Of course Joy was destined to be THE Christmas Star. Someone as adorable as her was obviously going to be ethereal. And goddamnit Nicola Coughlan, you’ll be getting my therapy bill. 😭
The religious connotations of this scene within the Whoniverse are absolutely staggering. Effectively the entirety of Christianity was created off the back off a malfunctioning nuclear test by a future weapons manufacturer. Incredible. 🎉
I mean the Doctor already said he met Jesus, and he wasn't all that. So I'm pretty sure that in this world it's well known by the doctor it's not how people think. Also, this might imply the birth of that star could have caused some phenomenon that is why Jesus had abilities in this universe. You know, just like all fictional characters. Jesus is fictional like every other mythological figure.
She was actually in the episode. This one we had the other character who he spent a year with in the hotel. That was the one everyone grew accustomed to.
I usually don’t like Christmas specials, and haven’t clicked with Ncuti yet I was expecting the minimum for this episode. I was proven wrong. This is absolutely the most wrong I have been proved in a doctor who episode ever. The episode made me happy and miserable. I cried at the end. I did. I haven’t cried in over a year and a half. I don’t know if it was just this episode, but joy clicked with me because in a way I was trying to put on a happy face for other people. And due to other reason during that day, I had broken down at the end of the episode. Thank you Moffat, I needed that moment. Has to be the best episode for Ncuti and for personal reasons, one of the best I have seen ❤
So, she was really emotionally fragile and traumatised by what happened to her mother and that she couldn't say goodbye...and their solution to resolving this storyline was (more or less) suicide? I'm not sure what the writers for the show are smoking right now but I suggest some nicotine patches 😶
Well then as much as I think you should keep your negative comments to yourself, I sorta get it since this is one of the better episodes of Ncuti’s run, imo this is in the top 3
This is the second time the Doctor has been involved with the birth of Jesus. In Voyage of the Damned, the Tenth Doctor said he got the last room, presumably he meant the last room at the inn to ensure Mary and Joseph went to the stables for Jesus's birth, similar to how the Thirteenth Doctor and her companions had to stay on the bus to ensure Rosa Parks got arrested to keep a crucial event in time fixed.
It was a good christmas for Doctor Who, he could have the same number of lost as the ones in "The Husbands of River Song" and "Twice Upon a Time"... dude, Capaldi is the one who has to farewell more often.
I see what they were trying to do here. The execution was just awful. This entire special could have been really cool but it felt low budget and bland. I hope next season is better and darker, but I’m not holding my breath.
..How on earth was it executed poorly? How much darker do you want this show to get, the doctor cries in every episode now that’s dark enough for any doctor who fan to witness
I enjoyed this episode. That being said, this ending is essentially the Doctor allowing someone who is depressed, alone, and has nothing to live for to kill themselves because existence as a star is better than her current life. And... yikes.
For the last freaking time: Joy didn't kill herself! She transitioned into a new form of existence! I know that's what brainwashed cultists say when they kill themselves but this time it's true!!! She's still very much alive and very much sentient!
No yeah, this was not a happy ending for me. It's also established just before she does it that she's brainwashed again by the star when her eyes glow. It doesn't even feel like a necessary sacrifice when the Doctor had his plan in motion.
Absolute gibberish. This poor girl who has had a sad lonely life and who gets abused by the Doctor is killed by an alien machine and turned into a star and we’re supposed to think this is a GOOD THING?! The Doctor failed. Shockingly bad episode.
The most horrible episode of DW I have ever seen. Bad acting, bad script, bad effects (and my first Doctor was Sylvester McCoy...). A complete waste of talent
I think this episode ended up being a condensation of all the highs and lows I had with the most recent season. Too much happens in a short span of time, special effects are fantastic one moment and silly the next, and the episode endings can sometimes feel really anticlimactic or off. I like Ncuti a lot but feel like the Doctor got done really dirty this episode, essentially being characterized as just nasty to everyone around him the moment his companion leaves in a way that doesn't stop him from going back to see her. A lot of people saying Joy is "still alive" as a star- is she really, though? I think this episode had an interesting premise but it didn't pay off at all.
