- Remote journeys through fresh snow, winter landscapes, catching fish and cooking on campfires, this is what I love about winter camping. Its challenging but very rewarding.
I'm driving a remote wilderness road to a clear water lake to do some winter camping in the Jeep Cherokee XJ. It's about -15c and hopefully catch and cook up a decent meal on an camp fire in this spectacular winter landscape.
Early winter is my favorite time of year for winter jeep camping, the temperatures are cold but the snow is powder so its pretty easy to drive.

I miss camping. Thousands of dollars worth of camping/fishing gear (and tools) got stolen from my Chevy Tahoe SUV almost a year ago. Worked so hard to acquire it all when I was working. I have NO use for thieves, may they rot from the inside. Great outing there Mike, the rig's lookin' good.

Every year my kids bring their kids out to my property for about 4 or 5 days of camping at Grandpa's house
The grandkids are in charge of trying at this point they haven't done it yet to get the first campfire started
Every year I test them every year I add a little bit more to their fire starting kit
Ah that just sounds fantastic. The way it should be for them. When they get that fire going for the first time It will stick with them forever I'm sure.

One of my favorite things is to catch a small pail of Perch like those. We filet them and cut into strips then cook similar to shrimp with your favorite seasoning, delicious poor mans shrimp!
They are very good to eat. I tend to just egg and batter mine in wheat free flour (wife's celiac). Its pretty good and next time I will probabaly take what I can and not care too much about size. Found my fish knife also! What seasoning do you use?

Being a Marylander we use a lot of Old Bay seasoning. Turns out it's actually quite tasty on much more than just seafood. Appreciate the reply.

This was a very cool outing Mike. I love being out in winter alone as well, so can appreciate the tranquility that was conveyed throughout the video. I see you added a saw to your kit--looks like it worked well and most likely saved some energy. I really appreciate the time and effort you go through to provide multiple camera angles while you are traveling. It seems that effort gets lost behind the scenes as we are brought along for the journey. You do a tremendous job with your filming while juggling all the other tasks at hand. Besides the scenery and adventure, appreciation for your camera work is one of my favorite things about your videos. I hope your viewers truly appreciate the effort that goes into that aspect of your work. Looking forward to the next one!
The camera work is something I enjoy greatly as you can probably tell. I will hopefully upgrade my setup soon which in turn would make my filming a bit easier. The drone has been a massive game changer as the driving shots are just much easier given it flys with me.
Thats actually good to hear that the effort gets lost behind the video, that means I'm doing a good job and it feels natural.
I replaced the Silky with a new one, it's a monster at sawing wood. I almost toyed with a chainsaw but I think I will stay basic for now. Thanks for the comment, really appreciate it 🙏

Thanks for watching! Most places I camp are because of the fishing. Ice fishing is a bit of a substitute for me but summer its fly and spinning.
For pre heating the engine cheaper than a webasto and more reliable you could check out military surplus and old style radiator heaters. We used them on the trucks down to really cold.

I was having a bad day today, still at work, outside in the darkness and cold, but watching/listening to your video elevated my mood, once again. Thank you for a nicely produced, quality clip. 👏
I'd definitely recommend Webasto/Ebersprächer/Binar or similar auxiliary heater. Living in Lapland I used one on my diesel car even when driving in cold weather as the engine temperature wouldn't go past 40°c in really cold weather and that's both uneconomical and bad for your engine. Not sure how the old VM tractor engine does in the cold while driving, but at least it'll help with cold starts immensely and doesn't require external power sources. They do use both fuel and battery though and won't work if either is low and you shouldn't use one if you only drive very short distances, but I guess that won't be a problem for you 😅
Also, judging by your heating time I'm guessing you have a radiation heater, an element slapped on your oil pan or side of the engine? If you want a bit of help and cheaper than Webasto, you could easily install a Defa/Kalix etc heater that'll heat and circulate the coolant. It's installed in the coolant pipes and works usually within 30-60min for your engine size. Same idea as Webasto, but does need electrics.

My high switch is a small latch that pulls the wire of the mechanical pump to about 1200rpm.

You can get a webasto from a discovery 3 from uk for about £65 then a guy in Poland does a W bus controller for another £50 it’s on my long list of projects for my van.

I remember that weekend in Wales with you two. It was great fun, still strange what happened to Lee. Toothache is just the worst. I always imagine an apocalyptic situation with toothache and what I would do.

I've have one very very frightening experience while in the wilderness here. I've not been back to the location in about 4 years. I've never spoken of it on camera, only with a Sami friend of mine. Sami are like indigenous reindeer farmers here. He's quite spiritual and open to things so I opened up to him about it.
He just told me I wasn't meant to be there and to not go back.
I've toyed with the idea of going back but what I experienced was extremely strange and despite rationalising it, I can't explain it.

Hi, new to the channel and that jeep is fantastic, on a side note an old boss is mine swap his daihatsu fourtrak for a 2.5 jeep sport I was only 20 at the time I nearly crashed it, he wasn't happy with me, and yes your a big tasty ice lolly for bigfoot😅

I’ve been running a Webasto diesel heater in my commuter for seven years now. It has had zero problems and takes roughly 20 minutes to heat the entire cab and engine in -15C. I’ve never had to scrape my windows. I had to pay 26k SEK for mine, but think it was worth it.

Im a bit better with my ODC these days, honestly lol! The drill was left outside and not cleaned and put away, plus all my pots and pans just left overnight under the jeep. I'm trying hahaha! Thank you though regarding the filming comments, I do really enjoy filming so its nice to hear.

Also an idea: Maybe you could incorporate more first person angles into these videos.
I will have to try McCormicks Microplastics, although i'm probabaly eating them every day without knowing anyway. You think some FPS angles would be cool, I thought that when I filmed the morning stuff. Thanks for watching.

