Panasonic Lumix LX100 Camera vs. Panasonic Lumix ZS100 Camera - 4K Video

  • Panasonic has two nice-quality and interesting cameras that cost around $700 (as of May 2016). How do these two compare and contrast? What are their strengths and weaknesses? If you're going to spend that kind of money, which camera is right for you?
    In this video, I explain some of the differences between the two cameras, and pick the one that's right for me.
    I shot this video in 4K using a Panasonic Lumix GX8 camera and Panasonic 12-35mm lens.

    Bob- Thanks for the video. You turned me onto the ZS100 which I compared to an RX100, ended up buying the Lumix ZS100. Glad I did. So versatile and featured. Pretty excellent value. It will be capturing a few 14ers this year in Colorado.

      Glad to hear I could help. The RX100 is a nice camera, but I haven't used it much. A friend of mine loves the RX100 so much that he paid $250 to fix it after it broke -- I would have just bought a new camera! I definitely enjoy the the ZS100 though, and use it just about every day.

    I'm shopping for a travel camera for an upcoming trek on the Inca Trail and I'm leaning towards the ZS100. This video was really helpful, particularly covering the size differences. I am also considering the ZS70, but favor the larger sensor of the ZS100. I really want something compact with a viewfinder, so I think I'm on the right path.

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The ZS100 may still be available, but there is a new model: the ZS200. You should probably consider that. That said, I have had my ZS100 going on three years, and I still use it all the time and it still works well. Compared to more expensive cameras with even bigger sensors, the photos and videos from the ZS100 are nothing special. But for the price, it takes excellent 4K videos and good photos. I love the easy-to-use time-lapse features -- you can shoot excellent sunset time-lapse videos, for example.
      Good luck!

    This is what I call: A MEAT & POTATOES REVIEW.
    No bells, no dingbats, no whistles, no stupid music, no "sexy" "cool" camera...
    As I can see It's a hard choice between these two cameras, but, as you point it out: It has to be a logical choice, or in case of doubt: buy both!
    The only little regret I have about the ZS-100 is its fixed screen.
    I want to buy this camera for my wife, who misses many a good shot on account of hand shakiness.
    I wish to see more of your testing on this camera (4K video& stills, same as some techniques to get the best out of travel images)
    Thanks for your great presentation, Mr. Kovaks.
    Please keep on clicking,
    keep on sharing,
    have a great day!!

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The screen on the ZS100 is excellent, but having it tilt or swing out would be terrific. The lens is not great either, but it gets the job done and it is a 10x lens in a small package.
      I learned something important about the ZS100 today. I normally keep the sensitivity set to ISO 400 for general shooting of photos & videos. However, I shot in very bright sunlight today, so I set the ISO to 125 -- and the resulting 4K video is superb. It really makes a quality difference going from ISO 400 down to ISO 125.
      You are aware that I have a l-o-n-g review of the ZS100, right? If not, click on my name and you should find it. Other than these two videos on the ZS100, I have no other ZS100 content. But I like your suggestion, so maybe I will work up something.

    Wow thanks for helping me understand so many different aspects mainly the fstop, macro focus and the low end angle differences. I have definitely settled for the zs100 sacrificing the wider low end 4k angle from the lx100 . I would rather the better macro photography for what I need to do with micro electronics and 3d printing. Not to mention that sick 15x zoom versus the 3x zoom. I wish there was a way to add filter for the zs other than gluing but being that I will mainly use it indoors that's not a big deal for me. Subscribed for future videos. Great review

    Good comparisons! I have both cameras, which I think complement each other the way interchangeable lenses do on larger format cameras.
    If I had to pick just one small camera, it would be the ZS100 because of its zoom's greater focal length. If I were more interested in hand-held, low light photography, I'd choose the LX100 as my only camera.

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! The LX100 also proved to be an excellent wide-angle camera for video shooting, particularly with minimal light. I had a project that involved me shooting a local band in a couple different bars, and the LX100 was perfect for the static wide-shot of the band. It was always bright and clear. I used the ZS100 handheld and often zoomed in, but the loss of light was telling. I could run the LX100 at 400 ISO and it looked great, but the ZS100 was at ISO 800 and was really too dim. The smaller sensor and narrower aperture lens on the ZS100 definitely made for poorer shooting in low light.

