Especially as a landscape photographer... bro I don't want to look at a f***in' screen! I want to look through that clear crystal right through my lens and into the real world. That's what I'm there for anyways, to capture the magnificence of mother nature. Since I was a kid, the best thing about "expensive cameras" (what I called SLRs and DSLRs lol) to me was looking through those beautiful viewfinders. I'll be damned if I ever go to an electronic viewfinder.

Absolutely love your enthusiasm for Pentax mate, which is more than merited. I shoot Canon, Sony and Pentax and the Pentax ergonomics are miles ahead. Nothing feels as good as my K70 in my hand (please, no obvious jokes here) and the innovation that Pentax has demonstrated over the years shows that they deserve huge respect and admiration. Thanks Matt for spreading the word.

I love Pentax and their ergonomic but the technology et innovation are way behind the others brands.
Bad live view , bad Auto focus, not a good ips , the photo noise is awful, and very expensive.
And I compare with other DSLR models from canon or Nikon.

My K70 just fell victim to the solenoid problem, as my K30 did a few years ago. I did love the way it feels, but obviously now..😥 I'm looking at previously owned K1's now. I spotted one on facebook marketplace, but the seller never responded. It was a phenomenal price, too. I thought maybe she was selling it because she was pissed at her husband (got a pair of rollerblades that way a few years back). Anyway, still looking. LOVE my Pentax gear

Matt great video. I shoot Pentax myself since 1979. First camera was K1000 which I sold to buy an MX. From there K20D to a K3 to a K1MkII and a K3MkIII which I use for real estate and AirBnb photography and for fun the K3MkIII Monochrome. Lots of different lenses building my collection. I am not interested in mirrorless which I tried and I don't like. My Pentax cameras are rugged and I love them. My biggest problem is deciding which one I want to use. I see your stuff on FB. Keep up the good work.

Great video. Been using a K3 Mark 1 from the day it was released and don’t have a need to buy another camera. Wonderful system, weather sealing, shake reduction, great feature, amazing ergonomics. I’ve been shooting PENTAX since the 80s and was one of the early ones into their first *istD DSLR at the end of 2003. It’s still working but I’ve been using the K-1 since 2017. While I also use an Olympus OM-D for some lightweight needs, landscape has always been my thing and the K-1 excels at this

Just came across your channel, glad to see someone waving the Pentax flag. I started with the SV in 1966, and later the SL (was a bit sceptical about a delicate meter movement a la Spotmatic). Still using the MX I bought in 1978, greatest 35mm film SLR ever I reckon. Three features especially that do it: 0.97x viewfinder magnification, shutter cocked indicator, DOF preview. Film still does it for me, but if I ever do go digital the K-1 should be the ticket (I'm mainly into landscape too). Lets just hope the bean counters at Ricoh keep the Pentax brand alive, bit of a worry in these uncertain times.

Now that's a man with passion for Pentax! Loved the video. I'm a photo hobbyist. I started with a brand spanking new, award winning Pentax K10D. One of the things that sold me on it was the built in Shake Reduction (SR). The other thing was using all those old lenses. Takumars, SMC's, M and A lenses. Not being a professional I am limited to how much I can spend. But boy do I have a collection of old manual lenses! Currently I use a K-5II. It's an older generation but It's as solid as a rock. I do have a few auto focus lenses and they do a fine job for me. It's a nice system and I'm going to stay with it.

I've still to really put the K1 through its paces and I'm a bit daunted by the need to find more lenses to use with it, but very excited about what it will bring. Pentax should have you as their ambassador you have a lot of zeal on this brand and passion as well. @Luigi13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@MattBishopPhotography Well after using my Canon 5D2 I decided to go with the Nikon system and slowly I managed to sell everything Canon. I am happy with the Nikon system, I like the dynamic range and the built of the cameras, I just recently purchased the D850 and I still have my D810 which I used for almost 5 years now. I will keep the D810 regardless as a backup and even use it since it has a flash and I can trigger my other flash with it.
In mirror-less format I purchased a year ago the Fujifilm XT3 for a walk around and I even shot landscapes with it. These two systems for casual shooting using the Fuji and more serious shooting with the two Nikon DSLR I am quite fulfilled. I am in the USA in Oregon and there are many places to visit and put the equipment to good use. I do mostly stock photography and you can type in google (Rigucci Photography) to see all the array of shooting that I do. Well that is what is best for stock, my category could be classified as a travel photography. Take care and all the best.

