George, Lotus at the time used a CNC controlled punch machine called a Trumpf Trumatic to cut out their sheet steel parts. It could pick up different sized and shaped punches but if the hole was an odd size or for long cuts it would punch repeatedly with a small tool to cut the shape or edge. This gives the nibbled effect you found.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Figured it had to be mechanical Jeremy, really interesting thanks for that. No way they were doing it with hand tools. The two folded returns on this cradle were cut from the larger sheet in the same way. The whole edge is nibbled like that! [goes to see if there are any Trumpfs on ebay]

Listen mate, I absolutely love your videos, I love the fastidious effort, I love the creativity, this is what initially brought me to your channel. But I continue to stay, because I simply like your positive attitude and the way you approach a task. I guess what I’m saying is, you are a guy I’d like to just sit in a pub and have a beer with, so the world needs more of you. We so appreciate your cinematography and perseverance in getting things just right, but you should consider a balance between more content and less frequent eyegasm magic that bottlenecks videos. If you would ever consider doing some videos in America, I have a 63 Saab 96 that’s waiting to be the star it can be. I’ve considered a rally tribute car, I’ve also considered storing the three cylinder two stroke motor on the shelf and doing an EV project. I’m getting off topic here. We love you man, more of you and your lovely projects. I think it’s time I finally become a patron, this is the top five shows I get excited about.🍻

My old woodshop teacher used to tell the class, "measure twice, and cut thrice."
The students would always laugh at him for it. But I could tell he was serious. So I asked him what he meant. He told me, "first you measure and mark, and then measure and mark again. Then you rough cut the larger pieces of unused material out of what you're cutting. Then you take a rough cut of the general shape you want, while trying to get close to your line without going over. And finally, you use a finishing tool to make your cut exact."
This is one of those mantras that will never leave me

Your doing a great job! Keep up the good work!
When you talk about being patient, it resonated with me. I try to tell people that, sometimes, fast is slow and slow is fast. I worked with a guy that used to say "If you do not have time to do it right the first time, when will you have time to do it over?" I did not agree with that guy on many things, but I had to agree with him on that.
When cutting metal with a jig saw, I found it useful to lube the blade with paraffin wax. I would just rub the block of paraffin over the cut line, that way I always had a continuous supply of lube.

5:04 That looks like overlapping drilled or punched holes - with not quite enough file work afterwards to straighten out the sides. each little nibble has a nice round radius to it. You can drill holes like that close together fairly easily if you stick with a really short bit so you don't get any noticeable deflection as it breaks into the hole next to it - and use a drill press so you can ensure it's all held really rigid. It's going to want to kick or grab when the hole starts to merge with the one next to it.

Your spot on with the words of advice concerning work ethics, my best friend and father-in-law both masters of their trades installed on me.

Nice work, I am always running int not have the correct tools and end up spending more for them then for the project itself 😆

Right on, it's part of the patience thing. Just get frustrated if you bang your head against not being able to help it.

her is an idea use the a similar piece of aluminum (the oval shaped that you cut it out ) taper the edges and press it through with dual bolts with plate resting on the big aluminum plate to punch it through, wouldnt that work cleaner ??

I use the cheap step drills from Lidl for 8€ the set. The material quality isn't great, but for the occasional hole here and there they are good enough.

Just a thought: I know you want to stay true to the build, but seeing the image of old and new panels together, and seeing the original welds, would you consider completely seam welding this chassis for better rigidity? The original panel weld looks like it has 5 inch spacing with a big gob in between. That Spand out over the whole panel properly wouldn’t add much more weight overall compared to the benefit.

Def a thought, and I'm not sure I'm understanding properly but the interval between welds is about 2.5cm - 3cm at a guess. I don't think it needs more, but worth some thought. Thanks

I would hazard a guess and say that the work you are putting into this car is far and away better than the guys at Lotus did.

Well I wouldn't say that, it'd be wrong I think, but I appreciate it! :)
