- When a cherry (literally) 2001 Jeep Grand Cheeroke falls into your lap, you have to buy it. That's exactly what happened here, Josh sent me a message and said one of his friends had a Jeep he wanted to sell and it needed a new engine. Once I saw the pictures of the interior I was sold, this Jeep has 161,000 miles on the ticker but looks like it has 61,000 miles. The owner delivered it as well making the deal even sweeter. Now we're going to do a quick walk around, see what all it needs, and get ready to stick an engine in it. My first Jeep looks like it might be pretty great.

Do us a favor JR, shine a flashlight down the oil fill in the valve cover. Look at the head between cylinder 3 and 4. If it says "TUPY" then it's the redesigned head. If it doesn't say TUPY, then what happened to that engine is most likely the head cracked due to an overheat, or just general usage. The 0331 heads were prone to cracking. Bought an 00 XJ freedom edition for $1,500 with a cracked head, coolant was leaking through the crack between the 3 and 4 cylinder. I put in a new head, some new hardware/gasket, fuel injectors, and ignition coil; $700 and a weekend later, it fired right up and has been damn reliable as a weekender vehicle ever since (3 years now). But since you're just swapping engines, none of that really matters lol.
If your new engine has been sitting for a while without coolant inside, cycle some thermocure through it. Those 4.0 blocks get rusty inside and can cause the engine to overheat since they're already prone to heat soak. Pretty sure that's exactly how mine ended up with a cracked head.
Saved me some typing. No doubt it's cracked head and it is an easy one to swap. Easier than swapping the engine for sure.
@@WoodMotorsports Yeah, gotta love pushrod overhead valve. No need to set any timing or valve lash. Just gotta worry about torque specs. Wonder though how long this engine has been run like that. Might make more sense for JR to just swap the engine as that's a pretty easy job on these XJs too.
It's going to be a lot easier to sell it with a proper set of OEM headlights lights.

There’s a very strong chance it’s not the engine that is bad.
The security system in the ecu may be bad.
Do compression tests and other troubleshooting tests before ripping out the engine.
Sounds like bad compression on crank. Bad security SKIM would start and die

I've had so many vehicles not start because the security system failed in some way or the crank angle sensor went the way of Joe Biden
I would definitely scan the SKIM first and then start troubleshooting the engine if there aren’t any codes.

Two things on the 4.0 ...
1) check the crank position sensor (mounted on the transmission bell housing) - if it's bad you'll get crank no start. Only install Mopar as a replacement. The store brands don't work.
Symptoms if this is the case are airflow, fuel pressure, spark, and dry plugs - the PCM shuts off the injectors.
2) after a dead battery, the 4.0 will NOT idle if it starts. You'll have to feather the throttle with your foot until the PCM relearns things.
I agree on all points as I own a 4.0 and I had to replace the oil pressure sender a couple of years ago and tried using the one i bought at the parts store and it didn't work so I ordered a mopar one and it has worked just fine.
On number 2 I thought something was seriously wrong with my jeep after my battery died cause it wouldn't idle at all but I did a google search and did what I read and it has worked just fine since
6:29 - that might be the one cosmetic thing I'd go ahead and spend on with this Jeep. See if you can find some used OEM lights that still look decent. They'll perform way better than those Ebay knockoffs.
You'd be surprised but on one of the jeep forums that had a section for WJs some of the members couldn't understand that essentially any headlight assembly that wasn't oem was trash.
The possibility of an engine swap reminds me of a true story from some roofers I once knew. They were using an F250 and a tandem trailer to haul loads of used shingles to the dump. The engine in that F250 was a 300ci straight six and they ran it into the ground over a number of years. When the engine finally wore out somebody had the bright idea of replacing it with a 302 V8. They were never happy with the 302 as it didn't have near the torque of the 6 and they blew it up before they got 6 months of use out of it. The 4liter (258ci) in the Jeep is a time proven reliable engine with the torque band where you want it for going offroad. If this one has to be replaced I would be looking to replace it with another straight 6.
It wouldn't be a WatchJRGo flip if it didn't need hatch struts.