    Bob, thanks for posting such an in-depth and an objective review, as I've been battling between these two cameras (and a couple of others before shortlisting), for a while and every now and again, when I think I've made my mind up, I go back to coin-tossing mode and end up getting nowhere, again.
    I think you hit the nail on the head relating to the two camera's levels of complexity, in so much that the LX100 is designed for the more knowledgeable and experienced photographer, whilst the ZS/TZ100 can be used as a point'n'shoot, which for the upcoming trip that we have planned, (three weeks in South-East Asia), means that my wife and kids can also pick it up, point and shoot, probably leaving it in auto mode the entire time. (Sometimes it's good to leave the DSLRs and the range of lenses at home for once).
    Again, thanks for posting, as I found your style to be very informative, unbiased and objective, but most helpful.
    OK, now let's see where I can get the best deal on a ZS/TZ100 in the UK? ;)

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good luck, Keith. Although I really like the ZS100/TZ100 and use it every day, I often miss the LZ100's MUCH wider angle when shooting video. (I'm mostly a video shooter, BTW.) I also agree that you can't always take the complex camera and lenses, and they often create an impression of the user that is best to avoid. The point-and-shoot capabilities of the ZS100 work in those instances. I use the ZS100 professionally, too -- I used it to take these photos of the FCC's chairman at a recent interview: www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/0002/chairman-pai-the-radio-world-interview/339403

  • @JoeSzilagy
    @JoeSzilagy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very nice review. I have the LX100, which I love, and wouldn't mind a ZS100 as well for the bigger zoom and compatibility. But I really wouldn't mind a flip screen for low shots or above the head. That would be a perfect little compact camera!

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the 370mm telephoto on the ZS100 shooting 4K video is really nice, and even the 250mm for photos is darn handy. But I was shooting video with the LZ100 this past weekend and it makes killer 4K video. It's really a hard decision between these two, depending on what sort of shooting you do. The manual focus on the LX100 is noticeably better (more linear operating) than the ZS100, too. Thanks for the nice comment!

    Exceptionally excellent review without all the self promotion of the channel like so many other people do. Both of these cameras are several hundred dollars less today and can still be purchased new. I lost my Canon G9x which I loved and is about the same price as LX100 of today but I will purchase the LS 100 for the incredible zoom and its only slightly larger. The Canon was actually shirt pocketable and around 3oz lighter. I almost used it exclusively while in Japan however i many times wished it had a longer zoom. The LS 100 probably would have been the perfect one camera to do everything. the perfect EDC. (every day carry). Again thank you for the Excellent review. Also If you dont mind, Do you still have the LS and would you still recommend it especially since the price is now under $400

      I do not have the LX100... it belonged to a friend and I returned it. I do still have the ZS100, and use it all the time. It stays on the dining room table so that we can grab it quickly if we see something interesting. That is literally almost every day.
      Both the LX100 and the ZS100 are steals for $400 each. I do more video than photography, and I could really like having the LX100. Oh well... maybe in another lifetime.

(I also have a Canon 6d mark ii) thanks in advance

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why not just use the Canon for photos? It will do a nice job. Of the two Panasonics, I would get the GX85, since it has swappable lenses, better low-light capability and is just a better camera. I still have my ZS100 (6 years old!) and it still works well. But I also have three Panasonic MicroFourThirds cameras similar to the GX85, and they are definitely better at both photos and video than the ZS100.

    Hi Bob. How about the Canon G7 Mark II compared to the Lumix LX100? Which one you think is better considering just photos and not videos?

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not actually used the Canon G7 Mark II, or any of Canon's large-sensor advanced point-and-shoot models. I have had Canon cameras in the past (and still have an older G7 around somewhere) and they take great photos. Where the Panasonic LX100 shines is video -- it takes excellent 4K video, and the Canon G7 Mark II is restricted to no more than HD video. I was not terribly impressed with photos from the LX100, so my gut feeling is that the G7 Mark II will take better photos. However, I have not had an opportunity to compare the two directly.

    Spot on sir! I'm looking for my next camera, and I will be recording inside the car quite often :) ergo ZS100 is not on my list anymore. Thanks! Audio quality is the only thing not as impressive as the video of LX100 camera.

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I knew some people would want to see the wide angle demonstrated, since it is a major difference between the two cameras. I've worked with both cameras more, and the LX100 is definitely better in low light. That will also help shooting in cars. The LX100 also has a nice electronic viewfinder, while the ZS100's is merely okay.

    What is the wide-angel of the ZS100 in full-HD?

