My female Cocker Spaniel is now 2 1/2 years old. As a puppy she was totally overexcited and ruined my shoes and socks. The whole region loved her because she was so cute to look at and had such a sweet nature. Things got better at 1 year when she started to understand human language. She no longer ran off thinking that I was enjoying it too. When we go out into the woods it's not just a walk, but an adventure. Now she understands everything and has become an angel. She is very attached to me and for a while she can separate herself from other dogs when we go for a walk. That makes life easier. I am very proud of her and we love each other very much.
Love this mini class on Ava, she is such a sweetheart and just loves her human daddy. To me Ava’s hair seems more like the Springer Spaniel in her (at least on screen) it’s so silky. Here in the states you have to watch for poor breeding which causes urinary problems. We also don’t see many Working Spaniels. Thanks for taking us along Joel, always good to see you!🐶💕👍
I spent the happiest days of my life with a cocker spaniel pup. This breed of dog will mirror your every minute of the day, your moods, but beware it will also break your heart when you eventually part company with them. Another cocker cannot replace the one you had and loved either, they are individual sentient beings that are full of affection, fun, heart and soul.
Very useful conversation--folks really need to try to do their homework before choosing a pet/particular breed. I’ve seen so many animals given up/abandoned at shelters because people just chose an animal because they liked the look of that breed. You really have to be ready to take on the responsibility of all the care/needs of that animal and realize that it does take a good bit of dedication for a DECADE OR MORE. As you said the rewards these wonderful companions give back to us are well worth the effort😊❤.
I’ve had a show cocker spaniel and I would have many more. By far my favorite breed I have ever had. She was bought for breeding but was unable to breed due to inverted uterus. Owners didn’t want to keep her so they looked into giving her away. A co-worker mentioned to me the owner was going to put her down. I said no way, i’ll pick her up. What a gift from god, the BEST BEST dog I ever had. Beautiful personality, absolutely never barked, almost too gentle with kids lol . I miss her dearly🥲.
Hi Joel! I discovered your site by chance last week. I get so much pleasure and satisfaction from following all your daily movements and gestures. I would like to point out to you that Ava came into your life when you needed to feel what unconditional love is. She allowed you to heal all your romantic wounds and to get to know Keegan. I've watched a hundred of your videos over the past week and I can confirm that you are immensely happy with Keegan and satisfied with your life now. Ava is your little baby, and she will always be in your heart. Thank you once again for sharing your blog. I love it. Sending you all my love to your best friend from an unknown admirer from Toronto.
I have adored Ava since you got her, and it’s interesting to hear what it takes to care for her. Me, I like a lazy, easy dog, which is why I am on my second pug. All they want is to sleep and cuddle their human, with occasional short bouts of play. Thanks for giving us an Ava primer. May she live many long, happy years with you.
I love dogs, cats too but dogs are special. I really enjoyed hearing about Ava. I’ve had 3 miniature poodles, a corgi, a terrier mix , a Labrador and a Kelpie. All rescues. That’s a lot of dogs (usually just had two at a time) but I’m in my sixties and have had dogs all my life. I think you take such good care of Ava and Finn, which I appreciate and respect.
that's why it is very important to do a FULL research before getting a puppy. 😀 Hopefully all people that are getting a puppy for Christmas did just that (somehow I doubt it). I live in an apartment and always wanted a Cockerspaniel, so I did lots of research (potty training, behaviour, allergies, grooming, training, etc...) and finally got one last year and that was the best thing that happened to us. Expect the lifestyle change but you get lots of LOVE back that outweighs everything! Best therapy ever and you won't even mind going out in the downpour @ 5:30 am so they can do their "business". 😂 Teach them boundaries and quiet time right from the start. Crate training helps. They bark more than other breeds, but it can be reduced by constant training. Please do not get discouraged if you watch this video. Every breed has their PROs and CONs.
Watching you mime through this video made me smile. It is wonderful that Ava is with an owner that loves her this much. PS thank you for the spaniel infirmation.
