    I've had female dogs all my life. No particular reason but it was just a "go with what you know" thing.
    11 years ago I took in Ollie, a male ESS who was causing problems for his family because he was nervous around kids.
    Took about a year to fully earn his trust but then, holy s**t, he just became THE best dog I could ever hope to have.
    Our relationship was, honestly, almost "telepathic".
    he always seemed to know exactly what I was going to do and he'd always know exactly what he needed to do for me.
    For example, if I reversed my car out of the garage to go somewhere he'd hop in with me and sit in the back.
    If, OTOH, I reversed my car out of the garage to work on it, he'd sit on the lawn and spectate.
    I have no idea how he knew the difference but he always did.
    He was 5 when I took him in and (perhaps I shouldn't say this) I don't think I ever deliberately taught him a thing.
    He'd just watch what I was doing and, the next time I did the same thing, he'd just figure out the best thing he could do.
    Last year he developed a tumour on his back which the vet' told me would gradually cripple him.
    It didn't.
    He remained healthy and full of life until the tumour finally damaged his spinal cord and almost completely paralysed him overnight.
    He died in my arms a week ago and I lost the best companion I could ever hope to have.
    I'm not sure when it'll happen but eventually there's DEFINITELY going to be another homeless male ESS out there who's coming to live with me.
    I owe it to Ollie to make a home for another dog like him.

    I've owned three springer spaniels.... one female and two males... and all three were wonderful dogs. I had always assumed that females were a better choice because they would be less aggressive and less likely to roam, but that really wasn't the case. The males were also exceptionally sweet and affectionate. You simply cannot go wrong with this breed. They really are active and energetic dogs, so they will demand a lot of exercise, so if you want a couch potato dog, this breed isn't for you. But they are extremely intelligent, easy to train, and very loyal and affectionate. They aren't the best watchdogs because they tend to like everyone, even total strangers. There are plenty of wonderful breeds, and the Springer Spaniel is one of the best ones.

      Completely agree! Springers are phenomenal!

    • @zeljkameznaric6047
      @zeljkameznaric6047 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The best ones??? The BEST ones come from the BEST humans who tend to them, like you and this girl! HAVING a dog is like having a mirror of your own personality. He copies you at the spot! If you are nervous, he will be also, but if you are calm and wellcoming, easygoing, the dog will be the same way in public and at home. BEWARE, though, NONE of them like to be alone much, but Springer Spaniels, well, Spaniels in general, DO NOT LIKE to be ALONE for a longer period of time, because they cling to you VERY MUCH!!!
      And if they destroy your shoe or chew on your book it is because they are searching for you and your smell because THEY MISS YOU SO MUCH!
      It is uncomprehensible LOVE - they do not see or judge you if you are tall or small, child or a grownup, big and fat, or slim and skinny, rich or poor, old or young, brave or a coward, scared, ugly, or of a profound beauty, short, long hair, or compleately bald, naked or in ruggs, or wearing branded clothes, disabled or enabled, shortsighted or ... Well, shortsighted in an ophtamological way is no problem, only if you are shortsighted in your heart could be a problem, but not even then IF you LET the DOG LEAD YOU!!!
      So, having a loving household means having a DOG because dogs are the GLUE, the CENTERPEACE and the emotional UPBEAT, your EXCERSIZE trainers and your LOVING SUPPORT at ALL stages of your life and your children's lives, too! At the end of this long comment, since this girl was so lovely to talk about the genders - males ARE more affectionate and not that moody, and more easygoing - exactly like us females in our human world. Boys should know that, so PAIR UP with a male in your household, keep that testosteron level HIGH, ha ha ha, to escape being flooded with progesteron and estrogen!!! ONE female boss is more than plenty per household ha ha ha, though they ARE loving ♡♡ and CARRING, that is SOOOO TRUE!!!

    We are bringing home a male ESS next month. I am so happy to hear the males are extra affectionate, that's just what I want! We have a female cat, and my partner did not care what sex the dog was, but I have been dreaming of having a "baby boy" so we picked out a boy and can not be more excited! I know two young adult male ESS that are best friends, and I am hoping to introduce our baby to them when he's old enough.

      You may immediately. It is the best! Show them the baby and they will sniff it and love it instantly. The dogs KNOW and they go into protective mood immediately! Also, they are CAPABLE of telling you that something is wrong with the baby. I DO NOT KNOW HOW THEY KNOW, but they sense with their nose when the temperature of the vaby goes up and they TEND TO WARN YOU!!! Also, let yout dog smell your breath occasionally - he will be able to know if you are sick or healthy! Some teach dogs to speak through that "tap the words" on the carpet. I never tried, but can be USEFULL!! They learn to speak to you in a direct way!!! It is SO amazing to learn that creatures around us share language and thinking and have insight and can communicate what they feel and think with us!!! Immagine the trees speaking to us!!!! Let alone grass... Animals are so genuine and profound! We should just listen to them and try to understand, for they stilk have their sharp senses, although ours have weakend...

