    I write left-handed and here are my observations. My first grade teacher told everyone in the classroom the following: "Right-handed children, place the paper under your right arm and left-handed children, place the paper under your left arm." This advice makes sense from a symmetrical perspective. The problem is with an instruction for cursive writing which is that the letters should all slant slightly to the right. This isn't actually a rule, but a side-effect of writing with the right hand. Right-handed people use their wrist slightly to move the pencil up and down. If left-handed people were to use the exact same mechanical motion with the paper under their left arm, then their letters would all be slanted to the left, which for some left-handed people they are. Some left-handed people use the finger push/pull strategy to slant their letters to the right so there is no wrist movement involved. As a child, apparently I was more concerned with slanting my letters to the right, so I turned my paper to the same position as right-handed children which allows my wrist motion to work exactly as a right-handed person's. This left-handed writing style causes me to write on the paper coming in from the top of the paper and also causes me to smudge previously written letters and stain the underside of my hand which has never actually been a problem. This left-handed writing style is not the same as the hook style because of the orientation of the paper. My hand isn't hooked. My hand is relaxed, and when I write, I use my wrist to move the pencil just like a right-handed person does. I'm a software engineer now so none of this really matters anymore since everything I write is done using a keyboard.

      Well said: Me too. I'm 58( embedded sw/hw eng) and had these issues all along. I smear and and find starting at the left side of a note book uncomfortable. I often take notes in columns starting on the right side and new columns added toward the left open area. Weird.

    I write with my left hand, but those positions are so awkward for me that it feels and looks like i am writing with my feet. Using that way everything is diagonal and one could confuse my letters easily with a mix between ancient Egyptian and Sumerian. I actually slant my paper the other way to see, but smudge it but feels more natural to me and I write best when standing instead of sitting, now smudges aside then it's a piece of art, perhaps it's too late for me

My dad told me that “That’s the wrong hand to write with, you write with your right hand” or “You write with your right hand, not your left” something similar but yeah. My left hand writing is pretty decent it’s a little slanted and my b’s look weird, along with my 6’s but I’m practicing to become left handed again. My whole life I lived with my right hand being the dominant hand... tho nowadays I kinda feel something like it’s giving me the urge to just not want to use my right hand even tho it does everything perfectly, for some reason even if my left hand is kinda whack at doing stuff, I seem to just keep telling myself that my right hand isnt my real dominant hand and so every day since the last 2 months I’ve been trying to assimilate being left handed

    I have a theory: anyone who tries to teach the tripod grip using a normal pencil to a left hander doesn't know what he or she is talking about.
    I have yet to hear someone make the following observation: how come right handers don't find much of a problem using the tripod grip? Answer: because the tripod grip fits well with the right hand writing mechanism. Howevet, it does not fit so well with the left hand writing mechanism, and that's why we have left handers doing all sorts of grips even if they were taught the tripod grip.
    Unfortunately, the grip technique she teaches here can only be used for show (writing for short periods, legibly). To write for long periods comfortably with the left hand, modifications to both the pen and the grip would be needed.

    • @fangming5173

      I'm not saying tripod grip doesn't work at all. I'm saying tripod doesn't work as well for left handers as for right handers, and that it gives some problems to left handers that seldomly happen to right handers. For example, the traditional tripod shown here often causes hand soreness to left handers but not often to right handers, and that is due to the difference in writing mechanism. Also, a discussion of the writing utensil is missing in this video, which is paramount for comfortable writing for left handers.
      If you are not convinced, just write with tripod on both hands, and I mean exactly the same grip with not even the slightest variation, and compare the feel of writing between the two.

    she talks so slow, as if being a lefty means that our brains are constantly on a narcoticum.
    i turn my paper, but personnally puting it in a 3 'o clock position and writing the lines towards the body is much more comfortable for me.
    ink doesn't smudge that way and it even works halfway comfortable on these weird university seats with attached table (of course to the right side, because they're like 2 out of 100 seats that are made for lefties).

    I'm a leftie and when I write in English (left to right) it looks horrendous and when I write in Arabic (right to left) it looks marvelous. Pens and pencils don't like to be pushed along paper, they liked to be pulled along paper like a paintbrush. Whatever grip you use for whatever language you write with whatever hand you write with needs to take this 'pulling effect' into account.

    • @missscarlet7902
      @missscarlet7902 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pulling effect is lefties going right to left when crossing. When a rightie crosses their T we go left to right, and pull it into our bodies. Lefties tend to cross right to left, therfore pulling into their body. Same with letters like O. We tend to write it counterclockwise while lefties tend to write it clockwise. I didnt know this until I was looking how to teach a leftie how to write, and bought my child a left handed practice book. Her writing changed tremendously after she made those changes.