I can so relate to everything you’ve said about Ava, having a working cocker myself. As I have recently retired she keeps me moving, although it would be nice to sit down sometimes.
What a fun vlog! All the memories of sweet Ava! I can't believe she is 5! I remember when you got her, and she had the ear problem! Talking with your hands is also very entertaining storytelling. 😊 Always ❤
My dog was rubbing his eye and wouldn’t leave it alone. I couldn’t figure out what was going on. Finally took him in to the vet. He ended up up having a grass seed in the back of his eye. It was about a centimeter long. I almost passed out when I saw it. I couldn’t believe it was stuck in his eye. I am so glad that they were able to have them get it out for him. If you see any strange behavior with your dogs and you are confused on why they are acting that way you should call their vet right away. Something is going on with them, especially if they are not acting normal or doing something abnormal.
I have had 3 American Cocker Spaniels. I still have one of them. They are the sweetest, cutest, smartest and most loyal dog I could ask for. I love them.
Ava still has this puppy-ish face to me, she's just so adorable! I'm always a fan of Ava content. I had a springer spaniel when I was a kid and she was a handful!
I had a foxy/Jack Russell. She was the same as Ava. Ball obsessed, clingy, never stopped and always wanted to play etc…. Barked at everything, but very smart and easy to train. The hair…. I had to sweep the carpet before vacuuming. But I would never have changed a thing, she was the best dog I’ve ever had.
This video spoke to me on so many levels lol! I have a year-old male cocker (show-working mix) and he's a bit on the taller side so I can't quite lift him (female here but I'm sure lifting him won't be a problem for a guy). He still has manic energy levels and I was recently stopped on my walk with him by an elderly gentleman who apparently had kept quite a few cockers in his lifetime and told me there's just one thing that explains their personality and to my utter amazement he didn't speak a word but gave me the jazz hands 🤣I nearly choked laughing as it's so true, my cocker is always vibrating with energy. That's on top of his hunting instincts and his obsessive sniffing (never lifts his head up on walks). I also completely relate to the clingy part - I've been WFH for a year now and he's never been left on his own so he'll go into hysterics if he's left by himself even for 5 mins (not cute at all!). And lastly, grass seeds are my very personal nightmare! He had one taken out at 8 months of age and it was the most traumatic experience we've both had. Now he won't let me even clean his ears so to all spaniel owners (cavalier, cocker, springer) - watch out for those little devils they slide up their fur so easy taht you won't even notice them before it's too late! But with all their quirks spaniels are the best dogs ever!
From experience from cocker spaniels, my mums dog is now 12 we play retrieve about 10 to 20 times on the field and she is done, before this it was like a Duracell battery that only needed to charge for 5 minutes. At a time.
When I was a child we had a tan cocker Spaniel named Peter. He love to swim, do sleigh riding, ride in the car. He was so strong. His favorite toy was a plastic gallon milk jug. Peter loved going to the dairy to get milk and get his ice cream come. He lived a long life, was very protective of our family and good at barking to chase away bears and snakes.❤
Ava is a cutie, she loves her Dadda! We had a Goldendoodle. Butter, who had ear issues. It helped to have the hair pulled in the ear canal. It wasn't a complete cure, but it helped a lot. It's usually a yeast infection. I would always keep a tube of Monistat on hand in case of a flare-up. I have found it's usually dog specific. In other words, that particular dog had the issue. I've Labs, Border Collies, and Goldies who never had a ear problem, and one of our Goldies used to swim underwater. I have always loved Springers and Cockers. Sadly, here in the US, Cockers got a bad rap of being nasty. Bad breeding during a popularity explosion in the early 90s. The breed hasn't quite recovered yet.
Hi Joel l have a working cocker spaniel called Rosie, she's 5 and she still runs around like a lunatic. She also thinks that what ever comes through the letter box needs a good shake before we can have it. She is a very loving and caring dog. My son is a type one diabetic and when his sugar levels drop she will get his bag that he keeps ready for when he goes low. I have a heart condition where my heart doesn't always get enough oxygen she will keep nudging me with her nose to tell me it's going to happen, even waking me up at night. She has never been trained for any type of medical alert. Love to you, Keegan and the dogs x
My dog too!! Mix show/working, must be strong working cocker genes, he is 99% working traits. Fortunately not a barker but everything else you say is sooo true.
