As a lefty under-writer, I find that the classic tripod grip with the elongated/relaxed finger puts my pen at a terrible angle. It digs the point right into the paper. My adaptation has always been a more curled grip with the pen resting on the ring finger. Might not work for everyone but it works for me!
@@laurenamber3709 I've had a LOT of pain in my index finger lately because I've been holding every muscle tighter because everything is stressful. It sucks. I'm trying to relax but it's not easy!
thank you so much, i used to hold my pen on my ring finger, and it even created a bruise because I really forced the ink out of it. This really helped because today I had a huge test and thankfully my finger didnt hurt as bad.
Something that we should do here is teach kids how to write neatly. My father and uncle were taught how to do it in their homeland and I'm over here struggling on every letter so that it looks nice.
I’m glad you mentioned about the shakiness. I thought it was just me :) I’m trying to adjust my grip and sometimes it feels like a pen just flies off the page lol I have to really concentrate on relaxation… I realize a big part of my problem in my grip has been holding it too tight since I was a little kid (which is an extremely long time ago). All through grade school and university I always had a big bump on the first knuckle of my middle finger from the pressure applied there. Interestingly, the stress from the grip translates itself to my wrist which is where I get my pain. Thanks, not only for the tips, but being an understanding “teacher“, readily recognizing what are the challenges, and how to overcome them.
Omg thank you very much! I always have pain in my middle finger then it swells alot. I really love this channel your one my favourite youtubers already😍 thank youuu!!!!!
I write with a really intense grip and when I use a relaxed grip my writing is a lot lighter is there a way to have a relaxed grip and still write letters with a darker shade?
You're going to need to grip a little tighter to write darker, but that doesn't mean you need to squeeze the pen. Start practicing writing at the shade you want, but trying to use the lightest grip you can to apply that shade.
there is a difference between the finger muscles gripping the pen and the wrist muscles used to push the pen down on the paper. I don't have pain when I write and I like bold font handwriting. So grip the pen just enough with your fingers but keep it relaxed. Now keep this pen grip forever. What you need to test out now is how much downward force your wrist needs to apply to the paper. Don't overexert, just right is enough and perfect.
I know I'm extremely late, but the thing to address this is to get a mechanical pencil and order either B or 2B lead refills for it. They're softer than the HB lead that comes in pencils by default, and this means that the lead will transfer onto the paper with less effort, leaving darker lines without requiring harder pushing. Get either Pentel Ain or Pilot Neox lead. Ain smears less, Neox is smoother and darker (a bit less rough). B is softer than HB, and 2B is softer than B. I would probably say to go for 2B and then dial it back to B if it's too smeary, but even B lead is significantly better than HB in my opinion. The lead that comes in pencils is honestly trash
My problem isn't really my hand hurting, it's my finger. The way I hold my pen to draw is similar to the one you showed except the pen is resting on the middle part of my middle finger. Or to be more specific, right beneath the distal phalanges and at the top of the middle phalanges. I unconsciously press too hard sometimes and my skin get's sore and occasionally bruised. My skin isn't very tough and I have to press the pen down hard to get the right density for my sketches(I draw digitally). I've tried other ways of sketching and so far I haven't found any that I like and don't get frustrated with.
Many drawing tablets come with software to change the pressure required when using the digital pen. For example, my XP-PEN tablet has a setting in its software called, "Hardness." I can move the slider in several graduations between "Soft" and "Hard." If your drawing tablet has such an option, I recommend sliding it towards "Soft," so less pressure will be required.
@@IdontknooooowO_O I've managed to get my hand to be comfortable in a different position where it's isn't resting on my finger, I usually switch in between these two. I don't write as much as I draw so my new position might not be the greatest for writing. Basically I just use the tips of my thumb, pointer and middle finger to hold the pencil. It took a while to get use to but it has helped me greatly.
Thank you for this! I knew that I've always held a pen correctly, so I didn't know why writing fatigues and hurts my hand so much! I am tense in general, so it makes sense that this was my problem, but I never noticed it before, so thank you! I tried writing with a relaxed hand and I noticed that when my hand would tense up again, my shoulder got tense too. I will be working on this now.
