    Thank you. You pointed out my mistake. I hit a lily pot with the mower and transplanted into another pot but they did not come back. Now I realize I planted them too shallow. I probably should add soil to the surviving pot and start again following your instructions with new ones.

    Excellent video! The third idea is a great one…. As I’ve bulb lasagnes all over the place at the moment. After watching your bulb lasagne planting video last autumn, I planted a bunch of them. Great idea it was too. They worked great

    Hi Niall: I planted 8 lily bulbs in a square plastic container (not much larger than the bucket you showed) thinking I would get 8 nice lilies about 2 feet high. Well, I got 8 stalks with about 15 huge flowers per stalk and each stalk was nearly 6 1/2 feet tall. I could hardly believe my eyes. I've never seen that happen before. Anyway, I'm totally sold on orange lilies and am very grateful to you for this and all of your other videos. Thank you, DA

      @donaldauguston9740 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@GPG0000 You won't believe this, but I got them at 50% off at Lowe's in NOVEMBER of that year. The 2nd year, they grew to the same height but there were 11 stalks with the many blooms per stock. Then I realized I needed to get them in the soil. This year, I got 14 stalks but they didn't grow as tall as in years passed. I think they were about 4 1/2 feet tall. That may have been because I was gone when they really needed water a couple of times.

    Niall, a great video with lots of great info as always. Lilie's are my favourite flowers outdoors, i can't have indoors because of allergies in the house. When they flower, i find myself greeting them as they open daily.Love that last tip big time, never thought of doing that. Rem if lilie beetles turn up, they are red,have tissue at hand,don't touch the plant, put tissue is one hand underneath where they are,then, with other hand, touch the area, the beetle in defence, will automatically drop off, ta da,into the tissue, Sorry i then i dispose of them never to return. Their eggs can be found under a leaf,black in colour, i kill by hand. They can destroy a lily in no time,trust me ,i learned the hard way. It was only in one area they appeared, so don't always turn up.
    Thanks for the great growing tips, i only yesterday bought some more (that were reduced )for my garden. Hope all well Niall, and todays weather better than yesterday. Have a super day.

      Hi Lorraine! Yeah for the final method, I'd seen in on an old Gardener's World years ago and it's just so handy. That's such good info on the lily beetles - I'm keeping everything crossed that I don't get any (though I know I probably will!). Have a super week, at least in between all these windy wet days we're having!

    3rd option is exactly what I had come up with last winter for all my spring bulbs... Potted up same colour tulip bulbs in grocery tubs that come for fruits.. Also used plastic drinking cups that I had around for individual bulbs, vburrued them in a raised bed outdoors and mulched so that they root and sprout after the chill... I can see good leafes now so am. Planning to pot them now in the containers in arrangments 😁.. Exactly as u said this offers flexibility to change up things a bit in your garden every year

    Nevertheless, yesterday I got down to sowing flowers indoors. So far sea lavender mix, narrow-leaved coneflower, china asters and lemon thyme. I'm not expecting much, hoping for the best. Looking forward to your next video, keep them coming!

    Love love love lilies, they were my very first plants I grew as a nervous non grower after many failed attempts at other plants. They renewed my confidence in flower gardening. I always cut a flower stem to bring in the house and enjoy the scent which seems to waft and dissipate so it’s like smelling it for the first time all evening and it lasts for weeks. They really are my guilty pleasure and I now have a real collection of varieties including 3 new ones this year 😊
    You mentioned drying out the bulbs in the lasagne planted pot, silly question I’m sure, but can they be left in situ for the following year if I don’t need the pot?
    Haven’t seen the minis in a while, hope they’re doing well….. my two get quite excited when we go to the poly more and more, I’m sure they know know that the munchies will soon begin!

    Yes, your right about their longevity. In the house I'm in now I inherited a healthy patch of the common orange lilies (aside from the common orange daylilies), and it amazes me these plants have been there probably well over 100 years still coming up greeting the current residents every summer. Nice to think how many people have enjoyed this ritual every year. I know there are always question on lily beetles which I don't have out in North Dakota but were a problem back in Rhode Island. The cup method always worked for me if I added a little bit soap to a half full cup of water. Any kind of unwanted bug can be easily knocked in and can't get out and suffocates in seconds from the soap and then just toss them into the compost.