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome. The ZS100 does very nice full HD, including at 120 frames per second. The quality of the HD video is particularly good at a sensitivity of 200 ISO and lower. For 1080p/60, the ZS100 has a wide-angle equivalent of 31mm. For 1080p/120, the ZS100 has a wide-angle equivalent of 32mm.

  • @rodolfonetto118
    @rodolfonetto118 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mr. Kovacs, excellent comparison. I liked the car and pocket tests! I have a ZS100 and I'm looking for a second unit for video (both will be used at the same time) and found both models, second hand, at around the same price. I was happy to learn about the battery - I already have a wasabi spare kit (with ext. charger). Currently the LX100 is at around 400US$ (just like the ZS100). I think I'll go for the LX100 because of wider field of view, low light and filter capability. Just a reminder: the 3 petal auto cap is sold in two version - one that support filters and the other that does not. I always install good protective filters on my cameras so I always get the taller auto cap.
    I have an LX7 that made me very happy for a long time and I believe the LX100 (thought not the Mark II) will make me very happy also. Another difference - an important one - is that the ZS100 has in body 5 axis stabilization while the LX100 has only optical stabilization. For a travel camera, the ZS100 is great - has a viewfinder, IBIS, great sensor for the price and the LensMate filter adapter kit has good reviews. I also don't like gluing things into my cam but I think it's worth if this will protect the lens.

    I would like to buy my first camera in my life. Although I'm more interested in making videos and puting them on the internet than taking photos. What should I buy? One of these two or there's something better for similar price???

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's your budget? What sort of videos do you want to make? Does your computer support 4K editing and playback?
      Both these cameras cost around $700, which is pretty steep for a smaller camera. Of course, you can pay MUCH more for better cameras with more flexibility, but these two are just about the highest quality you can get in a small size. If you want to make films and episodic video, you probably want a better camera than these. If you want something you can handhold and get great video, these two are terrific. My statement at the end of this video still works for me -- I'll take the slightly lower photo/video quality to get the smaller size and longer zoom of the ZS100. As far as I know, there is nothing better for a similar price, although you should look hard at the Panasonic GX85 and the Sony A6300... bigger sensors, more flexibility for not a lot more money.

      The LX100 has a larger sensor and larger aperture, even if the sensor and image quality has improved over time physics still dictate that the low light capabilities on the LX100 is still better. You can shoot up to 6400 ISO on the LX100 and it'll look decent still. It'll have grain but still watchable.

    • @BobKovacs

      I can tell you from experience -- shooting a band in a dim bar -- that the LX100 is considerably better than the ZS100 in low light. Shooting with the LX100 at 400 ISO is equivalent to the ZS100 at 800 ISO.

      What about when you walk around in the bar? Is the zs100 better at image stabilization? Thats the only thing that I am torn on. The macro capability is also another thing that I really want and the zs100 as you said has less of a soft edge without as much blue fringing but could it have been just due to a certain angle with a certain light reflection? or maybe a different aperture setting? It's weird since the lens on the lx100 is supposedly way better.

    Is the image stabilization on the zs100 better than the lx100 for video?

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. My experience is that their image stabilization quality is about the same at equivalent focal lengths. In other words, when the LX100 is zoomed in all the way for video, it has a focal length of about 80mm. When the ZS100 is zoomed into to an 80mm focal length, it's image stabilization for video is about the same as the LX100's at 80mm. However, the ZS100 can continue zooming until 370mm (for 4K video). You can see camera shake there that you could not see at 80mm.
      Still, I miss the LX100. (I gave it back to my friend, who owned it.) It was excellent for low-light 4K video.

  • @Yoko.Kurama
    @Yoko.Kurama 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In good lightning is there a big difference between image quality between these two? Is there any advantage to having a m43 sensor over a 1 inch sensor in good lightning other than bokeh?

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, the LX100 really does work better in *low* lighting than the ZS100, especially for 4K video. No contest there, really. The LX100's nice lens and bigger sensor are made for low light. In good light, it's harder to tell the difference between the two.

    I prefer a separate charger than in-camera charging. With a separate charger, you can continue to use the camera with one battery, while another is charging. I also like the ability of the LX-100 to shoot different formats without cropping. I've really enjoyed shooting 16 X 9 format with my camera. With most other cameras, a 16 X 9 format is achieved by cropping a 4 X 3 picture. The LX-100 achieves it by using different parts of the sensor for different formats. That is why the 16 MB sensor is reduced to 12 MB photos.

