In a parallel universe where the PC-FX came out overseas, this is the kind of title I could see Working Designs bringing over like they did with a lot of PCE CD games.
I genuinely had no idea this game existed until the news of the translation today. I also had completely forgotten NEC made a successor to the PC Engine. I definitely am going to give this game a play now, it looks fascinating.
A game like this is why game preservation is so important. This just shows what was around in Japan that could have had an impact on games to come like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. I love learning about obscure and lesser known games like this. Thank you!
After the Christmas Eve chaos, I finally have a moment to catch up on muh VGE videos. And this is such a great surprise to see! Now we just need a MiSTer core for PC-FX!
Good on the the DC romhacker, Derek (ateam), to finally finish off this project (at least with a big release). This project was spluttering for so long.
The 2d character "grows" or "shrinks", depending if your moving toward or away from the camera!? I wonder how it was done? Merry Christmas, by the way.
The PC-FX was one of those mystical systems I dreamed about when seeing the import ads in the magazines back in the day. Even with such a small library, still always wanted to own one.
I'm surprised Hudson didn't translate it and port it to other consoles later. I mean after RE made this style of games very popular, one would think it's a no-brainer. Looks pretty awesome.
Thank god for fan translations If it wasn't for their hard work, we wouldn't be able to enjoy some of the best games available Reminds me of the game YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of this World I received it in a trade back in the early 2000s and I was captured by the music and voice acting First time ever playing a visual novel and I played through the game without understanding any Japanese Trial and error got me half way through but without knowing Japanese I never managed to finish the game Fast forward to over a decade later and some fans translated the game on PC to english and added the voice work from the Saturn It was a joy to play through I think a few years ago they had released a remake of the game. I actually haven't had time to play through the remake but it doesn't come close to what the original looked and sounded like
Been curious about this game for years but never expected it to get a translation. Seems I've thought that about a lot of good games this yet I continue to be surprised and happy.
Around maybe 2001 I did buy a used PC-FX just because I remember how gorgeous Team Innocent looked in Diehard Gamefan magazine, and I must have spent a very long time looking at those colourful screenshots. Even next to the likes of Panzer Dragoon and Ridge Racer, it had something special. But I never did beat it (I was not one to follow guides). Maybe now I have a chance! Gorgeous packaging too. For me, the other defining PC-FX game is Chip Chan Kick. But the character designs in that were awkward at best, even in their day. Maybe it would have worked better with no anime cut-scenes at all and just arcade gameplay, like a cartridge game. But no translation is required to get the most out of it. I couldn't really get into Zenki at all though.
@@VideoGameEsoterica Do you have a short-list? I found a fighting game once from that far east of eden series that was interesting - I see a lot of visual dating games though when I thumb through. I probably passed over this one thinking it was the same.
@@VideoGameEsoterica Dude, thank you! I haven't had a chance to put much in the "to play" list of my "other" console section of my frontend. Now I have 5 new things to checkout. I really appreciate it!
A precursor to classic RE in gameplay and presentation that ALSO allows me to play as a sexy Anime waifu? I never even heard of this game until now, but sign me the f*** up
@@VideoGameEsoterica Thanks for the reply. I guess this game is not for me then, since I get lost very easily... especially when the perspective keeps changing when you move around. The only reason I can play Residen Evil games is because of the maps.
I remember seeing this on a video about PC-FX (might have been yours, can't remember). This was one of the few PC-FX games that actually looked good. Can't believe NEC went all in on FMV games when it was already proven that everyone hated them. Apparently the PC-FX was supposed to come out years sooner, but for some reason wasn't. It was finally released in 1994, after PS1 was already released in Japan, and by then the thing was way underpowered compared to the PS1. If they released the thing when it was supposed to be released, focused on real 2D games and not FMV garbage, and had backwards compatibility with the PC-FX CD, then it could have succeeded. It had the potential to be a 2D powerhouse just like the Saturn was, except years sooner. Such a shame.
Yes PC-FX was originally “Ironman” or “Tatsujin” and was shelved for years. I’m sure some changes were made for PC-FX but they stupidly released old hardware vs redesigning from the ground up for 2D and 3D. Their plan was to release a 3D add in for the PC-FX but that only ended up in the PC-FXGA. Weirdly with a chip designed by Kubota…yes the tractor company. No joke (well they had a PC division but it’s still Kubota)
Just got a PC-FX + this game in mind condition. Well, apart from the laser unit that's going to be replaced hopefully before new year :) Time to get the disc ready already!
True to form with the pc-fx’s (deserved?) reputation, there’s a lot of anime T&A in this. Kinda reminds me of what you’d get if a PC-98 developer had better hardware and CD storage instead of floppy. There’s a lot of attention to character design, and the game design can be experimental (for the time! SNES is ruled by side scrolling platformers) but sometimes in a good way.
Hope one day it gets modded to add more animation frames for the characters movments. Its a little odd seeing those choppy animations when she runs around
@VideoGameEsoterica It sucks because the hardware is, frankly, awesome! I just wish it was more PC engine like library-wise. The HW oozes quality and feels expensive and its a 2D monster, whats not to love?
I spent an evening fighting with my computer to get a Japan->English OCR text translation service up and running in order to play this game... a week ago 🥲 Nah but this is great news, really interesting game.
Hope everyone enjoys the translation! Glad to celebrate the 30th this way! 🎉

Some form of scaling id presume as it doesn’t seem to be loading in diff assets and PC-FX had scaling
Nice time to warm up the pcfx
