Not only did this movie make me super excited and happy (and scared) while watching, it made every single one of those friends feel the exact same way I did (especially in the last 15 minutes) even though they didn’t know anything about alien or the franchise, convincing them to watch all the other movies, I think that the future is bright for the alien franchise.

As a middle school teacher, one of my students told me they saw this opening night. They are 12 years old. I asked them what they thought and they responded, "The ending scared the crap out of me and I haven't been able to sleep since. I don't know why I thought I could see this in the theater." I’m going to argue it’s not actually a film for kids? The original alien is sci fi suspense horror and what made it so terrifying was the clever way the script was written along with the conservative peekaboo shots. It was also unusual for having a female protagonist which is only revealed towards the end of the film - Ripley was extremely empowering as very few films portray such a strong female character.
It’s a lot more than just a scary film - unfortunately I can’t see that Romulus did anything new but just tried to thread all the films together and include so many references it comes across like a fanfiction

Personally I love that Rook is basically a good guy, until he realizes the mission hasn’t failed.
Like, he’s immediately trying to warn them. Even his initial “attack” is him warning them, but he’s broken. When hooked up to the ship, he can communicate, and immediately tells them everything - including the right thing to do. Genuinely the right thing.
He doesn’t hide that there’s xenomorphs. Doesn’t hide what happens when you get facehugged. Doesn’t lie about the odds of survival. He tells them immediately that the best thing they can do is mercy-kill their friend. He tells them immediately all they can do is run.
His only “villainous” act is telling Andy to kill Navarro - which isn’t so much villainy, as good logic. Killing her is a mercy that would have saved the rest of them.
He only becomes an antagonist once he accesses the computer to check on the goo’s integrity (it was really dumb he had to type it though, he’s literally hooked up to the same system).

When I was in the theatre watching, I also felt like the implantation/birth of Navarro's happened too fast - but when the chestburster came, it's eruption seemed less energetic and more labored. The facehugger part actually bothers me the least. We discussed this after the movie came out. We finally agreed on the theory that, ideally, the facehugger implants, and latches on, keeping the host quiet, contained and safer while the chest buster gestates. If the facehugger is removed, crucially, before it properly latches on,, I’d argue it’s releasing amino acids (or something) to tell the egg to activate it’s quicker gestation emergency option. The fact we’re enjoying talking about it makes it a big recommendation from us, both OG fans.

This is the movie that, in my eyes, justifies Prometheus' existence. Romulus was able to reconcile the lore of Prometheus with the lore of the OG Alien movie. Perfectly.
I also recognized the brief nods to the video game, Alien: Isolation - the save station can be seen in one scene, and the way they had to pump a handle and then press a button to open a door, just like in the game. Not to mention the air vents.
I just hope that they don't drag Fede Alvarez away to make Alien vs Predator movies, because those types of films are going to be really hard to get right. And if his reputation is tarnished by a flop, they might not greenlight a sequel to Romulus with him at the helm.

Or you open the franchise like Prometeus did. Creating endless space for new movies, series and co. with endless oppotunitys to tell each fact of this really cool alien universe. David could have had his own movie, like The Joker for example, kind of psycho thriller and there would be even more space for real horror pictures and a great stories. The life or structure of the WY companie has so much potential for any kind of real thoughful stories. Whats with the engegniers and all the other endless connections ... You get the my point. I agree with you - I wish the bursting were more consistent and the difference of time between Kane waking up and his death and Navarro waking up and her death is insane. But for an attempt to explain, maybe the host’s endocrine profile and metabolism has something to do with it? Kane woke up, minding his business, not a care in the world except getting something to eat and going back into cryo. Navarro woke up in a hellish life or death scenario, with adrenaline and cortisol pumping at max, then full on sprinted back to the ship. Maybe this makes the chestburster mature faster, maybe it spurs it into action like its host by catching some of the adrenaline, maybe that environment makes our bodies uncomfortable or hostile to the chestburster. They are mentioned as being near the lungs in a deleted scene from Alien. Just a thought.

My only true criticism is that the xenomorph doesn't feel like the real antagonistic force, is not a relentless nightmare nor there are many memorable scenes featuring it. There are too many threatening distractions. I think that's a mortal sin since this could re introduce the creature with all the practical effect they did. But I believe this is the cost of making straight up horror with less conceptual subtext.
I knew that Ridley was getting something of this movie when he was featured as a producer. The real question now is if they made a deal with him. One movie to see if people are still interested and maybe he can continue his prequel movies. I hope they don't go full Disney with a nostalgia fueled trilogy.

