I believe all that is due to rising popularity of individualism, wanting to be different from the crowd. People are often offended by their favourite underground/niche artist becoming more mainstream because they believe that it brings their music taste down to "average", "basic", so it's not really about the music, it's about the listener and their self esteem.

I completely agree it’s annoying when people start calling your taste basic just because I listen to some popular rappers with great modern albums but then they don’t even know that I also listen to underground artists of loads of different genres aswell. Those people are just bots and can’t think for themselves and will usually force themselves to like things just because they aren’t popular. But sometimes you can say to people that they have shit taste because some of my friends just listen to the most awful music it actually makes me want to rip my ears off

I used to have this friend who would make a disgusted face when or straight up ignore me when I tried to show him a song I liked or say I've already that one it's kinda ass. He really did make music (and skating) his whole personality, and I actually let him put me on other "unreleased songs" or less mainstream songs from popular artists or stuff like that. After I realized how annoying this kid was I saw all the music he put me on and tbh it was not me you know, it wasn't bad but I just couldn't feel the music in those songs. I love music, I'm even trying to make music just to see if I really enjoy doing that but I would never tell someone that their music taste ass or just bad and then try to change their taste because it's not what I like. At the end of the day, listen to what you want.

I think the mark of a true music fan is being open-minded, but also not being ashamed of what you like. Everyone listens to music for different reasons. I don't vibe with everything I hear, yet, I still adore discovering new sounds (especially when it's someone else who shows me a song). At the same time, I know my preferences and I also know that some of the artists and genres I have on rotation are a little strange to others, so I don't force it on them. Be welcome to those who are interested in a new lane, and learn to let others appreciate what you can't seem to.
PS. My all time favourite DOOM track is One Beer. That drum loop is the most addictive sound on planet earth to me

Absolute facts. I hate when people who act like anyone who listens to popular music, or an artist's most well known track is a loser. I love MF DOOM, and my favorite track from the guy is Rapp Snitch Knishes (closely followed by the entirety of Madvilliany). That riff just goes so hard, and both Doom and Fantastik go all in. Like you said, things are popular for a reason, and I hate these pretentious hipsters who act like every good thing needs to be obscure. True, it's fun to find something obscure that most people don't know about, I friggin love Mindseed and WATSKY, and I bet most people don't know who they are, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy incredibly popular artists, like Tyler, The Creator and Dua Lipa. Music is a beautiful thing, don't be a snob.

As someone who wasn't a big music person for most of my life and only recently started delving into music, I've loved it to a worrying degree. This video came at the perfect time for me because I've found myself over the last few months slowly becoming someone that makes music their whole personality even half-jokingly telling people that. I've found myself feeling validated and "cool" because of what I listen to started to think about how many minutes I stream albums and artists and such. While I think music is incredibly important and adds a lot to personality, I tend to only have my mind on music a lot of the time and nothing else. I need to balance how much I care about music compared to other aspects of life, but hey at least I don't care what others listen to and call it basic or something.

As an avid music (Hip Hop, RnB, Pop) consumer I fully agree. I do not force what I listen to onto others, they probably will not understand or enjoy off of 1 play because they haven't listened and understood the songs as much as I have. I started listening more to what I like, not what others may like. Whether it be Yeat, Youngboy or Mr. West, it is for me soley to enjoy. When someone plays something they may truly love it no matter what kind of tune. I'm not like yooo wtf is this bro turn on some Yeat, I will glady bump along and sing the words I know. Music is subjective, if you find joy from it that is all that matters, don't try to appeal, listen to what you truly enjoy. You explore and find your style.

I do need to say, music is practically my entire life, but that's exactly the reason why you shouldn't sh*t on other people's music. If you listen to music on a constant basis, especially in a niche genre or interest it gets boring through the overexposure. My music taste has changed quite a bit and I'm just happy to discover something new. In a lot of cases, that would also be the so called "basic" music. With the popularity arguments, I find it quite funny that people disregard the most popular tracks from an artist. As said, there's a reason the song has so many views/likes/listens. Stop being so dense. Most people probably enjoy the track too, but just don't want to admit it, because they are "real fans".

I got into Tyler the creator a couple months ago and I was having a discussion with a long time fan. I said that I don’t like most of his stuff before flowerboy other than maybe Cherry Bomb and this dude was so mad and defensive for literally no reason

New DOOM fans gatekeeping his music really missed the whole point of the mask. They worship the mask, not the music. I'm a new DOOM fan myself, and while I love the icon, the music comes first. I'm a jazz nerd, so I'm no stranger to elitists and gatekeeping. I grew up listening to heavy metal, and that genre is no stranger to gatekeeping either. It truly plagues all genres
I feel that judging people whether they are new or not is so dumb. I was first introduced to MF DOOM’s music because of my sister, but really didn’t pay that much attention. I first really became a fan because of TikTok. No, that doesn’t mean I only know his popular songs. Personally, if you really care about an artist, you should be glad that they are becoming more popular and not whine because someone else likes their music
I stopped going to Reddit because of the music elitists. I'm a Lil Wayne fan who enjoys most of his mainstream hits. 6 Foot 7 Foot is my absolute favorite song, and I've also got Lollipop, Go DJ, Mirror, Got Money, How to Love, My Homies Still, and others in my favorites. But I got tired of all the comments such as "His best work is his unreleased/freestyles with no hook!", "You had to be there to enjoy his music when it first hit", "Lil Wayne is a punchline rapper with little to no storytelling!", or people claiming his prime ended any year before 2011. Some fans even act like it's an insult or a crime to like Lollipop! Or if you like one of his features on a more mainstream song, people get so triggered and bring up a rare feature as if Wayne is gonna award them for being a 'true' fan.
As a DJ/music producer I totally agree but at the same time its kinda my job to put people on to new music but also play them want to hear even if its played millions of times on the radio. I'm not here to bash people about their preference on music but step out your comfort zone some times it feels good to find new up and coming artist . At the end of the day music is either your life or you become one of these music personality swine and bicker at someone for their music taste. Great video though allows for great conversation!

And that's crazy because that's true too I mean a lot of new fans are seeing people and whatnot due to their passing I mean I did as the same with XXXTentacion and Juice Wrld... I kind of like their stuff a little more than MFD as I don't listen to him at all as the other two I had mention can seem sad or trash I mean I only got a few of X's songs on my playlist and the same with JWrld if not more but yeah their stories are kind of different but all in all when a dying artist comes forward on the internet people publicly come forward trying to get into their music and whatnot either to pay respect to them, those who may actually know them before their passing that listened to their music or whatever or simply just those who like to hop on that dying train because the media cringly enough decided to push that on them or whatever as it may be a common normal thing to day I'd like to say in my opinion but back then nah, you'd thoroughly have to go look that up yourself just to feel invested in a person you might have not known or really cared about but had just wanted to hop on that weird trendy train because you wanted to feel like you were doing something important... Man it's a crazy, sad, and petty world out there full of silliness but I'd just say to let people enjoy what they wanna enjoy but hope as they get older or wiser (Brain Learning) that they learn to understand and appreciate things for what they really are and not just through some lame trends.