@@Luigi13 oh you live in oregon. Plenty of locations there to shoot and plenty of landscape photograohers there too. I have many photographer friends who live in that area. Yes well, the D810 and D850 are great cameras that also share the sony sensors as pentax do, with certainly better AF speed and accuracy than the K1. Prior to the K1 release I was tempted to shift to Nikon but the extra water sealing, ruggedness etc and new DFA lenses tempted me to stay. I must admit though that from my experience the Fuji RAW files just dont do it for me. I will check out your website for sure, and thanks for your feedback. Have a great day

Great video Matt. Nice to hear an aussie accent espousing Pentax.
I just spent a week on a photo tour with 7 others. None of whom had even seen a Pentax in the wild. I got all sorts of questions from the 'old hands'. "Why do use that?" "Can't you afford a Canon?" "Doe's it shoot raw?" "I hear there are not many lenses."
I even got a swipe about the lenses not being "L series" PFFFT. Typical uninformed stuff.
Then I spent a while smiling inwardly as the mirrorless folk struggled in the rain with their flimsy gear. Getting blown over. (the top of the line canon got blown over and the body seal came apart slightly.) Concerned about getting ithe gear wet. Contriving weather covers out of plastic bags. Putting them away so as not to get wet. I just kept clicking away with the 15-30, 24-70 and modified 60-250. Not a worry in the world, except staying upright in a howling gale.. :)
I really should have taken the grip off, mounted the FA 43 or 77 and showed them 'stealth mode in the pub at dinner. Try that with a Sigma beer can or an L series. I use the Da 40 as a body cap.... :)
Then I got back home and pulled up the raw files. Majestic! The most plasticine, malleable files available. Deep rich colours. Pin sharp images. The duds were my fault, not the gear.
Why do I shoot Pentax? Cause its the best damned landscape 36mm camera available. I don't shoot sports, so don't care. I have never switched any of my DSLR's to Video. Don't care to. I shoot people and landscapes. I have the best available tools.

I made a conversion from a Canon 70D over to a Pentax K1 Mk II and I have not regretted it at all. I didn't have the best glass for my Canon, however I have seen my photography improve drastically with my conversion. I have a few older lenses, but I absolutely love them. They are so sharp and my pictures have changed drastically. I used to have the hardest time with my 70D. I would go to edit pictures and see them being soft and it drove me crazy. Have not had the same issue with my K1 mk II that wasn't my own fault. I actually like the weight, it helps me to anchor my shots, and my heaviest lens right now is a FA* 80-200 f/2.8 and I love it. Maybe one day I'll be able to get the D FA 600mm. Great video. I completely agree with all points you brought up with it. Well done! I bought my first Pentax *istDL2 in 2006 and about a year later the K10D, which was good enough for me for about 10 years. Then I got me the K3-II which blew me away. Not only the image quality, but also the fact, that I could transition from the K10D basically without even looking at the manual. Everything, every button, every menu item was just where I expected it. Either from where it had been with the K10D or if it was a newer feature it was simply where it belongs. Unlike Sony, where the menu structure seems like a secret spellbook from Hogwarts. (though I hear that they optimized that drastically in the newest models).
I'm just a bit frightened, hearing that Pentax put so much design effort in the grip for placement of the middle finger. The K3/K3-II feels perfect in my hand, so actually I don't want any finger placement changed...

So Nikon with SLR was my pro rig. Lenses were easily available and affordable! Not as affordable as Takumars as Digital, began to appear! So throughout my life, Pentax K-1000, Spotmatics and K-mount were given haven. Folks gave or `sold for pennies' as I still shot film! Now not a pro, less problem with eyes, glasses, then cataract op. agin only for some reading. * some Pentax finders more for long sighted! I was short sighted till 45! Bravo!

