    Yngwie J Malmsteen. I love how he uses the middle initial to differentiate himself from all the other Yngwie Malmsteens out there.

    AHH. Yngwie! The man who only thinks less is more where string gauge is concerned. I remember hearing it the first time a friend gave me a tape cassette. I still know how 'Queen is in love' and 'This feels like paradise' hit me! My folks played Haydn at home... More than harmonic minor driven harmonies I was drawn to his soloing style because of his 'racing' to the end note of a lick. Eddie van Halen described his way of soloing as 'falling down the stairs and landing on my feet' in terms of note/scale choice but I think Yngwie's playing is somewhat like that in terms of agression.Thanks again Alex!

      For real! Especially when you consider his natural style is a sort of soft jazz-pop fusion. But his shredding is among the best, when he sets his hand to that.

    Hi, Alex. Great video! And thanks for this series. I really like how you have the soloing quietly in the background as you discuss and explain the players.
    On point, I think Yngwie inspired so many and just flat out pioneered the neo-classical guitar soloing style in rock/heavy metal. I know when I began playing many years ago, I was so impressed by him that I began playing a similar speed picking/Phrygian mode style for a bit 😊 (now I'm more into Dorian, chromatical, and plenty of legato sound movements, by the way) .
    Anyway, I wanted to say this: What amazes me even more about Yngwie is that he's now getting closer to age 60 and still has speed, accuracy, and feel better than ever! I know if I can still play like I do at his age of 57, I would throw my hands up in the air in happiness after playing my favorite licks. The real side discussion here is that as fellow guitarists, we all really have to be grateful, and hope that Father Time never puts a damper on our playing. Think of Les Paul. 👍

      Hahaha thank you mate... Well I do love them both , I don't really know how myself but I guess I think of it all as music but and just different expressions of it.... But upon reflection it does seem quite extreme.. 😂 Glad you're enjoying the series Tom. All the best 👍

    Troy Grady has a great breakdown of Yngwie’s picking technique. He’s a downward pick slanter, every new string begins on a downstroke and he plays every string with an even number of notes, if he has to play an odd number of notes on a string then he uses pull offs or hammer ons to keep his picking hand free.
    You slant your pick upwards while playing, I do the same unless I plan on doing ascending sweeps. Really good video!

    The first Yngwie CD I listened to was the Collection, but I didn't pay too much attention because I was too much into speedy stuff like Stratovarius and Helloween. Like a year later my cousin lend me a Facing The Animal cassette and it was game over bro! I collected everything from Alcatrazz 'till Facing The Animal to a point that I realized I was listening to Yngwie every single day of my life for months, and I was the same as you, to me the most important thing about him is not only his guitar playing but the songs, the music is catchy and the lyrics are as strong as his soloing.

    I saw Yngwie at the Marquee Club in 1985. There are some gigs you never forget, that was one of them. Jaw dropping guitar playing the likes of which I had never seen before, plus it was the loudest experience of my life. It was, I imagine, louder than standing next to a Saturn V at takeoff.

    Malmsteens stage presence as he plays this technically challenging style should also be noted. When I saw him in 1985 in Cleveland, Pennsylvania in the USA..I saw him throw his guitar straight up in the air and catch it on a g# diminished 7th. arpeggio in several neck positions and resolved it to an a minor arpeggio within seconds!😄

  • @nichaju1
    @nichaju1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That’s a great one Alex! I love Malmsteen and all the neoclassical era artists that followed, like Joe Stump... In fact, I try to play in that style at the moment, but in P4 tuning ( my favorite player made me change to it some years ago😜). I’ve found some interesting patterns for arpeggios, and with few to none finger rolling. You’ve shown some exemples in standard tuning, and improvised in P4: I would be very interested in how you deal with swept multi-octave triads and the patterns you use for them in this fantastic tuning. I really love this serie of videos, by the way, and I’m very happy that we share the same guitar gods so far 😊. Can’t wait for the next one!

    Only thing missing is the high 24 fret E he religiously hits every solo by stretching 3 frets on standard Strat. hahahha I HOPED you'd go up there and hit that out of the blue like he always does. oh well, you covered a lot of stuff he does and some of it sounded really close but of course that tone he gets..... it's so midrangey and distinct. Love that mahogany looking Ibanez. I scalloped two of my guitars. really like that. No fretboard drag.

    The versatility of your talents seems to know no bounds. :-) What I find so remarkable about Yngwie's playing - and yours - is the extremely precise coordination between the picking and the fretting hands even at the lightning speed of these tempos. And I gotta throw in my little Vinnie Moore plug here, cause he was also right there with Yngwie back in the mid 80's doing his own brand of superb neo-classical shredding. Vinnie went on to become a much more bluesy player over the next few decades in the Satriani style tho, unlike Yngwie, who has stuck with it for all these years, God bless his soul. :-) Yngwie is our modern era's Bach, Mozart or more appropriately, Paganini. :-) You play this style so amazingly well, as you seem to do with all of them... thanks for sharing!!

    Malmsteen..when I was 12 yo radio in Poland used to broadcast complete records and I recorded Trilogy but did not get that who was the guitarist. I was shocked that I found out that this could be played on the guitar. I started playing guitar at 14 and Malmsteen, Satriani were my heroes later. Although I am 49 I still love wild Malmsteen solos, sweeps and that neo classical style. More into FG this days but anyway guitar is a unbelievable journey.

    What about his 1985 Japan concert DVD. That is a killer concert!!
    Jeff Scott Soto says " now we're gonna fo a song off of our upcoming LP" The song was ( Don't Let It End)
    Its awesome you were so inspired by his playing, my experience was similar, got Trilogy lp and just loved the tunes and then the last song played!! Trilogy Op5
    It wasn't his speed that hooked me but the Acoustic interlude about 2mins in. That made me fall for guitars, guitarists, neoclassical.
    Changed everything from that day I was on a mission. I still suck tho😛
    Keep kicking ass!!

    Yngwie came onto the music scene with nearly as much punch as EVH, with a "who the hell is that?" the minute you heard his playing coming through your stereo speakers. But emotion? Come on Alex, you've cornered that my friend! If anyone ever wonders if you enjoy what you do, all they have to do is turn down the volume and watch you play. Thanks for the lesson in shred!

    • @AlexHutchingsMusic
      @AlexHutchingsMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah man, he definitely blasted on to the scene with great impact as you say.... I'm not entirely sure I understand your ? after the emotion word.. I also have Live in Leningrad on record. Maybe one day I could give it to you as a gift. I love your little lessons that you give with each Master of the guitar. Quite the insight. Hello mate, my pleasure, and thanks so much for your Paypal support, sincerely appreciated.. What a great question too mate.... Well, it's a touch one to answer, because I was fortunate enough to have some at the same time as learning, it's hard to know how I'd have played with out. That said having it taught me good posture and helped me to understand the mechanics of music, sometimes this can be a double edged sword because of the whole using your head over your ear etc etc... I think it depends on the player you'd like to be, Hendrix and Page both didn't know theory or read music and did amazing things.... but the final thing i would say is, perhaps it's never too late to try it? Could be fun.... Anyway mate again and I'm really pleased you're enjoying the new series. All the best 👍🎸🍺👍 🙏
