  • In the first episode of "Assassin's Creed: The Real History" we look at the story behind the man known as Blackbeard.
    This series will be a way for me to shed light on the real history behind characters and events that are showcased in the Assassin's Creed video game series. Throughout the video I will be comparing real historical moments to those represented in the selected game.
    If you have any events or characters that you'd like me to cover in the future, please be sure to leave it in a comment below.

      from what I've researched it said that he took 5 musket ball wounds and 20 sword lacerations, not 26 fatal wounds. I'm a collector of swords and in a sharpening incident I took a sword laceration. That doesn't mean it's fatal. The number of wounds taken also doesn't lend to how badass the man was. Caesar took 23 reportedly and he was an old guy in a toga. Definitely badass though

      I know the feeling. When AC3 came out I had an American history test coming up. My mom told me "shouldn't you be studying?" I told her "I am". When I got the test back I got an A. Thank you AC franchise.

    This was really well done. I found the progression of time in the game to be a bit rushed. A couple of hours of plundering and suddenly 4 months have passed in game. Thatch suddenly has a beard reaching his chest yet Kenway hasn't aged a day. I would have liked to see Kenway, and the other character age more along with finding them out at sea or randomly in locations, triggering a cut scene where you board their ships or sit down to a drink and hear stories of what they've been doing since the last time you saw them.

    • @whodatninja439
      @whodatninja439 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      to this day I wish this had been a 100% pirate game. No sci fi, templar or assassin stuff. Just a proper 30-40 hour bittersweet story about the downfall of piracy, like RDR2 was to cowboys.

    • @Zerath0
      @Zerath0 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think the delivery of story in this game could have been better, for example the part where Blackbeard dies. You just sail to specific area on the map, then teleport to different area, do a simple trailing mission, board a warship and watch a cutscene. Then you are teleported back to the main map where you left.
      I remember when I played that mission, feeling a little sad after watching Blackbeard die and that melancholic music playing, but then I was back in the Caribbean and suddenly my crew starts to sing some up-lifting sea shanty, kinda breaks the immersion.
      And overall the whole story feels like I am just watching cut scenes, not participating in what happens in the game world. I mean, when you are fighting in that warship with Blackbeard, his npc character doesn't even fight, it's standing on the Jackdaw.

    Brilliant stuff - you've done a wonderful job of using the game to present a short and very accurate history lesson in an accessible way. I am in complete agreement that the Assassin's Creed series is a great way to learn history. While the games sometimes divert a little from the true path of history, it's often at worst just a matter of timing. I hope the series continues to be as true to the historical record as it has been.

      funny thing, this time period, not a whole lot of "awesomeness" in a way. Most of what people think of the "Golden Age of Sail" and such happens 100 years later.
      good point though, a good video about any tall-ship generic type could be good. Getting tired of explaining to people that by having only two masts, the Jackdaw, no matter how powerful (and indeed she is), is no ship of the line.

    Just to bring on a little extra, before he started working in Queen Anne's war he worked as a sea/sales man. Besides his father worked with repairing shoes and he was born right in 1680 so you were close about that one! Anyways you could have been a little more detailed about his death because you do know that he was shot two times in his chest by pistols and stabbed/cutted about twenty times by the soldiers's swords right? Without falling or anything! But for so then to get pumeled in the face by a axe? The axe part was the first and last time he fell during the battle. The soldiers and their captain said this and wrote about this afterwards. Anyway besides from that i must say good work! Doned some good research there mate! Just let me ask you something: where did YOU get all this info? Because i'm looking for as much as possible for the history book i'm writing :)

  • @kingbyeah5407
    @kingbyeah5407 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm posting this comment to state what I know before I watch the video. Blackbeard was the ultimate badass. It took three ships to think him, I think it was three, and he was shot five times and cut twenty, yet was still killing a great deal of British soldiers. His real name was Edward Thatch and he was a privateer for Queen Anne for a time. Edward Thatch started his pirating "career" serving under Benjamin Hornigold, and during that time he wasn't known as Blackbeard, just another pirate. In 1717, he captured La Concorde, a large French slaving vessel. He renamed it the Queen Anne's Revenge. He added 40 extra cannons to it, making it one of the most powerful pirate ships ever. To keep up appearances, before battle, he would dress all in black, put on a large pirate hat, and strap several pistols to his chest. Then, he would put slow-burning fuses in his hair and beard, which surrounded his face in a smoke, making him look like a "devil". Blackbeard, at one point, in 1718, was ready to give up his life of piracy. He turned himself in and asked for a pardon, which was accepted, but soon after changed his mind. Blackbeard extorted the Governor of North Carolina, loot for protection. Researches believe they have found the wreck of the Queen Annes revenge off the coast of North Carolina as well. Now I'm going to watch the video and see if there's much I missed.

    Fun fact: it took A LOT more wounds to hurt Blackbeard enough to take his head than what the game showed.

    I'm born and raised in North Carolina and Black Beard is considered an important part of our history. Really like this video and AC 4. The only thing that bothered me as a North Carolinian is when you completely butchered the pronunciation of Ocracoke. Nice try though..

    Blackbeard was the Billy the Kid of his time. A good guy with a bad (but legendary) reputation, but only killed those who had it coming to them and never resorted to violence unless absolutely necessary, if intimidation didn't work. What kept him from being a "hero"? ......money. And the British >.>

      InvisibleTeeth bartholemy roberts aka "black bart" was far worse than any, save for rock "roche" braziliano or o'llonaise, but they were 17th century. black bart was one of the most sucessful pirates in history, second only to drake.

    • @rexultimatum2588

      A Shore Bartholemy Roberts was indeed one of the most sucessful pirates in history. Drake was more of a privateer though, as he plundered for the English Monarchy rather than for his own self.

    WHICH SHIP DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST THE JACKDAW OR MORRIGON ,BECAUSE I CHOOSE THE JACKDAW CAUSE IT'S CAPTAIN MADE IT UNSTOPPABLE. MAKING EDWARD KENWAY A LEGEND, AND A MORE ABLE SAILOR.

    • @utoresa5193
      @utoresa5193 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so,the morrigan was created to be better than the jackdaw.Edward is a more experienced captain than shay but shay is a better fighter.

    • @utoresa5193

      +Thomas Owl It would be tough fight for sure,but I feel there is more evidence hinting to Shay winning.He is more experienced as an assassin and is better trained overall,he also managed to beat adewale (he was old though),so yeah even though I prefer Edward,shay seems a bit more impressive.