Have you looked into PTC heaters.
I really love the way you film and the sound quality. What gear do you use? To film it all yourself is incredible!
I have a range of gear but nothing too spectacular. My drone is probabaly the best thing I have, a DJI Mini 3 Pro although I record audio separately on a H1 zoom. My main camera is a Gopro Hero 8 Black and I have two backup Gopro 6 Blacks to do the under shots. Its mostly the settings on the Gopros and Drone that are important. The lenses are all linear, 4k with no sharpening, colour, contrast done by the cameras. I film flat and I adjust everything in post to get the cameras to produce the right saturation, levels and sharpening.
My audio is a Rode shotgun mic and the H1 Zoom, mostly adjusted to +20db for the Gopro's and around 33 on audio gain for driving shots.
Provided you don't let the cameras refine the video in any way you can get them to look professional enough. I also use ND and CPL filters to limit the light and give motion blur on driving shots but also to stop oversaturation on snow because everything's white so its difficult to preserve the darker areas without the filters.

The front facing drone shots are great! My Dji mini 3 pro always wants to track behind the vehicle, what wizadry are you deploying Mike? Some multi tasking driving and flying? Great video as usual. Big love for the XJ👌
Some shots are manually flown due to an altitude issues and open spaces. The other shots are tracking done by the Mini 3 Pro. It tracks in front if you take it slow and let it get some speed up and then it stays in front provided you don't exceed the speed it can do. Also if its in a corridor of trees it cant get behind you so its forced to stay in front.

Yeah they are awesome. I wish I had two pairs because they scratch easily. They don't run hot enough to melt snow though.
Great video. It has given me more inspiration for the camping equipment needed for my xj. Where did you get the dished metal cooker from? Or did you fabricate it yourself. It’s really neat that you can remove the burner and use it over a fire.
Its partly fabricated but originally the dish is bought. Its called a Murrikka and they are originally just for open fires. mike ,what is the MPG of your jeep?
Its about 1 in 11 which is 25mpg. To get this though you have to do a long consistent drive on road.
Great adventure as always. How do you find the drill batteries in cold weather? I’ve lost two in the cold.
The left the battery in the drill outside all night and used it the next day. I was surprised it worked but I cant imagine its good for the battery. Next time I will keep them in the fridge whiles its keeping the food, milk warm over night.

Another great video, what’s the red and white device you put round your neck when you go out on the ice?
They are spikes on lanyards that you grab if you fall through the ice. So you can pull yourself out easier. The ice was very thick but there are springs under the lake were patches can be thin so its good to have them.

Mike, what would happen if it got sufficiently cold for your battery to not work, such that you couldn't power the engine heater?
I would cold start the engine and beg it for forgiveness. I'm investing in a Webasto engine diesel heater. They cost a lot but its much better!

@@tonyanddeb1012 I appreciate that. The family are well, gearing down for Christmas at the moment. The 4.0 is a slow project, my plan is to keep gathering parts then get the bilk of it done so its a usable vehicle before the summer.
How hard was it to get the water out if the fuel from your last outing?
It wasn't much fun. I took the fuel filter out, dropped the tank and cleared the fuel lines with compressed air. There was about 2.5L of water in the tank and I had to drain about 80L of diesel off into containers. I've left the containers in the garden and the water is frozen at the bottom. I will fill the Jeep up with it on the next trip.
It was a shit job but my own stupid fault.

HI :) I plan to take a trip this winter with my family, from Poland, through Sweden up to the North of Norway and back. I noticed you are using on your rig the same tires that I run on my 4x4. While in Poland it is recomended to use winter tires during winter and most people change tires for the winter period ( i also run winter tires in my day to day car) By law it not required. I read that in nordic coutries it is required by law to use winter tires and not using them may result in fines? I'm pondering changing my cooper 4x4 tires to normal winter tires for the trip, in order not to worry about being fined. As can be seen in your video and with my experience in Poland, Copper S/T maxx tires are quite capable in witer conditions but they are not strictly winter tires. In your videos you drive mainly in the wildirness :), but in order to reach the wilderness i suspect you also have to drive quite a bit on normal public roads. Did you ever had trouble with the police in winter time on those tires? I would much aprreciate a recomendation on an action plan for my trip regarding the winter tires when it comes to the customs in Your parts of Europe :) I love your Videos and keep up the great work :) i learned a lot from yout videos on deasel heaters whitch I also will be using during the trip :)
They are not legally a winter tire and they would be extremely dangerous to run here as one. I have had mine drilled an studded with tungsten truck studs, 180 studs per tire that protrude 2/3mm out from the tire. This makes them a legal winter tire here in Sweden and extremely good on ice and compacted snow. You can take almost any tire and do this and run it legally, but its easy to do on mud terrains because the lugs are so deep so there easy to drill.
If you want to run the coopers here you would need studs. You can buy ones that you screw in yourself. You get a tool with them so it can be done at the side of the road. It might take a few hours to do though so I would either stop by a garage and get them to do it or book a day on a campsite and rent a stuga (cabin) so the family can be warm inside while you spend the day drilling and studding the tires.
There is the other possibility that you could just risk it. Many do and seem to get away with it but the roads are around 4cm of ice and snow so its a risk on safety also.

Bitting my ass (lol) cold diesel starts are better w battery chg.do u use solar panel? I use small panel for my Cummins in winter to keep batteries topped off and cold weather radiator cover for faster heat up.👍🏻🇺🇸
I have a battery charger built in so when its warming up its charging. I do have solar, on the roof tent and portable panels but it brings in very little at this time of year. The sun just isn't high enough but perhaps on a brighter day Its possible to help a bit. Thanks for the tips and for watching.
