I was blessed with a left-handed kindergarten teacher, who recognized my left-handedness early on. Whenever we were doing writing-type exercises like coloring, she would always remind me to "mirror image" the right-handed kids. Thus I learned early on to keep my wrist straight, position my paper with the lower RH corner facing my tummy, and to write "downhill, " which made it easy to see what I was writing. We all were taught the "tripod" grip, too. Fast forward 30 years and I'm blessed with a left-handed son - who I taught what Mrs Dion taught me so many years ago. Fast forward another 20 years, and now Grandpa is teaching his left-handed granddaughter the same techniques. Thank you, Mrs. Dion!!
My dad was left handed and only one of his 8 children is left handed. Unfortunately it was in that push to force everyone to perform right handedly. He is pretty ambidextrous now(in his 50's.)
Hi my child is 3 and 6 months before sending him to daycare he ate with his left hand painted colored and threw his baseballs with his left hand. I told the childcare that I believe he's left handed. They're teaching him with his right hand.
I got a call from my daughters school. Saying that she is ameduxuas and want to help "us" understand how to deal with it?? I laughed and said no way. Me too:-), the school was nervous that they could only help her out on the right hand. No teacher were left handed or ameduxuas? Myself and my daughter are helping out her left handed cousin. Good video.
My brother and I are left handed, but our parents are right handed. I hold my pen as a right hander would but turn my paper to a 90 degree angle so the lines are going away from me. It looks a bit odd (so I’m told) but I can see what I’m writing and it doesn’t smudge. I didn’t start doing this until maybe high school, in primary school I always ended up with pencil all over my hand, it was permanently silver! When we progressed to ink it was blue. As for scissors, I can cut alright with 'normal' scissors but I definitely notice the difference if I’m using left handed ones, it just feels easier.
My son also cuts with normal scissors. Later on, I bought him some lefty scissors. They ended up being too small. They have a kiosk/booth for left-handed people in Downtown Disney (now called something else). I keep forgetting to order him some products that are specifically for left-handers. I think he'd really appreciate them!
I'm from Sydney Australia and a left hander, I forced myself to write neatly in high school, with ' old style cursive' it was painful but worth it..my father is a lefty as well
I was so left handed as a kid in the 80s my mother who is left handed was convinced by family teachers ect. that being left handed was a type of disability…so I went through right hand boot camp..I’m so left handed in everything I do except writing/throwing ect..i think it messed me up?
I am right handed and I have wondered about my now 5 year old that he may be left handed and now trying to teach him myself, he can read words but I am struggling getting him to write single letters and don't know how to teach him
I was unable to hold my hand over top of my son's hand because he was left-handed. I did research proper pencil grip to be sure his grip was correct. I have a video on that as well. I highly recommend Handwriting Without Tears and the app called Letter School. I hope this helps!
My twin boys are 2 years old. And they have been drawing alot with those jumbo crayons. And I noticed that both of them were left handed. I am not left handed and neither are their momma. So it must have been from their father. I'm just watching this getting ready and seeing qhat I should do. They start prek in August and will learn to write their names.
I have another video on pencil grip. You should watch that and do some of those activities. Allow them to do gross and fine motor skill practice at home.
I am right handed and my 4 yr old is left handed. His father is also. Out of the 5 kids his dad has, he is the only left handed one. I am trying to teach him to write his name, letters and numbers.
How special! Out of 3 children, my husband only has one left handed son, who is my oldest. I just made sure his pencil grip was ergonomically acceptable by looking what writing experts and occupational therapists said. It's slightly different from mine, but I'm right-handed. We've used Handwriting Without Tears, and I've been very pleased with it! He's 11 now and can write quite neatly when he wants to. When he doesn't want to, it's still quite legible. :)
Hi! Yes, it was a bit strange, but overall my lefty was easier to teach than my other right-handed child. I think that was just a personality difference in them.
My son will be 5 this week and I believe he is left handed. He does everything left handed and the older he gets the more noticeably dominant his left hand becomes. He is learning how to read and doing great, and also he is great with math! But he struggles with tracing and writing. I occasionally have him switch to the right hand when tracing but it seems just as hard for him. Is it typical for (an almost) 5 year old boy to struggle with handwriting? I guess I’m wondering if it’s his age or the fact that he is left handed. He freehand draws circles, squares, triangles, a basic house, and a stick person with his left hand. And easily writes his name with left hand (although it is still sloppy).
I would keep things consistent with the hand he writes with. Do lots of hands on activities: paper cutting, play doh, etc. Be sure his pencil grip is appropriate per Occupational Therapists. There are triangular crayons you can get. There are half sized crayons you can get. However, 5 year old boys are not known for being particularly neat handwriters just yet. I think that is normal. I used Handwriting Without Tears and Letter School App for my children. I have videos on those topics as well. I would encourage you to check those out also. Best of luck!