    I am a Landscape Photographer.
Pentax K1 has 36.4MP censor made by Sony, and with NO Aliasing Filter, therefore the censor should is likely 20% clearer than other brand censors with it. I have been shooting with it since the July 2016. Its been a joy to use, while Pentax lens are not the sharpest of all brands, they present extreme sharpness when stopped down to f5.6 to f14 (24-70mm), f4 to f16 (70-210mm) and f4 to f17 (15-30mm) lens. (Note: I had to calibrate my camera to each lens, and surprisingly I had to adjust to -12 to get the best results for the 24-70mm lens, AND I suggest that everyone do same in order to get really sharp images.)
I am extremely happy with this camera, and have invested on lens, ND Filters etc therefore I wont give up on this piece of camera. It has given me lots of joy, and my work can be printed up to 45x30 inches without noise. My first PENTAX was K-1000 FOLLOWED BY ME-Super.

Great to see like minded people all over the world. I also have to explain a lot of times why I shoot Pentax and when I start explaining them the whole feature set of the K1 and what you can do with it their mouths always get more open over every feature. I did also buy the new 50mm 1.4 and the sharpness of this prime hurts sometimes in the eyes and when dpreview finally tested this beast over 1 year after its release they came to the conclusion it is the sharpest 50mm they have ever had at half the price of a Zeiss otus with weather sealing and AF. Portraits just look beautiful with it. But guess what I found out? It is a beast in astrotracing as well with it's superior sharpness across the board and the unbelievable microcontrast. I am planning on getting the 85mm as well because the primes were definately constructed for future higher resolution sensors in mind because of their long development processes. But ine thing I would like to recommend to you espacially after I have seen the raw file in your video. Give Capture one Pro a try out. I switched from LR and never looked back. All the masking (espacially luminosity masks) all in one tool and they have absoutely superb and long training tutorials in their official youtube channel. And they give the customer the choice of a renting model or simply buying the software. And it also works much faster. This "lag" when you tried to zoom in your Raw was gone after I switched over to Capture One. But that's another point I have to explain to people... :D "Wait, I understand you shoot Pentax, but why the hell don't you use LR? "

    • @MattBishopPhotography
      @MattBishopPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks a lot mate for the feedback. Yes, the primes that are coming out are brilliant pieces of glass for sure. As always. I believe that the 85mm portrait and Astro is just great!!!!! Well, to as we’d your q with regards to LR. I only use it for catalogue and imports. All my post production work is done i photoshop, where I have a very antique works flow of masking each individual luminosity as a desperate raw level. It’s something that i am used to and more than happy with the results. I am aware of the other programs out there but for me, as long as I can maintain my 3 dimentionality as true to life as possibile i am a happy man

Afternoon - I also shoot astrolandscapes with the K1. The skies are perfect with astrotracing (ISO 800, f2.8 @70 seconds), but my landscape foreground have the dreaded white dot noise (I shoot in very dark locations - Bortal 1 or 2), LENR is the only real way I've found to eliminate the problem. But the foregrounds at ISO 400, f4 @4 to 6 minute exposures, I hate doubling up the exposure time.
I did try C1's trial for a couple of months (turns out back to back releases) - and upon image loading, C1's raw engine removed the dots automagically - absolutely amazing, but I can not get C1 to process the rest of the image as I can using LR. I do feel stuck (and I went through all of their video tutorials). Also, I still need PS to composite the sky and landscape elements together. After 4, almost 5 years now - my only slight complaint are the white dots (the same as the D800/D810 (same sensor)). Nikon found a way around the dots, but Pentax's image quality is still better. Looks like Nikon compromised and Pentax did not.

    • @MattBishopPhotography
      @MattBishopPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ioio5993 with regard to that I’d suggest too a double exposure. They are very complex scenes to shoot that push these camera senses beyond their limits. With regard to this type of photography I would suggest chatting with Aaron Martinez. This guy knows the k1 very well for astrotracer

    • @Schnizzori
      @Schnizzori 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ioio5993 Astrotracing is only a small hobby of mine so I avoid Photoshop at all. But yeah for the kind of pictures you want to merge together you'll probably need it. For the rest of my work C1 suits me better compared to LR. It works faster, way more color functionalty and also a better raw converter for Pentax files which some people on YT showed side by side with the same raw in both programms. The only area where I give LR still an advantage is their library/catalogue. For some people that's crucial - for me it's not.

