I, too, think your channel is the best freediving channel.
I went with my daughter this past Friday and it was spectacular. Will bring a light next time.
    Thanks.

Your videos are awesome. Who needs cable when you can watch stuff like this for free? Thank you for sharing them. I ran into you at Blue Springs Volusia almost two years ago and you were kind enough to watch my back and even shoot a video for me. Your instructional videos helped me through when I was first learning proper technique. Keep the good times rolling, and I'll look forward to watching your forthcoming videos. Thanks again!

My son and I just got back from free diving at Ginnie Springs. It was our first time free diving anywhere, and we had a blast. We both need to work on our breath holds, and I need a new flashlight. I didn't quite make it back to the grate, partially because I could not see it, but I came very close.

+Edward2Racing Great to hear that you had fun freediving with your son; I hope I can do that someday. My son is 6 yrs old right now. The grate at Ginnie is really far back (about 100 feet), especially for a beginner. It's an achievable goal, but don't push yourself too far, too fast.
Since you're looking for a new flashlight, I recommend this one from Amazon: SecurityIng Waterproof 1000 Lumens XM-L2 LED Diving Flashlight for $53. It runs on C batteries, it's easy to use and has a bright beam with a wider angle flood. It's perfect for caves. I liked it so much that I actually bought 2.

+CaveFreediving My son is 14. We've been practicing at the local indoor pool for the past 2 months. In Ginnie spring, I was holding my breath for 65-80 sec. In the Little Devil spring, I can stay down for 90-105 sec, with a lot less swimming required. My son was so excited that he could touch bottom in the Devil's Ear spring. That's the deepest he has ever swam. Thanks for the recommendation on the flashlight. That one looks really nice for $53. And I really like your videos. Thanks.

I want to start free diving, do you recommend these caves?
Been practicing holding my breath at the pool, do 1:30 to 2min moving underwater and up to 4 min static. Mainly i start having issues at the 2:45 and up.
    Thanks

andy orell The Ginnie Spring cavern is perfect for a beginner because it's not deep, very open, very clear, bright and pretty. Plus, there's a nice place to rest at the surface. Devil's Eye and Ear at Ginnie Springs Park are also good for practice. Blue Springs in Orange City is another good place to practice. Once you're comfortable freediving, then you can start exploring the caves (with some caution).

Is it 15ft + 25 ft(2nd room) + 50ft = 90ft to the grate? Or is it 50 foot total to the grate?

    • @CaveFreediving
      @CaveFreediving  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The numbers on my map are the depth in feet. The lateral distance to the grate is around 100 ft with a depth around 50. It's a tough dive, be careful.

have you had any issues having lights there yet? i haven't ran into the problem, but i'm always worried about it.

You're allowed to have lights in the Ginnie Cavern, but there's a park rule that non-cave certified scuba divers cannot have lights in the Devil's Eye and Devil's Ear caves. Of course, they didn't specifically say that freedivers can't have lights! But I know from experience that the park staff tries to prevent freedivers from using lights in the Devil's Eye & Ear caves, which I disagree with, especially since you can canoe down the river, stop at Devil's Eye/Ear and freedive the cave (meaning that you are not bound by their park rules). Legally, they own the land under the water, but they don't own the water!
Anyway, if you're discreet, you can freedive with a light. The biggest problem is that park management doesn't understand or respect freediving. Plus, some stupid scuba divers get lost in these caves and drown, so the park makes a general rule that applies to everybody when it should only apply to scuba divers. For example, Itchnetucknee State Park doesn't allow weight belts in Blue Hole Spring; Madison Blue Spring doesn't allow "snorkelers" to have weights or lights. Hopefully, freediving will become a more officially recognized sport (that exercises safety practices) and then people won't try to stop us from doing it. They once thought rock climbing was crazy and dangerous too, but now that's a legitimate sport.

CaveFreediving yeah, it's been frustrating how much we're discriminated against. i used to love diving devil's den, now there's no way in hell they'll let us. cave scuba divers die every year, so why can they continue to dive? that's one reason i got my freediving certification, cuz then i can say i'm certified and not just some idiot that thinks they can hold their breath. freediving as a sport definitely needs more respect from parks.

@@CaveFreediving The no lights rule is for your safety, more than one freediver has drowned at Ginnie entering the cavern and not having enough breath to make it back out.

@@Teampegleg Not hard at all to believe watching these videos. I like that challenge of swimming into caves, i think a lot of people do. No question it's a very high risk activity once you start requiring lights.
