanted to thank you for helping me fix our variable hot water upstairs. Downstairs was fine, but upstairs was variable. I cleaned the heat exchanger plate but also topped up the expansion vessel and all is fine now. After her initial doubt (when I flooded the kitchen because I hadn't fully drained it) I now have a happy wife! :)

I have this boiler, this video has been a real eye opener. I had issues with my plate heater fouling up, the installer blamed the rubber pipes, a known issue by all accounts, he cleaned it out and performance was much better. I have since had the boiler serviced regularly by a different company and they do not carry it out as thoroughly as this. I’ll be showing them this video.
I came here as I wanted to learn how to wire a Nest thermostat, which until I get the boiler serviced is pointless installing.
I’m not gas safe so won’t be undertaking any of this myself, even though it looked straight forward.

Interesting video; if that boiler was removed for the hot water fault then it goes to show the value in getting a heating engineer to take a look at it (And get the boiler serviced annually too!) Viesmann boilers a really good as they have a stainless steel inox heat exchanger, so should last a while longer than boilers with the cheaper aluminium heat exchangers. Once again Alan, a great informative video!

Another excellent video Allen ! Thanks for uploading it I’ve fitted quite a few viessmann’s and also maintain quite a few you’ll be surprised how many I’ve ‘brought back from the dead ‘! which have been condemned, all due to lack of proper servicing many had still got the factory paint on the Schraeder valveOn expansion vessel where they have never been unscrewed or been topped up! I think it’s a state of the industry at the moment to be honest, I may be wrong? Whilst the burner assembly is out you also need to clean and check the gaps of the spark electrodes and after refitting the burner assembly the condensate trap will need to be washed out. this particular boiler you are servicing Has suffered neglect and has been ran on a dirty system, The dirt and debris in the Heat exchanger coils has caused the boiler to partially fill up with condensate water
I’ve seen it many times before through lack of servicing or proper servicing, shall we say?
if maintained and serviced well these are a very good boiler giving great reliable service and excellent efficiency

Interesting insight into the dark art of boiler servicing.
I hope the original owner wanted a new boiler ,and not the other option.
Slightly baffled by the air bleed being on the inside and the top up on the outside. I knew of a boiler that kept being topped up then it died of multiple component failure.

Also I recommision vessels in situ helps with draining etc. I had one last week refilled it to 1 bar shot up so quickly and when heating was on it was so High but there wasn't actually any water inside boiler when I drained it I checked usual hose on expansion vessel but couldn't find blockage etc.

Allen Hart Weil Mclain, peerless, lochinvar, HTP, Utica, mostly cast Iron units still in use. I installed a Buderus G115 with a riello burner last year and absolutely love it. Most homes have forced Air here but some have hot water baseboard with requires 180f degree water. Many people here that install High efficiency boilers are very unhappy because the do not see any gas savings because they don’t have the proper heat emitters. Am going to install an radiant slab in my new garage so I’m looking for the proper boiler for that. Keep up the good work Allen.

Another great video Allen, however I have a question about servicing.
Would you recommend that servicing it is done based on time, ie once a year, or by usage? My Viesmann 100 is a couple of years old but It doesn't get a massive amount of use. I'm a single bloke living on my own, out working six days a week so not caning it like say a family of 4 running baths and showers and having the heating on all day long.
All the plant items where work get serviced based on how many hours usage rather than an arbitrary once a year.

My 30kw vitodens 100 has just developed this fault, its 1st fault after 6 years!
My gas engineer just changed the plate heat exchanger for new but since the replacement my hot water flow rate has reduced noticeably at all my outlets. I checked all the service valves and stop tap and everything is fully open. I’m having small problem getting him back due to lockdown shielding.Just wondered is it possible that he’s reduced the flow rate on the boiler somewhere of is it possible that the plate heat exchanger has been fitted wrong,in terms of the wrong way around or up side down? Interested to know your thoughts. All the best

Hi Allen, thanks for putting up informative videos!
I had a Vitodens 100 WB1A installed 10 years ago. Overall I'm happy with it. The first heating company didn't install low loss header. This reduces efficiency I was told by current authorized rep. It is cleaned and maintained yearly. However, the boiler locked out reporting F3 code a number of times. Technician determined that spark generator needed replacement. Boiler worked well for two years afterwards. Now the boiler puts out F3 code again. After last maintenance visit, the fan (or something) made loud humming noise during startup. The noise reduced once the boiler was full on. Everything was working fine otherwise. Had the technician back. He heard it too but couldn't determine the cause. I didn't want him to just replace whatever (motor or fan) making that noise.
Allen you know these boilers well. I would like to get your feedback on some items. 1/. How durable are these boilers? 2/. How often spark generator needs replacement? 3/. Love to have a hot water combi version but I'm worried about having issues without hot water and heat. How reliable is the combi type? 3/. My boiler is 10 years old. Should I continue to have it serviced or have it replaced?
    Would greatly appreciate your opinion.
    Thanks.
    Mark.

    Hi Alan,
Which cleaner chemical did you use to clean the hot water plate heat exchanger . I have a similar symptoms on my potterton Promax 28He I do get hot water, but sometimes for about 10 seconds water gets cooler and then it gets hot again, this happens now and again, not always. I would say intermittent not always. I suspected heat exchanger may be partial blocked or the boiler may be operating like this from new. The boilers is 3 years old.

Hello Allen, I am in a similar situation. When I turn on the hot water, it doesn't come out very hot. When the boiler reaches 60 degrees, it stops and does not turn on again until it reaches 25 degrees. The dial is at number 6. I have cleaned the exchanger, I have also cleaned the coil and finally checked and set the expansion vessel to 1 bar. Do you have any idea what it could be? I suspect that the sensor that measures the temperature is measuring more temperature than the real one.

I only had to call them out once & the engineer was brilliant and found the issue very quickly, which was an installer issue!
This boiler Allen is working on has been mistakenly written off and replaced due to it only needing a thoroughly good clean!
I see this situation quite often now