I've always held the tripod abnormally. My middle finger doesn't rest under the pen. Instead it sort of presses against the side of the pen. It's weird, but I'm gonna try the "right" way and see if it benefits me or not. My writing has always been sloppy and I'd like to improve. Thanks for this vid!
I hold it the exact same way, it feels like I need something to press against the pen for my writing to be normal otherwise I can’t write properly, so I can’t do the tripod grip properly
My pencil grip is very weird and I definitely have the hard grip problem. In my case it causes the first knuckle of my thumb to bend inwards, concave. It looks very unnatural, puts so much pressure on the knuckle, and hurts after just a couple paragraphs. It's been so frustrating trying to re-learn my grip, especially since I'm an artist and use the same grip for all my drawing coordination. I'm going to start trying practice exercises to completely relearn it. Up until now I thought it was impossible to fix.
thx i was holding my pen and pencil like a mass and now i understood how to hold it and write with it and now i dont have any pain and my letters are way better thx for teaching me
it tried to write one page with this method ,what actually is 1.set your mind to your content rather than writings and fonts 2. get medium thickness pen with rubber grip 3.make your hand totally dry for more natural friction 4.use some techniques like shown in vid. before this i get pain in my shoulder very very quick like after 2,3 lines and after, i write whole paper with barely any pain ,writings look average but that writing is your real writing ,worked for me
With the way I write I ended up having a bump on my ring finger cause I hold it tightly and I hate it. And with the way you showed us to write the first time is a very much better way and thank you for that. I really appreciate this video.
It has to do with the fact that we have always been used to writing with a pencil. Back in the day, when writing with a number two pencil, you had to really dig in for the writing to be coherent.
Thankyou. You can also try just applying the amount of pressure weight the writing utensil weighs. I found this to be better for me while holding a pickelball paddle.
THANK YOU SO SO MUCH. I was struggling so hard to write lately and my hand was shaking due to the pain in my wrist. I hold the pen the same way I do when I draw, so my pinky scrapes against the paper and it hurts after a while. doesn't help that when I'm signing documents or filling out forms, there's the additional pressure to not make a mistake and then the shaking gets worse because the nervousness makes me grip even harder! It's so frustrating! I think these days, because we type more than we write, handwriting issues have becomes less of an issue. It's not untill I'm forced to write whole paragraphs of text by hand that I notice this is a big problem and I really need to fix it or else I literally can't write anything longer than a sentence or two by hand. After I tried the "textbook posture" my pinky no longer scrapes against the paper and it felt really weird at first, but the pain is reduced by like a whole 3/4 and I was able to write like 3 pages by hand without shaking or jittering. I could barely believe it. ten minutes and I was able to get used to the new pen-holding posture. This is such a life-saver! I thought I was just going to have to deal with wrist pain and shaking my whole life! I'll continue to practice this posture until my hand automatically goes to it when I pick up a pen. When I'm not deliberately using the tripod posture, I revert back to my habitual posture. You have no idea how big of a difference this made for me. I was filling out i9 and handwriting so much text a few days ago due to new job and I was so close to tears because the shaking and pain keeps coming back so fast. It was exhausting!! This is probably something a lot of people experience but don't openly talk about so I'm so glad you made this video and shared it.
Hello. Hey dude ! Thanks a lot. Now I can write my homeworks and other works very smoothly. Earlier it used to start paining only from 5 mins of writing and now after mere 40 mins or more. I thought this problem only persisted with me, but thanks for relaxing me. The tight writing always proved to be a curse. You also explained very nicely. Thanks a lot again ! I'm very happy now
Just started writing with the tail of the pen on knuckle instead of near palm and although i'm less precise I feel like I could write for hours without pain thanks !
i was writing for ever 6 hours yesterday in preperation for my exams and ive had pain ever since last night. it was a struggle to write an exam today with a sore arm
Ive gripped my writing utensils too hard since i was a kid. I would ALWAYS break my crayons and it was so frustrating. I'm a writer now at 26yo who adores handwriting but the pain i experience is ridiculous. Im watching this video to help undo that habit. Thanks for teaching us!