As often happens, those of us on a tight budget remain with our first manufacturer when you've invested in lenses etc. It's quite bizarre that Pentax are rarely even considered despite the fact that I and many others have always been happy customers of theirs. People scoffed at Pentax for not having a full frame model for years despite having the Medium Format then and before many others. Hi Matt, I started off into photography with an old camera of my dad's (an Argus) at the age of 12. The camera looked like an brick with a lens stuck to it! After dabbling around with it for a couple of years I finally bought my first camera in the early eighties second hand, which was a Pentax K1000 (which is still working perfectly to the day, may I add)! Started working at an educational institution where Minolta was pretty much the standard; I had the X300 and an XD5. I still did not trust them as much as the Pentax though, as I could pick up the Pentax at any time, do some settings on it and knew for certain that the picture would be perfect. Many years later, working in the commercial photography industry (I then did photographic editing and manipulation, using PhotoShop), I bought a then "outdated" istD for a song! The camera was broken and we had it fixed. I merely changed to digital then as film photography became too expensive at the time. Almost 20 years later I'm still using the istD and although I have given some thought to getting a "better name" brand (for the lack of a better word), I never really felt the urgency to do so as I am still very much satisfied with the istD and don't consider changing yet! I think I am a Pentax user for life, so Good on ya!

Started in the navy with a Pentax point and shoot, then moved over time to a k-1000, then a z-1, and then a k20d, and now a k3. Have loved them all. The performance has been great, still learning all the features of the k3, it’s so customizable. If there was one thing I have been left wishing for, it would be more support in things like high speed sync larger flash units and triggers, but I am seeing things come up now slowly over time.
So yes, I am a diehard Pentaxian, they are underrated but like you say, the quality of the cameras and the lenses have always held their own against some of the big boys, so I will be sticking with them as long as possible..........

Well done and well said. People tend to forget the basics as you say.
I do shoot motorsports with (now for a couple years) a K3 and a K3-II and, to be honest, i just seen my machines and lenses over saturated of work and not being able to follow action as I wanted shooting Formula 1 in very fast Circuits.
But for the rest of series they work great. Yes, the AF could be better and the buffer faster. Indeed. I wish! But those cameras are rugged, they can do WRC at - 5 C no problem. I do use most likely Sigma lenses that do combine great with those bodies and some Pentax lenses (DA* 50-135mm, F 50mm f1.7, DA 50mm f1.8, M 135mm f3.5,etc....). Those are machines that work. Are very well built. Are great in hand for its size and disposition of buttons, its easy to use them and they can produce stunning images.

Still many good reason. Many overlooked. The only 2 negative aspects of the Pentax system is weight and responsive focus. However the k3 iii is a big step forward

Solid vid Sir. I recently rented a KP with the 20-40 limited and was pleasantly surprised by the image quality and external controls. I asked myself, why aren't people buying Pentax? Oh well. I am interested in Portrait/street photography and thinking about getting a K1 with the 50mm and 35mm just to stand out from the crowd.

    • @MattBishopPhotography

Thanks a lot. Glad you enjoyed it. Why aren’t people buying Pentax? Well, there is a market trend for those who know, love and trust the brand. Others just follow market trends and go for brands that release models every 6 months. A bit like Apple in the 90’s remember

Awesome video. I have owned a Sony a6400 for a couple of years. Still don't like using it. Too small (and I owned a bunch of beautiful OM1s & 4s back in the film days), fiddly menu system, poor haptics and ergonomics in general. Oh, ugly as well 😂. So l lashed out and bought a Pentax Kx. $60 Aussie. I LOVE this camera. You hold it with your hands, not your fingers. It just fits so well the menu system is simple brilliant and efficient. The images come out beautifully. It's not a good technically as the Sony, but I believe it's a better camera. I think we are being conned a little bit with Mirrorless cameras under the guise of "smaller and lighter". What they really are is cheaper to make. I don't want to look at another damn screen, I look through the camera at what I am photographing: through that beautiful viewfinder, holding a camera that fits beautifully in my hands.

the weathersealing! yes it is great, I have a K3II and went to Niagara Falls on a rainy day, others were running around with little rain coats for their cameras. I was what is that all about??? I just kept shooting, the rain and the mist of the falls were not a problem for me.