Hey idk if this helps any but I noticed when you were turning it over the key locked turned on. They have a chip in the key that will go out commonly keeping you from running the vehicle

The Cherokees overheat because the fan relays go bad and people continue to drive them without a fan. Replace the relay with the an OE. Jeep sells the relay as a kit, it mounts behind the bumper under the right side headlight. I’ve replaced a few after replacing head gaskets. Nice find!
I would much rather see you diagnose the engine problem before just replacing it. It makes for better content in my opinion.

You can drop that 4.0L here in Rose Hill, I'll rebuild it with my son! Some of these engines had an issue where the skirts would break on the piston.

So the 4.0L will crank for days but not start with a bad crankshaft position sensor (ask me how I know). You should definitely check that out before ripping the engine out.
A good friend's grandfather designed that motor in the early 1960s at the very end of his tenure as AMC's chief engineer. Floyd Kishline had a lifetime in the car business and put the superchargers on Grahams in the late 1930s. Design things well and they will be around forever. 7 main bearings and enough cylinder head bolts will do amazing things.
I had a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4. I LOVED it! I was t-boned by a Semi and that Jeep saved my life. I have missed it ever since.
I used to have one of those, same color, same engine, all of it. Thing was an absolute BEAST in the snow. The 4.0 6cyl still ran like a swiss watch, but mine had rust and that's what scrapped it.
I love waking up in the morning and watching JR with my bagel and coffee. Also my buddy had that same car with the same head gasket issue. Was able to get the head surface replaned and a new gasket. Worked great until we drove it in a deep puddle and hydro locked it. Good times
Yes, Josh! And thank you for serving! Spring for a JNC 660 or higher. I gave up on replacing the lithium ions every year. Old school definitely better in that case.
Should be either a 4.0 or probably a 5.2/318. I see the 4.0 as I type and it should be easy enough to find and probably everything else still works. You can also tear it down and maybe it just needs a head gasket if it's not warped or something. Good luck with it. The headlights probably are way better than stock if you clean them up. Sounds like the head gasket is done, no compression.

Had a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the V8…. Absolutely loved that Jeep. In four low you could hardly press the brake hard enough to keep it from moving.
Finally a Jeep! My first vehicle was a 2001 grand Cherokee with a 4.7, and I’ve never driven anything else besides a Jeep since
Also, these WJ’s love mopar sensors in them, and they end up needing crank position and cam position sensors all the time. Kinda sucks, but they are great vehicles

I always liked the look of those jeeps. Hard angles without being a box but still sporty. Everyone I knew that had one just destroyed them which was sad.
The used car market is crazy that was it's value 2 years ago running! To me it's easier to pull the head than the engine but if the head is cracked a good core will cost you.
I have a 96 Cherokee country I may be willing to part with. I think it would be cool to see it on the channel. New tires, new brakes, new front calipers, cheap name brand lift kit (don't want to go out in the rain to find the brand) sitting inside that needs installed, recent tune up (plugs, wires, oil), new water pump, new rad, 120xxx miles. AC compressor clutch is awaiting replacement which is holding up the belt.
The funny thing is, when Josh was hmming and hawwing over the passenger rear door opening and closing, that has ACTUALLY happened to me when selling a car. Too accurate. 😂
I bought an '04 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 4.7L and that thing is a beast with the NV242HD and the Vari-Lok. My wife loves it as her daily driver, so much so that she bought a Rusty's Off-Road lift for me to install for her. They are comfortable and fun to drive, plus parts from a junkyard are so cheap because they made some many.
Check for pcm communication , if no communication unplug the Crank position sensor , if it communicates , needs a crank position sensor , 4.0l jeep stuff

I wasn't expecting it to be a straight 6. It didn't sound good cranking. Actually bad lift struts is typically a good omen for you. You bought it right enough you should put a Hellcat Hemi in it and make your own Jeep TrackHawk.
Someone had to have catastrophically overheated that engine. There is no way it lost compression on all cylinders out of nowhere. Those 4.0s are (nearly) indestructible. As the proud owner of an 04 overland with the 4.7 H.O. v8, I can say with confidence that the wj is one of the best suvs of the early 2000s.

