    I've worn several gold Olympic metals belonging to Josh Davis, a swimmer, at one of his clinics held at my high school. The feeling of all of those heavy metals around your neck is one like no other. I took a picture with him afterward and he said to everyone before pictures started that he would have everyone wear his gold ones, however he was to wear the silver one, since that is his favorite. I will honestly never forget that clinic. We were given shirts and he signed mine with "Gina, you rock!" And then his autograph. I also got a chance to race him, and I lost. Racing an Olympic swimmer was the most memorable thing in my life. THANK YOU, JOSH DAVIS!!!!!

      That's awesome. I always liked the look of silver metals myself but then again that's because I'm not a fan of yellow gold in general. I've known a few olympians myself but never wore the medals; maybe someday I'll get back into archery and get one myself ;)

    Four dollar bronze medals for third, and *meteorite-infused silver* for two places up? HARSH!
    But I guess that, whenit comes down to it, the physical medal isn't what the focus is on... the true prize is the recognition for the incredible feats of one's willpower, tenacity, and strength of evey kind.

      ***** It's more like how capsaicin in chilis tricks your taste buds to tell your brain that it's hot. Mint and menthol will do the opposite and make you think it's cold, while there is no temperature difference at all, like what a endo-or exothermic reaction would cause.

    My question is:
    Why some nationalities or ethnic groups fare so much better at some events, and even the Olympics at whole?
    I know it's cultural, but what cultural pressures give rise to these things?
    Why east Africans are good at sprinting and west at endurance? Isn't it all just running? Shouldn't the same pressures push more or less equally for both?
    Why USA and China seem to need so much to win in the Olympics while India or Japan doesn't? These kind of questions...

    • @joaquinalonsocordovalinare8159
      @joaquinalonsocordovalinare8159 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty sure it's genetics, but that doesn't mean that every black person is faster than a white one. Training plays a huge role, as well as government support for training and investment. That's why you don't see many latin Americans in the Olympics :/

    • @lloydgush
      @lloydgush 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think it's genetics...

    • @OOchriOO
      @OOchriOO 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it makes more sense to read it as it would have been read in ancient Greek, so Gü-mnoh-s

    • @StavrosSachtouris
      @StavrosSachtouris 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OOchriOO No, this is how it was *probably* pronounced in Athens of the 5th century B.C. There were many different dialects and alphabet variations in ancient Greece. The word "gymnos" was not used only in Athens and the Olympics were not an Athenian-only event. On the contrary, it was the event that united all ancient Greeks. As far as I know, there is no reason to accept the Athenian accent as "correct" or superior.
      Also, the Athenian dialect evolved too. We know that people have been speaking Greek in Athens from the 2nd millennium B.C. until today. For good measure, in the age of classical antiquity (5th century B.C.), Athenian history was at least 4 times as long as the whole US history!!!

    • @OOchriOO
      @OOchriOO 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stavros Sachtouris I know this, but I think that the pronunciation I proposed is the closest to a philological one, since we are almost sure of it and that during a panhellenic event like the olympics attic greek was the "lingua franca", and 5th century B.C was the "akme" of ancient greek.
      Anyway as far as I know there weren't really big difference in pronunciation between the dialects, often the vowels changed, but not the pronunciation of the vowel itself.

    I'm feeling queasy about this video, I mean I love the AsapSCIENCE channel so much, and Mitchell and Greg, but I really don't support these winter olympics, and already felt uneasy at the fact they were making a video about it, and that feeling worsened when I learnt they'll do 19 of those... I understand there's a sponsorship in the middle and things aren't easy, but still, do you guys wanna spread this image that you're fine with Sochi and the Russian anti-gay laws, cause it's sort of what you are doing...

      hmm... this is a legitimate concern, but I think it's still super important for us to support our Canadian athletes in this international competition. No, I don't think Greg and Mitch agree with the anti-gay laws in Russia, but it wouldn't be fair to the Canadian community if we completely boycotted this year's olympics.

      Jilly_Bean Absolutely, I agree, but there's a bunch of steps between boycotting and publishing 19 videos around that theme...
      sammy2629 Yes of course! Which is why I feel queasy about it in the first place, it would be more understandable if they weren't...

    I still don't understand why having traces of marijuana disqualifies you from Olympic medals. If anything, marijuana impedes an athlete from performing better. Its less harmful than smoking tobacco or drinking alcohol...
