I've just learned that Japanese Beatle hate the way dead ones smell. So for next year as I collect them in soapy water I'm going to use the "death juice" 🤣😂 in a spray bottle and spray the plants to see if that drives them away.
Darlin’, go get yourself some neem oil and blast those buggy plants every once in awhile. The bugs will be gone.
I have it but I hate to spray things if I can help it. 😩 I definitely should spot treat the badly attacked plants though.

They get top heavy.A iron Shepard's hook placed early in spring 6 feet or taller.Provides support at the tops when tied with green jute.They will literally bend on half if not supported. Even 6ft bamboo canes will provide support.

I planted about 12 tree lilies next to my large koi pond about 13 years ago. I love them. They are huge smell great when in bloom and very low maintenance. P.s. your yard looks amazing.

I have Tree Lilies that grow to nine feet tall and have yet to loose one of them to wind or rain. They get very sturdy over time. Some of mine are over eight years old.
Wow!! I always stake mine because they lean toward the sun but hoping one day to get them into a full sun spot where they can do their thing! This gives me hope. 😊

Lilies are my favourite flowers, specially lily trees...I have lots in my front and back garden..During summer, I have an empty plastic jar with water and dishwashing liquid and left it outside..Every morning the first thing I do is carry the jar and check all my lilies for japanese beetles and drop it inside the jar then rinse it every few days....I do it all day while weeding...Few years ago they ruined most of my lilies so I made sure I catch them early...
I've had no issues with lily beetles... knock on wood! The Japanese Beetles are trying to get to my plants but I'm managing to keep the at bay for the most part. I can't stand those nasty bugs!
Lucky you! I’ve gotten lazy with the Japanese beetles but I’m certainly grabbing them when I can. They are the worst!!

I got rid of the Asian lily beetle by bringing coffee grinds out to them every single morning. Put the spent grounds on the ground at the base. I will sometimes just let the filter stay there too until spring cleanup.
Something about the coffee grinds deters them from laying eggs. Good luck.

I just got some asiatic lillies this year that are deep burgandy red.. loved them and was so excited.. but a bunny now has visited them for two nights and has eaten every single leaf on them.. I have nothing but stems left.. I wanted to cry.. After the first night I put a replant down but it did not help.. Praying they will come back next year and the bunnies leave then alone.
They are tasty plants apparently! Between the deer and the rabbits it feels like a losing battle but it can be done! I spray them every two weeks usually but this year with all the rain it’s been weekly 🥲. Good luck! They are pretty resilient, hopefully they have enough energy in that bulb to keep them going!

I truly appreciate what you are doing and I can understand the hard work you put in, I would do the same to all the harmful beetles.
I'm eternally grateful that parasitic wasps were introduced in my area to control lily beetles. Very few problems with them now.
They are beautiful … I just got sum tree lily bulbs in the mail..
When I collect japanese beetles, I put them in a gallon jug of water and then I blend them. (I have a blender just for the garden,) Let them soak overnight and then strain the water. Put in a sprayer and spray the ground. This is the recipe for making your own milky spore solution. Your video is a year old, I hope you find this helpful.

I hear ya with the pest! I hunt Japanese beetles every morning and evening ( for a couple of months) and drown those suckers...with glee! Those beetle traps are the worst, they attract more beetle than they can kill, look it up. the best thing I found is to keep a few plastic take out cups throughout the garden with soapy water then just tap the leaves over the cup for them to drop into, no need to handle.
Yes! They fall right off the leaves when you go to get them… I do this also. Someone mentioned using 4 o’clock too as a sacrificial plant… they eat it and die. Will be testing this out next year! Wish there was a better (easier) way to manage them!

Phenomenal! I have knight rider Lillie’s they are a really dark purple almost black, the Hardy(red) lily and orange Canna lilies.. first time I’ve grown them and I’m hooked. Any advice

I love the results of your hard, tenacious work. Do you let the Lilly foliage get brown like Tulips, or do you cut it back after the flowers are finished?
Yes, just deadhead the flowers when they’re done blooming and leave the rest of the plant to die back naturally and feed the bulb for next year. 😊

They actually get cut back to ground like normal asiatic lilies in fall or spring. I haven't done mine yet, so thanks for reminding me ;-)

Old… let’s just say I haven’t purchased in at least 3 years because of the red lily beetle hunting I do on the amount I have already. So they are all upwards of 4 years old 😊

Do you cut the tree lilies back or dig the bulbs and replant in the fall? I have 5 plants I planted this year and the flowers were amazing. Want to save them correctly for next year. Love, love your gardens. Thanks
Nope I leave them in the ground. They are hardy… I just cut the stems back to the ground in the fall when all is dying back.
Love the lilies, hate the beetles! My problem is flies. ugh, it's difficult to enjoy the garden with flies swarming.

