      Really beards man This is just the shallow end of the vast ocean that is natural food sources and Really you could spread such a different and 10 times more positive message if you just documented different natural food discoveries ( ROOTS , PULPS , TEAS ETC) Rather than encouraging your audience to kill? When some of them Wont even have had a chance to form their own opinion but now they are doing what you project because they think its right.. its a sad world for the majority !

      What's with you men. You don't have to be into the same stuff not be able to have a great relationship. A relationship depends on the person, the individual. Whether the dad is nice enough and loving enough to engage with his child boy or girl. Girls aren't always into their daddy's stuff but can have a wow relationsihp as boy. If the dad loves them enough and he himself is loving then he would always keep trying to engage with you. School stuff, your friends and how you getting on. You can have a lot in common and still not get on because of the individual. Many son's work along side their dads and can't stand them. A child is one of the most flexible beings and if he or she grows up not close to the parent usually it's because of the parent and their personality. Don't make that mistake if you ever have a child. If you do have a child and you are not close and it's not too old, it's never too late. It's all about YOU as a person and the way you are with your child. A child has many things going on - school, friends, activities (hopefully) you can always converse about what s/he is doing, how they are getting on, are they happy. It is for the parent to make that child mentally healthy and not for the child to make the parent happy. With that making the child happy will also make you happy and build on a relationship. Don't be limited, inflexible and think relationships with children are gender specific and a certain way. We live in a modern societ so keep a mondern approach. Just learn to love children and in return they will always love you. Sorry for your dad's lack of relationship as I can relate with both parents.

    And if you want to finish and fully dry it out get like a cookie sheet pan and spread out the crystallized maple sugar and set the oven on low heat crack open the door alittle so the moister can leave the oven and you’ll have fully dryd crystallized maple sugar that you can place into a container and use when ever !! I put mine thru a coffee grinder a few times to get it evenly crushed and it’s amazing !!! Love the channel btw !!!

      if you cook it until it gets to "hard ball" stage, or until it comes off a spoon in an apron, put it in a wooden bowl (so it doesn't cool too fast) and Stir Stir Stir! it'll fluff into "granules" all on it's own, no grinder needed!

    Just a hint for next season. I used to live in Vermont and made syrup for 5 years. You can cut your boiling time down if you remove the ice from your buckets. The sugar doesn't freeze, only the water does, so remove the ice and you'll have a more concentrated sap.

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Our buckets freeze right to the bottom!

    • @bigguns45acp
      @bigguns45acp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I saw liquid with ice dumping out of your buckets. The liquid part is the concentrated sugar. I would empty all my buckets into a 40 gallon plastic tub I had, cover it and let it freeze overnight, they the next day I would pick the ice out of the tub before boiling. I guess it depends on how cold it gets. But usually you can chip the ice away and just boil down the liquid. At least that's how it worked for me. It took me 3 seasons to learn that.

    For the garden and the weed situation, you can get things like:
    Black weed barrier fabric to lay around plants- upside is it warms the soil faster so you can start growing sooner and it can be reused, downside is its plastic based and it costs.
    Pine needles / dead leaves /hay applied as a mulch around plants. Can break them up into mulch or leave them whole. Upside = natural option, holds in soil heat, slows water evaporation so less water is required, slowly disintegrates and gives nutrients back to soil, pine can be used to help acidic soil plants, loose mulch gives a home to beneficial bugs,free option if you gather it yourself. Downside= labor of gathering it, can hold in humidity which is good in some cases, but also can promote molds particularly around squashes- not sure if that would be as much of an issue in your location though.
    Can also look into permaculture techniques as they require less maintenance and weeds are usually just left to do their thing. Usual thought is they'll choke out plants, but there's evidence that the competition among plants promotes more phytochemicals/nutrition/medicinal benefits pound for pound. Also, in your videos about the garden, I saw quite a few edible/medicinal weeds! They're volunteers, lol! Eat them too :D

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Leah, big problem is that we have clay soil here. We really need a truck of sand to break it up. We have lots of pine needles though! If we get things right, the plants we want should be able to grow and shade out the rest. That's the end goal anyway. We'll see. It's hard since it's not a huge priority for my brother and he has better access to all the things we need. In time though.

    • @LeahMcNeir
      @LeahMcNeir 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Wooded Beardsman hmm yeah sand would help a lot then for drainage and air/nutrient issues. The weeds are probably helping that process too. Many disturbed/poor soil weeds are soil healers. Can add compost and leaf mulch to start building up new soil too. Each fall when people rake leaves, grab their bags full of leaves! Great opportunity for free compost/soil, lol. Run lawn mower or weed wacker over the leaves to chop em up a bit, rebag or toss in a giant heap pile. toss it around to aerate and add some water / worms every now and then and by spring you'll have a good amount of soil or compost to help amend that clay!

    I live on Vancouver Island where we have Western Big Leaf Maple which can be tapped from December to early March. I get after it every season. When your sap freezes the sugars concentrate in the remaining liquid.... not in the ice crystals. You can pull out the ice with minimal loss of sugar and save some time and heat energy when evaporating. I know a guy who puts his sap pails in the freezer until they are half frozen in order to concentrate the sap before boiling it off. That's his step one.

    If you rub butter around the top 2 inches of the inside of the pot, it will cause the syrup to flash back down when it bubbles up. Also, you can use a stand mixer such as a Kitchen-aid to mix the syrup. Works great and the sugar is much dryer and finer. I spread mine out on cookie sheets for a couple days and then put bigger lumps through a fine mesh sieve.

    If you would, clarify something for me please?
    When you tap these trees, there is no 'sand' or inedible grit in the sap, correct? I am thinking that where one company was showing their maple syrup having 'sand' in it which they had to filter out, perhaps this was actually silanes from the tree metabolizing the silicates in the soil which then oxidized and precipitated out, or else perhaps some kind of calcium like crystals.
    Do you know anything about that? ~( .m.)~

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      There should never be sand! It might be crystalized sap..into sugar which happens when you go too far past the temp you need to make syrup. If you go long enough, it turns into dry sugar which I have done.

    • @BirdSongintheWoods
      @BirdSongintheWoods 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, there is never any sand. We have clay soils and as the sap boils and reaches syrup phase, minerals precipitate out and form niter or what people call 'sugar sand'.
      It is not gritty, it is very, very fine powdery feel. No taste.
      We hand filter and can never get it all out, even when using pre filters and Orlon filters. The 'sugar sand' does not harm you or the syrup flavor. It settles to the bottom of our jars leaving clear syrup above.
      I watched one woodsman who uses the sugar sand in granola. Hope this helps!