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, there's plenty of people who prefer one way or another. I actually have an external charger for the ZS100, as it came with the off-brand spare battery I bought for the camera. However, I find that 99 percent of the time, I charge the camera in the battery using an existing cell phone charger and cable that I have conveniently plugged in. This is helped by the camera's excellent battery life.

    • @allenmyers2870
      @allenmyers2870 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you mean that you charge the battery in the camera or are you creating a new device? My Olympus XZ-1 had in-camera charging. But I did as you did and bought an external charger. When I want to charge the batteries before taking a trip, I don't have to take out the camera until I am ready to go.

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is confusing. The ZS100's lens is 25-250mm for photographs, but 37-370mm for 4K video. It is 31-310mm for HD (1920 x 1080) video. The reason for this is complicated but it certainly can confuse people. The upshot is that the LX100 is MUCH better if you need a wide video shot, but the ZS100 is much better for telephoto video. Hope this helps!

  • @kaustubh8164

    Very effective comparison for a beginner like me!
    But my other big confusion is between the ZS100 and canon G7 X Mk2. I need your valuable advice.

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Canon G7 X Mk II is a nice camera that uses a 1-inch sensor that may be identical to the one in the Panasonic ZS100. They cost more-or-less the same. The big differences are that the ZS100 has a 10x lens and the G7 X has a 4.2x lens. So the Panasonic has a longer zoom, but the G7 X's lens is F1.8-2.8, while the ZS100's is f2.8-5.9. My take is that the Canon G7 X has a little better lens and probably takes marginally better photos than the ZS100, especially in lower light. But the ZS100 has a longer zoom, which is important for sightseeing and event photography. Finally, the Panasonic ZS100 can do 4K video (3,840 x 2,160 pixels), while the Canon G7 X Mk II is restricted to HD video at maximum resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels). In other words, the ZS100 shoots video with four times the resolution of the G7 X. Since video is important to me -- more important than photos, actually -- I favor the ZS100. But if photos is your top priority and you can live with the reduced zoom on the G7 X, then that may be a better choice for you.

    How would the ZS100 with the one inch sensor at full zoom (6.9) stack up against the Casio EX100 at full zoom, 300mm, which has a smaller 1/1.7" sensor but a constant 2.8 aperture in low light situations?

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not used the Casio EX100 or any other Casio camera. The 1/1.7-inch sensor is a decent size, but the 1-inch sensor in the Panasonic ZS100 is much bigger. In my experience, bigger sensors are much better at both image clarity and low-light capability. Photographically, the ZS100 has a maximum telephoto of 250mm and the minimum aperture at that point is f5.9. There's too many variables to wrap my head around, but I would always default to the larger sensor -- perhaps because I've been burned by claims of image quality from small-sensor cameras that just don't have what it takes. Also, I'm even more interested in video quality than photo quality, and the ZS100 does 4K video -- the Casio EX100 is limited to HD, as far as I can tell. I can personally say that the ZS100 will take well more than 1,000 photos on a single battery charge -- I've set the timelapse feature to take 1,400 photos in a single setting, no problem. Finally, the EX100 has a nice flip-up viewfinder screen, but the ZS100 has both a (fixed) 3.5-inch viewfinder and an electronic eyepiece viewfinder that's great for shooting in the sun. The Casio EX100 looks like it could be a nice camera, but all I can do is compare specs.

    • @MrNYCman530
      @MrNYCman530 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, thanks, my bad, I meant 5.9. I wanted something pocketable with a little length when I don't want to lug around my mirrorless or bridge camera. I love my canon G5X for indoor low light. So the ZS100 I would use mostly outdoors in daylight, but once in a while in low light.

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Canon G5X is nice... really good for photos. However, it's limited to HD video (it's good HD but still just HD), while the ZS100 does very good 4K video. One thing to consider is that each frame of 4K video is an 8-megapixel image. That doesn't sound like much, but it will print up as a 13-inch wide image at standard 300 dpi publishing resolution. (I've been a print photographer for many years.) Shoot a few seconds of 4K video and you have 30 8-megapixel images per second. But if you are only interested in photos and do not plan to much use video, then the Panasonic ZS100 is probably not the best camera for you. It has a great pop-up flash and takes good photos, but the lens can't deliver everything the sensor is capable of. I like the ZS100 as a photography camera, but I don't love it. It's best when I keep it wide and zoom with my feet by walking closer. That's not always possible, of course, but I try it whenever it is possible.