I love your lily video-of course. I have a few questions for you. First, what is milky spore, and where do you buy it? Second, I ordered lilies that will come as bare roots this fall. I’ve never had anything that came as bare root before, so I’m not sure what to expect. Should these plants end up being just as good as lilies that start from an actual bulb? I spent a ton of money, and I’m really nervous about it. If you only have time to answer one question, please answer the one about bare roots. Thanks…and I’m still amazed at your gardens every time I watch one of your videos. Have your gardens ever been featured in a magazine? If not, they should be. You should look into it.
Hi there! Happy to help! First, what type of lily did you purchase? Asiatic lilies? (Or tree lilies or daylilies or martagon lilies etc…..)
Thank you! I ordered some oriental and species lilies that are coming as bulbs. I don’t really know the difference between oriental and species, but I’m not really worried about the bulbs. I ordered some daylilies, and they are the ones that will be shipped as bare root. Those are the ones I’m worried about. Maybe they don’t start as bulbs. I have some daylilies, but I bought them as plants, so I don’t know how they are usually shipped. Any advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
Ok so yeah, the bulbs will be easy…. You’ll bury them approx 6”. Bareroot daylilies are pretty easy also. That’s how all of them come unless you buy potted from a nursery. Depending how soon after shipping you receive them, you can soak them if they look dried too much… (soak for 6 hours or overnight if they look like they need it). If they look full and fine, plant them so their roots are buried but leave the leaves out. You should be able to tell where they get buried too but if they come and you get lost, send me a picture to guidinggreenthumbs@gmail.com, I mark the photo where to bury them too. Just water them well and keep them watered. If you’re headed into fall/winter you may not see growth before they go dormant. If you’re in a warmer zone you’ll see new green growth from the middle of the plant and the cut leaves will brown and die back. (Totally normal!).
Milky spore is a beneficial nematode that attacks the grubs in the soil. It’s a powder (or you can purchase granules) but it needs to be watered in really well and remain a bit moist until it’s worked into the soil/grass and absorbed as well. You can purchase at any nursery center. It’s a Blue and White Bag with “Milky Spore” on it. May come in a box also if you get a smaller amount. 😊

How long do Asiatic lilies live?
I wonder if you could hard spray them with water and get beneficial insects? Any plant you could plant near them to sacrifice to the beetles? I have no idea what I’m talking about. Lol! But thoughts.
You def know what you’re talking about. Would make perfect sense to have a sacrificial plant but I have found one they like more than the lily plant itself. Would love to know if there is one!

Never had mine grow so tall this year, they are probably encroaching 6ft and still no flowers yet...
Hello so quick questions how do you water them? I had some a few years ago and I end up killing them. Then somebody told me I watered them from the flower and not the soil.
I have had most of these lilies for years (8+) and never have to water. Unless they are newly planted, or moved from one area to another... I would not water them unless there is a 2 week or more extended drought period. If yours are newer, then I would only water when needed from the soil down (not flower or leaves) Maybe once a week at most and thats if there was no rain. They are pretty tough bulbs!
Do u think Lilies will survive in very hot places
I have a question ... I just bought an Asiatic Lily start from my local nursery ... its about 7in tall and no blooms of course ... its August though and the only info I can find is to plant the bulb in fall ... Can I plant a start now and if not what should I do ...Thanks
Hi! You can definitely plant it now if it is a potted lily... keep it watered in dry spells and leave the foliage until it naturally dies back. When it dies back naturally, you can cut the stem to about 3-4" above the ground (so you can locate it in the spring!)

Asiatic lilies are hardy in your zone. Best if overwintered in the ground so I would replant them. 😊

@@cassandrarudolph1307 You can cut the leaves and stem off and try to store the bulbs in a cold (37-45° preferably) dry dark area in peat or wood shavings until spring but there is a chance mold could set in with the length of our winter…. A root cellar is perfect if you have one but you’d have to frequently check them.
You can plant them in ground as long as the ground isn’t frozen. You may lose blooms for next year but they can tolerate a lot…and rebound nicely. As long as the bulb is firm it will
grow.
If you’re land isn’t available do you have someone who can plant them in their garden for you until spring?
Do you try to pollinate your lilies like you do with Daylilies?? A video for Lilies will be fun to try

I plsnted mine 2 years ago, my dad stepped on every single one last year before they bloomed broke everyone lol now this year there starting to come up and the rabbits ate all my leaves 😂😢
Try Liquid Fence deer and Rabbit repellent! If you spray consistently (especially after rainfall) it will help!

That is a straw flower (annual here) but so pretty! Will def grow them again!

Beetle traps are a very bad idea.
All the beetles will come 2 your property...and then..a lot will not make their way 2 the trap...they will see your plants and make a bee line to them instead..my neighbor has a trap ..I use a dust....and it works great.
