    Oh George. Your undying positivity and "stubborn" insistence on making due with what you have at hand, if that is how it has to be, is a breath of fresh air compared to all the channels who just go "So we went out and bought this $40,000 second hand CNC machine.. what a bargain!"....

      To be honest, I am not. Don't get me wrong, I more than grant George his satisfaction and will be grinning ear to ear with a tear in my eye when he proudly drives it for the first time, but for me this cannot take long enough. There are plenty of videos of esprits rolling around, although few of them are as pristine as this one will be. But I just love Soup's style of taking the long and right way, not shying away of all the learning he goes through getting there, including making mistakes. All wrapped up in a unique documentary form filled with his specific type of (great) humor. The longer it takes, the better. Luckily, the welding machine company seems to agree :-)

    A trick for the oval holes.
    You can get these really cheap handles that hold a hacksaw blade at one end and make a kind of tenon saw out of it. Well, you can cut down a hacksaw blade with a grinder until its REALLY thin like a scrollsaw blade and use of those handles. If you're careful and patient it works great and hacksaw blades are cheap as.

    Instead of tacking the 4 plates together with the welder just clamp them together with a set of mole grips and drill them on the pillar drill. You'll need to rotate the table so you can work around the clamp. This is actually better than welding as you don't need to cut them apart and clean up at the end. i would also drill using the step drill as you can do it all in one hit, plus it will deburr the one side.

    For that crack in the pedal box mount - no need for a welder. Blend it out. It looks to be no more than 1/8" to 1/4" deep. So grind out the cracked area, then use files to make the radius of the cutout to about 1" (radius not depth) (use the edge of a £2 coin or similar). Finish with some scotch-brite. It'll be as strong as ever, and stronger than applying a tiny weld on the edge of a flat piece of metal, which would set up uneven stresses.
    Whilst you are there, because those plates do hold the pedal box, which means that when you are using the pedal in anger you'll be putting a lot of stress on those particular edges, its a good idea to go over the whole edge with a file and some scotch-brite and shave off about a 1/16" from the whole edge, nice and smooth. That'll take out any micro-cracks that you cant see.

      @@soupclassicmotoring I have been rebuilding a 20 year old Sprinter van during lockdown, there's loads of videos on my channel, there's some difference watching TH-cam videos of other people doing builds and actually doing one yourself, in 100 years I would NEVER have anticipated how much work actually goes into it!!! Keep the vids coming, I ADORE your channel kindest regards from Glasgow

    George: Excellent work. You are not afraid ov diving rite in. Bravo. Keep the vids coming. How do I add 3X to any repair time...I film it. With stop action, you must add 10X or something close. Maury, 316 Automotive.

    BTW George - do you still have the jar of bolts/extra bits/etc, that you are going to weigh at the end to see how much weight has been shed? Add lightness.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The jar is still there, with that first one little bit of metal in it :)

    Can can put the flat part in a photo copier or just put a paper on it and use the part as a guide for your lines.

    George, I know you aren't a fan of stop motion, but stop motion is awesome. I understand that it takes too much time, especially if you take a single shot after every operation. If you set the self timed auto shoot? For example every half second, so you can focus on your work and then you have the footage for the videos. Might it be a good idea?

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I devised the series I assumed that an intervalometer would do that for me and I'd be free to simply duck out of shot, but the reality I found was the work doesn't have any respect for the interval between shots, and I was getting caught in the frame again and again. It quickly became obvious that it was going to be quicker to manually trigger the camera.

    Wouldn't two pieces of thin wood and gripping it by the edges be a good replacement for welding the plates?

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah but I don't always see the wood for the trees, the frustration got the better of me ;)

    I know the feeling on the welder - I ran out of gas and my normal supplier is like "we are supposed to get some in next week". Grrr.
    What happened to the TIG? No Argon? The pedal box mount that you cracked would be perfect for the TIG - if it's all cleaned up nice then you don't need any filler rod and you can still work the metal after you have welded it.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its a couple of things, but ultmately if I did TIG it then the welds wouldn't match the rest of the chassis
