***** The thing I was wondering, of all hybrids, he chose one of the slowest(slowest being the 1NZ-FXE). If you actually want a pretty quick little hybrid, the 2GR-FXE is a badass V6 hyped on some batteries. I don't know what Toyota did to this particular hybrid system to make a stupid amount of torque from the batteries alone, but holy hell. Some black magic if you were to ask me.

My gf has a Prius. Its a great commuter car especially if all you do it sit in traffic crawling at 5mph everyday. Quiet and comfortable and $20 of gas lasts two weeks and has a lot of amenities. Lowering it and making it uncomfortable is just stupid. Calling it a bad car because it doesn't cater to us enthusiasts is stupid also. A true enthusiast can find something to love about every car and I love how quiet and smooth it is around town.

Well, i think it was a marketing thing that they were making it to be some kind of savior car. It just meant to be a fuel efficient car and it does that very well especially in a city environment where most of the time the car is idling. I know a small diesel engine car and achieve better mpg on the highway.
my tank costs $25 to fill up and lasts me a good while. And I drive a 99 malibu. Don't need that Prius life.

Actually, when someone says, "Hey! I modified it for autocross." Then you check out his wheelwell page and to me, look at the pics, and then see the pics of the Prius at car shows instead of autocrossing. I am going to call out the owner and say the is setup for stanced car show and obviously not autocrossed before.

What makes a car guy isn't the car that he drives. It's the passion he has for his vehicle. I see too many times where people who want to be part of the club run out and buy cars just to fit in or be cool. Their not really car guys at all but they want to look the part.. you start talking to them and see they dont really know much about cars or just kno about the mainstream cars. I see this alot in BMW guys, Subi guys a bunch of other guys... we all kno the typical tuner cars (list them here). No creativity. Its like people are scared to work on a unusual platform thats not automatically loved by other people . They rather buy a car that people already like or that their friends accept.
The car tuner world has less and less diversity or creativity. For those who think people don't modd pruises your living under a rock. There's tons of modded pruises in Japan that are pretty nice. This is why the Japaneses tuner culture kills our in style... they build different cars. No one laughs their all appreciated. They Have different styles. While everyone here is running after the same cars.. same wheels... same build setups. Its getting old fast and I will be the one to say it. I would love to take a look at a modded Prius if it was the only one in the show compared to the 15 evos, 50 civics, 30 BMW's.

I was completely agreeing with until you stated "BMW and Subaru guys." I've yet to meet a Subaru guy that bought his subie just to fit in. I personally bought my Impreza because im a huge Rally guy. My favorite Rally car is actually the Lancer Evolution, but the Evo is way over my price range of anything I could ever afford, so I got the next best thing that wouldn't completely break bank my Impreza. I even had a 2g Eclipse GSX that I just sold to buy my Impreza. And let me tell you I've only had my subie for a month and I already decide that it will be my coffin lol.
I gotta admit, the side shot you used in the thumbnail pic is pretty dope. When you lower it and give it nice rims and some tint, the profile of the car is pretty nice looking. I can't blame the guy one bit for this car.

I just don't understand all the hate. Sure, its a Prius and we're all supposed to hate it because we're afraid of being judged by our peers. It wouldn't be my top choice for modifying, but props to the owner for doing his own thing. That's just my unwarranted opinion.

CarsandCameras Well, the guy *did* say he "set it up for autocross" and yet it rubs like that with just spirited driving? It's all suspension and tires; did nothing else (maybe... I dunno... brakes would be a good investment). On top of that, the suspension appears to be super hard, which would be terrible in an autoX environment. Well, here, at least. Our parking lots aren't that great.
All in all, I say that to say this: I think there'd be a LOT less hate on the vehicle if it had been modified *well*, not just had some aftermarket bits thrown at it and showcased on a popular car channel.

Me and my buddies once got all day passes at our local kart track (a lil less than a mile long, 9hp karts around 50mph top speeds) We were mopping up, just killing all the other people renting karts (read: children at birthday parties) until this one dude showed up and absolutely made us his bitch. Couldn't even hang with him for one corner, over a second a lap faster every single lap. After his fifteen minute session was up, dude got out of his kart, went over to his Prius and drove away.
That was a sad, sad day in my life.

mrkthmn I think the Prius is quite fast at red to green lights. Better is the CT200h as it's the luxury Prius. Totally how it should be. I think the newer Prius they cost cut somewhere. Maybe reliability is quite gone to promote better gas mileage such as using thinner fluids for lower viscosities. Their warranties are cut shorter I think than they used to be but I'm not entirely sure. Used is totally the way as some cars already have over 600k miles on them. You will save the most amount of money this way than any other method. Imo, the truck is the dumbest method if it isn't for work. Some people like to ride big and have thoughts about being physically superior so they don't die when they get hit which is imo irrelevant and a waste of good efficiency. A smaller SUV would be more practical especially if it's a hybrid. I mean, if the person is super big then of course they need a bigger vehicle than most.

