Watch a full tutorial as a 2001 GMC Sierra / Chevy Silverado will have a Sony XAV-AX1000 Double Din Touch Screen Radio installed. In this video, we are showing how to convert the factory 1.5 Size Din dash bezel into a double din dash bezel to accommodate a touch screen in the factory location.
This video applies to GMC / Chevrolet (Chevy) Sierra / Silverado / Suburban / Yukon / Tahoe / Avalanche models for years 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. This video also includes dash trim and stereo removal, wiring, installation, and testing.

Just put in a radio in my 02 Silverado 1500. The install was pretty easy, the only trouble was running the microphone and the 2 rear usb cables. Now to design and 3d print connectors for them. :)

How well did the Metra bezel work? The bezel on Amazon has terrible reviews about the clips.
@jeffreydonahoo2588 just use factory clips or purchase new ones. If clips are the worst part of the review you're doing pretty good. I ordered the cheaper bezel. From what I read they all have the same fitment issues. If it becomes a problem I'll just do some custom work and repaint it. No biggie
Heard sometime that steel center bracket inside where the radio went needs cut out on some HU.

Good morning, I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT 4x4 Extended cab and when I purchased it (used) it didn't have a radio, sooo... My question is what do I do when someone cut the radio harness all the way back to just under the steering wheel? I want to install a double din like in this video. It also doesn't have speakers. Should I just go to a junkyard and look for the complete radio harness or just add wire to the somewhat existing harness?
im trying to get sirius radio to work on my newly installed sony. you dont mention any cables for this. do i have to also purchase a satellite radio vehicle tuner? and how would that hook up?

Hi Cris, I got a Sony XAV-AX150 and I got it wired to the plug to the Sony but I have a blue wire and two from the Sony called "reverse in" and REM OUT. What do I do with those wires? I'm putting it in a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado.

yes you can. the wire harness is compatible with any aftermarket radio

I am seriously considering this unit for my 2002 2500HD (9 inch version) but just saw that Apple carplay requires it to be wired. That is not a deal breaker, but my new car has wireless Apple carplay, and it sure is nice. Any units by sony or anyone else with wireless carplay? Great job on explaining the install though. Thanks
Try searching for a Joying head unit. I have a 10 inch in my 10th gen civic lx and it’s amazing, and I think they should have double din sizes as well

The kit fits any standard double din chassis, so as long as the radio you want to install has a standard double din chassis, then yes.
your sterio box says it has andriod auto but the one linked on amazon says it does not. can anyone help me out

Is there any way to paint the new bezel gray so it matches the rest of my dash? My old bezel was also gray. I’m not a huge fan of the black bezel.
Yeah, you can buy the paint color at almost any automotive store and paint it yourself. Or you can find one at the junk yard already painted.

Why do others show having to change the internal metal frame that holds the deck and climate control to the dash? I don’t get that, if all you need to change is the plastic over their front like here???

Where were the yellow and red wire running from? I’m pretty sure this is a common thing to do on 2002 Chevy’s to get correct power due to that amp in the glove box
No need to run manual wiring for 1999 - 2002 vehicles as they hadn't yet migrated to a canbus system. The harness has constant 12v and accessory in it, and the use of a harness adapter (linked in description) is what you will need for wiring. 2003 - 2006 moved to a canbus system, and a smart harness is required going forward.

Well it depends, constant 12v on the Metra 70-1858 harness adapter is yellow, red is 12v switched accessory and black is ground. Either you have the wrong harness, or sounds like you may have cut the factory harness off.
If you have the control buttons for the stereo on the steering wheel and want to keep them functional what's the plan
Just gotta connect it on the wiring harness but not all aftermarket stereos are compatible with it. You’ve just got to find an aftermarket stereo that supports your steering wheel controls.
How do you find out if you have a factory amp? Not sure which adapter i would need.
You would see Bose logos on the door panels. If no Bose logo can be found in the vehicle, no factory amp.

If you have a facotry amp, you will see the Bose logo on the front door panels. No logo, no Bose amp. Sony doesn't make a decent navigation radio, but here is one that budget friendly with on-board nav: amzn.to/3m5ZEsh
Okay I have an issue, my radio sound turns off then I turn my headlights on. It’s the same radio and it’s a 2000 siearra. I had to redo the factory wiring. The only colors not matched is the dark greens cause there is so many
Sounds like a wiring issue to me and something isn't right. We suggest visiting your local audio shop for assistance.

Bose logo will be either on the door door panel or not. No Bose logo, no factory amp.
i installed mine and everything worked perfect except phone calls, it comes out of the front left speaker only and sounds like it’s coming out of a flip phone, any suggestions

Depends on the radio that needs to be installed. Some installs, if the radio is deep full double din, yes, we have had to cut the dash. In this install, since the sony had a single din smaller chassis, we did not need to cut anything.
Test fitted a pioneer double din it didn’t go all the way in and the dash bessel would fit good on the left side but it wouldn’t sit right on the right side even with the stereo off the Bessel would hit the left side of the stereo

@@musty.diesel If the guts of the radio take up the entire double din space, you have to cut out the metal brace behind the radio basket and also trim the radio basket to make it fit. The head unit in this video has it's guts crammed into a single din container, allowing it to clear the brace without modification. If you really wanted to, you could even put the radio used in this video into a single din dash kit, albeit it'll look extremely ghetto and could easily be stolen.

