A big problem with the story events is that story and character development is time locked with no way for new players to replay it.

I think that’s to put somewhat a fear of missing out. It makes players consume the content when there it is still hype. Otherwise, players would just not mind it knowing they can play it later til they would only play it for the rewards since there’s not that much excitement anymore.

Most of the events are like filler in anime. It's not integral to the MSQ. Mihoyo has included some exciting events, but I would mostly tell players to do the events for the weapons, gems, and crowns. I often just blast through the dialogue on the last day because there is a lot, and I don't have the time to sit through it (the MSQ takes enough time as is).
Early complaints were that the game didn't have enough content. Now there is so much that it's hard to stay caught up if you even remotely have a life.

I love Genshin's event structure with 1 small caveat. Quite a few important story events were just temporary 2-week events that no longer exist. Anyone who hasn't played Genshin since release will be confused when you meet a new character and Paimon just goes "Oh it's this guy again" while you have no clue who it is because you only met them in an event.

I'd say that's my biggest complaint with Genshin in general. Artifact farming can be incredibly painful, grinding materials can eat up days worth of time if you let it, and the gacha system will sometimes make you question all your life choices, but what's definitely the most disappointing is when they release a story fit for a short novel and then it's gone forever after 2 weeks.

THIS. A good chunk of Eula's character growth WERE in events(one that comes to mind was the Fakebedo one). I would still dislike her if I had to have only her character story as a basis, and not played the events(nowadays I quite like her). Not to mention Albedo himself, having quite a chunk of his origins hidden behind events.

    • @DanaOtken
      @DanaOtken ปีที่แล้ว +5

I've heard the developers do consider this an issue, and there's reason to think they've been careful enough with their codebase that at least on their side the events aren't lost forever or incompatible with the current version of the game. That said, I expect working out a way to replay events is near the bottom of their very long to-do list. It is, however, probably on the list - which is rare for a gacha game.

I know Mihoyo isnt a perfect company and they have flaws, but I feel like the community doesn't give them enough credit. I love Genshin Impact, its nice and relaxing to play, and can be engaging when you want it to be. They listen to players feedback and always try to make the game fun and interactive.
When we complained about how annoying Crystalflies were, they added and even gave a free 4 star character with the ability to help us farm them. They added Hangout events to get to know more about certain characters (Still waiting on a Kujou Sara and Xinyan Hangout event). They made artifact farming a bit less painful (And I mean a little bit) by allowing us to swap out five star artifacts with the ones we want and doing the same for weekly bosses and regular bosses material.
Again, the game has flaws (Still hoping for the Dehya buffs), but I will definitely keep playing the game with how things are going. Can't wait for ZZZ (Zenless Zone Zero) to come out and I will probably no life Honkai star rail as well. Also, I'm happy that I'm not the only one who disliked Inazuma's story lol

@@Exel3nce after playing through star rail, I have to say that the players give them far enough credit. If not too much credit. Literally, the majority of what players want in genshin is in star rail. It just proves that genshin is just simply a cash cow for Hoyoverse and not a passion project like star rail is. The story of star rail, the characters, the writing in general, is just far better than genshin's. Even the character's personalitys are better. And it feels nice to know that not everyone you meet is immediately your friend or won't ever be your friend. And it's nice that the story is far more adulterated than genshin's but still has far better comedy than genshin. Honkai star rail shows Hoyoverse's true passion. While genshin shows what they can do at a bare minimum. And yes saying bare minimum seems ve y outlandish considering the world and a lot of other aspects but I'm not basing it off that. I'm basing it off how well the story, characters, and systems are compared to genshin.