Did this woman just seriously say that she was actually thinking of trying to encourage her left handed child to become right handed?? In this day and age people still do this??? I thought this was something that happened in the 50s and perhaps in the 60s but NOW?? For shame. I'm the only left handed person in my very large family both from my mom's and my dad's side in terms of my parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins, and the only other lefty my mom can think of was my great grandfather who was born in 1889 - even he was never taught to write with his non-dominant hand and stayed a lefty for the rest of his life. I was born in 1971 and my grandmother had indeed told my mother that perhaps she should try to make me use the right instead, but my mom said absolutely not, if she is a lefty then that is what she is. Thanks, mom!!
To which woman are you referring? My video does not endorse forcing one's child to change their "handedness." My oldest son is a lefty, as is my husband. :)
Both my parents are lefthanded (i am too), teaching my righthanded brother to do basic things was infuriating To be fair, Only my mum has legable handwriting
I used to think messy handwriting came with being a lefty until I had a left handed teacher in 7th grade. She wrote neatly and in cursive on the chalkboard!
Both my parents and all my family’s generation is right handed and I’m left handed so my parents always told me “being a leftie is the bestie” 😂😂and the told me thst being left handed means your special since 10-12% of the world population is left handed
I have a video on pencil grip. There are some ideas of things you can try before learning to write that can help. If it's something serious, you might try seeking the services of an occupational therapist. Best wishes!
my parents was not lefties. but I was a lefty. and they change me to righty. i am 13 years old. in class, my handwriting is the worst handwriting and I can right fastly with my right hand. but now can't also write correctly with my left hand. what should I do to come back to left hand? please help😢😢
It sounds like this is an important goal to you, I would try some exercises with both of your hands to strengthen your control. It could be cutting paper, stringing beads. If there is a hand you feel like you could more comfortably write with, try using evenings or weekends to practice. All you need is paper and pencil! Handwriting without Tears has an excellent way of showing in what direction you should form your letters. beard.cps.edu/31720/weis-lowercaseformations.pdf. That is the link. Read the sayings. Learn those first with whichever hand you choose. I know a kid who lost his arm at age 5 and had to relearn everything all over again. IT IS POSSIBLE. You might be slow at first, but keep a notebook for yourself to practice in. Copy letters at first. once you're satisfied with that, move on to copy parts of a book and then try to get faster. REMEMBER, if you skip lines and space properly, it's easier to read what you have written, even if it's a little messy. I have a video about pencil grip also you may want to check out. Good luck!
Yes, you can! My child did fine with right handed scissors, but had I known back then, I would have bought the lefty scissors. I did buy some, but they were too small for him (he was already 11). I tried using them, and they didn't work for me. So, they probably WILL for a left handed person. It should make a difference!
My baby also have same problem 🥺 he s 4 and he is having a problem to cutting paper and writing , but he can read whenever I invite him to write he s not interested and he says he s tierd to write 😭
@@sweetsweet6787 Think of the non-cutting things he can try with his hand to strengthen it (play-dough, for example) and work on that for a while. When you try cutting again, have him cut play dough at first (my kids love doing that) and then something harder like index cards/cardstock before moving to paper or anything difficult to follow the lines with.
I’m not seeing the OT link you mentioned in the comments. Surprisingly I NOR my husband are left handed but we have a PURE lefty, through and through in our youngest (almost 4). Our middle daughter had lefty tendencies, but ended up using her right hand for writing. Funny thing...her grip is the Ed in like lefties tend to be! I was NEVER able to train her out of it. He always wrote right handed, but golfed left handed, bowled left handed, threw a ball right handed but batted left handed. LOVE IT! I’m assuming they got this left-handedness from my dad?
Hey. How are you? It's probably years later dunno if you'll see this. But you mentioned your kid had leftie tendencies but turned out to be right handed. What tendencies were this and at what age did you figure out he was left handed? I have a 19 months old who for a while used his left hands like 70% of the time but then he also uses the right. A few times tries to scribble with right. Dunno why I'm so concerned to know lol anyway it's so I know and prepare early.is itctoo early to tell or I'm just overthinking cos my friends thought he is left handed and can't stop wondering. Hi, my son was forced to draw with his right hand by a teacher when he was smaller, I reprimanded the teacher..however now that he is learning to read and write I noticed he still writes with his right but sees as a left handed child. How do I help him, I was hoping to try the left handed worksheets and hope for the best any advice?
Yes so as my daughter..here we tried make her write with right hand, as she started her own with her left hand and later on we made her practice with right hand. She writes but the line and strokes she is finding difficulty. Curves are OK...unable to deal with it .it s been 6 months now that she s practicing with her right and finding it difficult.
Mam pls help me. I used to write with my right but now when I try to write with my left it feels more comfortable but the handwriting is a bit messy. So which hander am I. Pls reply
Hi! I'm not sure why your left is more comfortable to you now. However, it is possible to learn to write neatly that way. You still need an appropriate grasp on your pencil, but you might need to tilt your page differently. I suggest grabbing some handwriting practice pages and be sure you are forming the letters correctly. People who have lost their writing arm learn to write with the other one. It takes practice and determination and time. It won't be as neat at the other hand at first. :)