      Yes, the ZS100's viewfinder (and 3-inch screen) displays a zebra pattern to warn for over-brightness. It can be set for either 85 or 100 percent. I'd love to do that test. Unfortunately, I don't have a source to loan me the LX10. I'm impressed with the lens specs on the LX10, which would make it a good choice for a pocketable 4K production camera. It's hard to beat the longer zoom on the ZS100 for a travel camera, or for being in the stands and shooting a sports event. But the brighter lens in the LX10 would excel at low light and for getting wider video shots than the ZS100. (The widest you can go shooting 4K video with the ZS100 is 37mm, while the LX10 is apparently 24mm.)

      +RedFox Yes, I was also surprised at the 37mm focal length for wide-angle 4K video on the ZS100. What's funny is that the wide-angle focal length for 1080p is 31mm. I have a Canon HD camcorder with a wide-angle focal length of 43mm, so I'm used to difficult wide-angle shooting. I thought the car was a terrific way to demonstrate this particular difference between the LX100 and the ZS100. I'd love to do the FZ300, but I have repeatedly asked Panasonic for loaners and have been turned down. Even when I was the editor of a video trade magazine, I seldom got cooperation from Panasonic. From what I understand, the cameras crop the sensor where you get exact or near exact 3840x2160 resolution. So higher resolution sensors tend to crop bigger into the frame while the LX100's 12MP / 16MP sensor crops into a smaller frame because 8MP from 12MP is only a small bit of crop vs. 8MP from 20MP.

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many cameras crop to 3,840 x 2,160 pixels -- I think both the ZS100 and LX100 do -- but not all. I *think* that some cameras use the entire sensor width and interpolate a 4K/UHD image from that. I couldn't tell you which cameras those are, but I think I've read such things.

    • @TechInspected
      @TechInspected 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I believe the Lumix GH4 can do full sensor readout so it can go as wide as the lenses go. I think the Sony A6300 does that for a specific mode I believe 24FPS is full sensor readout - that one is closer to this range of cameras so I remember it in particular.

    Nice review for layman!! Could you do difference between G7 and LX100?

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Sadly, I do not have the G7, and I sent the LX100 back to my friend who owned it. Looking at the G7, it has swappable lenses, while the LX100 has a permanently attached lens. The G7 has a higher-resolution sensor, which probably means there is a "crop factor" for shooting video. The LX100 has a slight crop factor -- meaning that shooting video has a slightly narrower field of view than shooting stills -- but that crop factor is almost certainly bigger in the G7. Another way to say it is that the LX100s 24mm wide angle lens probably works out to the equivalent of 26mm for 4K video, while a 24mm equivalent lens on the G7 works out to a 32mm equivalent lens.
      Just a couple of thoughts.

      @@X3ABnew The ZS100 (or perhaps the TZ100 where you are) is a pretty good choice for a carry-around camera. It's been around since 2016, but I still use mine all the time and it holds up well. I actually used it this morning. US Amazon still has it in stock for $425.

    a believe LX100 is a LOT better in low light, not just "a little bit".

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the LX100 is much better than the ZS100 in low light. After I made this video, I shot a promo for local rock band. All the shooting was in relatively dim bars (although I set up a light or two) and the LX100 was the go-to camera for that shooting. It was the only thing I had that would go wide enough to get the whole band, and its video looked great.

      The Panasonic TZ100 (known in the U.S. as the ZS100) is a really good point-and-shoot camera. US$190 for the TZ100 is a fantastic price. I have owned mine for three years and still use it all the time. It is the camera I leave on the kitchen table for when I need a quick video or snapshot.

      They both seem about the same with autofocus. Manual focus is a little easier and more convenient with the LX100.

      Hi, excellent comparison, explanation. What can you say about moiree, artifacts, and does it have continous consistent focus on moving stuff or people? I will be filming rugby matches. My min. zoom is exactly the TZ100´s..10x optical.

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For rugby matches (or just about any sport), the 10X zoom on the ZS100 (TZ100) will work MUCH better than the LX100's much shorter lens. Physics says that the LX100 will be better with moiree and will have fewer artifacts, but the reality is that the ZS100 looks great. At ISO 200 or lower, it really makes gorgeous 4K video. If you're shooting stills, the ZS100 has more resolution. And it's an excellent pocketable stills camera.

