I've had my K-1 since it first went on sale, and I can't see myself parting with it. And it still looks like new, too. The sensor stands up well to modern mirrorless cameras. In fact, I think that 36 Mpx sensor is one of the best ever made, Great photos, by the way.
Wow! I purchased a SF7 in the early 90's and have only learned of digital around 2020 and picked up the K70. I'm into wildlife and landscape and feel like I'm missing out. Yup, I'm gonna upgrade soon to the K1ii! Thanks for sharing.
This was a big help, maybe I'll get this lens to replace the 16-80. Was thinking of waiting for the new 16-55 II but $1200 vs $700 might be a deal-breaker. Really loved your forest shots.
It's really a great lens, I think you'll be happy with it, I am (and I'm very picky when it comes to lenses) ;)
❤My hot favourite camera.K1.but I'v k3.I see my life Pentax owner's are allways happy.❤🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🇮🇳
I appreciate the sentiment. And the amazing photos too! Pentax doesn't do things by halves. They don't much hype their gear either, just quietly get on with making some of the best optics out there. I've owned film Pentax camera and lenses, telescope eyepieces and binoculars over the years. All exceptional quality stuff and a pleasure to use. I'd love to try one of these cameras, though even at 8 years old, it's still beyond my price range. Maybe I'll get one when it turns 10. That seems to be the sweet spot for digital camera affordability for me, although something tells me this camera is going to hold its value better than most. The weight and size looks formidable: it looks like it's built like a tank.
It's not really overly huge and heavy for a DSLR. It gets a bit big with larger lenses like the 24-70mm f2.8 but is really comfortable with the 28-105 kit lens or something like the 21mm limited. I often have the little 43mm limited on it and really like that lens for just general photography, it's quite small, versatile, and sharp. If you still have some of those older film camera lenses they are perfect adapting to this camera.
@@JimsPhotographyArt Thanks Jim. I had the older M42 mount lenses (still have a couple) not the K mount, which I just looked up and flange distance won't make it to infinity. My Nikon F mount lenses should adapt okay though.. and Tamron Adaptalls. I suspect viewfinder focus assist/confirm for manual focus is going to be pretty accurate on this camera.
@@zetacrucis681 I have a very large collection of M42 lenses, mostly Takumars. I use the Pentax M42 to K mount little ring adapter and it works fine, I have no issues with reaching infinity with these Takumars. The K1 was actually designed with these older lenses in mind.
Great review
Love the tempo. I wanted to clean out my Pentax KP to keep just mirrorless, but then I shot a few with it, and now I kept it and bought two used lenses for it 😂
Had my X pro 3 for the last couple years. Love mine. Hope you keep it for a while.
I'll likely never get rid of it. It's a great camera and fun to use, plus it takes excellent photos, I really like the 26mp sensor for sure.
Having fun is what it's all about , money well spent... thanks for sharing.
Great pictures especially the macros!!
My K-1, bought used in 2017, is my real workhorse camera that I use with a whole selection of prime lenses; a few Pentax a/f, but also m/f from Pentax, Tamron, and Sanyang. Love using it as a walkabout camera, and equally love it for studio b/w portraits ( where I frequently use its 1x1 crop format ) . It has more functions than I'll ever use, but it's a really great camera.
Beautiful shots I do plan don't know when I'm trying to get my hands on a brand new DFA 70 to 210 And then the last and final lens would be the DFA 125-450
I too love the Pentax K1 although mine is a Pentax K1 Mark II just got mine 4 months ago and I love it the camera that I have before that I still love is the Pentax k-70 and I also have their only mirrorless that they've ever made k-01 Love that camera that is paired with the sigma 18 to 300 it seems like that's the only one that wants to work with for that lens although I did use it with my K1 Mark II but every time I had to keep it in the crop mode instead of full frame because it was really ridiculously looking in full frame mode I made that mistake and I had to go back to APSC in the menu for that one but I love it awesome awesome camera I recently got the DFA 15-30 fixed 2.8 Big monster of a wide-angle lens but that produces some beautiful shots as well
My K-1 is also from 2016. Inspiring images, thanks.
Thank you Jim. I have subscribed.
My approach to cameras and cars is the same. You trade in every couple of years while the old one still has some value, or you run the thing for ten years so anything more than scrap value is a bonus. The first requires checking the market for impending updates, and don't get too attached to the thing because you'll lose out. So I'm the guy who runs a camera until it dies or technology completely overtakes it. Which is a lot harder to see on a photographic print than experts and manufacturers tell you.
Ive got a same thing and same satisfaction Yes is the best camera ...
I love mine but the flash connections (PC and Hot Shoe) quit working, so it’s limited to non-professional use. 😞
That's a bummer.
Great advice Jim, I have caught myself in the GAS mode and have really changed my mindset now. I am now in the future proof mode as well. Cheers!
Good timing. I once had a k1 ii with the 43mm limited. I’ve missed it since and planning on getting another one.
I love that 43mm, that and the 21mm are my 2 favorite limited lenses. I think I actually shoot more photos with the 43mm than any other lens.
Full Frame! Its so funny to realise 35mm was classed as minature!! It came into being as a jig for testing cine / motion picture film!
I started digital photography 16 years ago with the Pentax K100D Super, over the years I added many more Pentax Bodies including the Kp,k5 MKII, ALL Three K3 models and the K1 MKII, a camera that became my go to body along with the k3 models for events. The limited series primes are some of my favorite lens. Along with the 21mm the 31mm and 77mm are fantastic. I used the 77 mm 1.8 alot during wedding receptions on one of the K3, it was great for isolation of subjects and head shots, the 31mm was great for groups, last year I had some health issues and I stopped photographing events and went back to doing landscapes and wildlife. My collection of Pentax cameras has grown and now include Panasonic, Olympus, Fujifilm, NIKON, Sony and one Canon 90D, I enjoy using different cameras depending upon what I am photographing. I put down my film camera 16 years ago and now my film like cameras are the Nikon ZF and Fujifilm XT3 and XT5.
