i havn't seen this movie in a while but im preety sure that the scenes when vito spends time with his grandson takes place in his house on long island. at his private neighborhood. he doesn't travels to italy in the entire movie.

No, he never went back to Sicily after he killed Don Ciccio, but in the book the garden where he died was described as a place reminiscent of Sicily.

You are absolutely correct. I was going to make that comment but saw yours first.

This is well done, but one error. Vito wasn't in Italy when he was playing with the boy in the garden. That was his yard in his house on Long Island, where he had conversatios with Michael, and where he died.

He must've mistaken it due to the filter they used for the scene. It was filmed like that purposely because in the book the garden was described as reminiscent a of Sicily

Great analysis. I learned something new - didn’t previously realize that Vito’s death scene was meant to be in Italy. I thought it was in the Corleone compound, like in the book.

I'm sure the Corleones gave plenty of money to the church. That made their activities OK with the priest.

+Leon Thomas but i still think that while there are many entertaining shows i have yet to see one wich focus on film analysis on your level. i don't want to offend anyone and im sorry if i did but i just dont think that they dedicate a lot of their shows to comprehend the art of cinema.

The wording in the book, which I think is FAR better and more true, is "You can never be a real man if you aren't a father to your children". I don't think Don Corleone gave a damn about whether or not a guy lies to his wife, he would think that was a matter of course.

The philosophy sounds similar to what you brought up in your GoT/It’s only terrorism if it happens to us video when you discussed American exceptionalism. If atrocities are committed by an entity powerful enough to create propaganda justifying those atrocities, then those acts aren’t as bad as someone else doing so. You just need to invoke some concept like “family,” “freedom,” “god” et al and nothing you do can be considered bad. It’s a dangerous mindset and it warrants deconstruction.

Great video, Leon. For awhile in my late teens, I was rather obsessed with this film. I think you summed up the message of the film better than I ever could at the end. LOL

To be honest, I tend to be distracted by Brando's playing with the cat during the first scene. I just remember that scene from the show "The Critic" where Duke is singing to his cat.

Great video. I think most of the Motifs and underlying meanings of this movie can also be found in The Sopranos. I suppose they did this intentionally.
I would love to hear you talk about a couple of movies. How about a video on Mulholland Drive or Tarkovsky's "Stalker"?

+Leon Thomas It was a good analysis but you made a mistake. Vito's death did NOT take place in Italy. Unless you're telling me that he took Micheal's son Anthony all the way to Italy while still acting as Micheal's counsel and living in a place with a back yard that's identical to his in America then no, he did not head back to Italy near the end of the film.

Nice analysis, completely agree with the part about christianity. But...about the gender politics business...I have a different opinion. As an italian university student (I'm about 25 years old) I can safely say that that's how our grandparents talked about women, children and gender politics at large. Our fathers (the now 50 years old demographic) were less arsh with us and I like to think that modernity taught them something but still, growing up only my generation represented some sort of detachment from this mindset. Yeah, there were the 70's but what was happening here during that time period was merely a shadow of what was happening in America and other anglophones countries. A deeper meaning behind the gender politics talk in the movie may be present, yes, but I think it's safer to say that Coppola wanted to depict a realistic picture of the Italian mindset at the time. I hope I was helpful in some way.

Elegant Cat It’s also commenting on patriarchal structures in the catholic faith. There is a lot of comments on Roman Catholic ideals in the movie.

Leon, Have you ever done A History of Violence? I was looking through your back catalog and could not find it. I could have sworn you had. Its possible that it was just referenced in another video.

I like the movie, I haven't read the book yet!
I'm currently researching where did the writers and producers get the ideas and plots for the Godfather?
Prior films, like Public Enemy with James Cagney, showed gangsters as being tough thugs, no family men or businessmen.

No, that scene was good; a nice visual to the director to not screw over the Corleone Family