I consider myself a well rounded car enthusiast. I can confirm, someone can still be a car guy and drive a Prius. I do all my preventative maintenance on my cars. Fluids, filters and most DIY projects. I generally do subtle but tasteful mods with each car I've ever owned. As a car guy I appreciate each car for what it is. The Prius is a good little lowkey car for around town. It's fun to drive in a sense that it feels floaty and disconnected but don't get me wrong it's boring as hell. Hah. It's also one of Toyota's most reliable cars. Multiple Prius have gone well past 500k miles on original engine and batteries. Amazing. I would never mod a Prius to become something it's not but everyone has a different taste.
I've owned a Porsche Boxster, several Mercedes from C class to S class sedans and coupes. I've owned a C5 and C6 Vette. Both were Lemans blue. A couple MR2s. Random make and model econoboxes and buicks. A couple WRX STIs. A 2SS Camaro. Lexus LS430 and ES330. A side note, every single sports car I've owned has been equipped with a manual transmission. As a car enthusiast, I'm dying to try the new 10 speed autos found in the Mustangs and Camaros. They seem like game changers.

I can't dislike the video because it is educational. I'm serious, it's a good way of showing the general public how to NOT modify your car and to choose your platform wisely. A Prius does not make a fun daily driver, much less an auto-cross performer.
Despite all the track monster specials in Japan, this guy said it was a Prius set-up for auto-cross and it failed miserably so there's no need to bring those up as an example.
To help with your autocrossing vision, hitting the gym would also help with the weight reduction in that vehicle.

+Ricardo Meléndez yeah, I'm not sure what this owner was doing. With that much anti-roll and stiffening work done, to autocross, you need more ground clearance and softer dampers. This guy has gone for stiff springs and very hard dampers, which is more of a track setup

The larger 17 inch wheels can help a lot even for a bone stock Prius.
I got a 2015 Prius Persona Series myself, and with those 215/45R17 Michelin Primacy MXM4's, it grips surprisingly well. Add in the fact that the Prius's curb weight is just a hair over 3,000 lbs, and it's more like a hybridized Matrix (they also share some architecture, like the anti-roll bars from Matrices plug right in to a Prius).
I will say though, it takes a LOT of time to get used to the Prius and learn to take it to its limit.

Encinal Canyon road is an amazing road :) drove it in a Dodge Charger and then a Wrangler 4xE with Ma and Grandma riding shotgun and backseat both times. Love it out there

Lowering a Prius is not a bad idea. The lower it is the less turbulence there is under the car at speed. The "slippery" it is to air resistance. BUT getting it so low and using the wrong wheel setup so that it rubs when you turn is the problem.

Not a problem in Florida. There is no pot holes to speak of and there is not real huge inclines. On of my cars only has about 4 inches of ground clearance. Nothing rubs and nothing drags on the ground.

Part of the fun of this video is a genuine attempt to tweak a car which is one of the tinkering averse cars out there given the complexity of the synergy drive.
Even the most mundane of tinkering such as turning off traction control is a task that presents a challenge. Therefore, to modify it is a feat unto itself, whether or not the end result is a car vastly different from the base model.

It would prove very difficult to upgrade anything in the Prius. The electric motors, inverter and ECU controlling them are all apart of the transmission.
It's also an Atkinson engine that its speed and load is heavily affected by what the computer demands. It's prime function with the cams deliberately let open for a bit during the compression cycle so the power or expansion volume would be greater than the intake volume. The exhaust is meant to be cold for emissions reasons, so that's no help. Cold intakes wok though.

Actual performance showed little difference.
There are years and years of threads of drivers autocrossing their Prius, and honestly the best thing they did was just improve the cornering; Tires, weight reduction, rear sway bar and tire pressure (one owner on priuschat experimented 50/43 psi offered best rotation and removed most understeer).

I drive a 2002 Saturn S-Series sedan. I know what you mean by SLOW.It is an automatic with no mods other than a speaker and radio upgrade. Car is fun in the twisties tho, and gets 38 MPG..and is paid for!!