Nice collection!
Excellent photos.
It is my favorite FF camera for stills as well. But it's also a great example of what happens when the competition which may not be as good, offers features and capabilities and a company doesn't keep up. There's no reason why the K1 couldn't have done decent video and that's what killed it for me. The rest of it I could live with happily, but I need basic 4k video functionality for what I do which even entry level FF cameras do these days.
I've never even tried the video to see if it even works in my K1 (and I've had it for almost 9 years!). I've never once even considered this camera for video......
@@JimsPhotographyArt It's pretty awful. 1080p, but about 25mbps. It looks terrible. But the photos are the best in class.
My full frame camera is a Spotamatic SP11 I have a Pentax APS-C cameras a *istDL, K100D, K3-11 & a K3 Mark III. I gave my son my Pentax K50 & K70 cameras . I like the build quality of the K3 cameras
Beautiful photos!
Nice images good work God bless!
Jim, on your K-1, there is something attached to the camera. Is it an L-bracket?
Yes, it's a RRS (Really Right Stuff) L-Bracket. I bought it right after I got the camera and it's never been off the camera since then.
Wow! I added you on my fav TH-camrs after searching for some Fuji lens videos but I had no idea you were a Pentaxian as well. Pretty sure the K1 is an amazing camera (maybe one day...). For time being I'm pretty happy (understatement) with my KP/K5iis/K30 apsc bundle. Great images as well!
K1 is one of my favorites as well, nice photos Jim!
I've had 3 K-1s One died after 6 years of abuse including shooting in the rain with old manual focus lenses. The other 2 are still in service.
Nice video. I have the K-1. Your photographs are a work of art. Thanks for sharing them.
Jim I’m only an old hobbyist I have the KP and the Kiii mk iii and love em. Great to see you posting again Sir.
Most cameras nowadays take great photos. A few do good video. Very few do great photos and great videos for the solo creator. The XT5 will work great, but you have to mess with the settings until you find the ones that work. Fuji can do it, just not right out of the box. The XT5 video is only a problem for the solo creator because of the non front facing screen. All hybrid cameras should have the Sony A7RV screen that tilts AND articulates. best screen ever.
I've done several short videos with the XT5 out in the woods, filming different things and having no focusing issues at all. When it comes to filming myself like in these youtube videos focus occasionally fluctuates.... weird! I mostly use a gopro 12 filming myself when I'm out in the woods etc. because of its small size and ease of tossing in the bag to carry around. This little Canon M6ii I just hooked up at my desk actually works great, I'll probably use this doing youtube videos until it croaks ;)
Saludos desde España. ✋
Cool looking lens! I am curious how you got into the GFX system. Did you ditch your pentax system? Maybe a topic for a video? Cheers!
I still have the Pentax K1 but seldom use it anymore. I got rid of all my Canon gear and started using Olympus/OM for wildlife-birds and Fuji for everything else. (I still have a Canon M6ii I use for video).
I'll keep following you because you give such useful information. All the best!
Fantastic photos!
Definitely underrated lenses. The 35mm Pentax 645 lens was one of the best wide angles I've ever used. I shot many many great wedding shots with that 55mm back in the day. 👍👍
I like the Pentax-A 35mm and 75mm the best. The 150mm is also great but I don't shoot at that focal length very often.
Cool little lens! Great to see you making a few vids again, all the best to you!
Fantastic review thank you best wishes from Liverpool uk
Very nice photos!!
this guy is streight up spitting facts, I've never been so concentrated on a video
Love this set up- do you know if there is a way to fire the 75mm2.8 LS variant on the GFX?
Not sure how to do that, or if it's possible.
I really need talk myself out of the Idea ro get a K-1 and this superb glass. But after watching the video of David Hancock about this lens, it's even harder to shake of the mind-bug.
I'm so torn on this. I dont know which one of these to get.
Not sure if you decided yet, but 7dii is available for ~400 dollars second hand. 90D is about 750-900 dollars. Buy the 7dii and a 300 dollar lens 👍
@@elliotness981 I did! I forgot I posted this! I went with the 7D2 and bought a 100-400 Mk1 Canon lens. It is a KILLER combo and makes for taking great wildlife photography images. I couldn't be happier and am so glad I went with the 7D2 over the 90D due to its extra features like the AF points and weather sealing. I can say that I probably will never get rid of the 7D2 now that I have had experience with it.
@@unityxg oh thats so awesome!! I’m buying a 7dii to work as a sports photographer for my college’s club teams. I love hearing the hype surrounding the camera and cant wait for it to arrive
@@elliotness981 Im happy you went that route also! It is such an underrated camera and imo the best APS-C DSLR camera Canon has ever made.
Add a Canon 50D close up filter 77mm to get closer. I use it with Canon lens and my Fuji GFX zoom.
'Promo sm' 💔
Great to have you back Jim! I've missed your videos. The GFX50s looks like an incredible camera. I currently have a pentax k1 and if I were to switch systems this would quite possibly be the one I'd go for.
Nice bag. The X-E series and those little f2/2.8 lenses are a marriage made in heaven Jim and what it's all about for me in the X system, great quality in a small package. Would like the X-E4 at some stage but still too pricey for me with current market forces, I do have the X-E1, 3 * X-E2's and an X-E3 and the X-E2 is my favourite out of those.
Oh wow, you have really dug into the Fuji systems, super cool. I have only dabbled with Fuji, nothing serious so far. Great kit!