Since the topic is genshin updates, I believe the most underappreciated updates of genshin are not the mini events, new stories and regions or the spiral abyss. The most underappreciated updates are the updates to the Genious Invocation TCG. Yes genshin has it's own card game in the game, similar to how the Witcher had gwent in it. However while you might argue that every other update in the game is in some way connected to the main income of the game - pulling and building characters - be it because they're meta in combat, you like their gameplay or you like their design and personality in the story or simply because you spent all your free resources that you got trough the events and decide to put in some money. The card game is not only free like everything else in the game, it doesn't let you pay for it in any way. Even if you wanted to pay for it you can't. All cards are aquired by just playing the card game itself either earning them trough combat or buying them with card game currency that is gathered only by playing. And the most interesting part of this all is that genshin characters don't get balance updates. If a character is weak the only way that they can be buffed is if another character is introduced that has good synergy with them and so they become better. In the card game however there are actual balance patches to the cards. There are damage tweaks, cost changes etc. The card game isn't even that much of a popular game-mode in game. Don't get me wrong it's not bad, it's actually one of the most unique card-games i've played but setting aside the 4 weekly PvE battles, every other PvE battle only gives you rewards once and there's really no reason to replay them, other than to try and beat them with another deck. The PvP is very fun but as genshin is a casual game, it has no rank or rewards to playing PvP. It's just for fun. So most people play trough the PvE, play a few matches of PvP here and there when they feel like it but it's far from the most played game-mode. However hoyo not only constantly update it, with every monthly patch we get a few new cards and sometimes balance changes, they also reference it very often in the story quests and events. The existance of this card game, from which they actively refuse to charge any sort of money for, which they constantly update and reference just tells of how passionate the developers are about their game and how much they care about it. This is something I've genuinely not seen in a video game in a long time and never seen to this extent. Again hoyoverse has my full respect for their passion and love for their game.

Hoyoverse has always focused in creating stories through their games , they have done so since Houkai Gakuen 2, which is 9 years old and still gets story updates. They mentioned this in their recent documentary of Honkai Impact 3rd that the importance of story is the reason they've succeeded in the gaming market. At one point their game Honkai Impact 3rd had lost half the users and they decided to take a gamble and that's when "Will of the Herrscher" came out, a short animation with its own song depicting a major story shift in Honkai. A few months later they released "Final Lesson" which is one of the most emotionally packed story moment in mobile and gacha gaming, chapter 9 Final Lesson has sort of become a rite of passage in the community because of how impactful it is to the story and it encapsulates Hoyoverses story writing on how they do story.

Oh. Finally someone who understands the core of genshin. This is rare.
I'm not a veteran player, I started out a year ago but I did watch ppl play Genshin since day one. I agree that Genshin has a good formula for giving out contents. Essentially Genshin is a casual game. Casual Mobile Gacha to be precise. You can enjoy the story, the gameplay or even try-hard on Abyss. But it's not a game to be speed-ran or play 20hours a day kind of game.
Also the events. I for one am very grateful and find it fun. Something small and new adding up every week/2 weeks. On top of that getting in-game rewards for it.
But maybe I'm enjoying it more bcs I don't particularly care about Abyss or just any big-pp-number meta stuff. Even if my artifacts aren't the best, I still can clear everything in the overworld.

I'm a veteran player, I do the story in 3 days, do a whole event in 1 day, do commissions, spend resin, and then I log of. This gets kinda repetitive after 3 years. Genshin gets really boring when you repeat the same thing hundreds of times. Genshin also doesn't care about people that want to play for more than 15 minutes a day.
Genshin doesn't add difficult game modes ,not just abyss DPS check, but game modes where you have to dodge, because abyss causes too much anxiety. They induce anxiety by adding a timer and then they say that adding for example: a endless mode would cause too much anxiety.
The gamemodes are usually just worse versions of others games you could've downloaded, if genshin was 11gb. Why play tcg, if I can play Lor?
This is just my opinion though, so maybe I'm just not the target audience.

And it's really feels frustrating when players whine for no new content or that genshin is too casual (which in some way - fair. you have not much places to face a challenge except for abyss or when tryhard for platina medal in combat event) but i think if game would be different - i wouldn't play this for so long. i enjoy playing and exploring the world playing with a lot of different comps and playing different mini-games as it is and having more features in exploring and world quests are more valuable for me than hardcore gameplay (such thing made me drop another game which i enjoyed but the wall of extreme pay to win is too much).
anyway i'm really happy to see you enjoy the game and it's lore! I'm not going to jump into star rail (i have not much time for so many ongoing games) and will be happy to explore through you!

Yes the content itself is fine. But it wouldn't be needed if the game had a working game-loop/endcontent.
Daily logins force you to play every day without anything to do every day. This breaks people. On some days you have events and those days are fine, but the next day the event is over and all content left is pulling the gacha machine (the only think which is not time gated).

Everything from 2d platformers to top-down shoot-em-ups to pokemon with DNA splicing to open world metroidvania-style vertical slices to literally fall guys.