Finally got a chance to see it, and I must say - it was amazing. If I rank the Alien movies from best to worst, it's this for me: Alien, Aliens, Romulus, Alien 3, Prometheus, Covenant, Resurrection. Andy and Rain were superb, both actors absolutely nailed their roles. The return of Ash (albeit as Rook) was a pleasant surprise and I really felt he fit perfectly into this story. The lo-fi retro-tech aesthetic fit so well with the first two films and the game Isolation. The general pacing, story and action scenes were great. The new alien's birth scene was fittingly shocking.
I agree some of the call-backs were too on the nose and a bit jarring, also there was a bit of that convenient suspension of belief - such as how Rain is warned that her gun only has one mag, yet even when apparently almost empty, it somehow seems to have unlimited ammo. But I can forgive these gripes as they are pretty minor.
All in all, it's not just a worthy addition to the franchise for me, it's one of the best Alien movies to date. As much as I like Alien 3 I have to say Romulus is better. The first two movies are near perfect films, but Romulus is not far from their level. It's so good and I'm so happy we got it.

I saw a channel complaining about Rook being in the film, stating they should have instead used Bishop yet again, bring back Fassbender which would have been crazy expensive and also just raise more questions about Prometheus/ Alien Covenant, or somehow use Call from Alien Resurrection. But from my understanding, she's an android made by other androids and that canonically didn't happen until later in the timeline. Personally I didn't mind seeing Ash/Rook one last time. I doubt they'll use him again as a model and probably will either introduce a new model or maybe give us another Andy or maybe even Working Joes.
I'm just happy we got a very brutal Alien movie that didn't try to be high art like the two prequels, nothing wrong with that but when they get cold feet and can't be bothered to follow through the vision and instead knee jerk react to people who don't have the whole picture. I really wished we could have gotten the actual storyline followed through but I highly doubt we'll ever really get the true follow up to the events of Alien Covenant. So somewhere in the universe, David is just out there doing his thing.

My main qualm with the prequels is that they ruined the mystery of the xenomorph (and the space jockey) by seeming to imply that the Engineers created it. This movie not only corrects that implication, but fills in all the holes in the chronology that the prequels created. In CGI Ian Holm's exposition dump, he mentions that the genetic accelerant (black goo) was sourced from the facehuggers, and that it is the main biological building block of the species. I took this to mean that the Engineers did the same - they did not create the xenomorph, but they worshipped the xeno's perfection and sought to imbue themselves of that perfection. The Engineers, too, derived the black goo from the xenomorphs and experimented upon themselves, in turn creating humanity. This is why the Offspring in the third act of Romulus has the face of an Engineer - it is a full-circle moment, the ultimate culmination of the experiments conducted by both the Company and the Engineers.
The black substance, the "Prometheus strain" as they called it, is the fire of the gods. By tampering with this fire, both the Engineers and humanity meet the same end. I found this a compelling way to complete the themes of the prequels, as well as provide a better explanation as to why the events of the sequels unfold the way they do, such as the mutations in Resurrection. I found that to be poetic and satisfying.
Overall, this movie was a solid 4/5 for me. It would have matched the original Alien and Aliens in excellence if it were not for the CGI Holm and the direct quotes from other movies - I found these elements incredibly distracting, and they could have so easily removed or done differently. The production design, score, and cinematography were top-notch. The character motivations were clear, and my investment in the story was grounded in the two leads. I appreciated that the cast was trimmed down to a few principal players and not overly bogged down by so many extraneous side characters like all the sequels. Even Aliens, which I consider a pretty perfect movie, is filled with one-note characters who exist only to die. I think that's a necessary element for this sort of genre, to an extent.
The movie did an incredible job at establishing the precariousness of humanity. Space is endless and unknowable, and we are not fit to occupy it. No other Alien movie has enforced this theme so wonderfully since the original. From the uncaring capitalist hegemony of Weyland-Yutani shown in the opening act, to the rickety little spaceship ascending to the station - I felt the characters' vulnerability in my bones, metaphorically and literally through the impeccable sound design which had me shaking. I appreciated that they connected that vulnerability back to the pursuit of perfection.

I wish they would make it so that Kay would survive at the end of the movie!
To me, that extra creature and ending duel seemed unnecessary in the movie's purposes for more action, but Kay also went through so much and the actor did so well that I wanted her to make it through the end. She could have even made it through pregnant easily if she didn't take the black goo, and we could have ended it there, but I would at least find the dilemma of what to do with a creature that is technically your child interesting if they wanted to go there. They almost seemed to when "The Offspring" seemed to be putting his down on his mother's bosom, but that idea's probably not a good option. Still, I wished Kay survived. I liked her just a little better than Raine
I'd put the movie between Alien 3 and 4 and the prequels, somewhere in there, similar to Alien Theory. I really like it when first seeing it, but I really now that it has a lot of script and logic problems, even if the acting, visuals, and music are great.