I feel your love and pain Joel, we have a year old working Cocker bitch, she’s the most loving affectionate little dog and we love her to bits but everything you’ve highlighted is spot on, no matter how much exercise she gets is never enough. I used to own a Whippet and he would sleep 20 hours a day lol, so yes you need to give your Cocker a hell of a lot of attention but we would not do without her as she keeps us on our toes. I would still definitely recommend a working Cocker, the most loving beautiful little dogs, videos like this are so informative as you give an honest opinion on your dog and it helps the rest of us understand the commitment you need to have these wonderful little dogs in our lives.🐕🦺👍
When I was a kid we had a wire haired terrier who was EXTREMELY hyper, and barked at anything, constantly. Later, I had a Labrador who was extremely chill. A great apartment dog who never barked, even when the neighbors walked up and down the stairs. She'd only bark if there was a good reason.
I’ve a working cocker and all the things you said are true….boundless energy….if partner and I go walkies ..if I stop behind to tie boot laces the dog won’t go any further until I catch up…..ours is a boy….bull in a china shop….but he wants to be literally SAT on top of you…kisses all the time….but..he does get abit ‘growly’ if you invade his space when in his crate…..Beau does not bark much…only when someone is approaching the house……he did have an ear infection which took months to clear…good job we had insurance with an excess..total bill was around the £600 mark. Also recently he had a Campylobacter infection Pooing blood…terrible…watch out for Ava eating fox poo (we live rural ..that’s what we think it was)…spaniels are the best 🐶🐶
Appreciate this video Joel! I have a 7 month old Field Spaniel … very similar but thankfully Fields have an off switch and he isn’t too crazy but gets the zoomies at night and loves to take off with our shoes and destroy my insoles! Thanks for the hint with that canned air…I’m going to try it! This dude took off on me the other day too..ripped the long lead right out of my hand running after a Chipmunk ran across our street thankfully there were no cars…more long line training!!!
When I was 8 years old, I was given a cocker spaniel puppy for Christmas. Mine was black as well. I named her "Lady" after Lady and the Tramp. She was very affectionate with me, but she bit the mailman so we had to get rid of her.
Look at you, the UK’s new dog whisperer … 😂 kidding aside, this was a really informative video, very well put together. My little guy is a Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix, so I definitely have the barking, but not the ear issues, the daily bath issues, the boundless energy issues, etc. But I know Ava is the sweetest dog ever, so she’s worth all of that and then some! ❤❤❤
Very upbeat, positive and informative. To distract our pugs from outside views we taped up one width of left over gift wrap on the floor to ceiling or other windows. Out of sight, out of mind. However, it does not block sound ; and if they are clever enough to know it is paper ..... that could be a mess of another type. With pugs, we had to clean eyes, ears, and muzzle wrinkles. Always knew if we went too long between baths for Cinnamon ---- she would smell like a corn chip.
I have a male cocker spaniel called Arlo. He’s the same colour as Ava and looks the spit of her too. He’s just gone 4 months old and he’s utterly mental, so loving but full of beans all day long 😂 he’s way better off the lead than on the lead, fantastic at recall and will look back and check we’re walking behind him. He’s the love of my life now 😍 he shows so much love in his eyes, constantly giving kisses and follows me everywhere!
I just love Ava! Thanks for this video all about her! One of my scotties had to be put under so the vet could look at his ear. He had a bad ear infection. He was NOT at all agreeable to an exam. It's the only ear infection he's had (he's 3 years old).
I've got an 8 year old golden working cocker spaniel. He looks like the one in your video sitting next to the show cocker. He's a maniac. He hasn't calmed down at all really. He's not bad in the house bit when out for a walk. You have to watch him like a hawk. He likes to chase anything that moves. he was pretty easy to train. It's been tough at times but I don't regret getting a cocker spaniel for a second. And yes he's very clingy and affectionate. Mine doesn't bark much.