    Just bought some lily bulbs and dalias. 👍 So it's great to get your advice right now. 😊 🌺 (The dalias i will keep inside until there is no more frost at night.)
    Because i only have a balcony i have to plant them in pots. I guess i add some spring flower bulbs like daffodils and grape hyacinths on the top. These are just starting to show their shoots here in south Germany. So these pots look already nice till the lilies come up.
    Some of the bulbs i keep for my mom as an easter present. These will stay in smaller pots until i carry them to her garden. 😊

    The one thing I will say is that in many regions here in America, it gets so hot in the summer that containers, um, they cook so to speak. And for that reason I tend to keep containers for showy anuals that don't have a temperature sensitive bulb. My bulbs seem to do better in the ground because the containers get so hot. I know over there in the U.K. the temps stay more even. Just throwing it out there that in hot regions, that slightly deeper planting depth plus the overall cool of the Earth really helps the bulbs stay happy and not stressed out.
    Edit: Haha. Then you mention not cooking them. But seriously, even non-metal pots cook over here. Better to plant lilies in the ground in most places that are hot here in America.

So they tought it was spring. So, they finish by having flower inside. At spring, put back out, they think it was fall. Let them there and they had a second flowering!

    Hello thank you very much for this beautiful video. I'm afraid I came too late to your video. I planted my first Lily bulbs in mid fab. They are called eyeliner lily with white flowers. At a time of purchase the bulbs had already sprouted to about 2" height and I planted them to the depth of only the bulbs assuming that the sprout must stay outside the soil. Then came weeks of heavy frost and now I see the sprout has turned brown. Is there anyway i can save them or they are a right-off. An advice on this matter will be much appreciated. Thanks for lovely presentation.

    How to store tiger Lilly bulbs

      Oh good question - I might have to make a video about that once I've researched it myself properly!

    Hi there my wife was given a pink lily on mother day now flowers have dropped whatever to do with it

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was it potted in soil? If so, I would just feed and keep the plant happy to put sustenance back into the bulb. It'll eventually die back but should regrow next year

    What do I do with the lilies after they bloom?

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would deadhead them to avoid them producing seed, keep watering and feeding the plants to help them bulk up for next year, then either let them die back naturally in the pots and keep them there, or lift the bulbs and store them for next year's plantings. Hope this helps!

    hey Niall, at th-cam.com/video/fQD3Haqh5EE/w-d-xo.html 4:36 I saw that you put three bulbs very close together. Will they develop ok in that way?

    I've planted my first lily bulbs. It doesn't seem right to cover the sprouts on top. Can anyone advise me? I'm in zone 8B.

      If you do not place the lily bulbs deep enough in the soil (3 times of their own height or no less than 2 times), you can either redo the planting (more work) or simply dump more dirt above their current location to make up the depth, more like making a small hill. Although your zone has a very mild winter, you can keep your lily bulbs cool and moist in the deeper soil during the hot summer.

      Btw, the bulb planted deep enough in the ground can help support its weight when the entire plant grows to a bigger one eventually (in a few years). I once had several big lilies from the same bulb planted several years ago, so heavy on the flower stalk but the stem had no problem to stay put!

      @@lovepeony1478 I've got 3 bulbs planted in a big 12" container. Two pots with 3 bulbs each. I planted them deeper and added extra soil on top. Thanks for the help!

      @@barbaraowens2299 I am sure you will have pretty liles blooming in the summer! Last week when I was at the store, I could not resist to buy a pack of 4 Asiatic Lilies (Sugar Love) bulbs to plant for summer bloom. I used to have pinky, yellow, and white lilies in the front and back of my garden but they're all gone for different reasons after years. My zone is like 5a/b, so the winter can be very chilly, so the depth of planting can definitely affect its survival over the harsh winter, although the package states they're hardy bulbs to stay in the ground throughout the winter.

    Adding grit to a planting hole doesn't do anything to help drainage, the same way it's been proven it doesn't do so in pots (quite the opposite actually).
    You've got a huge volume of soil around your bulb and you expect those few grains of gravel to actually do something? Not in the slightest.

    If your planting your lily out in a border would you not want to make up a mix of grit and compost like he did for pots?

    Hi, would it need to soak the bulbs a little in the water before planting them ?

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No you shouldn’t need to. They’ll absorb the soil moisture and will be just fine ☺️