Ncuti Gatwa has an east scottish accent so of course some things will be pronounced differently. Don’t go attacking this show just because somebody pronounces a word a different way?? Also, the Fourth Doctor pronounces “gallifrey” like “gallifree” along with words such as day, pray, and gray because he also has a separate dialect, would you like to bash him for it too?
I saw a theory that this was Valenguard's plan all along. To create Christianity so the church can buy their weapons in the future. Also the whole "The star can make you think your thoughts are your thoughts but actually, they aren't. The ending didn't sit right with me for some reason anyway. Furthermore the Doctor could have gotten back to the time hotel by asking the fourteenth Doctor if he can take him to the time hotel. I thought it was alright, a solid 4/10.
Well the Matter + Antimatter mix is soo wrong. The live span of the star would be so short, that it would not last an hour, let alone 2000+ years. but for a corny fantasy story, reality is not a problem.
Who said anything about race? Nothing wrong with having a black doctor but they really gotta up the writing and improve the visual effects. People may enjoy what they’ve been given but doctor who can be so much better…
Having RTD At The Helm Of Doctor Who Is The Exact Equivalent Of Having Bozo The Clown At The Helm Of Doctor Who. Doctor Who Has Become Complete And Utter Garbage. 🗑️ Rest In Peace Doctor Who. The Show Is Truly On It’s Last Legs. 💯💯💯💯💯
So I guess Jesus exists in Doctor Who now? Does that mean Christianity is the one true religion? Because the last thing Christians need is an ego boost.
Doctor Who is quite a mess now. And i'm Christian. But yeah, it means Jesus exists. I think it always did but not in a holy canon way, i don't even know what it means to Doctor Who, actually. Still... The Toymaker on the special said he played against God and won, looks like he wasn't just talking. Maybe they turned canon with the Blue Yonder's salt thing. With all that said, i'm sorry for what you may had dealt with Christians and i wish you a better experience so someone could change your mind. I miss old Doctor Who.
The Christmas Special was fantastic and to be honest there's an amout of hatred for the show but as a longtime fan of the show Ncuti Gatwa will remain as the Doctor whether you like it or not
Of course Joy was destined to be THE Christmas Star. Someone as adorable as her was obviously going to be ethereal. And goddamnit Nicola Coughlan, you’ll be getting my therapy bill. 😭
Doctor: Joy?
Joy turns around
Joy: I eated it 😂
Toymaker: The Doctor met Joy, but she was killed by a briefcase.
- But she turned into a star and bought Joy
- WELL THATS ALRIGHT THEN!
Gotta be honest, this twist really threw me for a loop. Didn’t expect it in spite of the episode’s title, but I liked it.
That look Ncuti Gatwa gives at 2:06 is so reminiscent of Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor. Fantastic!
The religious connotations of this scene within the Whoniverse are absolutely staggering. Effectively the entirety of Christianity was created off the back off a malfunctioning nuclear test by a future weapons manufacturer. Incredible. 🎉
A weapons manufacturer who also weaponise religion
Not really what the star symbolises

@ Jesus of Nazareth ? A fictional character?
@@ZapStrideGamingNo way!!! Don't tell me Zeus is fictional next!!!
It kind of makes me think about Astrid. Her fate was just as emotional as this.

Imagine just wanting to chill in a hotel room on christmas only to end up becoming Jesus instead ☠️
She became the Star of Bethlehem, not Jesus
We all need some joy to the world. Just like what Joy did in the episode.
So, she was really emotionally fragile and traumatised by what happened to her mother and that she couldn't say goodbye...and their solution to resolving this storyline was (more or less) suicide?

What happened Didn't the modern or TikTok audience show up.

This is not Doctor Who. This is Doctor DEI.

This episode was going so well until this.

I see what they were trying to do here. The execution was just awful. This entire special could have been really cool but it felt low budget and bland. I hope next season is better and darker, but I’m not holding my breath.

The Star Seed will Bloom and The Flesh will rise.

Exactly what I wanted to say. Also: biblically, stars are angels. So you could say she's regenerating into an angel.

That was some lazy writing
You don't know anything about writing lol
@@ennayanne You need to put a comma after the word 'writing' and then a period (or full stop) at the end of a sentence.
You are welcome.
@Face2East Nobody does that on the internet, but you’re correct.