@@garyrobinson8665 My WCS is great so far. She's 7 months now. Been off the lead since she was 3 months. Recall is amazing. Got to make that separation anxiety work for us. She's set to 11 when we're outside but pretty chill inside. Likes to cuddle.
Ive had 4 full blood Cockers. All have been extremely affectionate & 3 were little postage stamps, never wanting to leave my side. I Used to put work off & then work all night to keet deadlines. My best girl was soooo sleepy but she followed me from room to room, faithful to a fault.
I had a girl cocker spaniel called Peanut, I bought her as a gift for a bfs birthday but I ended up with her as he was in the military and couldn't have her full time. She lived until she was 17 yrs old so a good age. I can relate to everything you said except she wasn't a barker but certainly hyper active, not the lap dog i thought she would be! I have just got two cavapoo pup sisters, now 7 months old. 🥰
Ava is a beauty always has been since being a puppy. The barking and grooming is constants with our Shih-tzu. The cost of 45 pounds for a groom is so reasonable to be honest. Worth it for all the reason you said. I took Ella for a groom this week the cost has gone up to $70! I was taken aback. Shin-Tzu’s need grooming more regularly very big expense. No matter the expenses I love having my fur babies as you Joel love Ava.
I love Ava Joel, She's a beautiful and good dog! i want an Ava but i work very long hours and i live in an apartment or Flat! So 1 day when I have my own house and backyard, I'll get a cocker spaniel. I love these. Videos I love all your videos but I like these
Funny I should come across this video ‘cause I have a one year old Pembroke Welsh corgi who I took out last night to do his business and with a flashlight saw what I thought was a dark leaf. He first sniffed it then suddenly jumped back. I leaned over and it wasn’t a leaf…it was a tarantula with its two front legs up in a defensive position. Luckily it was as surprised as he was. Now he’s a bit more weary of sniffing just anything. The joys of dog ownership.😮😅
Who is the hottie in the dark Adidas top holding Ava? He looks a lot more high maintenance than a Cocker Spaniel. Just kidding (he says after watching the vid about your book closet). Thank You for your little slice of happiness. You and Keegan are definitely a joy to watch ❤
My first Border Collie was a flop eared water loving boy. English Cocker Spaniels look so different from the American Cocker, both extremely cute. 🙂🐈⬛🐈💖🌈
I have been brought up with German Shepherds, but 3 years ago got a Border Collie with my partner and never looked back, but you need to walk them everyday otherwise it's hell.
😳 we hv an 8 yr old American cocker spaniel show type rescue. Truth. Re barking and attachment to owner. The grooming 😮 is a lot. Thank you for this video. You are funny 😂
I had a Springer, she was everywhere you were, even bedtime had to be on the bed or on the floor nxt to the bed & the water thing 100% first time at my nanas she jumped the pond (with the fish & frogs), nightmare 🤣 My border collie x german shep was worse for chasing tho, when he was younger he'd run after cyclists etc 🤦♀️ Both dogs had ear issues that had to constantly be cleaned.
I've had numerous springers all rescued , never had a problem not one , and a couple of them are what i would call grumpy , the key is exercise exercise and yes exercise , 2 hours absolute minimum on a bad day , must be off lead . Hope this helps
They are the most loving beautiful wee creatures. If im not married by 50 im getting a wee cocker spaniel as a companion lol. We had our own called Bob grow growing up, and I miss him every day. But they are active and its not fair to have one if you dont go out much or cant go out much, they need alot of space. We didnt have a garden, but my mum and dad would take him out all the time, before work and after work and they get stressed if left alone so be wary of that. BUT THEY ARE THE most beautiful funny furry soft cute cuddly little creatures. They will love you to death.
@@TheJoelWood littleman is right. If something happened to you and you didnt have any friends or family that could take her shed end up in a shelter. If she were from an ethical breeder, the breeder would take her back and either rehome her or keep her until she passed. She would never get put in a shelter

great job explaining about the difference in Spaniels. Ava is a beauty and always great seeing her in your vlogs, Joel. She surely loves you.

