Whilst this will produce a hot compost bin, it will be very vulnerable to damage, and will need extra protection on the outside.

can you help? I start my seeds indoors because I live in Montana and I only really have 90 days outdoors! I'll need to get my tomatoes, peppers and onions started soon, but I have an OUTBREAK of fungus gnats from a houseplant I bought at the hardware store. UGH! I'm worried about starting my seedlings until I get this under control. Do you have suggestions for protecting my seedlings AND eradicating these pests?

Hi Niall, I've been using vermiculite for a few years now, you can get it in different sizes, I use mine for covering the seeds instead of compost, if using compost to cover they sometimes cap but using vermiculite there's no problem with that and it lets in light, take care Steve Colwell.

Great vlog. Like Vanessa it is really difficult to find good quality affordable peat free compost. I treat myself when I’m doing seed sowing but have to compromise when transplanting and doing no-dig on my allotment. Regarding the large tray for soaking the seed trays in I found a cat litter tray can be a good alternative.

    • @niallgardens

Very informative video Niall, thank you. I live in the South of England and have not found a peat free compost that gives good germination or is affordable. I still use Clover for all my sowing and growing needs and they say on their website that the peat is taken from sustainable peat bogs in Ireland, to ease my conscience❤I automatically assumed all gardeners in Ireland were still using Peat😊

Good morning Niall and everyone, hope you're all well. Bit gloomy here today, dark and bitterly cold. Thanks for the information, would you soak the seedling trays to water on instead of spraying on the top with water like I usually do? Before they start showing. All the spring bulbs are showing now, can't wait to see the snow drops, so lovely when they flower in clumps all round my garden and pots. What is the shrub at the side of you with pink blossom 🌸? Looks lovely dancing in the breeze. Well thanks for the great vlog. Time to get ready for church. Take care stay warm, have a great week, happy gardening,😊🌺🏵️🌻 bye for now 😊xx

Morning Hazel! The shrub that's off to one side is my Daphne - it desperately needs planted in the ground, but for now I'm moving it around the garden so I can enjoy the scent! Yeah I pretty much always water trays from the bottom, though I'll occasionally use a mist spray instead if I need to. My spring bulbs are popping up as well so I can't wait to see them flowering. Have a lovely morning in church, Niall xx

Hey Niall, good advice and there are so many shrubs big and small needing pruning too! It can be overwhelming sometimes in mature gardens but a little at a time! I’ve not started my planning of where everything can squeeze into the poly tunnel but I put some tomatoes outside last year and they did quite well so just need to do that again this year to free up space inside otherwise need to plan on either extending current poly tunnel or get another one
