    i run a rear single on almost all of my topwaters. it's not ideal for hookup rates but they will not fall off a cliff. it's better for the fish, and it eliminates fouling, which can really give the fish great leverage and get you into trouble. in a perfect world i would run two trebles. my hookup and landing rates ultimately are better, especially hookup rates. but that rear treble is what hurts fish. if you crush your barbs down, especially that rear hook, and use a rear single, you'll rarely hurt fish if your hooks are properly sized. when do i not run a rear single? on what we call "pencil poppers." they have an erratic action and you don't set the hook in a straight line. the plug is rarely pointing at you and you'll miss almost all of your hookups with singles. john skinner does a great A and B video running identical plugs with the hooks swapped and he cannot land on pencils. you need the treble to get the hook to penetrate from the side. the plugs are too big to get throated anyway, 8-10" and 3-5 oz and they're never stationary. when i do run singles on topwater, let's say for a spook, they're big. if i run a 3/0 owner treble i might run a 7/0 owner single in the rear. 5/0 at the least. a 3/0 would look tiny and the plug would be front heavy.

    That first popper you had is it desighned to where you can use it as a popper or stick bait

      The Ebipop is just a popper with the eyes at the back of the lure (just like a prawn/shrimp or ebi). When you pause the retrieve and the tail end drops down underwater, the two big eyes are there as a nice target for the predator coming up from below.

    Hey Duncan, great vid. Do you know if anyone still uses baker rigs?

    • @fishheadtackle
      @fishheadtackle  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There are some people using them, but it is a lot less common these days. The setup was great when hooked up with the hooks separating, but I always felt like I was missing hook ups as the back to back hooks would lay flat against the lure body when the fish rolled over it. I should probably cover Baker rigging in a follow up vid!

    hi loved the video, do you run a swivel & split ring on the front ?

    • @fishheadtackle
      @fishheadtackle  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Hi, For most of the heavier tackle fishing, I run a split ring and swivel. It's simple, strong, easy to change lures and gives you a bit of protection from sharp teeth. When you get to some lighter lures, say below 80g and especially under 50g, many of those lures don't like the weight of a swivel on their nose and it can affect the action significantly. For those I either tie onto a small solid ring and then connect with a split ring, or just go back to a loop knot.

    What’s your view on those anglers that mount tail singles point down?

    • @fishheadtackle
      @fishheadtackle  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I'm not sure if it makes much difference to be honest. When the hook points upwards, you have a point in a very different plane to the belly hook, so that may score you a hookup from angles where the belly has missed the mark entirely. Some anglers believe that the hook point pointing downwards puts the hook in a better position for a lower jaw hookups. I can't say I have seen a huge difference in hookup rates, but a few guys will swear one way or the other is better!
