- Instructional video on how to properly hold the pencil or pen for right-handers. Iris Hatfield, author of the New American Cursive Penmanship Program explains how the paper position is also very important for good pemmanship. www.NewAmericanCursive.com
Now i know I've been holding my pencil wrong all this time, I guess that's why i have a bump on my finger lol
Shanelle H that's why I'm here
Tae Infires Me RIGHT SAME WITH ME!!!
Oh my God I thought I was the only one who has a bump on there finger
i don't have a bump but i know i hold it wrong 😭😭😭
I apparently have a righters bump, but when I ask TEACHERS they say nothing is wrong with the position.
Lord have mercy! I just tried it just like you said and wrote flawlessly!! I'm so used to writing fast and having a death grip on my pen, lol. Thank you!
I also have a "death grip" (really tight, too much pressure, closed web space...) and, although I can't write very fast, my handwriting is neat. I can't write the correct way for the life of me. It's just not stable enough and I don't have enough control.
I'm 27 years old and you taught me something new!! Thanks
Are you 33 now
Ive been holding it with my foot the whole time.

Lmao 😂 😂 😂
Lmao
My man!
Same!
Thank you for posting this, I am a post grad University student and I have always criticized myself for my terrible penmanship. A part of it is that I am lefty that was forced to write with my right, but there was a lot of things in this video about paper positions and how to manage the paper that I had no idea about. I feel like this should have been taught to me in elementary school, and perhaps it was and I just forgot or didn't care because I was a kid. But as an adult this very helpful.
dude, I'm literally in the same boat. I'm in college and I've always been made fun of because of my handwriting, and also I was forced to learn with my right hand even though I'm left dominate
I never thought I'd live to see the day this has to be taught... very good video, clear and to the point. I hope Humanity doesn't lose the ability to write with pen and pencil, it is far too precious.
already has. just peek through the door of any classroom. Middle school especially. I see kids grab the pencil with their fist and write like that. I write extremely fast and get thoughts on the paper in an ok way. they tried to teach us cursive, which is dead. so no one used it, and it permanently screwed up my writing.
Odyssey Mystic Took me about a year to downgrade my handwriting to a messy mass of uneven letters, after an intense period of computer typing. Started using analog writing again and in a few days everything went back to normal. There is hope for us, the Ancient People Who Used Pen and Paper tribe:)
I looked this up to fix my writing cramps but I think I just found an asmr hidden gem
"This video is for right handers, but you can flip your screen vertically if you're left handed"
i've been holding my pencil wrong all these years =( and i'm an artist to xD
I know right😂

After a while my fingers use to hurt , I can’t believe it, this explains a lot.
I'm 20 years old and trying not to further damage my right hand. My fingers and wrist always hurt after writing for 20+ minutes and I feel myself writing too hard. Thank you for your video demonstration of the correct handwriting posture, now I just need practice with this method. 👍
I only watched this video because I was under the impression that I grip my writing instrument incorrectly due to the writers bump I had formed over the years but apparently... this is not true because i have been holding my pen/pencil just like the lady in the video. So it must be that I apply too much pressure when writing.
Why the heck am I watching this as a grown man who is about to finish college?
im 19 it's ok you're not alone
It's call a desire to improve fool
i am 9 xp dont be mean
Jia L. That’s me right now haha I’m 21
I'm 17 you're not alone
You’re teaching is the best
The reason why I looked up this video is because every tine I write my thumb has a huge bumb on it because I push the pencil to hard on my thumb to write hard, so I looked up this video. Lmaoo
I like this lady. I love her voice. I learned how to hold my pen correctly.
"Keep both feet on the floor."
and here I am watching this video sitting on a chair criss-cross....
TempestSora XD XD HAHA NICE ONE 😂
Ok SO YOU WATCH ANIME! 😁ME TOO
This has been teally helpful..
Why did they not teach me this in school?
coz school sucks
Cause apperently schools don't teach out Cursive hand writing anymore, don't know why, but alot of schools seem to have quit.
they teach you how to write cursive letters but not how to hold your hand on the pencil
they don't give a fuck....
segpasta schools don't teach they indoctrinate
Thank you so much for this video. Teaching my 7 year old cursive and he wouldn't listen to my instructions which where the same as the ones in the video. Once he saw someone else doing it then he decided that he would do it that way.
Thank you! I've tried a few different writing positions that are "correct" but this is the only one that doesn't hurt the joints on my pinky. I have very large hands so it really hurts when I write even for a short time because most pens, pencils, etc aren't ergonomical for me, but this helps a ton!
Thank you for providing this extremely nice video , you have saved my life you are so smart , this way feels soooooo gooood and comfortabble , I have been holding my pencil wrong all the time
Will it work if I don't have purple nails?
Felix Tira no
Felix Tira It may cause serious injuries to your fingers and you may not be able to finger yourself again.
ranvids yo your weird af
Sorry I'm visiting your mom tonight 😬
Sp3 M4ri0 Say Hi from me.
