I've worn several gold Olympic metals belonging to Josh Davis, a swimmer, at one of his clinics held at my high school. The feeling of all of those heavy metals around your neck is one like no other. I took a picture with him afterward and he said to everyone before pictures started that he would have everyone wear his gold ones, however he was to wear the silver one, since that is his favorite. I will honestly never forget that clinic. We were given shirts and he signed mine with "Gina, you rock!" And then his autograph. I also got a chance to race him, and I lost. Racing an Olympic swimmer was the most memorable thing in my life. THANK YOU, JOSH DAVIS!!!!!
That's awesome. I always liked the look of silver metals myself but then again that's because I'm not a fan of yellow gold in general. I've known a few olympians myself but never wore the medals; maybe someday I'll get back into archery and get one myself ;)
Not really a question, but perhaps Olympians' mental health? How stress and pressure leads to psychological illnesses (eating disorders, depression, anxiety, addiction, etc.). Great job, looking forward for the Olympics series!
Actually it was a reference to the sponsorship from CBC - CANADIAN Broadcasting Company?? They only sponsor Canadian things, because they were the first and their slogan is (or it was at one time) "Proudly Canadian"
Usain Bolt Uh, Canada is the second largest country in the world... We have more than one accent. However the most prevalent accent is indiscernible from the most common American accent.
Four dollar bronze medals for third, and *meteorite-infused silver* for two places up? HARSH! But I guess that, whenit comes down to it, the physical medal isn't what the focus is on... the true prize is the recognition for the incredible feats of one's willpower, tenacity, and strength of evey kind.
Hello I'm from the future and the 2020 Olympics were cancelled and now are going to be taking place in Tokyo in July-August 2021. They were postponed because of the pandemic
Could you make a video on scientific careers in the Olympics? Or a video that specializes in the types of sports sciences in general and the careers associated with them??
I can't wait! My question for your series: Which country performed best at the Olympics if you would correct for inhabitants and financing of the athletes?
AMAZING OLYMPIC FACTS! With the excitement surrounding the Olympics, we've decided to release a new video EVERY DAY, starting Feb 6th. Check out the first episode here: th-cam.com/video/fOyO6l75GU8/w-d-xo.html What are your burning Olympic science questions? Let us know with the hashtag #ScienceSays
JB Huerta The growing hormone (GH) stimulates long bones and muscle growing so we gat taller and bigger, specially during puberty when there's this GH peak. Basically that .
***** It's more like how capsaicin in chilis tricks your taste buds to tell your brain that it's hot. Mint and menthol will do the opposite and make you think it's cold, while there is no temperature difference at all, like what a endo-or exothermic reaction would cause.
Are the "bronze" medals given their $4 value based off of what they are made of, because, one would think that an Olympic medal would be worth an... amount more.
150000 viewers. What epic numbers that must have been back in the day. And today? Your video "What if you stopped going outside" (the first video on the left of the various recommended videos) already has 3625612 views! To be fair, that's not comparable for a single-window-of-opportunity live event, but still.
Compared to the number of Televisions available at the time this number could be in comparison to gangam style because 150,000 Televisions in the early 1900's is probably all the TVs made at that time
Love the Olympics but I will abstain from watching this year bc of Russia' homophobic policies. Aside from that, thank you ASAPSCIENCE for the fun and informative videos!
My question is: Why some nationalities or ethnic groups fare so much better at some events, and even the Olympics at whole? I know it's cultural, but what cultural pressures give rise to these things? Why east Africans are good at sprinting and west at endurance? Isn't it all just running? Shouldn't the same pressures push more or less equally for both? Why USA and China seem to need so much to win in the Olympics while India or Japan doesn't? These kind of questions...
Pretty sure it's genetics, but that doesn't mean that every black person is faster than a white one. Training plays a huge role, as well as government support for training and investment. That's why you don't see many latin Americans in the Olympics :/
OOchriOO No, this is how it was *probably* pronounced in Athens of the 5th century B.C. There were many different dialects and alphabet variations in ancient Greece. The word "gymnos" was not used only in Athens and the Olympics were not an Athenian-only event. On the contrary, it was the event that united all ancient Greeks. As far as I know, there is no reason to accept the Athenian accent as "correct" or superior. Also, the Athenian dialect evolved too. We know that people have been speaking Greek in Athens from the 2nd millennium B.C. until today. For good measure, in the age of classical antiquity (5th century B.C.), Athenian history was at least 4 times as long as the whole US history!!!
Stavros Sachtouris I know this, but I think that the pronunciation I proposed is the closest to a philological one, since we are almost sure of it and that during a panhellenic event like the olympics attic greek was the "lingua franca", and 5th century B.C was the "akme" of ancient greek. Anyway as far as I know there weren't really big difference in pronunciation between the dialects, often the vowels changed, but not the pronunciation of the vowel itself.
5 rings represent the 5 continents in the US we say something else because some how we consider America as two continents when America is only one continent. South and North
I'm feeling queasy about this video, I mean I love the AsapSCIENCE channel so much, and Mitchell and Greg, but I really don't support these winter olympics, and already felt uneasy at the fact they were making a video about it, and that feeling worsened when I learnt they'll do 19 of those... I understand there's a sponsorship in the middle and things aren't easy, but still, do you guys wanna spread this image that you're fine with Sochi and the Russian anti-gay laws, cause it's sort of what you are doing...
hmm... this is a legitimate concern, but I think it's still super important for us to support our Canadian athletes in this international competition. No, I don't think Greg and Mitch agree with the anti-gay laws in Russia, but it wouldn't be fair to the Canadian community if we completely boycotted this year's olympics.
Jilly_Bean Absolutely, I agree, but there's a bunch of steps between boycotting and publishing 19 videos around that theme... sammy2629 Yes of course! Which is why I feel queasy about it in the first place, it would be more understandable if they weren't...
I still don't understand why having traces of marijuana disqualifies you from Olympic medals. If anything, marijuana impedes an athlete from performing better. Its less harmful than smoking tobacco or drinking alcohol...
I LIVE IN THE BOW VALLEY AND WE ARE ONE OF THE FEW PLACES TO GET CHINOOK'S PLEASE CAN YOU DO A VIDEO ABOUT THEM AND WHAT CAUSES THE MOUNTAINS TO WARM UP THE AIR SO MUCH THANKS
The bronze medal is an alloy of copper and tin because that's what bronze is...
Correct
Basically a bronze medal is just a giant penny.
WoW! Sooooooo lucky!
That's awesome. I always liked the look of silver metals myself but then again that's because I'm not a fan of yellow gold in general. I've known a few olympians myself but never wore the medals; maybe someday I'll get back into archery and get one myself ;)
Good luck for that
Gina DellaSalla Dang... your paragraph here... wow. lol I'll use something like that next time someone does that. (;
Olympic fact. Don't drink the tap water in the Sochi hotels.
😁😁 Then what are you supposed to drink? What did you like most about the Opening Ceremony Ann? I loved it all! One of my new favorites!
ASAP science
Dont drink tap water in any hotel on another continent! (sometime even on your own) :-)
What an interesting shade of silver.
Not really a question, but perhaps Olympians' mental health? How stress and pressure leads to psychological illnesses (eating disorders, depression, anxiety, addiction, etc.).
Great job, looking forward for the Olympics series!
Haha I want a meteor medal!
Heard your interview on CBC radio, super excited to watch the rest of your Olympic-themed videos!