For being more precise without holding the pen more tightly, one thing I've learned while drawing straight lines and underlining text is that I need to look ahead at where I want the line to go more than try and focus on the spot my pen is at and trying to force the movement to stay "straight" from there. Looking ahead at where I want the line to go might generally help with less exhausting precision.
I’m in my 30s & have always held the pen wrong. I was never corrected as a child. I do have hand pain & a callus on my middle finger. However when I try the correct grip, I have no control over the pen. It’s so shaky and I can’t get it to feel comfortable. I’m determined to correct this because I use my hands a lot & am tired of the pain. Am I just not practicing enough? I have tried on and off through my life and never got it to feel natural. Does it just take a long time to fix? Please let me know how you’d advise someone who’s older on how to change their grip… thank you!
Write for 30 minutes a day for 2 weeks straight, I think you’ll see it’s very possible after that. You might even be completely adjusted to the new grip by then. And yes, your handwriting will be terrible while your adjust.
Thx for following up with me, I will try to make time to practice. I have to write a lot at my job as it involves a lot of paperwork, so I’ll still have to use the incorrect grip the majority of the time, though, because I can’t write legibly with the correct grip..

Mine is sweaty palm.. as the sweats starts coming the grip between hand n pen lessens so inorder to get better hold of pen I need to tighten my grip n thus my hand starts to Hut..
The way that I hold my pencil is I put my thumb over my pointer finger and gripping tight , I’ve been holding it like that ever since I was old enough to write and my mom said that my writing is bad . I’ve been trying to write with the proper way but since I grip my pencil tight it’s hard to adjust and my writings are always squiggly .
As a retired high school teacher it does make a difference how you hold a writing utensil. Incorrectly held tools lead to illegible penmanship and hand fatigue. In the meantime the rest of the class is waiting for these folks to finish taking notes. The entire class is slowed down. Seems there’s a lot for elementary schools to get right and stop not bothering.
great video thanks. I seem to have alot of pain in my forearm hand and fingers when I write. Why would that be? I have been trying to write left handed for a break for my right side but it's not as good and people notice that it is not as good. Are there any exercises you do to build strength in your writing arm so it could be easier to write ?
I don't know of any exercises, outside of writing more. But if you are writing in a way that is causing injury, then writing more isn't going to help. If your muscles are just getting tired, then writing more should help as it will strengthen those muscles. If you could send me a video of your normal writing that is causing pain, I might be able to see what you're doing wrong.
Iv been holding My pencil with my middle ,ring and thumb finger for as long as I can remember . I tried to change it but ended up have pain . Well I want to change it now since I know it's not right . Thanks for the video
Ever since I was little, I held my pen between my pinky and wedding ring finger. I draw illustrations of people now and write calligraphy with the technique I taught myself. I can't however hold the pen properly, unless I use my left hand to do it. But doing that.. I can backwards calligraphy and mirror my illustrations.
My dad writes with the tripod grip. eventually the area where the pen rests (on the middle finger) swelled. And it never healed. So I don't know if it's really the right way but as he said its all about putting little pressure.
i dont grip it strong at the pencil. for some reason all the tension is at my ring and pinky side of my hand. maybe im tensing anchoring my hand to the paper? i also have tension in my wrist but thats not really surprising does having a thicker pencil help at all?
Thicker pencil doesn't really help unless you have some condition that makes it painful for you to holder your fingers close together. You simply have to let the quality of your handwriting suffer while you write with less tension. It's very uncomfortable, but pretty straightforward.
Yes it is typical to rest your wrist and hand on the table. It’s very rare for people to write with their wrist off the table. I teach that method in some of my other videos and it takes a lot of practice to make it work.
Usually a NEW PEN ,you know, starts on rough so i put more pressure, also grip it more tightly, to write better...but overtime it becomes smooth and i continue to write that way...