    Since third grade, when cursive was taught - back in the day when we still had cartridge pens that required a left-handed nib - I have written with my paper completely sideways. I started with it upside down as the teacher came down the rows of 35 students and turned everyone's paper the same way. In China and Japan I draw quite a crowd as it looks like I'm writing top to bottom (which I am, so far as observers are concerned). Same with using chopsticks in my left hand! My left-handed father and most other Southpaws I know use the awkward "hook" position. We lefties are something of a "tribe" and usually acknowledge each other in one way or another...

    • @wallyhighsmith9005
      @wallyhighsmith9005 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hook strategy is used by left-handed people who don't orient the paper all the way to how a right-handed person's paper is oriented. I'm left-handed and I angle my paper all the way to how a right-handed person's paper is angled. My hand is not hooked, but relaxed and my letters are slanted to the right. I do get the smudges on the paper and stains on the underside of my hand however.

    One reason I came here, is because my left hand was very bad, and I can not mirror image between hands, but with time, my left hand is functioning much better. Left hand is improving very quickly. At first I could not even use a left handed box cutter, now it is quite easy. Even though I was right handed much of my life, I've had trouble with the right hand. Right hand has been more than twice as fast as left hand, but now, I really love doing most things with left, box cutting, keyed locks, and now writing. I now hold with right hand, and place stuff on shelf with left hand. Have had head injuries when younger, yet I can type both handed, due to muscle memory, and learned on a manual typewriter.

    A left handed child will initially pick up a pencil and hold it in a mirror image of how the Mother or teacher is holding the pencil right handed. Then, the child is "corrected", to hold the pencil in that awkward hook.
    I think that curled, hook stance was taught to a left handed child to make the child look 'stupid'
    By the time I started school, Mother had taught me to read and write. I held the pencil in my left hand, just a mirror image of my Mother's right hand hold. I refused to make the curved hand "hook" that the teacher insisted on because I was left handed. So, the teacher made me sit on my left hand and learn to write right handed.
    Many of my left handed friends my age were not forced into the hook, so wrote normally.
    One left hander had the most beautiful cursive I ever saw.
    Thank you for this video. Maybe it will educate a few right wingers. (Yeah, it's a satirical pun, meant to be offensive. So don't flame me.)

The little rubber grips that are supposed to help never felt good either). It works, for a time, but the problem is that it can make my hand cramp after a while.. I think part of the problem is that our writing is made for right-handed 'pulling', not left-handed 'pushing', so we need to apply a different kind of force. That said, it's possible to develop beautiful penmanship as a lefty, but it'll likely take a little bit more effort. It will get easier the more you write (and we all write less, these days!). :) At least we don't live in a time where left-handedness was a sign of the devil, to be 'corrected' with punishment!

      Then what are you supposed to do? No matter how much I practice(which is a lot)it never seems to get any better?!

    • @Hangetsuu
      @Hangetsuu 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      zachdesoto What you could do is rejoice in that we are going to increasingly depend on computers, where being left/right handed is not as much of an issue! There is probably nothing you can do except either learn to write right-handedly, or get used to the discomfort of the 'correct' way, or adjust somehow so it looks nice while doing it the 'wrong' way, or get everyone else to write using a new left-handed alphabet, from right to left. Either way you're looking at a lot of time/practice. Years. Patience.

    Helpful. I'm supposed to be left handed, but was taught right handed because in school I couldn't spell my surname, and the teacher helped by guiding my hand - and since she is right handed I learnt that way too. It's only logical to correct that mistake. Maybe I'll actually write neater!

    My writing with my natural hand is inconsistent because I can't see the shape or size of the letter I previously wrote. When I use my right hand; despite not usually doing so, I actually have better handwriting, but I can't write as fast because my right hand doesn't have muscle-memory for the letters...
    Guess my only option is to build it up...

    I'm 58( embedded sw/hw eng) and had these issues all along. I smear and and find starting at the left side of a note book uncomfortable. I often take notes in columns starting on the right side and new columns added toward the left open area. Weird. For anti smearing I have worn thin cotton gloves with the fingers cut off.

    I write with a very heavy back-slant. It's the only way I can get any speed, other than mirror writing. I don't have a problem reading mirror writing, but that isn't the point, it's the other 90% who don't like it.

    • @ZimVader-0017

      Leftie here. Nope, at least not the way she demonstrates. I use some sort of modified version of it where the middle finger is actually curved under the palm and I somehow end up holding the pen/pencil with only the thumb and forefinger. In addition, instead of leaving a huge gap between my fingers and the tip of the pencil, my fingers are very close to the tip, otherwise I fell like the pecil will go flying out of my hand.