The water coming out of Sochi hotel sinks is yellow. - Olympic Fact
You mean golden ;)
Strange that this "fact" was proven fake the next day it was reported, by people just kept repeating it like some kind of retarded parrots.
I love your Videos! They are professional, informative and I love your drawing style! ^^ Pls don't stop, do your thing! ^^
You're Canadian?! Awesome!! :D
Actually it was a reference to the sponsorship from CBC - CANADIAN Broadcasting Company?? They only sponsor Canadian things, because they were the first and their slogan is (or it was at one time) "Proudly Canadian"
***** Also, KATE is not a guy's name.
Usain Bolt Uh, Canada is the second largest country in the world... We have more than one accent. However the most prevalent accent is indiscernible from the most common American accent.
WOOHOO MORE VIDEOS! Thank you both so much for all the hard work you do, I can't get enough of these :D
You could say that the new 1st place prize is,
Outta this world XD
Yay! Everyday videos! I absolutely love these.
Why do we not honor the original greek tradition where if a country was at war they weren't allowed to compete?
america: oh no
That was actually SO informative. And congrats on partnering up with CBC! Woot! #canadianpride
Awesome!!! I love these videos!
Why do we get stomach ache?
The guy above you stole your sandwich, so I guess you're just hungry.
Congrats on working with CBC, that's really cool!