Thank you! I always thought that i positioned the paper the wrong way but it is right, the way i grab the pencil is right too, so the only thing i need is to align the left corner of the paper with my left shoulder thanks!
Does anyone ever think about unnecessary things in the middle of the night or in the middle of a study session like "shit, am I holding my pen right" and get on TH-cam to know?
I never paid attention to this and had no idea what's correct until recently, and I'm in my 40s. I was taught the correct way at some point in the beginning, when I was about 5, but never held it correctly since. It was completely accidentally that I even thought about it a few years ago. Someone commented on an awkward grip and I couldn't even tell what was wrong with it, so I googled to see what the correct grip looks like. I was surprised that it didn't even remotely resemble mine, and that's when I realised that I hold a pen incorrectly and started paying attention to how other people do it.
I do a lot of note taking at work. fingers hurt at the end of the day due to holding the pen incorrectly. going to force my self to use this method.
i am 30 and learning how to improve my Realy bad hand writing.. i am even after college and working in career of life but want to change my writing becuse i want to be able to write clearly like everione else. i want to improve my self.
nice, I have been doing practice for it and recently I have got some improvement on my handwriting. thanks very much for share these kinda tricks.
Very nice video and I followed the steps which was taught by this video and it prooved to be correct
Surprisingly I happen to hold it properly. I mostly push with my index finger and I notice after writing more than a page my index finger gets very sore.
Thanks. I was looking for that.
been trying to figure out how to hold a pencil with correct posture and the step at 1:20 finally helped me figure out how to do the grip
Very useful video! I was constantly advised to improve my handwriting like my entire childhood and i worked hard on it, with only marginal improvements. In collage rn, and I've finally made heaps of improvement by changing my grip!
your video is a boon to me.thank you so much .It is really working
I have this bad habbit of putting the paper at an angle towards my right hand.
Oh my gosh YES!
I thought I was the only one.. even tho it's 2 years late feels good to know I'm not alone :O
I thought i was the only one who has this
People who write well and do calligraphy slant the page (we were taught to in early school) and I taught my kids this also... So the top right tip of the page is much higher (up to 45 degrees)
i am so happy to correct my mistakes form now ... this video helped me a lot
I have this bump on my finger and I have decided to finally learn how to hold a pencil correctly
I love how everyone calls this a bump 😂. It’s called a callus. Layers of skin builds up in order to protect it.
@@sweetdude1221 Any ideas on how to get rid of it? I've had mine for like 2 years and it feels like a bone but with extra skin
i'm trying to change the way i hold pencils (graphite gets all over the side of my hand even though I use my right not left), and my handwriting is much worse now because i haven't gotten used to this method but i'm hoping it will get better as i re-train my muscle memory lol thanks
I'm sorry- that circle thing is a bit of an overzealous statement. I hold my pencil in different ways depending on what I feel like that day and I can draw slightly bigger circles with my thumb over my index finger. 2:10
Thanks for posting this video, it has helped me stay comfortable for long periods of time when writing.
Thanks bro, it was helpful
thank you so much really helpful ☺
I just looked this up because the way I hold a pencil gets extremely uncomfortable and hurts after a while.
thank you, much needed video! I was taught this at school.
I just looked this up to stop myself from digging my nails into my index finger which increased the fatigue in my writing experience
Wow, Thank you so much
Thank you for the advice i love it and now i can write extreamly neat for my essays and my professer is impressed
Mam what about the remaining two fingers??Should they be pushed backward???
Hoping an immediate response
very helpful tips , especially the first part .
thank you for this beautiful and amazing tips.
And i have got another query. my handwriting is good when i start writing but as i write in larger volume, it deteriorates drastically. how can i solve this problem??
focus!~
writing has always been very painful for me. my hand cramps up. I just did tested this grip and it helps. I think that I write with no finger flexion, I just grip the pen/pencil and use mostly my wrist when writing. Dynamically contracting the fingers as I write, as per the instructions of this video, seemed let me write longer without muscles cramping.
Same here, my grip is very static and I move the whole hand rather than individual fingers. I control the movements with my wrist. My fingers just hold the pen tightly in a death grip.
Thanks mam it was helpful
Does this work for pens?
Much respect, thank you for this help.
For pens, I *have* to hold it near the tip. The ink doesn't come out consistently if I'm even a centimeter away. Is this the same with you all, or am I just weird?
Thank you very much, Madam.
This helped me so much thx
My brother told me once that the correct position is by resting the pencil on the middle finger, and putting the index finger above the pencil while the thumb press the index finger (mentions in the video.
I used to go to Philippines and I've elementary students using the wrong position what my brother have told me.And even my cousin who is a girl is using the wrong position too.
Thanks for the positions and some tips.
Wow , my whole life I been writing ✍️ wrong. It felt strange but I can’t believe I writing so much neater. Nobody in school bother to tell me hey can I see how you write?
