    Absolutely loving this series, it's like Rick Beato's "What Makes This Song Great" but specifically for guitarists, long may it continue 😎 We didn't have many SRV look-a-likes up in Manchester, we had all of the suit-wearers instead. Matalan's business wear section was doing a roaring trade in the 90's 😂

    • @AlexHutchingsMusic

      Thank you David, I'm glad you're enjoying it..... And I'll take it as a great compliment comparing it Ricks mega channel... If I have so much as a quarter of his following I'd consider that a huge success... 😉 Funny about the Matalan suit wearers.... Brilliant.. Thanks for watching mate.

    SRV one of my all time favs. R. Paradise is iconic. I love the conversational record with great Albert King 'In Session' this is my all time fav. It speaks so much about own idols and relationship between musicians. I'm not a 'bluesy' guy, but this is abs great!!! I can imagine hearing the big fat amps standing three doors behind the producer and this recording is so ful of breath-bluesy-power-tone.

    This definitely reminds me of a few things. 1. I've noticed as a musician gets technically better, they get less comfortable with silence. 2. th-cam.com/video/QwXAqIaUahI/w-d-xo.html at 13:15 Bill Evans explains that musicians should be playing honestly and simply. I explain to my students to play what goes WITH the music, NOT with their ego. Alas, I also, sometimes, don't pay attention to my own advice. A great lesson on the other side of SRV!

    Great to see a lesson that is more about listening than slavish note choices! Also, really interesting to see you tuned in 4ths - do you switch between the two or are you moving toward tuning in 4ths on more guitars? I know Tom Quayle plays 4ths tuning, but he now says he no longer feels comfortable in standard tuning .

    • @AlexHutchingsMusic
      @AlexHutchingsMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Edward, thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the Topic of todays video.... I've been playing in 4ths now for about 12 or more years... And in that time I too have chosen to never play in Standard, In the other lessons I have decided to use Standard to appeal to most players as to not put them off from the videos... My belief is that the tunings are so similar it's not that difficult to learn from either way. Especially lessons like this when the concepts are universal. Wow this became a long comment.. 😂 Thanks for watching mate. 🙏🎸

    SRV is the reason I started playing guitar back when I was around 12 years old, he affected me immensely, his feel, his hard core aggressive approach just chilled me to the bone. I was hooked from the first time I heard Scuttle Buttin. Still to this day, even though I have learned to play most of his stuff. I listen to him purely for pleasure. His guitaring is timeless a spiritual thing of angelic beauty. It's hard to put into words but he was very unique and special. A definite gift from above.

    I went to see Joe Satriani play his Surfing With The Alien live outside at a Pier in New York. Took my girlfriend at that time, Joe came out playing just like he sounds on record. He's playing beyond my understanding but, I loved what he could do with a guitar in his hand. He finished his set and we got ready to leave because she wasn't feeling it but, asked was there someone coming out next. I said, "some guy i heard his name some where, i think he plays blues." He walks out, hits his first note. She jumps up out of her seat. Points at him, looks at me and says. "now i love this guy!" I was hooked too!! He just played raw straight from heart. He's energy went out off his fingers, hit those strings, then your ears and soul........... He blessed us all with the time he spent here with us. With his Angel wings, hat and six strings..........SRV. So, this would be why i liked your playing some 11 plus years ago. : ) Great job and you so appreciated AH.

    Growing up in Texas in the 1980s, I was more influenced by Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. Once I spent a Christmas vacation in Mexico and one guitar player I met there really admired SRV's playing. Once Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top said they played the blues but didn't sing the blues. SRV was really influenced by Hendrix, and Hendrix himself used some jazz chords, most famously that one in Purple Haze. 5/7 4/6 3/7 2/8, an E something or the other. One SRV song I really liked hearing on the radio was The Sky is Crying. Those bends! He had to have used heavy strings to get that tone.

    SRV catapulted the blues to a new level! His playing and music turned people on to that scene that would've most likely never listened to anything but rock. Losing him was a tragedy, but he left us with so much! Thanks for this snippet into his playing!