Enjoyed!! Ava is still Adorable ❤
Sprockers are fantastic dogs. Don't expect any personal space though 😂
The whole body waggles make me chuckle too
Very upbeat, positive and informative.
Had a cocker spaniel in my youth, I remember she was very hard to train. In hind sight
as you explained it was probably the dogs energy level
Aww look at lil baby Ava! I remember watching all the adventures at the vet too lol. ❤😂
Just catching up with this podcast. Enjoyed your animated recounting of life with Ava. ❤
Hard to believe her age…I remember when you brought her home. Aloha from a lol in Hawaii! ❤
More passion, more passion, more energy, more passion!!
She's just like her Dad, loves balls 🤣💖
I have a 8 month old patterdale and their's no off switch either 😅
I can totally relate to all you've listed here, Joel, especially the putting away of the toy ball. Otherwise, it's high energy 24 7 😂 great video
We just got our fourth English cocker spaniel. Wouldn’t have any other breed.
English Springer Spaniels rule! Love them, had two!
Sweet Ava ❤
I have been brought up with German Shepherds, but 3 years ago got a Border Collie with my partner and never looked back, but you need to walk them everyday otherwise it's hell.
😳 we hv an 8 yr old American cocker spaniel show type rescue. Truth. Re barking and attachment to owner. The grooming 😮 is a lot. Thank you for this video. You are funny 😂
#1 border collies #2 spaniels ❤❤❤❤
I also try to keep my dogs out of dry grass. My one dog gives me lots of kisses my other dog does not. I've try to get him to give me kisses.
We had Afghans growing up - they were high maintenance
Yes my boy Oakley, English cocker spaniel, loves water. I can’t leave ANY toilet seat open. He will get inside the toilet and sit in the water. 😭😭😭
I've spent sooo much money on my Cocker's ears. I had to clean them all the time a smell them as well.
I am sure you are saying all of these horrible things about her because she's a black woman. we have your back Ava. no justice no peace!!!
Had no idea!
Springers are so9 lively and loving and I find not as aggressive as a cocker
Cocker rage and resource gaurding are big problems with working cockers.
Never seen that. Mine doesn't bark much either.
I've had numerous springers all rescued , never had a problem not one , and a couple of them are what i would call grumpy , the key is exercise exercise and yes exercise , 2 hours absolute minimum on a bad day , must be off lead . Hope this helps
You don't get bad dogs, just bad owners. Same with children...
I've a 10wk sprocker nipper he's crazy super energetic
Don't let her play with a tennis ball. I swear my dog got cancer at 4 because he played with tennis balls. Tons of chemicals on the balls.
isnt licking your mouth them trying get you to puke up food, just as their parents do, rather than affection?
They are the most loving beautiful wee creatures. If im not married by 50 im getting a wee cocker spaniel as a companion lol. We had our own called Bob grow growing up, and I miss him every day. But they are active and its not fair to have one if you dont go out much or cant go out much, they need alot of space. We didnt have a garden, but my mum and dad would take him out all the time, before work and after work and they get stressed if left alone so be wary of that. BUT THEY ARE THE most beautiful funny furry soft cute cuddly little creatures. They will love you to death.
You're FULL of doggy-doo Joel! cocker spaniels are baby dolls!
You didn’t even mention Rage Syndrome 😭
My American cocker, Nullah, licked my brain today. She gives all the best kisses!
Nah cocker spaniel are the best bruh dont disrespect that dog breed
Yikes on getting her from a backyard breeder
That’s all very well and good but those puppies need homes too. Or would you rather they got sent to shelters?
@@TheJoelWood i wouldnt but ethically bred puppies dont end up in shelters. The less we buy from byb the less dogs that end up in shelters actually
@@TheJoelWood littleman is right. If something happened to you and you didnt have any friends or family that could take her shed end up in a shelter. If she were from an ethical breeder, the breeder would take her back and either rehome her or keep her until she passed. She would never get put in a shelter
:(
