Epic Drive And Chill Adventure / Winter Jeep Camp

  • I'm back out for a few days solo winter camping in the Jeep Cherokee XJ overland build in my roof top tent.
    The snow is pretty wet and dense at this time of year, plus its around 3 feet high, which is a bit too much for my 35 inch tires. I found a semi ploughed track that must have been used a couple of weeks ago. The snow wasn't deep and it was a nice run into the wilderness where I could get in snowshoeing distance from a lake to fish.
    Thanks for watching!

    If you fit an inverter to the starter battery you can rapid charge the modern power stations off the alternator in an hour or so. My son was a pro skier for a bit and we used to run a ski iron with the engine at idle no problems. Obviously no problems if driving. As you trips never seem long enough to be diesel constrained this with induction cooking seems a good solution

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a very clever hack for quick charging. My winter trips are pretty short, just a few nights at the very most as we have a young family, and I find it hard to be away. Maybe when he's a bit older, he can join me. I would love to do a longer winter adventure, maybe when I have a locker, though!!
      Thanks for the tips

    So certain older volvos had a dana 30 rear with a govenor lock LSD. Which is not ideal, but it acts open until one wheel spins a certain rpm faster. Then it kicks in. Where you are, they should be cheap. If you want something better Id recomend a detroit trutrac

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Jeep has a chrysler 8.25" 29 spline on the back with a track lock. It's just an lsd but they are very good as both wheels always spin together. It's not so good when you don't want to drift, but a 30 on the rear would be a downgrade due to the small ring and Pinion.

    I'm sitting here on my 69th Birthday (Billy No Mates, Wife back in Russia), eating roast chicken, baked potatoes, salad, mayo, bread n butter etc. with a bottle of Merlot and watching you. What can I say, firstly excellent content as always, you really mastered that drone and getting it to fly backwards or camera reversed, no idea about the latest technology, but it works. Reminded me of the drone footage that The Van Life uses. Old Timer Hot Tip here, IF you really want to attract BIGFOOT then you ought to smear vaseline on the outside of your rooftop abode, downwind, the attractive scent will travel for miles (I of course don't know this personally, I got it from some old Alaskan HOMO).
    Next, I think that I only heard you swear once before in response to HAZE OUTDOORS wind up, but it sounds amusing to hear you swear in your own videos. Lastly, banter aside, serious question. SNOWCHAINS, do they work on when your tires/tyres are deflated or, do you have to inflate back to normal PSI? IF you had a front differential lock, would you have to have snowchains on all four wheels or two, front or back - I ask because my Lada Niva is permanent 4x4 and as yet, I've never needed to use chains, but I don't go off-road where there is such snow as you get - (so far). Thank you.

      Haha! Well I carry an air horn, that's all I have. I've seen three bears in total but only had one near me at camp at an odd time of year, which is why I think it was there. It woke up early and smelt bacon and pancakes and got curious. It ran way as soon as I made a loud noise.
      Were not allowed to carry bear spray in Sweden, or a firearm, unless hunting. Deterrents are all we can do, but saying this its very very unlikely and rare for a bear encounter over here, despite how many bears there are. They are really shy but I believe things might change due to the diminishing numbers of European elk.

    What engine did you swap in ? Seems alittle low on power/torque?

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Torque is 380nm, power 150hp. It's a factory engine we get here in Europe, although not quite stock. I've always been very happy with it as the peak torque curve is around 2000 rpm, so it's never really spinning wheels. They are not good at floatation work but unstoppable when crawling. A turbo swap would help bring in earlier spool up, but we shall see. Thanks for watching

      You may not understand the language or what I say in the video. Maybe you can translate this. It's a family vehicle, and three of us use it over the summer and travel. Also, the flies in Sweden are very, very intense, so having a closed bedroom on the roof helps keep it closed off throughout the day to stop them from building up over time.
      It's pretty logical unless you're just not interested in logic and prefer keyboard banter.

      DId it occur to you that this is my version of enjoyment and what gave you ptsd didn't give me that. If an axle broke, I would just reverse and replace it with a complete spare.
      No matter what happens, I just expect and deal with it as I always have done. It's part of the adventure for me and part of pushing things to a my version of a sensible limit.
      Giving people that understanding of their perspectives is an honour code I live by. I'm always disappointed to see it not shown by others. You do you Jer, and good luck on the PTSD.

      I've never been very good at replying to comments like yours. It's difficult to reply to because it's not really a question. It's a statement from someones perspective of what they would do without considering my own perspective or values.
      I really get great enjoyment and satisfaction from my work and interests. My choices to build my vehicle come from passion and enjoyment. Alongside this, I've been on many adventures, alone and with my family, which we all really enjoy. If I crash it tomorrow, then so be it, and then a new challenge begins.
      There is much more to mine and my families life than the Jeep, and our weekends mostly involve skiing and snowmobiling, which is where most of our money goes. Actually, food and bills are where it mostly goes these days...