I had a very firm hrip on my pen before, and i know it is ineffective because after just 15 minutes i get tired with writing easily. When i was in 6th grade i searched what is the proper pen hold and they said the tripod method, when i first tried it my writing looks like a wreck. But now i am getting used to it (grade 11) but my main concern is that my thumb pressed down to the tip of my pointer which hurts like hell. How do i resolve this?
I never liked to draw as a kid and my real day to day usage of pen/pencil started in the elementary school where they tought the tri-finger hold technic. So I picked it up and started using it right away, the writing was not comfortable (I remember it clearly) my letters were big, ugly and it was frustrating, but I never had any issues with the grip itself, it felt natural at least that's how I remeber it.
This is common. My guess would be that you either have a higher standard for japanese symbols or they are more difficult for you as a writer. There's something in you that is saying, "try harder", when writing japanese symbols and is causing you to lose track of your grip. Like I suggested in the video, I would set aside some practice time where you write japanese symbols and your sole objective is to maintain a proper grip. During this time, success is measured by your maintenance of the grip, not by the forms of the symbols which will undoubtedly suffer until the grip becomes completely natural.
My guess is that excessive tension is a common cause of pain while writing. The other major cause would be the use of the muscles in the hand and fingers to write, which is unavoidable unless you learn to write with your arm.
@@PerfectBiscuits oh, I tried this all day and my handwriting is getting slowly better in this way. But when I rest my pencil on my middle finger, it hurts and almost seems like there is a "dent"..... is this because I am holding the pencil wrong, or because I'm new to this way?
@@ZetaMotions If the pencil is leaving a significant indentation in your finger and there is pain associated it with that, you are likely applying too much pressure with your grip.

My handwriting and English language is too much good
I love it 😍😍😙😙
As a lefty under-writer, I find that the classic tripod grip with the elongated/relaxed finger puts my pen at a terrible angle. It digs the point right into the paper. My adaptation has always been a more curled grip with the pen resting on the ring finger. Might not work for everyone but it works for me!
As long as it works and it doesn't hurt, you're good!
I do that too! However, i grip wayy too tight and i get pain within 5 minutes of writing!!!! AND exams are soon... HELP!!
@@laurenamber3709 I've had a LOT of pain in my index finger lately because I've been holding every muscle tighter because everything is stressful. It sucks. I'm trying to relax but it's not easy!
I'm left handed too. And the grip which he described is wonderful.
thank you so much, i used to hold my pen on my ring finger, and it even created a bruise because I really forced the ink out of it.
I thought it was just me :) I’m trying to adjust my grip and sometimes it feels like a pen just flies off the page lol
I have to really concentrate on relaxation… I realize a big part of my problem in my grip has been holding it too tight since I was a little kid (which is an extremely long time ago).
You're welcome! Thanks for watching and leaving your thoughts.
Omg same issue with me !! 😨😨 Either I write with stress or pen flies on paper
I needed this because i have been using the pencile and pen wrong and it starts to slowly scrape off the skin from my nails.
I will be working on this now.
i thought it’s just me who has pain from writing, thx god it’s not just me
I've always held the tripod abnormally.
I do the same my fingers bend as well
Thank you for this. I watched your videos in the past and this was a great video to come back to in order for me to freshen up my technique :)
This is the most useful handwriting video I’ve seen. Even though it seems obvious, I never really thought about it as the main issue. Thanks!
thank you! trying to get back into journaling and this video helped me with my wrist pain. God bless you
I leave a comment here, so in future i would remember that i learn neat writing from this channel
Up until now I thought it was impossible to fix.
thx i was holding my pen and pencil like a mass and now i understood how to hold it and write with it and now i dont have any pain and my letters are way better thx for teaching me
This actually helped because my problem was the right grip. My index finger DIP joint was hyperextended and I hadn't noticed it till now.
it tried to write one page with this method ,what actually is
1.set your mind to your content rather than writings and fonts
2. get medium thickness pen with rubber grip
3.make your hand totally dry for more natural friction
4.use some techniques like shown in vid.
before this i get pain in my shoulder very very quick like after 2,3 lines and after, i write whole paper with barely any pain ,writings look average but that writing is your real writing ,worked for me
With the way I write I ended up having a bump on my ring finger cause I hold it tightly and I hate it. And with the way you showed us to write the first time is a very much better way and thank you for that. I really appreciate this video.