Shadow Amidst Snowstorms event was one of their absolute best events and i will stand by that until they bring it back.
To spoil it (because most who have started now will never get the chance to play it, although i recommend looking up the cutscenes online!), it's an event centered around Albedo. And despite watching the cutscenes MANY times, I apologize if some events aren't in the exact order!
Albedo has been behaving strangely. From the polite and stoic attitude that he usually presents, where he's both trying to adjust to having people around and considering them as friends (since he mostly lived away from civilization for many years), he suddenly behaves... very differently. One of the first hints we get is that he did not stop to greet the traveler, and he behaved quite rudely to Timaeus, one of his colleagues and subordonates (he is the Chief Alchemist of the Knights of Favonius). When he does return to talk to the traveler, he behaves smugly and a little bit sassy. Now Albedo does have some sass with his wording, but this felt... very different. He felt erratic.
The original feeling of the first encounter with Albedo during this event is that he is... hiding something. Something about this day made him change quite drastically. We decide to go look for him at his usual spot in Dragonspine after we talk to Sucrose and Timaeus.
On the way there, the Adventure Guild is organizing an event to train new recruits and they ask us for help. Eula and Amber join us, but we quickly part ways as we decide to try and meet with Albedo first, especially because this child, Joel, approaches us to find his father and we think Albedo would be able to help us.
As we walk towards Albedo's cave in Dragonspine, we get attacked but we're quickly saved by Albedo and we start walking to his cave. On the way there, we discuss about learning how to paint and he describes using a special kind of starsilver to make the paint glittery, and in this case... he behaves normally, like nothing happened. But when we arrive to the cave, we discover everything is ravaged. Alchemical blueprints are missing, which means that a thief must've stolen them. Albedo seems... thoughtful about it, like there's something he isn't telling us. But we embark on our way to discover the thief.
On the way, an avalanche happens that sends us far off the cliff to another place in Dragonspine, we decide to part ways as Albedo wants to make sure this wasn't caused by the thief. He tells us to stay right where we are and wait for him, as Dragonspine is very dangerous. We quickly get bored and Paimon suggests we start looking for high quality starsilver for Albedo to turn to paint. Albedo returns and asks us what we are doing, and we tell him we found some starsilver for him to use. Right then is when we notice one important detail about him is missing...
Usually, Albedo bears a gold star shaped symbol on his neck, almost like a tattoo, but in this case it's missing. Us (the traveler) take notice of this but don't mention anything about it. And it feels like Albedo suddenly doesn't remember our conversations, about the paint or the thief.
And then we hear Bennett call out for help and we decide to go rescue him. Interestingly enough, Albedo doesn't join us.
During the event you have the option to go save Bennett right away, or... take a couple of steps backwards and explore a cave in the nearby area. When I did the event, I did that first. What we discover there is an alchemy table that's fallen over, a chest and some gemstones used for Alchemy. We don't have a lot to go off of, but we figure this must be the thief's lair.
We go rescue Bennett and then meet up with Albedo again, and then with Amber and Eula and we decide to return to Albedo's cave to rest. There we learn that Albedo can procure pretty much any object as long as he has the blueprint for it. Once again Albedo behaves normally, he's friendly to everyone and really seems to warm up to people.
After we rest, we decide to go back to the camp outside of Dragonspine where the Adventure Guild is, but on the way we're hit with ANOTHER avalanche, this time a much more dangerous one. Us, Eula and Amber manage to avoid it, but Bennett falls and Albedo jumps to save him. We go down to try and find them and we only encounter Bennett, him telling us that despite Albedo saving him, the Alchemist quickly disappeared soon after.
We decide to continue onwards towards the camp despite being lost, and what do you know, we encounter Albedo on the way! But this one is ALSO different! He's not calm or collected and he's easily distracted, compared to when we talked to him the four previous times. He's also missing the star, which the traveler quickly notices.
This "Albedo" ends up taking us the complete wrong direction and soon we find ourselves in a trap. One of the coolest battle cutscenes plays (please PLEASE find it online and watch it) and before this "Albedo" does anything worse, the real Albedo appears and stabs the "Albedo" in the back then tells us to get away. The "Albedo" turns into a giant Whopperflower and we fight it (it's also the boss of the event and it was super fun to fight against, especially in co-op.)
We win against it and return to the camp safely this time, and Albedo explains to us, after we return to his cave, that this whopperflower wanted so badly to know what it's like to be loved by humans, that he was trying to replace him. But... he still seems to be withholding information, which we notice even in our dialogue options. Still, we don't press any further and decide to just believe Albedo.
At the very end, he seems to be talking to someone else, talking about how after being discarded for being a faulty prototype, he was searching to replace him, and Albedo summons his sword and the camera angle changes to view Albedo from above... with another Albedo looking down at him.
We don't get to see the two of them fight it off, but we assume the other Albedo is also killed. Or... is he?
    Some fun facts:
    - this Albedo is often referred in the fandom as Rubedo, but he does have an actual name! In the game files, people have found that the name of the model is Dorian, in reference to The Picture of Dorian Gray, and I personally only really refer to him as Dorian.
    - the thief's cave, which is easy to figure out that it's Dorian's cave, is the ONLY area from an event that remains permanently in the world post-event. There are many other events that introduce new areas, but they're all temporary besides the cave in Dragonspine. You can go visit it, it's in the Entombed City Outskirts, above the lake, you'll see a Cryo Cicin mage in front of it.
    - Dorian created the whopperflower Albedo! As to why, it's still unclear, but I really hope we revisit this storyline. (It's been 500+ long... long days....)
    - remember how in the beginning this kid asks us to find his father? Well, it's an actual quest you can still do in game, and, spoilers, you do find his father but with no memories. Many assume that it's Dorian that shapeshifted into him to start being among humans, but I personally think that Dorian instead experimented on him to create the whopperflower version of himself/Albedo, since it doesn't really seem like Dorian has any actual shapeshifting abilities and that Dorian and Albedo are supposed to look either really similar or the exact same (given Dorian is the prototype, so Albedo is based on his appearance rather than Dorian being based on Albedo's)
    - some people assume we saw Dorian in the recent Windblume event (2023) as he was, once again, behaving a little weird, but who knows!