I agree on the 4.0 being tough but they don't do well at all when they get hot. Normally a cracked head though.
I'm a school bus driver. At work we use a homemade jump pack. Its 4 truck batteries in a truck tool box on a cart. Works every time lol

Man I gotta tell you. I was a mechanic at a Jeep dealership back in 2001 and when these things came out? Holy hell were they nice. Shesh, even the ZJ (1994-1998 grands) were still REALLY nice places to be at the time. Memories... I miss my 1996 Orvis Edition Grand Cherokee. That thing was nice.
Not to be "that guy" here or anything... but you've got a WJ, and the WJ never had the 360. In fact, the only Grand Cherokee to get the 360 was the 1998 ZJ 5.9 Limited. Not all 1998 Limited were 5.9s, but all 5.9's were 1998 Limited. They made 245hp and 300tq, and while I used to stoplight race 5.0 mustangs with them, they were decently quick in the late 90s, they're not really all that quick... Not sure what this "put it in 4 low" business is, but nobody in their right mind is going to try and race something in 4 low. The top speed of that thing in 4th gear is like 35mph...........

Had a 2000 that was the twin to that with a 2" budget lift and JK wheels. As clean as that one too. It was a great vehicle honestly.

JR you can find the headlights on Amazon for like $90 for the chrome housings (limited, overland) and $100 for the black housings (laredo).
I had a 99 Cherokee Limited with the 4.0 Inline 6. Easily one of the best engines I have ever owned
Jeep fixed the 4.0 problem in 03,it's not a head gasket,the heads crack on the 99 to 02 4.0,pick up an 03 or 04 engine or head but something don't sound kosher with that engine.
No temp and no fuel and no voltage gauges is a bad crank position sensor !
The CHEAPEST? no no no I just bought the SAME jeep for 1k and all it needed was a crank sensor. But I got the full spare and one rust bubble on the hood. Same rims and trim level. still had the factory covers on the seats and weather tech floor mats protecting the carpets. So i will be following this with great interest,
That is a WJ Grand Cherokee, which is 2nd gen... the 360 motor came in the ZJ or 1st gen, and only the last year (1998) 5.9 Limited... the XJ and the ZJ are the jeeps that make you fall in love with jeeps... definitely pick up on of each at some point
You really need to get a hold of an AUDEW 2000a jump starter. They are the best jump starters I've ever used. It will start anything!
Man, used car prices are crazy. A couple years ago that would have been $800 all day long. Its clean, and will make somebody a nice set of wheels.
Definitely check the brakes once it’s up and running. They are a weak point.
My family had a few square bodies back in the day (sister had a 97, I had a 98, and stepmom had a 99), and my best friend had a GC. I still miss the torque from that 4.0L! And that turning radius! You just can’t beat it!
Now I realize where "Fractured Rooster" comes from...Bantam. Looks like that RF fender was either repaired or replaced.

I would diagnose that thing before you drop an engine into it. 4.0 Jeep motors are pretty bulletproof. Check for spark. If it's not happening, check the Crank Position Sensor. Jeeps like to eat those.
If the ECM is good and you have no readings on the cluster, check the grounds going to the block down by the oil filter. I've had them look like they're crimped, but only held on by a couple strands. Jeep would stall and the cluster would lose guages. It would come back to life after the harness was wiggled around.
I miss my WJ w/ 230k. I sold it last year so I could get a truck to haul stuff and it just sat in the driveway. It was my first Jeep. It blew a head gasket, and I got super lucky because it all went to the coolant and no chocolate milkshake and rebuilt the front end after smacking into a deer.