Just found out about the channel. Good job with all the videos!
Does yawning and/or not yawning affect sleep and tiredness?
Could you make a video on scientific careers in the Olympics? Or a video that specializes in the types of sports sciences in general and the careers associated with them??
I read "Amazing Olympic Farts"...
read it 3 times
During a baseball game in the Olympics player: (farts)
Sounds awesome, i love this channel even more now.
Oh Wow was it a coincidence I
Got a Olympics commercial before this video
Ads are usually based on the content you're watching, so it's not really a coincidence.
fastimes420 I did not get any ad
Omg now I am soooo excited!!
@0:30 doesn't copper and tin make bronze?
copper is an element so no.
***** yeah that's what I thought! So the bronze medal is bronze! ASAP science finally got something wrong!
Julie Cooly He just said what bronze was made out of. He wasn't inferring that it wasn't made out of bronze, he was just explaining what was in bronze
Daily videos? Dude, I can't wait!
Bronze is made of copper and tin? No way!
I can't wait! My question for your series:
Which country performed best at the Olympics if you would correct for inhabitants and financing of the athletes?
why does time fly while you are having fun?
"Great job, astronaut, war hero, and/or Olympian! With your help, we're gonna change the world."
I want to watch the episodes now, but then I'll spoil everything for when it's uploaded to TH-cam :'(
I saw this yesterday on cbc!!
"Can video games improve Olympic performance?"
Yes please do this video, this will be a good one!
OMG A video every day for 19 days?!?! I may just explode in excitement!
Does laughing make you live longer? Because apparently it does
Asap uploads video DROP EVERYTHING
Why is the silver drawn as blue?
clarissa izaguirre says who? Also grey could have been used.
Maybe they just didn't have a grey marker.
That's bad preparation on their part.
I saw this on tv yesterday!!

how do we get taller?
JB Huerta The growing hormone (GH) stimulates long bones and muscle growing so we gat taller and bigger, specially during puberty when there's this GH peak. Basically that .
Joaquín Alonso Córdova Linares thanks
Why does mint make your mouth feel cold? #sciencesays

More about the medals! ...and, and Olympics stuff!
Are the "bronze" medals given their $4 value based off of what they are made of, because, one would think that an Olympic medal would be worth an... amount more.
It has to be simply the value of bronze. Like you said, the fact it would be an official olympic medal would increase its value many fold!
Ah, thought so, thanks.
They went from Commie to Giveme. So they take as much as they can from everything & put it in their pocket. HA!
You guys are working with CBC? Awesome!
On average, how much does a country pay to host the Olympics? And most money ever spent on it?
#ScienceSays
Winter Olympics are almost here , my school is having a competition for which class can decorate their door the MOST Olympic themed
Did anyone else briefly imagine a special event where the 72-year-old has to hit the evading 10-year-old?
^^^ that comment tho^^^lol
Can't wait to watch all the other videos ;P

that's fair. I know that absolutes do not mean all that much if used like this.
Still, it seems insane.
Yaya. I love the Olympics. Love these facts :)
Why do people have different taste in food?
OMG THIS IS FRIGGING AWESOME!!!!!!
ur videos are awsome..
i have one question for u......... how our headphoes ties in our pocket....
#ScienceSays could you do a video about evolution? Love your channel to pieces, Thanks!
Love the Olympics but I will abstain from watching this year bc of Russia' homophobic policies. Aside from that, thank you ASAPSCIENCE for the fun and informative videos!
Amazing video, as always.

Why some nationalities or ethnic groups fare so much better at some events, and even the Olympics at whole?

I don't think it's genetics...
If it were this, every place with this selective pressures would have this kind of effect...
genetics may inffluence 10%, effort the other 90%; it DOES inffluence, but the amount of effort you put in something always stands out over genetics
Let me explain... If it was just this, why no aboriginal Australian sprinters or endurance runners on the Olympics playing for Australia?
No, but it's a big nation... Bigger than, I don't know, Jamaica...
So So happy you've partnered with CBC! Lets go Canada! =)
why do we wear makeup? or... why do we care about appearance all together?
I like that you do this and could you do a video on crew, or rowing if you didn't know what is was. It'd mean a lot to me.
Gymnos is pronounced yee-MNOH-s and actually means "naked". Trust me I'm Greek :p
I think it makes more sense to read it as it would have been read in ancient Greek, so Gü-mnoh-s