If you want to discuss more about this event, let's become mutuals on Twitter! You can find me at showsiick, I usually just post my art there but my DMs are open always.

Hearing about this model in Genshin sort of reminds me of Warframe. From when I started playing it until a friend told me "hey there's this cool looking game we should play", things were already different. Then we stopped playing for a while and when we came back, sure a couple of Warframes were added that were the typical "farm parts to get", but also a new special one that required your 'frame to become infected, let the infection grow, and treat it in a new part of your spaceship that was previously unaccessible. Then we didn't play for a while and BAM Archwings, special suits designed for a new kind of maps, with their own weapons. And then BAM a special space ship you can build with friends that allows you to have one friend piloting while the rest move around it. Then BAM Plaines of Eidolon, a complete Open-World map with a bunch of stuff to do. And just recently I saw about a new update that adds a new "playeable character" that's not a 'frame, with a whole new story, gameplay elements, weapons and what not.
And to top it off, it's one of THE best communitties in gaming I've ever found. Even in PvP I haven't found a single toxic player, in fact I met someone who was destroying me, asked him what 'frame was he using, and he added me to HELP ME FARM FOR IT.

And its made by design. The forced DAILY LOGINS combined with ONLY 15min playtime is the real problem! It's a designed conflict which will annoy many players after the honyemoon phase. Some can adapt to it, but most break. Again its a problem by design to force you to either quit, spend money or stay bored.
Remove the forced daily logins and the conflict is gone. Weekly or monthy logins are fine. This would allow us to take a break. Casuals should be annoyed by this as well. Daily logins are not chilling. Even at work we get free days and weekends. In my opinion daily logins should be forbidden by law.

As someone who played Genshin for awhile, its a fun game, I quit cause like Necrit said, I tried hard and sped up the game. I loved the story and that was the biggest reason I stayed. But eventually I hit a point in the game where I was caught up with story, all I did was log in to do dailies and log out, it was a feeling that I got on the game to do a chore (dailies) and the fun wasn't there. So for those who are thinking of going back to Genshin, or want to play it. Do it! its a fun game nonetheless, just play at a pace that suites you, cause if you rush yourself ahead of what you need like I did, you can find yourself getting pretty burnt out really quick. That and the biggest issue with Genshin is, lets say you're a new player, and region X just released, if you see a character from Region X and get them from the banner you cant build them up if you dont have that region unlocked as all they're materials to level up is from that region, being bosses, etc. So you'd have to play thru every main-quest line til you reach that region

Exactly what i say. Games that have a working game-loop/endcontent don't need events - or at least not as much as genshin. After completing the game the events are all thats left in genshin - thats it, thats all - so they are forced to have much more of these than any other game. Thats fine during the honeymoon phase but gets very stale/bad after the first or second year.
And events are not always active. Combine this with forced daily logins and nothing left to do after 15min playtime and you get bored people who start to hate the game besides wanting to love it. Its a artificial conflict by design.