My 98 had that problem of not starting left it on the field she had no lights 1 workin door and the catch randomly flew opin but gave us a day of fun

I have two '99 models. One has a locked up engine, good trans, the other has good '01 engine in it and a bad trans.. haven't had the time to work on them yet. lol.
clean one i had was a 2001. Some of the last of the great Jeeps. I6 motors were legendary
You should buy a ZJ Grand Cherokee and build it up as a toy, they are stupidly capable with the 4-Link suspension setup they have from the factory, tons of flex. That'd be a fun build then you could sell it off for some money
I had an 02 grand Cherokee when I was stationed in Germany. I drove that thing everywhere in Europe. From Munich to Amsterdam. I always get nostalgic when I see one of those grand cherokees.
Wow! $4000 selling price sounds niiiiccceee. That makes my '02 Overland Edition in Inferno Red Pearl worth go waaaaay up! Nice WJ! Definitely should pick up some nice used OEM lights. They buff back to clear real nice.
I have a 2001 WJ here in the UK. It's the 4l straight 6, fully loaded with leather interior only done 44000 miles. It's really tidy though has a little rust around the plastic trims over the front wheel arches(common fault ). I notice they have been removed on yours and probably filled and sprayed.
I’ve owned 2 of those Jeep WJs with the 4.7l v8 and both croaked (one at 226,000) (the second 165,000). Really burned oil and eventually the timing chains just clock out

I bought one of those brand new in 2001, it was a real nice car. By all means, don't get the V8. It was a piece. The six was as it's reputation says was terrific.

4.0 with no gauges and a crank, no start means crank position sensor. They eat those f'n things for breakfast.

Only older Grand Cherokee that had the 360 was the 1998 it was a option. Has factory hood vents. Kinda like the srt of the past.
If it's a bad head gasket, those engines are a doddle to fix. So long as it hasn't been overheated (warping the head and block), seriously just change it (and others as needed, ie: valve cover gasket) and it still will be a quick turn around for you. :-)
Can’t believe the prices these days. My mom sold her 1 owner 2000 Grand Cherokee v8, in perfect running order for $1700 5 years ago.
4.0's are as indestructible as any other engine. Chevy, Volvo, Ford, Buick, AMC, Jeep, Dodge - only engine that required work before 200k was my 2000 4.0 grand cherokee Laredo
D&E in the Garage might be able to suggest how to charm that 4.0 to life
A 4x4 Laredo Grand Cherokee that's in decent cosmetic condition, and it even has the 4.0 in it. This one's definitely worth saving!
I had an '03 Dodge Durango with the 4.7L V8, and that thing was a nightmare. Original engine had blown head gaskets, then the junkyard engine I bought was badly neglected and full of sludge, so the timing chain tensioner failed after only about 500 miles. I grew to detest any Chrysler truck with a 4.7 after that.

I agree with what you said about flip motors being cheaper to swap than fixing the existing one, but this motor has only done 8k miles a year. Being so clean, my guess it was well maintained. I would diagnose the existing motor and see what it needs before installing a mystery motor and pawning it off on someone. If the "new" engine shits the bed, you're gonna hear about it, and you have a big YT presence to consider now. Just saying. Do a compression test and scope the cylinders and diagnose the cylinder head to see if any exhaust is getting into the coolant. Just sayin
Sure about the headgasket? Sounds like the cam chain broke. The engine has a very "flat" sound when cranking.
Those inline engines are fairly bulletproof. I’d figure out if it’s still worth saving before you scrap it. Jeep lovers will jump on this to buy it when your done fixing it up. It’s not crazy fast but it’s great off-road!

I remember those animated stereo head units from back when they came out! Early 2000s and a high schoolers dream at the time! So high tech ;)
Check the VIN for the recall that requires the dealership to add a hitch to protect the gas tank. I can't remember if 2001 was effected by that recall or not.
I honestly want to buy this Jeep for my daughter. She gets her license in February and it would be perfect.
Why would you want her in a solid axle vehicle with push pull steering? Does she offroad alot or do you just not know how aweful they are on road compared to a independent suspension and rack and pinion steering? Why not keep her safe?
@@16driver16 well she's not a wimpy little girl or anything so I wouldn't be worried about that. I also live in the upper Midwest with a lot of snow, so off-roading, no, but a lot of crap weather to get through.

The ONLY reasons for that solid axle is "strength" and being a Dana30 there isn't much of that and ARTICULATION which if you don't offroad is BAD to have