Very useful thanks! Xx
so much helpfull
I've been trying to learn to write like this for months and I just can't. It's like I have zero control over my writing when I try to hold it like this. Anyone have any other tips?
Same here. I don't even bother trying to write like that, because what you produce on paper is much more important than the aesthetic appeal of your hand. So, my tip is that you should write the way it is the most comfortable for you.
Omg I'm starting to wright really good now thank you so much😄
+Chris Romero next stop, spelling!
yes I uses three fingers it seem to be alright but I notice I get more consistency with two fingers
thank you i am dyslexic and never got guided my hand positioning was horrible and sooner or later started to damage my hand thank you for this
I've used a different grip all my life. Searched for this because I intend on learning to draw and I think this grip will make that easier. However, I'm still going to use my traditional grip for writing.
Thank you!
Damn I’ve been writing and drawing with 3 fingers for too long. Thank you !
I write with my thumb on the middle of the pencil wrapped around on top of my index finger which is also bent and my middle finger is at the bottom.
Me too...and I write just fine and can do much bigger circles than what she is doing. haha With her method...I can hardly write. For me, it's what works for the individual.
I have a little bump on my finger because I write a lot like this,
But I also draw a lot and so I move my entire arm as well so it doesn’t work with the said restriction
Thanks a lot for this video.🙏
Is there only one "right" way to hold a pencil? I would assume it's pretty personal, and you do what works best for you? I rest it on my ring finger, and I'm complimented on my handwriting skills quite often. I don't feel like the pencils mobility is restricted by my position.
Same here! I just hate when I smudge my paper!
I did too, but my hand would cramp a lot .. and people did like my handwriting but it's actually way easier to do it the way she's saying once you get the hang of it .. I'm still trying to get a hang on it but it hurts my hand way less now
Apparently, only one way is correct, but that doesn't mean you can't hold it any other way if it works better for you.
Edit: Some sites say that there are four correct ways: dynamic tripod, dynamic quadrupod, lateral tripod and lateral quadrupod. I don't think mine satisfies the definition of correctness even by those standards, but I guess it's the closest to some weird version of lateral tripod, so let's try to squeeze it into the list of correct grips :)
Almost! I still sometimes find my self reverting to my old way of holding a pen when i am in a hurry, but yes most of the time I now hold my pen correctly :)
Thank you ma’ am! 📝
Omg thank you!! This helped so much 🙏🏾
That's really helpful! Thanks a lot :)
I found your video via Secret Smart Scripter - there's plenty more good videos there that will help out
i don't bend my thumb when i write.
Au sujet de la tenue du crayon, la démonstration qui est faite montre exactement l'inverse des conclusions qui en sont tirées (les conclusions sont : le crayon est tenu entre le pouce et l'index)
- le crayon est tenu entre la pulpe du pouce et la face latérale de la dernière articulation du majeur, sinon le crayon tomberait lorsqu'elle lève l'index (voir 0:59 au chrono de la vidéo) ;
- on le voit bien aussi à 1:30 lorsqu'elle montre, avec son index de la main gauche, la position du crayon dans sa main droite : l'index censé tenir le crayon n'est pas en face du pouce ;
- lorsqu'elle trace un rond en disant qu'il est possible à cause de la position des doigts, elle le trace d'un mouvement du poignet et non d'un mouvement des doigts, donc le discours n'est pas en relation avec l'image ;
Great video!!
Thankyou for this. I get writer's cramp fairly quickly, and I think it's because I've always held my pen in a weird way.
it was very helpful to me. my handwriting has improved. thank you!
Thank you
I like this lady.
thanks for this
It's such a shame that in school the proper position isn't taught to the students. Just this year, in the "terza superiore", Italian class for 17 yrs old students, my teacher told me I was writing the wrong way...
Btw, I'm not here because I still haven't learned it, but because I was searching for totally different stuff and misclicked 😂
Love it
i feel pain in my index finger when writing ,can somebody please tell how to stop this happening? have i been writing wrongly?
Thxx it worked for me =)
Which hand do you use when writing?
I have to ask, did you eventually get used to it?
Nice thanks
My middle finger usually becomes irritated and burns from the pencil resting and rubbing against it, i use grips sometimes for doing it this same way but it's still uncomfortable so i alternate which fingers it rests on but still my hand gets very tired pencils are too thin ,my fingers long and my hand big.
edit from previus comment thuis vidio really helped
omg her voice is soothing.
Why didn't anyone teach me in primary school? Many a time I couldn't finish all questions because I was slow in writing.
Good handwriting was removed from curriculum in 2012 along with a lot of other things to make room for teaching a lot of other other things.
Ha I knew it, my mom did teach me the wrong way of holding a pencil. She would scream at me for holding it "wrong."
Thanks
This is the best way to hold a pen/pencil. However, she failed to mention that the index finger also allows to regulate (put more or less) pressure as needed. All parents and teachers should teach children to hold the pencil properly. However, you see teachers, and other adults, holding the pen in the bottom of the "crease" between the thumb and the index fingers.
Thanks mam