I spent 3 months farming in 1 domain to get something, ANYTHING, nice for Childe...yeah I quit the game shortly after as the story tanked in quality and the lack of proper end-game never got addressed.
Also doesn't help that the story is just...not good most of the time. Even when it gets a bit interesting it presents it in a very cheesy and/or rushed manner. The side-stories and the limited-events have relatively inoffensive stories, but that also makes them extremely dry and boring. Azdaja was interesting, but the story up until the reveal was unengaging at best and the little girl was just goofy most of the time, ESPECIALLY THE MEAN-FACE STOMP IN THE CUTSCENE (I couldn't stop laughing). Also don't get me started on how they handled Signora and how jarring Scaramoch's new player introduction is. Liyue is also dead set on beating into you how grateful people are towards Rex Lapis and how they're basically good to live on their own for 80% of its runtime. I am well aware this is whining at a high level, but these events feel soulless to me. It's the same assets you've seen the last years, the same game mechanics of catching, activating or destroying something, and also the same enemy/NPC models. Some of the events are literally just fighting the monsters you've been fighting all the time, except now f.e. you get 30% extra damage when switching characters. Because of that, to me around 80% of the events feel incredibly lazy, while the remaining 20% at least implement new game mechanics like the auto-battler, but even that felt mediocre to me because everything from assets to targeting system to overlays was already used in other events.
I'm probably in the minority, but personally I only play genshin out of habit, as Necrit correctly said, it is truly a convenient game to just log in for 20min, smack some enemies around and leave. Anything else is just a drag.

Agree with the huge updates being super underappreciated, 1 half and a month for each update is insane. For the spiral abyss tho 😅 I only do floor 9 and 10 and would love if we actually had rotation of enemies. Theyve been the same ever since I started doing it Im a bit tired (I think floor 12 does change but Im unsure about 11)

9-12 always change? They’re the only stages that change every few weeks.
Unless you’ve been playing for less than a few months I don’t know how you can’t notice new enemies being introduced to Floor 9 and 10.

veteran players of genshin especially F2P ones are only numb to rotating game modes in Genshin because the rewards they provide are assyou usually get about 1 or 2 crowns to get an ability to level 10 and roughly about 5 Pulls worth of primo-gems. That is the main issue people have with genshin events it doesnt feel rewarding participating in them. unless you're new and participate for the heck of it~
put theres also the perspective of players that went to genshin to avoid other games. like you go and play tft have a 10 game loosing streak where you hit bottom 3. only to be reminded of that BS in genshin during the autobattler event. so on and so forth~

Idk, more times than not the story of genshin was pretty bad, apart from the recent caribert quest which made me confused because the dude has conflicting responses when it comes to Caribert’s well being but it made sense after the story, but apart from that quests it has been pretty bad since most quests are plague with overbloated non skippable dialouges, the annoying “Interpret” system that wants you to interpret the situation in only one way which also slows down the story, and it mostly focuses on NPCs that no one cares about. I still don’t know how the majority of players feel any emotion towards the death of a certain NPC they just met an hour ago. Genshin has great character and world design along with a good set of music, but what it never had is a good story… It had a good amout of lore but never a good narrative.
I find the minigames fun since I play with other people, but when alone they are not interesting specially the recent ones besides the rhythm minigame.

Other games have a working game-loop/endcontent they don't need new events every month.
I would prefer 80% less events and have something to do whenever i want to do it. And by the way: events are not always active and its by design. Cause while they force you to log in daily. They want you to be bored occasionaly after 15min playtime, so all thats left to do is "pull the gacha trigger (not time gated)". Daily logins should be forbidden, weeklys are fine, but not dailys (they are not casual by the way).
