Hi Jim, so refreshing to hear an honest, non partisan opinion; good to see that you're still productive and positive!. Much love and respect, all the best.
If you look at the results of DXO mark sensor tests, you'll see that the dynamic range of the Pentax K1 is 14.6 EV vs 13.6 EV for the Canon 5D mark IV. The Pentax sensor gets a rating of 96 vs 91 for the Canon.
I love the K1, and I didn't get the K1ii either. IBIS, built in astrotracer, and that screen moves to any angle that I need. It's perfect for landscapes and night photography. Thanks for the review.
K1 has much better dynamic range specially for shadow recovery. it matches or even beats Nikon in some cases.... btw, you don't need the L bracket.... you can just use the right tripod with the right ballhead and you can switch vertical and horizonal modes with a breeze. i ditched my L bracket long time ago.
I liked my K-1 so much I picked up a second body last year. I too purchased mine new in 2016. It was my first new camera, and first Full Frame. I had been waiting 3-5 years for the flagship models to come down to my price range and making due with last gen gear. I don't really feel like I have any need to upgrade from the K-1 currently, or in the near future. I got smashed by 1k pounds of concrete board on a job a few years back and broke my femur, so I appreciate the screen as well! My first K-1 sometimes doesn't return the mirror after a shot, but has always been remedied by a power cycle. That's why I grabbed a back up. I make a meager living through the viewfinder of this camera, so I can't have it failing mid shoot. I keep hearing good things about that 24-70, but I just can't justify the cost when I have a very competent set of vintage primes. Maybe I'll find one used for a good price this year and try it out. As long as I can pass it on for minimal losses I guess it's worth trying. I just never end up selling anything!
I think the K1 is sort of future proofed for still photography, it's that good! I may get the Mark II or a III down the road if my K1 I have now wears out. (I don;t see that happening anytime soon though). The 24-70 is huge compared to old primes! Great landscape lens though ;)
@@JimsPhotographyArt Yeah, I didn't see any reason to upgrade to the mk2. More money for improvements on features I rarely use anyways, though perhaps this improvements would see me using said features more? Unclear, but future proof is a good assessment. The only thing that might get me to buy something else is my desire to try other vintage lenses that aren't K or M-42 mount. Good to see you're still getting out and shooting! I'm headed out now with my Takumar 200mm f3.5 and the auto Takumar 55mm f1.8 zebra I picked up shortly after discovering your channel. I took the 35mm f2.3 out the other day as well. Another purchase influenced by you haha.
Thank you Jim for this very interesting and informative video. I too have had a K-1 since it was released, and I will never part with mine. It is, as you say, a superb landscape camera, and has astro-tracing built in for astrophotography to boot! I'm so glad you nailed the disadvantage of the sideways articulated screen. Most of the cries for a forward facing screen comes from vloggers who rarely if ever have a need to mount a camera on a tripod in portrait orientation. My L brackets live on my cameras, so I hate flippy screens. The best screens in my view are those on Fuji cameras that also tilt in the vertical direction.
Yes, the K1 is superb! It's my dedicated Landscape and Nature photography camera for sure. I still use my 5D Mark IV and a couple of good fast primes for when I want to get creative and for portraiture etc., but when it comes to serious landscape and nature photography outings, it's the K1 all the way....My K1 also got rained on pretty good a couple of days ago, I didn't have a worry in the world about it! Happy shootin' ;)
I Already sold my canon camera and equipment for my pentak k1 camera and lenses last year. It worths having this camera especially for landscape and astro.
You should check out the Canon EOS R. It has the same sensor of the 5d4 but has a full tilt screen and with 100 dollar adapter you can use all of your canon lenses to their fullest.
Awesome news Jim! I don't have the 24-70mm for my K-1. Maybe you can do a bit of a review for the 24-70mm; I may need to consider getting that lens. Awesome image, love the sun stars! All the best to you!
The 24-70 is my default lens that somewhat stays on the camera most of the time. Other than being a little too big and heavy it's an awesome lens and the image quality is superb. Pretty darn sharp too. There's really no alternative lens in the Pentax line up in this versatile focal range that is really this good. Close up shooting at 70mm f/2.8, the bokeh is pretty nice.
Hi Jim. Great video. I have a K1 too. But i miss the L-Bracket for these. I think it is not easy to find a L-Bracket for the K1. Wich L-Bracket do you use? Greetings from Germany.
Good afternoon, Jim! Just stumbled upon your channel. Loved the content and real personable approach and therefore subscribed. I shoot mostly wildlife... with a little landscape as well. Currently shooting the 5D Mk iv for my stills (started with a 60D 7 years ago... gave that to my girlfriend lol). This video was very informative and a great point about the lack of a tilt screen being the major drawback with the 5D Mk iv. My primary field lenses are the Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS iii (amazing lens when the wildlife is close up) and the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. Had thought of eventually adding the 7D Mk ii to the mix and now they have discontinued it. I have noticed a few used ones for sale... not sure I want to go that route (although considering it). I saw your video on 90D / 7D Mk ii. Loved it! Very real perspective and perfectly expressed my concern over the 90D... lack of solid weather-sealing, auto-focus and low-light performance. However, it certainly seems to have some big upsides. In addition to shooting stills... I'd like to start capturing some video of wildlife in the field. Since both the 90D & 7D ii are great (with the already stated drawbacks)... do you feel the 90D would be the winner given that I also want to shoot video in the field? Also... given this Pentax... do you still shoot the 90D? If I pick up the 90D... I would also be buying the Canon 100-400 IS ii. Just can't afford a 500 or 600 f4! Plus I like the flexibility of a zoom while in the woods. Sorry for the long message. But greatly respected your content, knowledge and skill... so wanted to get your opinion. Thanks!