Been wanting to know if I'm holding my pen right.
The try pod grip helped my handwriting alot
I am used to writing with 4 fingers, should I try to learn to write with 3 fingers?
Awesome video with spectacular tips and tricks
For being more precise without holding the pen more tightly, one thing I've learned while drawing straight lines and underlining text is that I need to look ahead at where I want the line to go more than try and focus on the spot my pen is at and trying to force the movement to stay "straight" from there. Looking ahead at where I want the line to go might generally help with less exhausting precision.
anyone know if there are finger gloves for a small callus on the finger from excessive writing?
A Parker Jotter, a man of culture I see! Just got mine in the mail today :) so happy that I searched for a tutorial to learn how to better grip such a tapered-bodied yet beautifully crafted steel pen, and voilà, I stumbled upon this one~
Mine is sweaty palm.. as the sweats starts coming the grip between hand n pen lessens so inorder to get better hold of pen I need to tighten my grip n thus my hand starts to Hut..
This was helpful, thank you!
Fantastic hands!
I have the same problem, did you mange to get your pen grip better?
Such great news. Keep it up, David.

The tripod grip is way too uncomfortable on the middle finger even with a light grip
Such great insight David. Thank you!
great video thanks.

So I don't know if it's really the right way but as he said its all about putting little pressure.
i dont grip it strong at the pencil. for some reason all the tension is at my ring and pinky side of my hand. maybe im tensing anchoring my hand to the paper? i also have tension in my wrist but thats not really surprising
does having a thicker pencil help at all?
Thicker pencil doesn't really help unless you have some condition that makes it painful for you to holder your fingers close together. You simply have to let the quality of your handwriting suffer while you write with less tension. It's very uncomfortable, but pretty straightforward.
In that thumbnail, you're holding using the D'nealian grasp and I thought for sure you were gonna punk me. XD
Great vid, Dave!
Haha just changed the thumbnail!
i am using this tri pod method from my childhood but my handwriting isn't legible what should i do
I hold it like the tripod way but stick the pencil between the pointer and middle finger but I tend to hold it tightly.
Sir is there a solution to the pain caused by a lateral quadrupod grip in which I was trained?? Please help
Yes, everything I discuss in the video besides the tripod grips applies the same.
Bro I cannot believe im 15 and searching for tutorials five days before school starts becuase LAST YEAR my hand suffered
Is it typical to rest your wrist on the table top? I have seen people that don't and I have tried that but my handwriting looks bad when I tried that.
Yes it is typical to rest your wrist and hand on the table. It’s very rare for people to write with their wrist off the table. I teach that method in some of my other videos and it takes a lot of practice to make it work.
Does this apply to drawing too????!!
Yea, pretty much. If you are death gripping the pen your hand is going to hurt after a while regardless of what you’re doing.
Thanks i have a lot of homework.
Remind me next year thanks
You might not get a next year.
@@PerfectBiscuits why
I never liked to draw as a kid and my real day to day usage of pen/pencil started in the elementary school where they tought the tri-finger hold technic. So I picked it up and started using it right away, the writing was not comfortable (I remember it clearly) my letters were big, ugly and it was frustrating, but I never had any issues with the grip itself, it felt natural at least that's how I remeber it.
the thing is, this is only working for me on writing the alphabet, but when i start writing japanese symbols it starts slipping off
This is common.
Thanks, brother. Very helpful video for applying in own life.
What is the name of this pen?
I'm having to relearn now my thumb hurts with suspected arthritis. Got to keep my thumb straight.
Thank you sir☺️
I actually almost forgot how to write after the quarantine 🙄
And your video is of great help😘
I have a question.. does pressing down on your paper and writing super.... idk the word for it. But yea, is that the cause of hand pain?