I have a 03 chevy suburban an ever sence I got my Sony ax 5000 my battery has Ben draining an won’t start unless I jump it so could it be the person who installed it did it kinda wrong so now my electrical system turns off then turns back on even when I’m driving but car dosnt shut up

Either locate a new factory harness to reattach and do it the right way, or Google your stereo wiring diagram for your year.
If I were to get a bezel from an 04, 05, would that work instead of buying an aftermarket bezel?
The cutout for the heating and air controls are different on the refreshed 2003+ model unfortunately. So it really just doesn't fit correctly.
Can anyone help me out, 1999 Yukon Denali with Bose, I swapped in an aftermarket unit in place of the factory radio and used the metra harness all wired up easily and have power to the whole system, but my issue is The Volume is Way Too Loud at like 1!? Am I missing something some kind of module, interface, Special wiring harness? Aftermarket unit has 2 RCA outputs, everything works fine but sounds Overpowered. Not ready for amp and sub add-on just yet so don't want to bypass.. TY

I installed mine and wired everything per the diagrams. I have one problem. I have a 2001 GMC Yukon XL meaning I have 6 speakers in total only 4 of them play sound/music the middle section/row doesn’t play. Is there a solution for this?
what is the difference between the 03 bezel and an aftermarket bezel? I have an 01 silverado and I have access to an 03.
Also do you need to use an 03 radio bucket, or does the kit allow you to use the original bucket?
GM redesigned the dash in 2003. It is not a directly swap which is why the dash bezel conversion is suggested.
The ac control won’t be an exact fit on 03 an newer is a little thinner and wider but and you would have to adjust the oem 01 ac control downward a tad bit still doable

For years 2002 and older, in order to do a standard double din, you will need the dash conversion kit.
So did you have to set anything up or was it all just pretty much plug and play?
As plug and play as the harness assembly we did in the video.
My silverado has a tape deck below it that is separate from the radio. Does that affect anything when installing a new radio?

Convert the AM/FM antenna input to one which works with the new aftermarket radio.

We had a single din chassis with a double din screen. Because the chassis was smaller, we didn't have to modify the sub dash at all.
Were did you got your side brackets?? Or what size ?

The Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon didn't get the new body style until 2000. You would need to follow a guide for 95-99 trucks.
Could you just trim the factory bezel and not spend over a hundred dollars on cheap plastic? If you can get the brackets separately is there any reason why that wouldn't work?
Depends on how you want the end result to look like. If you want to hack the dash and are okay with how it looks, go for it.
Just a thought. You could sell your original OEM dash on eBay for around $80-$200 depending, which would cut the cost down nicely.
Exactly what I was thinking, just wish I had an idea of where to cut for the best result.

If you do the dash conversion, any standard double din will work, regardless of screen size.
What do you mean by standard double din... I wanna fit the BIGGEST standard double din I can lol
@@GabrielTheTH-camr radio chassis size, irrelevant to the actual screen size. Screen size could be upwards to 10+ inches (float mount screens) and still have a standard size (4" tall) double din chassis.
Too bad the aftermarket ones have the smooth finish and not the "wrinkle" finish to match the rest of the stock trim.
You didn’t mention the possibility of factory amp being a thing at all why is that?
Because the radio installed works with all trims, not just the base trim.

You don't need a full dash piece you can use the metra kit for 2002 cadillac escalade kit for yukon,chevy,escalade I've installed it plenty of times
2002 and older have only a din and a half opening, not a double din opening. Unless you cut the OEM dash bezel, you will need the kit.
@@ProvoBeastAudio from 1999 to 2003 theres a kit for double din to cut and looks clean.specially yukons and escalade you loose the wood grain or graphite texture.and they don't make a kit for that.

Refers to the standard size of a radio, whether factory or aftermarket. 1999 - 2002 had a 1.5 din size tall (3" tall) radio, but most aftermarket radios are either 1 din (2" tall) or 2 din (4" tall) hence the need for a dash bezel conversion for those that want a touch screen in your GM.

8 agree its not a double din install only a large screen single din ...I installed a double din pioneer touch screen in my 99 silverado trimmed the opening a little 5op and bottom added custom side panels it looks like it came like that. Your video is informative and if you want it to look super clean okay but I was more concerned with keeping my original dash beze and avoiding the cost of Metra bezel and then buying paint to match the interior but great job
It's shit, this applies only to 2003 onwards. Not as the title of the video said. a double din stereo, does not fit in the 99-02 pikc-up.