Hi, thanks for the comment and kind words. I ended up selling my 90D, if I would of been more focused on video I surely wouldn't of sold it as it's an amazing video camera. It pairs great with the 100-400 version ii Canon lens too. The Sigma 150-600mm works quite good on the 90D too. I just prefer the 7D2 as the auto focusing is a bit better than the 90D when it comes to locking on and tracking. I think you'll be happy getting the 90D as its an amazing camera. You'll just need to be mindful if you get it out in a rain storm etc.
I wonder what the biggest ease-of-use issues are with the Cannon? I agree the Pentaxes are easy to use. My K5 is as simple as it gets IMO. I must like them, cuz I bought another when the last K5 died. But, now I'm looking at a full frame upgrade, and the Nikon Z6 - price has dropped due to Z6 ii coming out. Not sure which way to go ATM tho ...
The K1 really easy to use but I think the 5D4 is a bit better ergonomically and easier with the joystick and touch screen, and better with video for sure. I still prefer the K1 though, especially as it has a tilt screen.
I've heard only good things about the 15-30. I went for the IRIX 15mm instead and mostly shoot with the 24-70 or Sigma 35 on the wide end. The IRIX takes screw on filters which saves room in my kit bag (and its extremely sharp).
Great video. I'm trying to make up my mind between the K1 and the Canon mark iV. Back in 2012, I purchased my first Pentax DSLR camera, a K5 IIs. I wasn't expecting much, but I needed a camera that could handle the cold Minnesota winters. I didn't think my Canon 7D would fare well under those circumstances. What I found out was that the K5 was much more fun to use, was more logically laid out (Ergonomics), was much smaller, worked with manual lenses, and was bursting with features, something that my Canon 7d mark 1 was missing. I called it a marvel in engineering ! From one used lens I purchased on ebay, I now have 25 lenses for this camera combined AF and Manual. I especially like the old Takumar lenses that you can purchase for peanuts on eBay. Also, the Limited Pentax lenses, outperfom any lens that Canon ever made, even the 'L' series lenses in my opinion(although I dont have all the 'L' series lenses). What I liked about my Canon was the colors. I once had to take pictures of a local Motorcycle Veterans club in Minnesota and the Pentax could not match my Canon when it came to the beautiful colors. With that said, I'm really having a hard time deciding which camera to choose. I already have a Canon 6D and altough I love the pictures this camera takes, it has certain flaws that drive me nuts. For one thing it is NOT a Professional camera. It hiccups, stalls and freaks-out right in the middle of a shoot. The viewfinder dissapears under strong back lighting. The Dynamic range is non existant . No pop-up flash ! This and other little things has me going south when it comes to this camera. I heard Canon put in a lot of work on the mark iv to stay competitive , so this makes my decision even harder. Even if I was to get the K1 I would probably stick to the mark 1 since I heard it has better Dynamic range. The Canon is still a little over my budget brand new, so I probably would get a used model if I decided to get one. I remember when I purchased my first FF the original 5D back in 2004. I paid close to $2500 for that camera, but I was scared to take it out because it cost so much...
Thanks for sharing. I sold the 5D4 and kept my K1, I don't think you'll go wrong with either one. I prefer the Pentax K1 because of the tilt screen and I also have a bunch of Takumar Lenses etc. The K1 and 5D4 are getting to be older now but in my opinion the image quality is still just as good or better than many modern newer models. Both camera's are heavy duty capable work horses to say the least!
I'm doing well, working all the time. Air conditioner is too loud to make videos right now when I'm not working. Some videos will be posted soon though when it cools down a bit here. ;)
I see you've got the Auto Takumar 2.3 35mm lens there. I covet that lens very very intensely. I have the SMC Takumar f2.5 135mm and the rarer SMC Takumar F1.8 85mm both in mint condition and they are magnificent lenses. I put them with my 35mm Spotmatic but mostly I use them with my Sony digital camera and the images are stunning. I'd like to buy the old Takumar 200mm f3.5 if the right one comes up a the right price and then I'm done with vintage lenses and the missus will be relieved. Unless of course a nice soviet one comes up lol.
The 4 lenses you mention I have and are actually my 4 favorite Takumars and the ones I use the most. The 200 3.5 is a bit big but it is an absolutely amazing lens! My 5th favorite that I use all the time is the Auto-Takumar 55mm 1.8 Zebra lens. These 5 lenses are really all I need.
GAS?, probably so. I'm done jumping around though, settling in nicely with what I'm using now as a main kit. I've learned over the last couple of years, newer is not always best for me.