  • @paulflak2823

    Over all good explanation, how ever. First thing new springer owners NEED to do if figure out do I want a Bench or Field. The difference between the 2 is energy level, field being true hunting dogs and bench being show dogs. Field regardless of sex are high energy and need lots of play time, in return they are extremely focused on the here and now, so agility training maybe a option if you are not into hunting. Bench are generally more relaxed, and make unbelievably great service dogs, bomb and drug sniffers as a companion friend for anyone who suffers from PTSD, or epilepsy. Males are as stated not as much of "bitch" to deal with. I have had 2 Bench Springers, all male and one field and the differences are very noticeable to the point I turned down female PTSD service dogs that I was offered. But then again that is my life style as a Cdn Forces vet. And if you want to have a truly heart melting experience expose babies to them, train the Springer to love tea parties and love the child. It's worth it!

    • @OSheaSpringers
      @OSheaSpringers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Paul! Yes very valid points which I would 100% agree with! Thanks for pointing this out. Also, thank you for your service to our country. All of our dogs are show/bench bred for the most part. Some of our lines come from Europe where they don't differentiate between the two from what I have heard. So there is a mix there. Thanks again for watching and the thorough explanation and comment.

    Thanks for the comparison video. Clearly there is a difference in stamina and endurance between the show and field/working Springers. It is clear that males are physically larger and with that more physically powerful than the females. Power aside, is there a difference in stamina and endurance between the males and females. Does physical size or male/female influence their stamina and endurance? On a 20-30 mile hiking day (maybe back to back hiking days on a multi-day or multi-week thru-hiking trip) would one tire before the other, or would the males and females be evenly matched for stamina and endurance? Likewise, my chosen dog would also have the opportunity to swim and run alongside my canoe on multi-day, long canoeing trips covering 20-30+ miles a day. A tired dog riding or sleeping in the canoe is Ok, but having to carry the dog at the end of a long day of walking is a different matter. Friends have told me that they have had to carry their dogs out of the mountains in the past. A smaller dog in the canoe (or joining me in a small lightweight hiking tent), particularly on white water or long open water crossings is easier, but does size and sex equate to stamina and endurance? N.B. A Labrador Retriever would have the stamina and endurance for both types of trips, but a smaller dog would be better in the canoe or tent, hence wandering about the stamina and endurance of male vs female ESSs. The right dog will absolutely love and thrive in my world, but the wrong one will hate it and will probably be scared to come on the next trip!

      @OSheaSpringers  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are lots of great opinions for both sides of things. If you can handle your girl going into season and don't mind dealing with that, it's not a bad idea. They do make doggie diapers so they don't drip all around the whole house. Sometimes they can bleed for up to 2-3 weeks. Other people can't be bothered with that and have them spayed earlier. We always recommend 6 months. We've always had good luck with that.

    Lemme add a thing about male as i have a male springer
    Above ALL he don't stay at home and leaving home when he are alone(means don't have another dog at home) and knows any female are in the neighbourhood especially when the female is in heat(i am not joking)
    This one thing is irritating about male but as this is the natural and i am just sharing my opinion otherwise it's toooo much lovely soooo much playful and energetic dog.

      Certainly when a male is left intact he will wander and look to breed. We always encourage people to have their dogs spayed/neutered.

      Hey Mark, no all of our puppies are spoken for already. We're looking at Sept-Oct before we would have a puppy available.

    I’m getting a female from my mothers springer spaniels(: Her fathers name is George and her mothers name is Gigi. They are almost 2 weeks old. Should be opening their eyes for the first time any day now. I’m gonna name her Nala. She has a heart on her back(:

    In all my experiences with dogs, females are more likely to bond stronger with a single individual, and have more drive in my opinion to do what owners want. Where as males, are better for family situations where it will be for a family pet, and laze about... That being said, your dynamic in raising them determines what drive they will have.
    I have only met one female springer, and gosh was she a suck up to her "Male" owner. Than again the Male was the one who wanted the dog, and was eager to treat/ show affection.
    On that same note, I have had tons of female dogs and two males. My females were all very bonded to me, and had separation anxiety when I would leave the house even if my ex-wife was home or left with grandma. Where as all my males were very open to the family dynamic of being around my ex's family.
    To build on that, I found my females all more protective when it came to protect what they knew was "pack" property.
    Being that, that is the way that I have also seen other dog families, I put some good amount of weight on females being more for individuals and males for family situations.

      Oh? What part specifically? I think it's possible you had other music or videos playing at the same time. There was no music playing while 'the girl' was talking. :P

    My males seem to be more happy go lucky. My females have more of a killer instinct when hunting. Never had a bad one

    • @OSheaSpringers
      @OSheaSpringers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I would totally agree with that. Males are just happy happy. Females for sure have more drive. I believe that's just in their instinct to provide for their pups back in the day. Thanks for watching and commenting Jill.

    I consider it a sacraledge to keep a Springer just for a pet!!! Sure the pet part comes as part of the package, but these are Gun Dogs!! And only the Border Collie or the Setter revivals their intelligence!! They can learn over 300 commands! They will never be happy being just a pet. You must spend hours training this dog, and he must be allowed to hunt!!! You have to get rid of that energy!!! Give him something to do even if it's just keeping your checkbook :)