Hi Matt! Hope you had a great Christmas and New Years with your family! Saw this video again and you do have a great setup! Gonna do more with my K-5 soon now that I bought a 40mm limited pancake lens for it! My first autofocus lens. It’s sweet! Will post a few later this month on IG. You inspired me again! 😉. I see you have Patagonia workshop videos on your channel. Are you guys there now? Good luck and good shooting! 👍. Anthony.

Nicely done - I know you posted this in October, but one question - the wide angle 15-30mm f2.8 - you mentioned using a polarizer with the beautiful waterfall shot - curious how that was done. You are right about the weather sealing, I do a lot of sports photography in Texas, and have been caught in drenching thunderstorms and never had any problems with my Pentax gear. Phenomenal weather sealing. Rain, snow, ice, no problem.

Yes they are a rugged camera, built for rugged conditions! There are a few companies that make Filters holders for these lenses specifically. Kase, nisi, haida and wanderpana. I use the kase which seems to be more neutral and resistant too

I went through a similar direction but started with a Spotmatic F. The first K mount was a P30T and then a buch of film cameras, even a 67. I skipped the *istD too and got a K10D. Then K7, K5iis, K3 and K1.
I need to learn about the contrast detection, I just manually focus (I own so many manual lenses). I am pining for the 15-30 and it will likely be my next purchase (I have the 20-35 f4 A and 20mm f2.8 A ) Thanks for the tips.

Nice thing about the Pentax range is that I still use my standard 50mm lens which I got with the K1000 on the istD, as well as doing macro work with the same 50 lens in conjunction with the mount K adaptor ring!

Hey Matt, thanks for the video, it wasn't half bad! that means pretty good, from where I originate in England anyhow. Nice shots too, maybe one day I will be able to get some half decent ones. nice to see a video not coating off a Pentax for a change. I used to shoot Pentax when I was a teenager, but then that was the film days..... I really liked the camera..... but unfortunately didn't have the money to buy or process lots of film, so I kinda left off for a while. Now older, a few years back I bought a Nikon D5300. It does not do too bad, but one day I would like to get a Pentax system. anyhow, thx again, and hope to see more videos..... remember the more one does something, the more one gets better at it. bye for now.

I can actually see myself on TH-cam so last well shot an on field type blog. Will release in a few days so hope that the viewing quality is much better. I assume if you watched the video it’s because there is a part of you that wants to come back to Pentax, right? Anyway, thanks for the time to give me some feedback. Much appreciated and here from you soon!!!! Cheers mate

I got a K3 version one from few years back because I started even before you in the 70-s with a Pentax Spotmatic which got me a front page photo in a major newspaper, a photo in a book, and much more. The K3 I married to a Sigma 17-55 constant f2.8, and unless I'm using the K mount Rokinon 85 1.4 for portraits (amazing IQ rivaling any top Nikon or Canon) the `7-55 is on there most of the time. Pentax constantly gets sppofed and put down by pro reviewers, but loyal Pentaxians know the facts. They are sticking with DSLRs, don't give a shit about mirrorless, are behind on a lot of bells and whistles, but when it comes to capturing color correct images, Pentax is first class. Its a tuff camera market these days. Let's hope Ricoh doesn't give up like Olympus.

Excellent video advocating for Pentax in the digital age. Their lenses & bodies pack a lot of perks into them.
I've have been frothing over a K-1 the last month after picking up an old AF Screw pentax system from 97'.
For a while I've been so bored of Canon and have been thinking to switch to Sony, my passion is mainly in street / landscape / portraiture.
Only issue is that I love a viewfinder, Mirrorless don't appeal to me beyond what they pack into those Sony bodies and their lens compatability.
I may hold off until the K1iii is unleashed, as it's logically expected to contain USB3.0 at the least (for pro tethering), and also 4k video at 30 (at the least).
I love photograhy as a hobby but I also need to conscider it as my primary skilled profession, so since going pro requires a certain standard of features that could be found in a Canon 5Div or sony A7 whatever... My fingers are crossed for an amazing Kiii that'll really shake up the industry, or at least revive and diversify the pro-DSLR market.
In the meantime I will enjoy shooting my FA* 28-70 2.8 on my old MZ-5.

A new k1 III with some integrated new features that we have in the current K3 would be a stunner. For me, I will be happy to wait for a few years yet, still so happy with the k1 Mark one and two for now and would prefer to be patient enough to give Ricoh the time needed to bring that beast out