I thought the movie was really strong up until the point Navarro gets facehugged. After that, there's this distinct shift toward fanservice and 'member berries. "Get away from her you b****" made me want to boo in the theater.
As a lifelong Alien fan I can tell this was all conceived for my benefit, but for me its as equally tiresome as The Mandalorian. Take something we love and turn it to key-jangling. Fingers crossed Alien gets something more like Andor.

That’s the first problem, big chap should never have been found in the wreckage of the Nostromo. Firstly he was blown out of the escape shuttle, which at the time of destruction was no where near the Nostromo otherwise it would have been blown away too. When the escape shuttle leaves the Nostromo it travelled backwards away from it as you can see from the shots of the windscreen, so if anything when Ripley blew the alien out of the airlock gravity should have taken it FURTHER away from the Nostromo. Also, the harpoon gun she shoots it with would have melted away not present like it was in Romulus. And that’s just the first of the many plots holes

    • @genotone
      @genotone 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

There was a gap between escaping the nostromo and Ripley prepping for cryo in the shuttle, plausible that the shuttle was orientated differently for where she was attempting to float to. Still I agree, the chances big chap would end up in the nostromo debris field are slim.

It's confusing and I see people on the internet mislabeling it as an Engineer. It's not. I kept thinking they were building up to a Queen reveal only for it to be the black goo. This film kept me on my toes and was just so well done that I have to personally rank the films as follows: 1. Aliens 2. Alien: Romulus 3. Alien 4. Alien 3 then pick all the rest out of a hat because it's irrelevant at that point.
Alien: Romulus is a worthy successor and has breathed new life into the franchise. The people that worked on this film did so well and understand the ethos of the Alien universe that they should be allowed to do another movie with an increased budget.

The initial explosion would have thrown a lot of debries clear, but if trapped in a large enough gravity we'll, IE orbiting around a large planet, the remains would eventually drift back together (orbital mechanics are fun like that), ironically I find it stranger that it exploded three times, once, sure, twice, perhaps the refinery's reactor chained off too... the third time? What was left to explode? Was the Nostromo's FTL drive that volatile maybe? Who knows.
I certainly believe large chunks of the Nostromo would remain, far more likely than say... the Death star, which had a reactor powerful enough to destroy planets, no way that thing wouldn't be atomized by its own explosion

Even though it's just a plot contrivence I have a theory that the reason the xenomorph gestation period is insanely fast in Romulus is directly related to the origin of the facehugger. The facehuggers in Romulus originate directly from the synthesized pathogen as stated by Rook and a screen in the facehugger storage bay that says "printing in process". We've seen in Prometheus and Covenant that the pathogen causes embryos to gestate insanely fast such as the neomorph and praetomorph gestating and maturing in less than a day whereas the xenomorphs in any of the original movies took hours to days to gestate and mature.

One very powerful, smart and scary Xeno hunting them down 1 by 1 and all they can do is hide because there's just no hope until they find some smart way to escape.
I was very hopeful when they pulled out the guns to temporarily scare it off because it's smart enough to threat assess. It reminded me of the flame thrower in Isolation. Sadly they went with gunning down almost every Xeno as they just float there like lemons despite Rook saying 20 minutes earlier that they're so perfect that even gravity is of no consequence to them. Most importantly, l think the character of Andy was the highlight of the film, and the actor who played him was, in his own, very different way, as effective as Fassbender playing both David and Walter. And l had never expected to see such a great performance in any Alien film ever again, but he absolutely delivered. I sincerely hope we'll get a sequel to this, just so l can can get more Andy in my life.
Also, my initial impression of the usage of Ian Holmes' likeness in a new character was that it was extremely well and respectfully done. If his family is happy with it, then so am l.

The story needed some polish and a little less nostalgic play in it to be honest. I enjoyed it but again, some polish is needed. It’s a 7.5 out of ten for me.
That being said, I’m very surprised/impressed this was done for about eighty million dollars.

Agree entirely! Plus I think it was really kind of dumbed down in the name of seeming modernized. It felt far more like movie set after movie set, rather than a truly immersive world.

Yeah, as many have pointed out, it’s the Force Awakens of the franchise.