      Bob Kovacs you´re great, thankyou. I started with a 10X Sony H2O, ...needs replacement now heheh. Do you like the Nikon DL 24-500? I thInk it´s also fixed lens which I like, though not so pocketable which is sort of ok cause we ladies have bags most of the time...but still, super nice to be able to sort of hide it like with this ZS100

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I'm not familiar with the Nikon DL24-500. You might think about the Panasonic FX1000, which has the same sensor as the ZS100/TZ100, but it has a nice 16x lens. The FZ1000 shoots 4K video, and it's lens is f2.8-4.0 -- that's better at the telephoto end than the ZS100's f2.8-5.9.
      Thanks for the nice comment!

  • @heliopijpe

    Did you get a chance to play with the ZS200? The ZS100 is probably more of a on the go consumer oriented camera much like the Sony's RX line, the LX100 has beautiful low light images and video, and I love the controls of the LX100, only 2 things mis I mis is the audio input and the touchscreen (why?? panasonic, why? just unbelievable they didn't include that :-p :-)) LX100 is more of a purist all in one street camera, relatively low profile, but so happy don't have to dial and redial in the menu's uurgh sony :-) ,, also the EVF is not very sharp, but at least it has ONE ... another good alternative within the same price range (with nice natural colors and imaging) would be the Ricoh GRII. An option I only discovered recently. Beautiful natural stills. And slimmer. And the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 (not pocketable :-p, but very usable range) and heavily discounted!

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the nice comments! I have not yet seen a Panasonic ZS200, but I still like using my ZS100. I thought the EVF on the LX100 was really nice... better than the EVF on the ZS100, although the ZS100's EVF is certainly usable.
      I just bought a Panasonic GH5 and a nice Panasonic 12-60mm lens, so I will be dabbling less in the point-and-shoot category (such as the ZS100 and its peers). However, the ZS100 is still my go-to camera for street and convention photography, where carrying a big camera just gets in the way. The GH5 will be my go-to video production camera -- I already posted one video I shot with it.

    • @BobKovacs
      @BobKovacs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just looked at the Ricoh GR II camera, and it is interesting. I like the APS-C sensor. However, it has a fixed lens with no zoom, and it's video resolution tops out at 1080p. I shoot more video than stills, and since I do most of my video shooting in 4K, the Ricoh GR II won't work for me. I might be interested in a fixed-lens APS-C camera if it did good 4K -- and preferably had a mic input.

      The Canon SX740 is an interesting choice. Just remember: It has a small sensor when compared to the two Panasonic cameras in this video. The sensor size ultimately limits image quality. However, if the SX740 works for you, go for it -- I always liked the photo quality of Canon cameras.

      I'm not crazy about the idea of sticking something onto the end of the lens assembly. And I often carry the ZS100 in a jacket pocket -- how durable is the Magfilter? Will it hold up being carried in a pocket day after day?

    • @superyamagucci
      @superyamagucci 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BobKovacs I wouldn’t carry it attached in a pocket, but it’s alloy and has a wee neoprene case. I carry it attached on a shoulder strap mostly. Only pocket it if it rains or I’m doing something active. You should try one out, it’s an unobtrusive metal ring that attaches to the camera, you won’t even notice it. Check the sizes - mounting rings are same size for a couple of different filter adapter sizes. Get the one next size up from 52mm to avoid big netting at widest angle. I never make vids, but I thought the Magfilter (or similar) is genuinely worth having, and going to some effort for you to try it too.
      Here's a Kiwi all-facts-no-bullshit video from a guy that just had to download iMovie, work out where REC. is on a couple of cameras, then just wing it.
      Clearly unscripted.
      Lost patience, but it's a 25-250 lens, even with the wrong adapter doesn't vignette below 27. Can't show you that on vid, f** knows how to put photos on vid.

(Obviously you want to protect your identity, too!) The reality is that, although my ZS100 was once my main camera, it is now my 3rd camera. It gets a little utility use, but is not the camera I reach for when I need the best photos and videos. Hard to spend money on it at this point.

      What does being "old" have to do with it? You either have a pocket big enough for the LX100 or you don't. I have a big jacket pocket that the LX100 will go into easily, but I seldom wear that jacket. For the clothes that I wear regularly, the LX100 is just not a good fit. And most people probably wear similar clothing.
